Jesus’ Deity Jesus states that He has a heavenly origin.

“I came from the Father” – v 28 The disciples understood this – “This makes

us believe that you came from the Father” – v 30

They took Jesus to be the Messiah – John 3:2; 6:14; 11:27


John 3:2 (NASB)2 this man came to Jesus by night and said

to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”

John 6:14 (NASB)14 Therefore when the people saw the sign

which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

John 11:27 (NASB)27 She *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have

believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.”

Jesus’ Deity Jesus states that He has a heavenly origin.

Jesus’ Deity Jesus also talks of His Incarnation.

Jesus says He has “come” and “entered” as well as being “sent.”

Jesus is talking about Him voluntarily coming. Jesus was born because He wanted to be. Why would Jesus do that?

Jesus became man to be our Savior – Heb. 10:4-10


Hebrews 10:4-10 (NASB)4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and

goats to take away sins. 5 Therefore, when He comes into the world, He

says, “SACRIFICE AND OFFERING YOU HAVE NOT

DESIRED,BUT A BODY YOU HAVE PREPARED FOR ME;

6 IN WHOLE BURNT OFFERINGS AND sacrifices FOR SIN YOU HAVE TAKEN NO PLEASURE.

7 “THEN I SAID, ‘BEHOLD, I HAVE COME(IN THE SCROLL OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME)TO DO YOUR WILL, O GOD.’”

8 After saying above, “SACRIFICES AND OFFERINGS AND WHOLE BURNT OFFERINGS AND sacrifices FOR SIN YOU HAVE NOT DESIRED, NOR HAVE YOU TAKEN PLEASURE in them” (which are offered according to the Law),

9 then He said, “BEHOLD, I HAVE COME TO DO YOUR WILL.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second.

10 By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

John 10:17-18 (NASB)17 For this reason the Father loves Me,

because I lay down My life so that I may take it again.

18 No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”

Jesus’ Deity Jesus tells us He voluntarily left this

world. The crucifixion came about only as part of

God’s plan and timing – John 10:17-18. This was what Jesus’ entire ministry was

focused on and pointed to. This is true love, the voluntary and willing

death of Jesus.


Jesus’ Deity Jesus also tells us He has a heavenly

destiny and why. It shows the work of redemption is complete! It shows Jesus is in a place where He can

impart all spiritual gifts and blessings to us. The Holy Spirit Spiritual Gifts Intercession on our behalf


After completing the slides on Jesus’ Deity, Pastor Holmes read the following quote from Alexander MacLaren’s writings (born February 11, 1826, died May 5, 1910). The original published work and its date of publication are unknown.

“The meekest, lowliest, and most sane and wise of religious teachers made deliberately over and over again

this claim, which is either absolutely true, and lifts him into the region of the Deity, or else is fatal to his pretensions to be either meek or modest, or wise or sane, or a religious

teacher to whom it is worth our while to listen.”


Peace Jesus now tries to give the disciples a

realistic picture of life and troubles. Jesus says that they will soon be scattered. Jesus also says they will be confused. Jesus reveals that they will be isolated.

Notice that this is the exact opposite of the Jesus who stood firm in all the trouble and turmoil.


Peace Jesus also gives the disciples a departing

legacy – peace! John 14:27


John 14:27 (NASB)27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I

give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

Peace Jesus also gives the disciples a departing

legacy – peace! John 14:27 This peace is not the absence of conflict or

any other kind of trial or disappointment. This peace is contentment and trust in God

in spite of the circumstances.


Peace Peace is not automatic; it has two

conditions.1. This peace that Jesus gives is for Christians

only – “in Him”2. This peace comes from the words of Jesus

to His followers – “I told you these things”


Peace What are these things?

Jesus loves us unconditionally! Jesus guaranteed a personal place in heaven! Jesus gave all believers the indwelling of the Holy

Spirit! Jesus gave all believers a work and a meaningful

purpose! Jesus gave us the promise of powerful prayer and

direct access to the Father. Most importantly, Jesus tells us He has overcome

the world!
