Drama club attends play at Avila

by Olga Zhuk November 17, the THS Drama Club and Adviser Martha-Jean Rockey went to Avila Univer-sity to attend the stu-dent matinee of William Shakespeare’s A Mid-summer Night’s Dream. “I was confused at first, but then after get-ting into the play I re-ally liked it,” said senior Amaia Espinel. One interesting thing about this is that students made the whole play by themselves: decorations, stage, costumes, lights- students designed all of

Scholars bowl has first meetby Jessica Guffy

This year’s schol-ars bowl team com-peted at their first meet, Tuesday, November 29, at Doniphan West. They came home with a total of two out of a possible five games, beating Doniphan West and Horton and losing to

Members of the team are Shane Miller, Rus-sell Ostertag, William Boeh, Elizabeth Hale, Dillon Simpson, Sky-ler Sherman, Derek Holman, Trae Shelton, Braden Hansen, Ash-ley Stock, and sponsor Mrs. Stephanie Affield. Scholars Bowl is a pro-

gram for students who wish to compete against other schools, quizzing about multiple high school subjects.. It is a question-and-answer contest between two teams, each of which has no more than five play-ers. Each round consists of two 5-minute halves

and a 1-minute halftime. Substitutions may be made only at halftime. A team’s roster may be changed between rounds. Competition is by single elimination.

Multimedia class wins camerasented it to Mrs. Jenet Brown and multimedia students Kendra Lysa-ght, Tyler Teague, Millie King, and Jesse Adkins. “It was just basically a contest for submitting videos. We send our vid-eo to the local TV station and won the drawing part,” said Mrs. Brown.

THS multimedia classes recently won a Sony Handicam for the classroom for their video submissions to Rainbowtel channel 68. Rainbowtel communi-cations staff brought the camera by and pre-

it and made it real. “I liked the play a lot, but I didn’t like the stage setting,” said Haley Whetstine. Most of the actors andstaff were juniors and seniors, but there were some talented freshmen too. “It was very interest-ing, but the costumes were a little weird. It was not what I expected about Shakespeare’s work,” said junior Han-na King. After the play the stu-dents went to Oak Park Mall where they were

ASVAB test

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test was taken by all the juniors Wednes-day, November 30. The testing was given at no cost to the school. This test helps students learn about themselves and what they want to do af-ter high school, accord-ing to their interests. The ASVAB is over general science, arith-metic reasoning, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, math-ematics, electronics information, auto and shop information, and mechanical compre-hension. This test does not affect a student’s grades in school; no one can pass or fail. After they receive results, a representa-tive comes and talks to them about their re-sults. When the testing is over they can explore over 400 occupations at www.asvabprogram.

Groups have activities for the holidaysby Jessica Guffy, Court-ney Klaus, Baileigh Jenkins

by Courtney Klaus bers and 5 chaperones going on the trip. Each individual had to come up with about $680 each, plus food money. Food money includes break-fast, lunch, and dinner. When they arrive in San Antonio, they will have to rest up for the week ahead of them. They will be playing in the “Battle of the Bands” and the bowl game. For the halftime show of the Alamo Bowl, the band will be play-ing two songs, “Ain’t no

Mountain High Enough” by Dianna Ross & the Su-premes and “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. The band had to do mul-tiple fundraisers to make this possible. These in-cluded Celebrating Home, Feast of Carols, volleyball tournaments, biscuits and gravy feed/silent auc-tion, Red Wheel, etc. With all of these fundraisers they were able to make the money they needed.

During the month of December, many groups have activities underway.

Kayettes This year’s Kay-ettes participated in many Christmas-related activities. They deco-rated the gazebo by put-ting up the Christmas tree and decorating it for when Santa Claus comes to visit, then they help take it down.

They participated in Secret Santa, where each member draws names for whom they will purchase a gift and they Adopt-A-Family, which helps families who are in crisis en-joy a special holiday. This is a hands-on project to select a family to help. Courtney Klaus, Baileigh Jenkins, Jessica Guffy, Jessica Burton, Claire Marriott and Kal-lie Koehler all helped

the communitity present gifts for the ones in need. Kayettes also de-signed Christmas orna-ments to place on the trophy case in the high school by the office. “I think Kayettes is good this year be-cause we’re getting more involved in the community,” said se-nior Haley Whetstine.

by Olga Zhuk Everybody was excited about the new Twilight movie coming out. Fi-nally, in November the movie was released. Ev-erybody including grade schoolers, teenagers and adults were all talking about this movie. Why was Breaking Dawn such a big success? Honestly, after read-ing all the Twilight Saga books, I thought the movie couldn’t surprise me anymore. I thought that it would not be so interesting if I already knew what will be going on, but I was mistaken. The movie was really great, and even those who are not Twilight fans liked it too. However, it received mostly nega-tive reviews from critics. Part 1, rated PG-13, was released November 18, 2011, and Part 2 will be released November 16, 2012. As of Novem-ber 27, the movie had grossed $488,832,009 worldwide.

