Troubleshooting Computersin the FHC

Hardware Issues

• Computer will not turn on– Check power cable– Check power strip

• Computer is on, but screen is blank– Hard power-off the computer, unplug power cable

for 10 seconds• Keyboard and/or mouse not working– Unplug and plug in device, then wait for a few

minutes; or reboot

• Computer cannot access the Internet– Are other computers having the same issue?• Yes: Website might be down; internet in the FHC might

be down• No: Try a different browser; check ethernet cables;

Internet / Network

• Laptops using wireless cannot access the Internet– FHC’s Wireless Router: Reboot the wireless router– Try LDS Access– Website might be down; internet in the FHC might

be down; internet in entire building might be down

To reboot the wireless router:-Unplug the white power cable, let it sit for 10 seconds, plug in again. It will take several minutes to turn on again.

Internet / Network

• Computer cannot access “X” website– Are other computers having the same issue with

the same website?• Yes: Website might be down; internet in the FHC might

be down; internet in the building might be down; check power to switches• No: Try a different browser; check ethernet cables;

Internet / Network

• Printer not responding– Print job has been sent, printer doesn’t respond• Turn off printer, unplug power cable for 10 seconds;

plug in & turn on. Clear out print queue & resend print job• Confirm you are sending to the correct printer

• Network drives not available– Reboot

Sign In/Out

• Sign In/Out isn’t working properly– Log off & back in; hard reboot the computer– Confirm that network connection to server is

working properly• Sign In/Out icon is not on the desktop– Log off & back in or reboot the computer– Start -> All Programs -> Startup -> Sign In/Out– Confirm that network connection to server is

working properly

To hard-reboot a Computer:-Press and hold the powerbutton for 5+ seconds untilyou hear it shut off.

Sign In/Out

• By-passing Sign In/Out– Shift + Pause– Be careful not to let the

patrons see

• Sign In/Out is not saving sign-in’s or isn’t pulling up the list of people to sign-out– Clear Chrome’s browser cache

Misc

• Administrator permission message or request to log in as an administrator appears– This occurs when trying to install software,

whether initiated by the user or automatically by a piece of software

– Cancel the window– If this is a reoccurring issue, put in an entry in the

Computer Problems Log book with the name of the software and the computer number

Misc

• Certain keyboard keys are stuck and/or weird things happen when using the computer– Ctrl, Alt, Windows, Esc, F1-F12– Try pressing these keys to reset their up/down

status– Sign In/Out key locking script might be stuck. Try

closing it by using Shift + Pause, log off & back in or reboot
