From the PTA

Happy New Year to all M-A families! We hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable winter break. Many thanks to Catherine McMillan and Mary Zarucchi for organizing a most efficient schedule distribution on the first day of the second semester. Before we talk about things to come in the second semester, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the 2014 holiday season. We are fortunate to have dedicated teachers who connect with our incredibly diverse student population on a daily basis. We are also lucky to have two amazing M-A student groups that were instrumental in making this holiday season joyous for all. The M-A PTA gives special thanks to the PTA Canned Food Drive chairs, Lori Cohen and Paula Rash. Under the leadership of teachers Mike Amoroso, Jonathan Senigaglia, and Andy Stuart, M-A students collected a rec-ord number of cans, which were donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank. M-A students, parents and com-munity volunteers then assembled bundles of food, in terrific re-useable bags, donated by the Gates/Morris family, that were given to recipient families. In addition to providing food to families in need, some very special people made sure that all M-A families had gifts for the holidays. We owe thanks to PTA Outreach Club Support Chair Mari Chazen, who worked with teacher Michele Breen and her wonderful Outreach Club students. M-A teachers identified students whose fam-ilies were struggling to provide holiday gifts for their children. Many M-A families, along with the Outreach Club, then pitched in to make sure these M-A families had a wonderful day with gifts to unwrap. We are so ap-preciative of all of the work involved to ensure that all M-A families had a special and fun holiday season. As we look ahead, planning for the M-A Fashion Show is in full swing. Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 22! Thanks to our co-chairs, Karen Fryling, Mary Fischer, Nancy Kessler and Michele Culhane, who have al-ready put in many hours of hard work to make this year’s show a success and who will guide our seniors to en-joy this bonding experience fully. We are thrilled to announce that Charleston Pierce is once again working with us to ensure that our seniors have an amazing experience on the runway. While the seniors are the stars of the show, we appreciate help from parents of students of all ages to help make this day a huge success. And as all students benefit from the funds raised by the Fashion Show, we are encouraging families and local businesses to help underwrite or place ads in the spectacular fashion show program. This is also a terrific event to invite in-coming 8th graders to share in the fantastic M-A experience. Finally, we’re thrilled to announce the electronic directory is now ready. A huge thank you goes out to Brian LaPorte for preparing all the data and to Ken Wang for creating and testing our new app. Please take a few minutes to try out the new features available on-line, http://directory.mabearspta.org/. You can now search for an M-A family’s phone number knowing just part of the student’s name or perhaps just a parent’s name. We hope these increased capabilities help our community keep in touch and better communicate with one another. If, after trying out the directory, you still would like a printed version, you can request one by filling out the form at http://www.mabearspta.org/communications/student-directory/. Please complete the form by February 14th. The

printed directories will then be delivered to your youngest child’s classroom when they are available. We hope that 2015 is a wonderful year for you and your M-A students. Shari Conrad and Juliana Andersen, PTA Co-Presidents

Canned Food Drive Thank You! M-A Leadership wants to thank everyone who donated to or helped out with our annual canned food drive this year. We passed our goal of 200,000 cans and collected approximately 204,000. We could not have accom-plished this without the support of our amazing M-A community. All of the students went above and beyond this year, reaching out to the community by “canning” outside local grocery stores at all hours of the day, and soliciting countless donations from local businesses. Additionally, our distribution day at Ecumenical Hunger Program in East Palo Alto was a huge success. With help from over 100 volunteers, we fed over 300 families, providing about three weeks’ worth of food to help them through the holidays. Our canned food drive is a wonderful collaboration between the students, parents, and the community, bringing people together to help those in need both at our school and in the local area. To anyone who helped out this year, we in the Leader-ship program just want to offer you a warm and enthusiastic THANK YOU!

From the Guidance Office Important Information for Spring 2015

Drop Deadlines

• The last day to drop a class without a record appearing on your transcript is February 17. • The last day to drop a class with a record of withdrawal passing (WP) or withdrawal failing (WF) appearing

on your transcript is April 7; the latter will impact your grade point average. First Semester Grades

• First semester grades were mailed the week of January 12, 2015, and the next progress report period will be mailed the week of February 23.

• Reminder: Grading periods are every four and a half weeks. Reviewing first semester grades with your stu-dent is a great opportunity to discuss improvements for second semester. Be sure to check School Loop for information about grades and assignments.