What I didn’t like, is that there were a lot of nasty parts. For example, they show her body and we can see her bones, because she looks anorexic, or the part where she is having a baby, there was too much blood shown. The great thing is that they didn’t change the original story and did everything ex-actly like in the book. However, they split up this movie in to two parts, and now many people don’t like that they have to wait until next November to see the second part. I think it made the film more interesting and they actually finished the first part at a very logical moment. Now those who didn’t read the book have some-thing to think about. I can also say that obviously in the cinema there were mostly girls, because boys don’t really like vampire love stories. Anyway, despite all negative criticism, Breaking Dawn is very popular, and I would recommend it.

Breaking Dawnmore than we expected

Wyck Godfrey and Karen Rosenfelt served as executive producers for the film, along with the author of the series, Stephenie Meyer; the screenplay was written by Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter of the first three entries. Three main cast members were Kristen Stewart, Rob-ert Pattinson, and Tay-lor Lautner, of course. In Part 1, Bella and Ed-ward finally get married and go on the real honey-moon on a private island in Brazil. Two weeks later, Bella discovers that she is pregnant and the baby grows too fast. Everybody but Bella wants to kill that half human, half vampire, because it destroys her from the inside. She re-fuses to have an abortion, so now nobody knows what their future will be like. Moreover, because of Bella’s pregnancy, the wolf pack splits into two. I liked this movie much more than the previous ones. The good thing about it is that Kristen Stewart finally showed more emotion in the movie and looked more alive, not like in the pre-vious movies, where she looked numb most of the time. Also, I liked her outfit in this part more. Robert Pattinson didn’t change much, but Tay-lor Lautner looked more mature this time.

He SaysShe Says

Believe in Christmas

“Looking ahead to Christmas,

what gift would you recommend for a significant

other?”

“ A t-shirt to make him look like he belongs with me,” said senior Kendra Lysaght.

“Probably some jewelry, chocolate, or roses,” said sophomore Daulton Jasper.

“Definitely a bouquet of roses,” said freshman Braden Grossman.

“Probably a t-shirt or hoodie of his favorite band, and some new shoes,” said junior Olivia Robinson.

by Olga Zhuk Everybody is busy with their lives: school, jobs, friends, sports. We don’t even have time to look around and notice some-thing outside our “box.” As the first snow falls and the Christmas tree is set up, Christmas spirit comes to town. Everybody becomes un-explainably happy and nice, and the radio plays Christmas songs. This moment you understand that Christmas is near. Holiday mood, white snow, happy people and smiling faces make you feel like something fab-ulous is going on. Every grown-up has a little child sleeping inside of him, and during Christ-mas this child wakes up. Do you remember yourself watching snow-

flakes falling down at least one time during the winter? Sliding from hills and playing snow-balls like kids? Don’t you feel something magical while decorat-ing the Christmas tree? We are still kids at heart, and even after re-alizing in grade school that not all the magic is real, a small part of us still believes that magic may exist. It sounds crazy, but let yourself have fun. Don’t worry about being “cool” and serious. You will al-ways have time for it. Right now it is your time to enjoy Christmas with your family and friends. Do crazy and childish things; laugh and have a lot of happy moments. This is your Christmas; spend it the

way you will remem-ber it your whole life. Christmas is very im-portant for me. It is the time when I don’t worry about anything at all. I just spend my time the way I want, when I chill out with my friends at the town square, take pictures near the huge Christmas tree, and then warm myself with tea in the cafeteria. It is my time for long talks, lots of laughs, surprises, presents, and freedom. Last winter was the best winter in my life. I wish I could make it this year too, but I cannot. I’m too far away from home and friends, from everything I’m used to. But you guys are here, at your home. Enjoy it; make it unforgettable. You will miss this time; trust me.

Christmas is the time for happiness and mir-acles. Don’t think that your life is too miser-able and nothing good will ever happen to you. On Christmas wonders happen. I don’t mean that suddenly your life will just become per-fect, but, who knows, maybe on Christmas you will fall in love with someone and live hap-pily ever after, or your old friend whom you haven’t seen for ages calls you to wish you Merry Christmas. The point is that we can do miracles by ourselves; we don’t need Santa Claus to do them for us. Start with small things; smile more and say good things to people; maybe it can make someone’s day better.

Maybe even a visit to your grandma will be a Christmas gift for her. Look around; ev-erything is wonderful: White shining snow, which reflects sun-shine; the breath of winter; the sound of the crunchy snow. Doesn’t it make you feel like holiday is near? Doesn’t it make you smile, at least for a second? It’s our Christmas, and only we can make it happy. So don’t waste it; just believe in it.

