Sales and Project Manager Paul Monck says
“MTS Cleansing Services is in some ways like
a fourth emergency service. That’s because it
gets called out to handle situations such as
clearing blockages and dealing with liquids
that may become hazardous to human health
or the environment.”
Specialist FleetTo handle everything, there’s a very
specialised fleet of around 200 vehicles, with
70% of them operating out of the Rochester
head office and the rest spread over five
satellite depots across the south east.
For sewer cleaning, MTS Ltd has a number of
high specification jetting units for different
types of work. All have the capacity to carry
clean water for jetting plus liquid or semi-
solid waste at the same time. A moveable
centre plate allows the relative capacities to
be changed so that more clean water can be
carried at the start of a job and then more
waste as cleaning is carried out and waste is
being produced.
The fully equipped CCTV rigs are operated by
trained personnel to carry out CCTV drainage
surveys of pipe lines, culverts, shafts and so
on. This avoids the need for a confined space
entry in some places and the availability of
4x4 off road vehicles means even the most
remote locations can be accessed. All CCTV
equipment is robust and flexible while the
rigs have on-board, drainage industry specific
software to produce reports on site once
images have been recorded.
For tankering, MTS runs one of the biggest
privately owned vacuum tanker fleets in the
business, which has doubled in size over the
last two years. New vehicles include seven
4000 ADR specification tipping tankers with
jetting capabilities for forecourt, interceptor
and manhole cleaning. All vacuum tankers
can cope with any demand for all liquid,
liquid sludges, industrial, waste utilities and
domestic requirements.
Breathing ApparatusMTS has added to the fleet four
independently run umbilical cord breathing
apparatus units. These are suitable for
confined space entry work and are run by
trained operatives who are also proficient in
first aid and full rescue procedures.
With a specialist fleet this big, MTS needs a
tyre partner who can handle any situation,
anywhere – on or off road. That partner is
Commercial Tyres. Paul says “We have
partnered with Commercial Tyres for many
years now. That relationship has endured
because MTS and Commercial Tyres share
the same ethic – to be reactive to our
customers and to go the extra mile. In all of
those years Commercial Tyres have never let
us down.”
ON AND OFF ROAD WITH MTS CLEANSINGWith many years of experience of the liquid waste industry, MTS Cleansinghave built an enviable reputation for their expertise, the skill and knowledgeof their team, and their high specification equipment.

X MultiWay 3DLast September Michelin launched its new
X MultiWay 3D truck and coach steer tyre,
aimed at regional and national operators
where vehicles use a mix of local and major
trunk roads. From January 2013 the matching
drive tyre joined the range – and like it’s steer
tyre sibling, its manufactured here in the UK
in the 295/80 R 22.5 size favoured by
domestic operators.
Speaking to Burnin’ Rubber, Michelin’s Marc
Speed explains: “Our extensive testing has
shown an increase in total mileage
performance of up to 15 per cent for the new
steer tyre, and up to 10 per cent for the
equivalent drive axle fitment, when compared
with the previous XZE2+ and XDE2+ tyres.
There is also a significant reduction in rolling
resistance for both tyres, which translates into
even lower operating costs for Michelin users.”
X Line EnergyIn another all-new product line-up for the UK,
Michelin is launching its long-haul X Line
Energy range for fleets where the majority of
journeys are at a high average speed on
major trunk roads.
Marc says that the key to the new tyre’s
fuel-efficiency is a new rubber compound
that allows Michelin to reduce the tread
depth without compromising durability. This
results in a very low rolling resistance, whilst
further design changes help to reduce heat
build-up in the rubber.
Fleet Support in 2013As a Michelin Certified Centre, Tructyre
Group holds the seal of approval from one of
the best known brands in the world, in
recognition of the company’s focus on
quality and outstanding customer service.
Maintaining this prestigious European
accolade enables Tructyre Group to be a
member of the Michelin Truck Professional
network, which comprises a nationwide
group of independent tyre specialists noted
for being amongst the best in their field.