Policy for Requesting Homework for Ill Students

• When a student is out ill for three days or more, please phone the Guidance Office (650-322-5311 ext. 50121 or ext. 50122) to request homework. We will then contact the student’s teachers. A homework folder will be set up in the Guidance Office and you can pick up the homework at the end of the day. Our office hours are 7:30 am-3:45 pm.

• For students out less than three days, please check School Loop, e-mail teachers directly, or have students check with their friends. Go to the Menlo-Atherton High School website at www.mabears.org to find your stu-dent’s teachers’ e-mail addresses.

Class of 2015

• Students who apply to private colleges need to request mid-year reports from the Guidance Office using the Mid-Year Transcript Request form. Students need to complete and submit this form along with a $5.00 flat fee to Mrs. Fran Huber during the month of January 2015.

• Graduation will take place on June 4, 2015 at 4:00 pm. Please plan accordingly.

Classes of 2016-2018 • Registration for 2015-16: Guidance Counselors will be meeting with returning students beginning in January

2015 in order to register for classes for the 2015-16 academic year. Registration meetings will continue throughout the months of February and March 2015. This is an opportunity for you to start discussing course selection with your student for the coming school year and to plan for an appropriate and balanced course load. Confirmation notices will be mailed home in May 2015. Please note that once the 2015-16 school year starts and classes have been finalized, students will remain in their elective classes, in-cluding math, science and world language classes above minimum graduation requirements. This policy will be strictly enforced.

• CAHSEE: All students are required to pass the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) to re-ceive a high school diploma. State law mandates this graduation requirement. Students’ first opportunity to take the CAHSEE is in the spring of the tenth grade. The current tenth graders will take the CAHSEE on March 17 and 18, 2015.

• Cañada Middle College High School Program: Cañada Middle College is an alternative for eleventh and twelfth grade students with high potential who have the skills and sense of responsibility to succeed on a col-lege campus. Students attend Cañada College, where they take college classes in the morning and high school classes taught by high school teachers in the afternoon. These are semester classes, not open-entry. Students

Career Center

Career Center I would like to encourage all M-A seniors and their parents, along with any interested juniors and their parents, to attend Community College Night at M-A on Thursday, February 5, from 6:00-8:00 pm. At this excellent event, students will learn about getting started at community college, paying for community college, both trans-fer programs and career/certificate programs, and student life. The evening will begin with 30-45 minutes for students/parents to enjoy free pizza while visiting with representatives from our five local community colleges (Cañada, CSM, Skyline, Foothill, and DeAnza). Following the time for information tables, a panel will talk about community college in general, answering questions about all aspects of community college and motivating stu-dents to begin their education at one of California’s 100+ community colleges. Students must sign up for this event in the Career Center; an RSVP by February 2 is necessary so I will know how much pizza to order and how many chairs we will need. RSVP to tinyurl.com/ccnrsvp. People who have attended this event in the past have found it extremely valuable—and fun! Alice Kleeman

Alice Kleeman

Mathematics Choices With students beginning to register for 2015-16 classes in late January and February, now is a good time to think about options available from the math department. Common Core changes are now the major focus of the math department, and all of our math teachers are em-bracing the new changes. We are currently introducing them in our algebra, geometry, and algebra II classes. In mathematics, the Sequoia District is planning a three-year rollout. We are formally teaching Common Core al-gebra this year, introducing Common Core geometry next year and finally adding Common Core algebra II in 2016-2017. The biggest change in content is that statistics will be heavily emphasized and integrated into the algebra and algebra II classes. Students will also be more engaged in solving open-ended real world problems. Another major difference is that all standardized math testing, which will be computer based, will take place on-ly in the Junior year. The one exception to this is the High School Exit exam, which will continue to be first administered to students in spring of their Sophomore year. M-A requires a minimum of two years of math to graduate. The UC system and the California state colleges re-quire at least three years of math, including algebra II, and any student planning to attend a four-year college should complete at least through algebra II. Students can improve their college eligibility by taking as much math as possible in the traditional sequence of algebra I, geometry, algebra II, pre-calculus, and calculus. Stu-dents who have difficulty with algebra I may decide to take integrated math, a bridge course, before moving on-to geometry. Algebra is considered the gateway course to college; without it, college success is unlikely. Algebra I is required for M-A graduation and is part of the math content of the California High School Exit Exam. Beyond that, as one of our calculus teachers, I can tell you that algebra skills can significantly affect a student’s calculus perfor-mance throughout the year. Calculus teachers have a saying: “Many times when solving a calculus problem, the first step is calculus and the rest is all algebra.” M-A has two options for the third year of math required by the California schools: AS algebra II and algebra II. The prerequisite for AS algebra II is a minimum of a B in geometry, while algebra II requires only a C in geome-try. AS algebra II is intended primarily for sophomores and freshman who intend to complete calculus. Algebra II is intended for seniors and juniors who have found math challenging but who still want rigorous preparation for college math courses. Please discuss these differences with your student if he or she plans to enroll in AS or regular algebra II next year. The math department strongly recommends that juniors and seniors enroll in alge-bra II, not AS algebra II. Juniors leaving algebra II can take statistics or algebra II/trigonometry, which will pre-pare them for pre-calculus or other math courses required in college.