“Waking up and seeing presents under the tree,” said freshman Derek Fran-ken.

“In 2008 when my brother and his wife told me they were expecting a baby boy,” said sophomore Kal-lie Koehler.

“In 1946, before bed my brother and I peeked through a hole in the floor and we saw Santa put plas-tic airplanes in our stock-ings; the next morning we got rocks from our parents for peeking,” said Mr. V. “Whenever my family and

I go to my grandma’s,” said junior Jeff Weather-ford.

“When none of my family members were absent for Christmas,” said senior Ashley Burton.

by Tanner Weishaar Do you like receiv-ing gifts at Christmas time? It is always fun to get gifts at Christ-mas, but do we only think of ourselves? Christmas is not only a time to be thankful, but also a time to give. When your mom askes you to make your Christmas list, but you can’t really come up with anything particu-lar you want, is that saying something? Is it maybe suggesting you have everything? These are the moments that we should stop and think about the chil-dren who don’t receive

any presents during the Christmas holiday. Many churches partic-ipate in multiple activi-ties to help get presents for children all around the world. This includes shoe box gifts, Adopt-a- Family, and Angel tags. The shoe box gifts include picking either a girl or a boy to buy a gift for. There are also different age groups that you can choose from. You buy the child a gift for Christmas and then send it to them. I’m sure the kids are thrilled to get them, because they never get any-thing extra to play with.

You can also adopt a family during Christ-mas. This includes buy-ing supplies that they may need and also buying the kids toys. Many children all over the world wake up on Christmas morning and find no presents to open. How do you think the child would feel? Did Santa not come see me? We can easily change all of this. Instead of buying so many presents for ourselves, give to the children who truly need them. The fact of giv-ing to little kids all over the world just makes my heart melt. Next time

What is your favorite Christmas memory?

Giving at Christmas feels good you are out buying gifts pick up something ex-tra and make a child’s Christmas special.

Feet-suspended push upThis is a great workout for getting a defined chest, and strengthening your shoulders and triceps. It is a workout anyone can do; all you need is your body and a place to stick your feet. If you want to get extreme you can change the elevation of your feet. When it gets too easy, go for the dive bomber and get almost vertical. This workout has one key flaw that every-one makes and that is they stick their feet too far back on the bench and don’t keep on their toes. Instead they put their feet flat on a bench making it easier. Make sure to keep on your toes and to stay at the edge of the bench.

Girls take second in tourney

By Jacob Stock The Trojans went 1-2 in the Round Robin tournament, placing third out of four teams. Overall it was a pretty good show-ing for the Trojans. In the Trojans’ first game, Tuesday, Decem-ber 6, they got blown out by the MH-MA Ra-vens, 36-61. Of the Tro-jan’s 36 points, 12 came from Dylan Norris, while Collin Jasper and Alex Schmille scored 8, Preston Foley andReece Simpson scored 3, and Jake Stock scored 2. The Trojans had only 31 rebounds and 10 steals while having 20 turnovers and 19 fouls. Friday, December 9, the Trojans were matched with the Doni-phan West Mustangs on

closer than it appeared. The Trojans’ scor-ing was pretty bal-anced with Schmille, 15; Jasper, 12; Stock, 5; Simpson, 3; Norris, 2; and Foley, 2. The

by Jacob Stock The Lady Trojans were fighting to get their name back on the plaque for the second year in a row but took only second. In their first game, Tuesday, December, 6, at MH-MA, the Lady Tro-jans won a close battle 33-19. The scoring was pretty even with Claire Turpin scoring 9, Paige Fenley, 8; Kelli Mar-riot ,7; Tanner Weishaar, 5; and Alanie Stock, 4. Friday, December 9, the Lady Trojans were in a nail-biter against the Doniphan West Mustangs. The scoring

was again pretty even with Fenley scoring 8, Turpin, 6; Marriott and Stock, 4; and Alex Wind-er, 2, but they fell short, losing by one point. Saturday, Decem-ber 10, the Trojans beat the Riverside Cy-clones on Stock’s last-

Season begins with tournament their home court. They won a grind-it-out-style of game 64-55. The Tro-jans had a big lead late in the fourth quarter but let the Mustangs cut the lead by fouling and hav-ing them making their free-throws. That was something the Trojans couldn’t do, making only 38% of theirs. The leading scorer for the Trojans was Norris who scored 15, with Jasper, 13; William Boeh, 10; Stock, 8; Foley, 7; Trev-or Bembrick, 5; Simp-son, 4; and Schmille, 2. The Trojans had 43 rebounds, 19 assists, 10 steals, and 6 blocks while having 23 turn-overs and 24 fouls. Saturday, December 10, the Trojans lost to the Riverside Cyclones, 39-54 although it was