For Michelin, who workclosely withthe TructyreGroup tosupport truck, bus and coachfleets, 2013 is shaping up to beone of the most important yearsfor a decade with the launch oftwo of the most eagerlyanticipated new tyre ranges.
NEW MICHELINSROLL INTO 2013
Commercial Tyres Off Highway recently
entered the Heavy Industrial / Earthmover
market with the purchase of a 26 ton (6x4)
Renault truck complete with a sleeper cab, 38
ton crane, tyre handler and London emissions
compliance. This addition to the fleet has over
£10,000 worth of heavy tools, and the latest in
tyre fitting equipment. The new UHL tyre
handler, alone cost over £18,000! The vehicle
is capable of handling 85% of all the
Earthmover tyres in the UK market.
Paul Kuske, Managing Director of
Commercial Tyres says “We were receiving
an increasing number of requests to carry
out industrial and earthmover work. At first
we tried contracting this type of work to
outside companies, but we experienced
non-attendances due to tachograph hours
and refusals to attend at weekends, or
simply they were not equipped to carry out
the work successfully. This is not the sort of
service we expect for our customers.”
“At that point, we decided there was no
alternative other than to do the job properly
and invest in the right equipment.”
Do it RightThe investment has paid off – it seems clear
that Commercial Tyres Off Highway were not
the only people unhappy with the services
offered by others in this market. Demand for
the service has lead to the addition of a
second 15 ton MAN vehicle to the fleet.
NO TYRETOO BIG FOR USEarthmover truck added to Commercial Tyres Off Highway fleet.
STOP PRESS To meet increasing demand, a third brand new high specification vehicle has been ordered. Built upon a DAF 75 series chassis complete with crane, full tyre handling facilities and sleeper cab.

Because the sensors are secured to the
wheel rim they stay in place even if the tyre is
changed. Sensors are only replaced every 5
years and because they are inside the tyre
there is no possibility of theft. A unique
feature of this system is that the data from
each tyre is not only shown to the driver in
real time, but is also stored for later analysis.
By analysing the data, tyre pressures can be
specified more accurately for a vehicle’s
particular route and workload - thus reducing
fuel costs whilst maximising tyre life.
The TPMS package is now running on
vehicles of two Tructyre customers;
Birmingham-based Vehicle Transporter; STVA
and Fareham-based National Express Coach
Operator; Lucketts Travel.
In the first three months the system saved
STVA four potential roadside blowouts.
Interestingly, data analysis from one vehicle
has shown that tyre pressures rise from
120 psi to as high as 150psi. Analysis of
pressure and temperature differences from
tyres across the same axle have helped to
highlight structural issues from the tyres,
wheels or even the vehicle itself. Picking up
these issues early on has minimised the
negative effect they can have on tyre life.
For customers seeking to minimise roadside
incidents, reduce fuel costs and maximise
tyre life this system is definitely worth their
attention. It offers a modern, proven solution
which combines precision technology with
user friendly practicality.
TPMS FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES AND TRAILERS
Potential Blowouts PreventedIn the first three months the system saved
STVA four potential roadside blowouts.
Two of these
relate to slow
punctures to
which the system
alerted the driver
at the start of the
day. One was a nail picked up at Southampton
docks. The other was a bolt picked up by the
steer tyre and then “shot” into the drop axle
tyre. As a result of these alerts the punctures
were repaired efficiently and economically on
site, rather than at the roadside.
The third was a system alert for a rapid
deflation whilst on the motorway following a
curb being clipped earlier in the day.
Because of the alert the driver was able to
pull into a Service Station and then call
Tructyre for assistance.
The fourth money saving warning was a high
temperature alert on the inner of a twin on the
drive axle. This enabled the driver to inform his
operations department and the tyre was
subsequently checked during Inspection and
found to have multiple blisters.
For the last few months Tructyre has been working in partnership with RL Automotive on a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) for commercialvehicles. The Tructyre/RL Automotive TPMS package consists of sensorsinserted inside each wheel rim and a display screen in the cab.

The panintelligence system was introduced
after Tructyre upgraded its UniSerV™
platform from CAM Systems, and the
intelligent dashboard was integrated to show
real-time management information.
CAM fitted the console to a large TV screen,
which communicates key activities at a
glance such as inbound calls, the operators
answering and processing them, jobs in
progress, mileage reports, costs versus
sales, turnover and profitability. Relevant data
is transmitted to the whole organisation
every few minutes to ensure actions are dealt
with in a timely and proactive way.
Anne Sherwood, Business Support Manager
at Tructyre, is pleased with the additional
functionality of panintelligence: “There’s so
much more information at your finger tips
rather than piles of data that you have to
wade through to learn anything useful. I can
schedule emails containing relevant data to
go out when I want them to, which frees up
more of my time. The live data feed has also
created healthy internal competition, as the
operators can see the status of inbound calls
and measure themselves against each other.”
TRUCTYRE INTRODUCES CAM SYSTEMS’ CV TYRE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMUsing the new system the trucktyre service specialist introduceda dynamic, live data feed alignedto the organisation’s KPIs into itshead office, improvingfunctionality and visibility whilesaving administration time.

