Working on television and radio, Terry recently commentated at the 2012 london olympic Games.
every Friday The Races TV is featured on Thoroughbred Racing sa’s website (www.theracessa.com.au) and on The Races YouTube channel and subscribers can also sign up to receive the episodes direct to their inbox by subscribing for the weekly email. They’re also accessible via Facebook and Twitter.

TRQ: hi luke. Thanks for chatting to TRQ. can you tell us a bit about ivy league and how it all started?
Luke: i’ve always had an interest in fashion. about 10 years ago i spent a year as a student in the us and i was exposed to traditional ivy league dressing. it was a whole new style and range of brands – such as abercrombie & Fitch, Gant and more – and i absolutely loved it.
With my interest in fashion i started up a suit business, The suit co, in the cBD but i soon saw an opportunity to bring international brands
like scotch & soda to adelaide and it was a natural progression to open ivy league. Then about two years after opening my first ivy
league store at Norwood, i decided it made sense to combine the two offerings so i closed The suit co and opened a second ivy league
shop – incorporating both suits and casual wear – in the cBD.
With a range of local and international brands, we pride ourselves on our high quality menswear which is largely inspired by the traditional
fashion of the ivy league universities of North eastern america.
We also believe in old fashioned, one on one customer interaction – building personal relationships with our customers by providing
honest advice and unparalleled service. The way it should be!
Dressing for the races can be an intimidating affair, especially for the uninitiated. But with the Balaklava cup -
one of the state’s biggest racing soirees - fast approaching, now’s the time to get up-to-date with all the looks of the season.
in this edition of TRQ we speak to Luke Schapel, owner of men’s fashion store ivy league, to get his tips on how to come out
a winner in the style stakes at your next day at the races.

TRQ: so what kind of trends are you seeing coming in for next season (spring)?
Luke: i’m already doing my fabric buying for spring and i’m seeing a lot of traditional fabrics and textures. Patterns
like herringbone, houndstooth and Prince of Wales will feature. i’m also seeing lots of three piece suits – you can
expect to see waist coats and lots of trimmings such as bow-ties, pocket squares and more. There will be plenty of earthy
colours and of course slim-fit suits will still be popular.
TRQ: so when you’re not at ivy league, what else are you involved in? We’ve heard you enjoy a day at the races?
Luke: i’m involved in a couple of syndicates and my mates and i certainly enjoy a bit of a punt. i first got involved in the races
about 10 years ago when some friends initiated local youth-based racing events and since then i’ve been a regular at the oakbank
and clare races as well as some of the metropolitan events.
The clare easter Races would have to be a personal favourite. it’s an authentic experience and you can always get a spot close to the track – plus, every year we seem to get fantastic weather.
TRQ: and what style tips would you give men heading for a day trackside?
Luke: Different racetracks often have different rules and dress codes – some dressier, others more casual – so it’s best to check
before you attend. My number one piece of advice to men heading to the races is simply; make an effort. Women generally take a lot of pride in what they look like and i would encourage men to do some
research and take some time to think about what they’re going to wear.
Wear a suit (with a jacket) and a tie or bow-tie. Wear a nice pair of shoes and make sure they are shined. and keep in mind that racing season is supposed to be fun, so don’t be afraid to add some accessories and show a little of your own personality.

n February Lauren Stojakovic’s dreams came to life when she
won the $1 million Blue Diamond at Caulfield aboard Miracles of Life and ahead of some of the biggest names in racing.
The victory meant stojakovic now joins clare lindop and Michelle Payne as the only current Group 1 winning female jockeys in australia.
it was a fairytale for the injury-ravaged apprentice, whose career seemed over seven years ago after a series of falls. you can re-live the emotional win by clicking the link to the video on page 15.
ThRee ThiNgs you didN’T KNoW abouT Lauren Stojakovic1. she first dreamt of being a jockey
when she was five years old. her mum’s only explanation for her obsession with horses came from the fact that mum was working as a TaB operator while she was pregnant, because no one else in the family had any interest in horses.
2. Miracles of life was given the nickname Barbie because she’s got a beautiful long blonde mane and tail which she won’t let
anyone cut, and she’s also a real girl around the stable.
3. she started riding professionally at the age of 17 and has had a series of lengthy injuries including a broken leg, surgery on both knees and a badly smashed pelvis which collectively took her out of the game for many years. During this time she worked as a vet nurse and part-time steward for Thoroughbred Racing sa - something which allowed her to fully recover physically, mentally and emotionally.

rish Race Day is fast approaching so it’s time to celebrate the Irish and
australian love for a day at the races. But what is it that the Irish love more than the race? their homeland.
as patriotism is rife in the lead up to the event, we asked Melanie Wynne from Phil hoffman travel to give us a taste of what makes the emerald isle such a remarkable place to visit.
ireland is a leprechaun-sized country with a gargantuan-sized reputation. across the globe, the emerald isle is famous for its timeless evergreen
landscapes dotted with churches and black sheep, lyrical pubs heaving with hospitality, a stone that can be kissed and will offer one the gift of the gab, a drink called Guinness that is good for you, a Book of Kells, the Temple Bar and cities that celebrate oysters, music and beautiful crystal. in short, ireland is as the irish say ‘a thoroughly good craic’. ireland is the stuff of postcards. along the peninsulas of the southwest, the brooding loneliness of connemara, the spectacular cliffs of Moher on the clare coast and the mysticism and all-round beauty of the wild Dingle Peninsular will fill the photo
albums of anyone entranced by natural beauty. ireland possesses it in buckets. This is one extraordinarily attractive country.
yet, tread carefully, for you tread on history. up and down this fair land, ireland’s history presents itself, from the amazing ruins of ireland’s rich monastic past at clonmacnoise in county offaly and Glendalough in county Wicklow to more recent history in the shape of the famine museum at cobh in county cork to the interactive displays of Vinegar hill in county Wexford.

and, if you want to attend theatrical gigs, impromptu musical recitals or festivals, from Galway to limerick, Doolin to Dublin, ireland is awash with all manner of festivals celebrating everything from flowers in full bloom, to music and literature.
Racing in ireland is also unique. With 26 race courses located around the country and almost 350 days of racing each year, there are endless opportunities to join in one of ireland’s most popular pastimes. Why not check out the irish National hunt Festival at Punchestown or the excitement of a thrilling finish at ireland’s most important race track, the curragh.
if you’d prefer to stay closer to home, join us at irish Race Day at Morphettville.
The irish are renowned for their welcome. ‘cead mile failte’ or in english ‘a hundred thousand welcomes’ is about where it’s at in ireland. There’s no denying despite the clichés, that the irish are some of the most welcoming folk on the planet, unabashedly altruistic.
Don’t take our word for it. sample some of the ‘craic’ for yourself. and when someone utters ‘cead mile failte’, you’ll know you’re welcome in ireland.
