ThiscoursewillexplorethroughclassroomlecturesandseminardiscussionstheliturgicalunderstandingofhumanexistencefromthecentralliturgicalritesoftheOrthodoxChurchcoveringeveryaspectoflife:birth,marriage,ordination,confession,healingfromsickness,anddeath.Thecoursewillthusprovideanoverviewofthehistory,theologyandcurrentpracticeoftheholymysteries(sacraments),withaviewtounderstandingthesacramentalityoftheworldandthecentralityofliturgyandsacramentsincontemporaryChristianlifeandministry.
Studentswillbeevaluatedontheirclassparticipation,areflectionpaperonaliturgicalvisit,aresearchpaperandfinalexam.

ExpandedCourseDescription
ThiscoursewillexplorethroughclassroomlecturesandseminardiscussionstheliturgicalunderstandingofhumanexistencefromthecentralliturgicalritesoftheOrthodoxChurchcoveringeveryaspectoflife:birth,marriage,ordination,confession,healingfromsickness,anddeath.Thecoursewillthusprovideanoverviewofthehistory,theologyandcurrentpracticeoftheholymysteries(sacraments),withaviewtounderstandingthesacramentalityoftheworldandthecentralityofliturgyandsacramentsincontemporaryChristianlifeandministry.
Themainfocusonthiscoursewillbeonthe‘Byzantine’riteoftheEasternOrthodoxChurches,butconsiderationwillalsobegiventothesacramentalritesoftheOrientalOrthodoxChurches,specificallytheCoptic,Ethiopian,ArmenianandSyriactraditions.
Studentswillgainsolidfamiliaritywiththeactualritesandtexts,andlearntoreflecttheologicallyuponthesemysteriesaswellastheTrinitarianfoundationofallsacramentallife,guidedbyreadingsofPatristictextsandarticlesandcommentaryfrommodernOrthodoxtheologians.Studentswillbeexpectedtoapplythetheologicalworldviewandmeaningoftheseritestocontemporarylifeandpastoralcircumstances.Theevolutionthroughtimeandmodernissuesofliturgicalpracticewillalsobestudied,alongwiththepossibilityofrenewalandreform‘forthelifeoftheworld’today.
Thecoursewillincludeatleastonevisittoparticipateintheliturgicalcelebrationofoneoftheholymysteries.AclasstripwillbeorganisedinToronto,thoughonlinestudentsmayorganisetheirownvisitsintheirlocalarea.
Studentswillbeevaluatedontheirclassparticipation,areflectionpaperonaliturgicalvisit,aresearchpaperandfinaloralexam.
Therearenorequiredprerequisitesforthiscourse,thoughwewillbebuildingonliturgicaltheologyconceptsdiscussedintheotherliturgycourses,particularlyTRP2123–OrthodoxEucharisticLiturgies.StudentsshouldhaveagoodgroundinginbothOldandNewTestament.Studentswithoutsuchabackgroundshouldspeaktotheinstructorwhowillprovidesomeremedialreadingpriortobeginningthecourse.

Requirements–ClassroomSection
Thefinalgradeforthecoursewillbebasedonthefollowingareas:
• Classparticipation(10%):mostsessionswillincludeaperiodofdiscussionofprimaryorsecondarysourcesandliturgicaltexts.Allstudentsareexpectedtoreadalltextsthoroughly.Studentswillbeassignedagradebasedupontheirpreparednessforandparticipationinthesesessions.
• Liturgicalreflection(10%):studentswillwritea400-500wordreflectiveessayfollowingaclass(orindividual)visittoaliturgicalserviceofoneoftheholymysteries.
• Researchpaper(50%):studentswillwritea2,000-2,500wordresearchpaperorcriticalbookreviewonatopicoftheirchoicetobeagreedwiththeinstructor,andalsopresentabriefsummaryoftheirpapertotheclassduringthefinalclasssession.Theassignmentwillbegradedasfollows:10%forsubmissionoftopic,thesisstatementanddraftoutline,20%forroughdraft,50%forthefinalessay,10%forproperformatincludingbibliography,and10%fortheoralpresentation.

GradingSystem
PolicyonLateAssignments
Theinstructorreservestherighttodeductupto2.5%ofthefinalassignmentgradeforeachweekthatanassignmentislate.Studentsaregenerallygranteda‘graceweek’providedtheinstructorisinformedofanyspecialcircumstancesbeforetheassignmentdeadline.
Thispenaltyisnotappliedtostudentswithmedicalorcompassionatedifficulties;studentsfacingsuchdifficultiesarekindlyrequestedtoconsultwiththeirfacultyadvisororbasicdegreedirector,whoshouldmakearecommendationonthemattertotheinstructor.Theabsolutedeadlineforthecourseistheexaminationdayscheduledforthecourse.Studentswhoforexceptionalreasons(forinstance,adeathinthefamilyoraseriousillness)areunabletocompleteworkbythisdatemayrequestanextension(SDF=‘standingdeferred’)beyondtheterm.AnSDFmustberequestedfromtheregistrar’sofficeinthestudent’scollegeofregistrationnolaterthanthelastdayofclassesinwhichthecourseistaken.TheSDF,whenapproved,willhaveamutuallyagreedupondeadlinethatdoesnotextendbeyondtheconclusionofthefollowingterm.IfastudenthasnotcompletedworkbuthasnotbeengrantedanSDF,afinalmarkwillbesubmittedcalculatingazeroforworknotsubmitted.