The new R-STEER 001 and R-DRIVE 001 tyres
have been developed in response to the
trend towards changing fleet operating
conditions from one day to another and a
broader mix of usage conditions in regional
applications, ranging from highway driving to
light on- and off-road usage.
This “regional” segment, which represents
around 42% of the total truck tyre market,
also covers various types of vehicles –
general cargo trucks, tankers, refrigerated
trucks, coaches, and specialised areas such
as timber and waste transport – adding
further to the versatility of conditions.
To meet this market situation, Bridgestone
has designed the R-STEER 001 and R-DRIVE
001 truck tyres with more robustness for
versatile conditions and broader usage,
without loss of performance or
safety. They are also more able
to cope with low inflation
pressure and overloading
– identified in a
Bridgestone survey as
common behaviour in
today’s mixed
operating conditions.
Longer Service Life and Improved Retreading PotentialSpecifically, R-STEER 001 and R-DRIVE 001
truck tyres are designed for trips of between
50 and 1,000 km, with up to 5% on/off
usage, for customers looking to improve their
mileage and cost per kilometer.
Performance features include a long life with
balanced rolling resistance coefficient,
excellent traction for R-DRIVE 001, highly
durable casings for maximum retreading
potential, and improved re-grooving potential
versus the predecessors R297 and M729.
Exclusive Compound TechnologyTo achieve these performance levels,
Bridgestone engineers have employed the
company’s proprietary NanoPro-Tech™
compound, which reduces energy loss in the
top compound as the tyre rotates. Reduced
energy loss leads to reduced rolling
resistance, which guarantees durability and
abrasion resistance, without compromising
tyre performance.
The advanced tread patterns are designed
with Bridgestone’s top tread technologies:
Tie-bar between the tread blocks on the
unidirectional R-DRIVE 001 for increased
stiffness and service life; Square Shoulder
design on R-STEER 001 for stable cornering
and increased tyre life, together with Stone
Ejectors for improved retreading potential
and Dual Sipe technology for improved wet
and winter handling.
“These new R-STEER 001 and R-DRIVE 001
truck tyres retain the performance strengths
of their Bridgestone predecessors but give
fleets more durability and wear life in versatile
conditions, for a lower cost per kilometer than
their predecessors” says Harald Van
Ooteghem, Senior Manager, Marketing
Planning, Commercial Business Unit,
Bridgestone Europe.
Extensive field tests in 18 EU countries,
ranging from severe on- and off-road usage
to 100% highway, have demonstrated the
excellent durability and improved retreading
and regrooving potential of R-STEER 001 and
R-DRIVE 001, while maintaining the
performance level expected of premium
Bridgestone truck tyres.
Bridgestone R-STEER 001 and R-DRIVE 001
truck tyres are being introduced
progressively across Europe, initially in the
major size for regional applications:
315/80R22.5. Other sizes will be added in
the future.
Bridgestone is progressively replacing its top-selling R297 steer and M729drive tyres with newly-developed R-STEER 001 and R-DRIVE 001 truck tyresfor regional application in Europe. The new tyres are designed for robustnessin versatile usage, providing high-level performance and a long lifecycle.

Anne Sherwood, Business Support Manager at Tructyre explains, “We
are looking forward to transitioning our business from ‘doing paperwork’
within the business to ‘auditing paperwork’ within the business by driving
technician best practice off of the e-Tablet. The e-Tablet solution will
replace the e-pen application Tructyre have previously been using to
provide us with near real-time transactional data from the field.”
Mike Allen, Managing Director of CAM Systems says, “The e-Tablet
application for technicians is the next stage in our Straight Through
Processing concept, allowing mobile technicians to carry out commercial
transactions easily on the road and keep head office completely
up-to-date with their operations.”
Tructyre Fleet Management is continuing the rollout of the new CAM Systems e-Tablet to 80 plus mobiletechnicians. The application enables the tracking of commercial transactions effectively from initial capture
to invoicing and creates a seamless, streamlined process that saves considerable time and money.

