The physicians and staff of the Center for Digestive Health specialize in gastroenterology, which covers all aspects of the digestive system. Our specialty includes diagnostic endoscopic procedures and ultrasounds, liver disease studies, reflux diagnosis and management, and motility studies.

We are dedicated to conducting the highest quality of clinical research, while offering to our patients an option to participate in some of the nation’s leading and innovative gastrointestinal research studies.

Both Surgical Centers of Michigan and Macomb Endoscopy Center has achieved accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Accreditation distinguishes these Centers from many other outpatient facilities by providing the highest quality of care to its patients as determined by an independent, external process of evaluation.

Status as an accredited organization means Surgical Centers of Michigan and Macomb Endoscopy have both met nationally recognized standards for the provision of quality health care set by AAAHC. More than 5,000 ambulatory health care organizations across the United States are accredited by AAAHC. Not all ambulatory health care organizations seek accreditation; not all that undergo the rigorous on-site survey process are granted accreditation.

“We believe our patients deserve the best,” stated Angela Johnson Chief Operating Officer of Surgical Centers of Michigan and Macomb Endoscopy “When you see our certificate of accreditation, you will know that AAAHC, an independent, not-for-profit organization, has closely examined our facility and procedures. It means we as an organization care enough about our patients to strive for the highest level of care possible.”

Ambulatory health care organizations seeking accreditation by AAAHC undergo an extensive self-assessment and on-site survey by AAAHC expert surveyors – physicians, nurses, and administrators who are actively involved in ambulatory health care. The survey is consultative and educational, presenting best practices to help an organization improve its care and services.

COLORECTAL CANCER ALLIANCE PILLARS

Prevention: Screening is the number one way you can reduce your risk for this unique cancer. While screening is the most important step you can take – it’s not the only one. You can take charge of your health by knowing your family history and possible risk factors, eating a balanced diet, exercising, limiting alcohol use and not smoking. Together, this is a cancer we can do something about.

Research: Our research agenda includes the following: advancing biomarker research, understanding why those under 50 are increasingly diagnosed with colon cancer, decreasing late-state diagnosis of high-risk populations, closing the referral gap for screening and diagnostic testing. We view patients, researchers, medical institutions and industry as pivotal allies for pursuing this mission.

Patient Support: You’re not alone – our patient empowerment team is here to provide hope and support to you and your family, while connecting you to the latest information, expert resources and cutting-edge tools that you need to get through a cancer diagnosis.

GLENDA LEWISAlthough Glenda Lewis grew up with a broadcasting legend for a mother, it was not her lifelong dream to pursue a career in broadcasting.

When asked why she chose broadcasting after receiving her B.A. in Advertising and Marketing at Michigan State University, Glenda told the story of her first job

interview. She took a personality profile while interviewing, and realized that all her best attributes related to her being a reporter.

“It was like a light-bulb went off,” Glenda explained. “I realized I wanted to be in news, so I turned down the sales position I had interviewed for.” Glenda did post-graduate work at Specs Howard School of Broadcasting to prepare for her newly chosen career path.

Glenda Lewis joined the WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 news team on September 1, 2003, as a general assignment reporter and the co-anchor of Action News Sunday at 6 and 11pm. She is currently co-anchor of The NOW at 4pm on Ch. 7 and 7 Action News at 10pm on TV20 Detroit.

Before working her way to her hometown, Glenda began her career as a reporter/photographer at WBKB-TV in Alpena. She then moved on to WLNS-TV in Lansing as a reporter/anchor. Next, she spent five years at WJRT-TV in Flint as a co-anchor of ABC 12 News at 6 and 11pm before joining Channel 7.

Glenda received multiple Emmy nominations in 2005 and 2006 and was the recipient of Emmys for Breaking News and Best Weekend Newscast. Glenda was also honored with Michigan Association of Broadcasters Awards for Breaking News and Best Newscast in 2006.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERSHEALTH HERO

& COLON CANCER SURVIVOR

DOREEN DEFAUW

My journey began with extreme exhaustion. It was a feeling like never before, loss of breath when I’d climb a flight of stairs coupled with frightening dizzy spells to the point I felt like I was going to pass out. I figured it was time to see my primary care physician. I ended up in the hospital with a blood count of 5.2, and the doctors at that time were

not sure why. I received two blood transfusions and had an endoscopy, the results of which came back normal. The doctors needed to figure out where I was internally bleeding from, so of course the next step, a colonoscopy. Historically, I had experienced bathroom issues on and off, but nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. Constipation for a day or two then diarrhea, sometimes cramping, and I always blamed it on what I ate.