Another option for juniors or seniors is AP statistics or statistics. AP statistics requires completion of or con-current enrollment in pre-calculus, while statistics requires completion of or concurrent enrollment in algebra II. The two courses differ in pacing and content. AP statistics is a fun, hands-on course, but it moves at an intense pace, twice as fast as statistics. Statistics allows students more time to practice and master the material. The math department encourages students to take two math courses concurrently so that they can complete calculus and AP statistics. The majority of students taking AP statistics are also enrolled in AP calculus or pre-calculus. Cur-rently at M-A 160 students are taking AP statistics or statistics. Students also have the option of taking BC calculus or AB calculus. The complicated difference between these courses is explained in an annual January meeting of parents and students. Do note for future planning that BC calculus students participate in a four-week summer program (June 8 through July 2 this year) immediately fol-lowing their pre-calculus course. This year, for students who complete BC in their junior year, we are now offer-ing multi-variable calculus.

CAHSEE: The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) is still M-A’s most important standardized ex-am. We support the math content of the CAHSEE exam and believe it is a reasonable exam to pass. Seniors (class of 2015) have already had several opportunities to pass it and will have more opportunities. The math de-partment offers a CAHSEE math-preparation class for interested students. This year’s sophomores (class of 2017) will be taking the CAHSEE exams for the first time on March 17 and 18. An eight-week program of daily review sessions has been integrated in the appropriate sophomore math classes.

If you have questions about the math department offerings, feel free to call Jen Payne at (650) 322-5311 ext. 8719, or send an email to [email protected]. Jen Payne, Math Department Chair

Our seniors will be “M-AKING FASHION H15TORY” as the class of 2015 takes the stage!

Date: Saturday, March 21, 2015 Times: Luncheon at 11:45 am

Shows at 1 pm, 4 pm, and 7:30 pm Place: M-A PAC

The Fashion Show is a professionally choreographed, high-energy production that has been a tradition at M-A for more than thirty-five years. If you haven’t attended an M-A Fashion Show, we highly recommend it for par-ents and students of all ages. The Fashion Show is the event that caps off the M-A experience for our graduat-ing class. This production brings together the generous and energetic community of M-A. Almost two hundred seniors will strut their stuff in the finest fashions that have been generously contributed by a variety of stores in our community. The seniors will be professionally choreographed by the team from Charleston Pierce Productions. Many members of our local community and hundreds of parent volunteers from all grade levels will come to-gether to create this year’s show, “M-Aking Fashion H15tory.” This spectacular event is one you won’t want to miss, and it’s also our PTA’s major fundraiser. There are many ways you can contribute to this critical fundraiser. Consider joining as a volunteer (and have fun in the process) by sending an e-mail to Becky Flanagan at [email protected] or Lee Ann Yasukawa at [email protected]. You won’t be disappointed. Being a part of the Fashion Show before your child is a senior gives you a sense of how amazing this experience is for our students, parents, and community. You can also support the Fashion Show by underwriting or advertising in the program to help cover the pro-ductions costs of the show. Please send advertising and underwriting inquiries to Michele Culhane at [email protected] or Nancy Kessler at [email protected]. More information on tickets to the Fashion Show and the luncheon, which go on sale in February, will be included in upcoming BearNotes. You may also get in-formation on the M-A PTA Senior Fashion Show 2015 Facebook page. The seniors will definitely be “M-AKING FASHION H15TORY” on this very special night. We look forward to seeing you at the Fashion Show on March 21. Thank you in advance for your support of the M-A PTA.