Low rolling resistance equals bigsavings for long haul fleets.
Saving over £170,000 a year in fuel costs may
be a dream for some long haul truck fleets,
but this is what a typical 50-truck operator
could expect to achieve thanks to Goodyear
Marathon tyres1.
When the ‘Dream Team’ of Goodyear LHS II +
steer tyres, LHD II + drive tyres and LHT II
trailer tyres are fitted in place of tyres graded D
in fuel efficiency, a fleet of 50 trucks would not
only benefit from savings in excess of
£170,000 in fuel costs, representing nearly
145,000 litres less diesel used, but there would
also be a reduction in carbon dioxide
emissions of 380 tonnes – having a very
significant positive impact on the environment.
A typical five-axle 40 tonne articulated truck
on long haul operations, would save £3,763 a
year if covering 100,000 kilometres with a
fuel consumption of 32.26 l/100km and a fuel
cost of £1.30 per litre2. This relates to 2,896
litres of fuel saved and a reduction in harmful
CO2 emissions of 7,616 kilograms.
“In these cost-conscious times it is very easy
to just go for the cheapest option, but that can
also be the most expensive,” comments
Adam Stanton, Commercial Marketing
Manager, Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK. “Thanks
to the quality of the materials used, as well as
the designs and technology employed,
Goodyear Marathon tyres not only offer a fuel
efficient solution but also provide high
mileage and the ability to be regrooved and
retreaded, further prolonging their tyre life. For
these reasons, we believe that our tyres offer
genuine savings to both operators and the
environment in terms of financial savings,
reduced fuel use and decreased emissions.”
There are also important benefits in terms of
the superior wet braking performance, which
means significantly shorter stopping
distances on wet roads.
The Goodyear Marathon range offers a wide
choice of sizes covering popular applications.
20% are graded B in fuel efficiency and B or
above in wet grip (EU tyre label grades). 95%
achieve C in fuel efficiency and C or above in
wet grip, further demonstrating the superb
performance levels of Marathon tyres.
Operators can calculate the savings they can
expect to achieve using the free Goodyear
fleet calculator, at www.fleet-calculator.eu.
1. The calculations are based on a typical 40 tonne4x2 tractor unit and tri-axle trailer combination, anannual mileage of 100,000 kms, a fuelconsumption of 32.3 l/100km and a diesel priceof £1.30 per litre.
2. Goodyear Marathon LHS II+ and LHD II+ in size315/70R22.5; LHT II in size 385/55R22.5, whichhave EU label grades relating to fuel efficiency ofrespectively B, C and A, have been compared tosame sizes with tyres graded D in fuel efficiency.
GOODYEAR’S ‘DREAM TEAM’ CAN SAVE FLEETSOVER £170,000 ANNUALLY
Internet tyre management reportstalk in pounds and help cut costs.
Goodyear has launched its FleetOnline -
Solutions Mobile Technical Evaluation (FOS
Mte) for Off-The-Road tyre customers.
The Internet tyre management programme
allows fleet inspection reports to be filed
online at the time of visit, quickly giving the
customer information on the performance of
each tyre in the fleet. It also provides relevant
information in actual cost terms.
FOS is a significant step forward in the OTR
business for operators of earthmoving
equipment and other heavy plant and
equipment. It enables each OTR representative
to deliver a fleet inspection report direct from a
customer’s site via an internet connection.
These reports give full details to the customer,
by tyre position and include:
• Projection of performance
• Measured pressures vs recommendation
• Cost per hour
• Hours realised per millimeter of rubber
• Value at risk - For each tyre of a specific
inspected vehicle, the deviation of
pressure versus the recommendation is
converted into currency, showing how
much a wrongly inflated tyre will cost to
the end-user if it continues to run at the
wrong pressure until the end of its life.
“Customers do not talk in bars or PSI; they
talk in currency. For this reason, we decided
to convert the variance between the
measured pressure and the recommendation
into a reliable ‘value at risk’. This talks much
more to our end-users. This system also gives
the value of the fleet visit performed by our
experts, a service that not all premium brands
are providing today” said Stephan Renson,
After Sales and Marketing Manager Off-The-
Road Tyres Goodyear EMEA.

2012, and has stated their €1.5m
investment will ensure accurate
figures are easily available to both

Regulation 1222/2009 is intended
to provide easy-to-understand
buying information on tyres in three
areas – rolling resistance, wet grip and

testing across all product portfolios
making the information available to
consumers on its website as well as
issuing a detailed, technical guide for