The doctors agreed to release me from the hospital over Mother’s Day weekend so long as I promised I would come back on Monday for the ever dreaded colonoscopy. The idea of having to prepare for a colonoscopy and the procedure itself always grossed me out, not to mention the fear of the unknown. Now I could no longer run from having a colonoscopy, I had to find a way to overcome my fear! Because I was at home when I prepared for my colonoscopy, I created a lemonlime Gatorade slushee colon cleaner drink, grabbed a good book , puppy pads for my bed and waited for the magic to happen. And, I really tried to understand why anyone would want to go into this field of medicine – yuck!

After waking up from the painless colonoscopy procedure, my doctor told me the words no one ever wants to hear… “I know what I saw, and what I saw was a bleeding tumor, more likely cancer.” The shock and fear that swept over me at that moment was indescribable – how was I going to tell my son Andrew who was sitting in the waiting room? How was I going to tell my daughter Robin?

Page 17: TROY GASTROENTEROLOGY PC½x5½... · 2019. 1. 8. · for Digestive Health specialize in gastroenterology, which covers all aspects of the digestive system. Our specialty includes

On April 17, 2016, I underwent colorectal surgery to remove a large section of my small and large intestines along with 27 lymph nodes. I was truly blessed - I did not need a custom-made colostomy bag. As the doctor had suspected, my pathology came back positive and I was diagnosed with Stage III Colon Cancer because it was also found in my lymph nodes. My life then became a whirlwind - I underwent a second surgery to have my chemotherapy port inserted and was told I would have to undergo six months of aggressive Folfox (5-FU!) chemo therapy.

After having received my first bout of chemo and not feeling well at all, I was driving near the intersection of Maple and Woodward Avenues in downtown Birmingham, Michigan. To my right I saw a gentleman sitting in a wheelchair waiting for his light to turn green to cross – and without knowing it, he became my angel and my courage and that was the moment I was determined to win my battle against cancer. The funny thing about all of this is that I have gone full circle with cancer. I have been a fundraiser for a variety of cancer charities for years via my CreepynCuteShop handmade doll making business, and have given the best courage and hope one can give to those fighting the fight. But now, it was my turn to fight with every ounce of girl power I had. I became the Chemo Princess Warrior.

Through those months of chemo therapy, my work as a paralegal kept me busy during the day. Keeping my creative hands busy designing the next CreepynCuteShop doll for charity fundraising was my happy place. I also knew that as long as I stayed positive and kept my head in the game, I could win this battle.

I was filled with hope and wanted to be a member of #teamsurvivor. Every time I started to feel sorry for myself on those days that I could barely get out of bed, the vision of my angel came to me which put a little kick back into my step. I also thought about kids who go through chemo and how positive they remained. And if they could do it, so could I.

Had I ignored the telltale signs of colorectal cancer? Probably. Was I afraid to have a colonoscopy? Absolutely! What was it that caused me to be so afraid to have a colonoscopy – the unknown. Today, I am here to tell you that there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of. Yes, the preparation can be somewhat hard to swallow, but with a blender and ice, there is nothing like a lemonlime Gatorade colon cleaner! Having puppy pads on your bed is

Page 18: TROY GASTROENTEROLOGY PC½x5½... · 2019. 1. 8. · for Digestive Health specialize in gastroenterology, which covers all aspects of the digestive system. Our specialty includes

perfect for a little extra security for accidents.

I never wanted my battle with cancer to be about me, but what I could do to reach out to help others. That is what gave me hope, strength and perseverance to get out of bed every day. I recently celebrated one year of chemo free good health. I will soon be celebrating two years of good health from my diagnosis date. I understand now more than ever why people go into this particular field of medicine.

My message is simple: having a colonoscopy is easy. Had I gone in for a colonoscopy instead of ignoring my symptoms and blaming what I ate would probably have saved me from being diagnosed with Stage III Colon Cancer. It’s quick, there is no pain and if you are afraid, I will go with you and hold your hand. And, of course, I will bring a pack of puppy pads!

I am grateful for the love and courage I received from my family and friends – and I am grateful I have a team of medical professionals by my side.
