FTR reported orders of 35,300 units, exceeding expectations at 27% higher than July and up 141% year-over-year. Fleets are placing 2019 orders a few months ahead of schedule, FTR reports, with large fleets ordering substantial numbers of dry and refrigerated van trailers to reserve production slots for net year. Parts and component availability remain tight.“Orders should remain sturdy for the rest of the year, with continued steady freight growth and tight industry capacity,” said Don Ake, FTR vice-president of commercial vehicles. “There is strong demand for new trailers, and we expect this to continue well into 2019. Class 8 orders hit record ... againClass 8 truck orders continue to break records in 2018, with August numbers hitting an all-time high of 52,400 units – 300 more than the previous month, FTR reports. Across North America, Class 8 orders over the past 12 months have now totaled 477,000 units.“It appears the supplier shortage issues that significantly slowed production earlier this year have been largely abated for now,” says Don Ake, FTR’s vice-presi- dent of commercial vehicles. “However, the supply chain remains tight, and fleets and dealers continue to place large orders to lock down build slots in 2019.”In terms of Class 8 sales this July, Freightliner held 29.2% of the Canadian market with 886 units. International led the way in Class 7 with 29.9% of July sales, representing 174 trucks. Freightliner accounted for 36.3% of the month’s Class 6 market, at 37 units. And Ford continued to dominate monthly Class 5 numbers with 310 sales, representing 55.8% of the market.
