from the editorThe League year is back in full swing asSeptember marks our first official meeting. Thatmeans very exciting and busy times are aheadincluding Biker Rally, Holiday Ball and plenty ofopportunities to volunteer through Fundraising,Cookbook and Outreach Opportunity.

This issue is dedicated to Celebrating Womenwith Moxie. As a League full of women whoexhibit determination and spunk on a daily basis, what better way to kick off the year?!

This month’s Loose Talk (page 8) questionbrought forth answers of famous women withmoxie, but I believe that there are many womenin our League who represent that exact samecharacteristic; women who spend hoursfundraising or in the hot sun with teenage girlsteaching them about health and wellness. Thereare those who spend countless hours makingsure Holiday Ball goes off without a hitch andthat our cookbook makes its way into the handsof every resident in our county. JLGC is full ofwomen with moxie.

Over the course of this League year we wouldlove to show off your hard work andcommitment in Tropical Topics by using morephotos of YOU working hard to make ourcommunity a better place to live, work, play andserve. So, next time you head out to volunteer, take those cameras along! You can send picturesto newssheet at [email protected] orupload them on our Snapfish website.

Happy September,

WELCOME BACK to the League year everyone! Although we have had a busy summer, yourleadership team has been implementing the annual plan full steam ahead. There are already a fewcommittees and projects addressing this year’s goals. This was evident when I received the 846.5volunteer hour count at the August Board meeting. These hours were collected as of June 1 and theyear is just truly beginning!

Adopt-A-School had a wonderful turnout on Saturday, August 13 at the KIPP: Coastal Villageelementary. About 28 packages of school supplies and 73 sets of school uniforms were distributed!Words cannot express the gratitude I received from the school and a few parents.

Hats off to the Arrangements committee for hosting Back to the League. We all had a wonderfultime meeting up with old friends and making new ones. It was nice to see a room full of eagerprovisionals. Those whom attended were able to participate in the first cookbook swap for the newbook. The Cookbook committee has a waiting list of swaps from other leagues and we were ableto purchase Junior League cookbooks from Beaumont and Plano that evening. Be sure to visit and“like” the Beachside to Boardwalk Facebook page.

The current calendar of events was distributed and can be obtained via our website atwww.jlgalveston.org. If you still have not logged in, please take the time to navigate through andverify that your contact information is correct. TheWebsite committee is updating andutilizingnewfeatures that Closerware (website software) has to offer including online sign-up opportunities forour events right from our website. Training for building and using the sign-up tool will be availableso be on the lookout.

I would like to remind everyone of this year’s new start time for general meetings. Please note thatthe social will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting will begin a half hour earlier at 6:30 p.m. We’llhave alternating meetings on and off the Island at new venues. The new hours will allot more timefor catching up and getting to know new friends following business.

This year I would like to implement a recognition program for membership modeled from anothernon-profit institution and awaken the competitive spirit in each of us to be the best volunteer we canpossibly be. The Member of the Month recognition award will recognize those members thatdemonstrate the Code of Conduct/Core Values and Standards of Behavior throughout the month. This member will clearly go the extra mile and above and beyond her call of volunteerresponsibilities. Those members nominated two or more times throughout the year willautomatically go into the hat for annual volunteer awards (Chair, Volunteer andActive of the year). The criteria and nomination form follow. All nominations should be submitted directly tome eitherin person, via E-mail at [email protected] or via the nomination box at the general meetings. Those recognized will be announced at each general meeting.

Thanks toeachofyou for continuing todowhatyoudo for thecommunity through the JuniorLeague.I am looking forward to the “waves of change and oceans of opportunities” as One League for OneMission and I hope that you all are as well.

See you soon!Yvette

Terri Sireno Burchfield, formerLeague President 2004-2005, has beeninvolved with JLGC since 1996. Terridecided to join the League as a way togive back to the community she grewup in - and of course, have a little funalong the way!

During her active League years, Terrienjoyed a variety of placement oppor-tunities but says that writing curricu-lum for Books Alive! was one of her fa-vorite placements. When asked why,she explains that this project allowedher to do what she does best – workwith kids! She has served in positionsinclude as Newsheet Chair, Communi-

ty Vice-Pres-ident, andMembershipDevelop-ment Chair. Not only didthese place-ments offerthe chanceto work with some amazing ladies, theyalso helped refine leadership skills thatshe continues to utilize on a daily basis.

When Terri isn’t busy working as theDirector of Special Programs for TexasCity ISD or running after her three fab-ulous boys, Ty (12), Trent (10), andTate (6), she is writing her doctoraldissertation. Many say life calms downwhen you leave the League and goSustaining – but as far as Terri is con-cerned, that doesn't seem to be so true!