Boys’ Varsity Basketball Giving Back The boys’ varsity basketball team not only had a busy winter break with six basketball games and numerous practice sessions, but also allocated time to spend a Sunday morning helping out at the Ecumenical Hunger Program (EHP) in East Palo Alto. Each player also brought a gift to give to children there. Administrative Manager and Volunteer Coordinator Akala Francis said, "The team was very helpful and enthu-siastic about serving. They helped to organize and sort food, pack food boxes, and help clients take their food boxes to their cars. The team treated the clients with respect, which is very important when serving at EHP. They were compassionate and kind. The coach was personable, and we were able to see how much he cared for his team. Overall, their positive attitudes and great work ethic was a tremendous help during the distribution. We look forward to working with the team again." Great job, boys!

Left to right, standing in the photo are Lucas Fioretti, Danny LaPorte, Ryan Cole, Tim Andersen, Bradley Stillman, Myles Nunez, Chris-tian Fioretti, Bobby Macdonald, Whittaker Jellins, Blake Henry, and Eric Norton. Kneeling is Kailen Kershner. Pictured with the team and Coach Mike Molieri are Nevida Butler, Community Outreach (standing next to Coach Mo) and Suliana Finau, Warehouse (kneeling next to Kailen). Suliana’s main role is working the warehouse. Nevida works in the warehouse as well as attending various speaking engagements. During the holiday distribution, Nevida and Suliana oversee the food box distribution, which includes managing volunteers, organizing and managing food distribution, and servicing clients.

What an amazing year for our Bears, and there is more to come!! Athletic Clearance Packets Spring sports start on February 2nd, and Athletic Clearance Packets final due date is the same date. Please note that it is a good idea to turn them in at least a week early to allow the office some time for processing. Commissioner’s Cup Race In the fall season, M-A Bears won 10 league titles out of a possible 17! Going into winter season, M-A currently has a commanding 24.5 point lead in the Commissioner's Cup race, signifying that our Bears still hold the honor of having the most successful Athletics program in the Peninsula Athletic League. We have won this honor for the last six years straight and are poised to take it again this year. Girls’ Volleyball The girls’ volleyball team won CCS and were runners up in Nor Cal, narrowly missing out on the State champi-onship game. Grants M-A Athletic Boosters is gearing up for our spring granting session. We are confident we will be able to contin-ue to support our Bears as they positively represent M-A. Thank you so much to our contributors!!!

M-A’s Own PSAT/SAT Prep

The course offered by M-A's Own SAT Prep that is aimed at stu-dents taking the May or June exam is now open for enrollment. The course will begin in March and will conclude the week the May SAT is given. There are also spaces available for the course starting February 9 to prep for the March SAT. We meet on campus on Mondays and Tuesdays, 3:30 to 5 pm. Our fee, between $100 and $225, includes all necessary materials and is determined by actual enrollment when students take their seats. The parent or guardian is responsible for payment once the student is seated.

We cover the essay with individual attention. We teach technique and discuss strategy. We’ve been offering the-se courses since 1980, so we know our course works, especially for students who truly want to be there. M-A Parent Education Series Tackles Student Stress Nine years ago, Menlo-Atherton was one of the first public high schools invited to join Denise Pope, PhD, in the highly successful SOS: Stressed-Out Students Project at Stanford University. When Dr. Pope addressed M-A parents in 2007, she described how student stress was increasing mental health concerns including anxiety and depression, reducing students’ engagement with learning, and negatively impacting academic integrity. Den-ise Pope, co-founder of nonprofit Challenge Success, Stanford Graduate School of Education, returns to Menlo-Atherton on Tuesday, February 3, in The Well-Balanced Child. In this presentation, she will suggest ways that parents can help reduce academic stress without sacrificing achievement or engagement in school. In addi-tion, Dr. Pope will offer strategies for increasing students’ resilience, creativity, and well-being. On April 6, the M-A Parent Education Series is honored to host bestselling author and NY Times columnist Frank Bruni in a discussion of his soon-to-be-released book, Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be. In his new book, Bruni addresses what he calls the “brutal, deeply flawed competition” of the college admission process: “I wrote a book that examines the fallacies of it all and seeks to relieve the unwarranted anxiety that so many kids and parents feel.” Bruni hopes to show that many kinds of colleges—from large public universities to small lib-eral arts colleges—can be springboards to happy lives. Alice Kleeman, M-A college advisor, a contributing ex-pert to Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be, will moderate the Q & A following Frank Bruni’s presentation. The final event of the season brings an acclaimed new documentary film, The Mask You Live In, written, pro-duced and directed by Jennifer Seibel Newsom, founder of The Representation Project. This film, from the makers of the award-winning documentary Miss Representation, takes an unsparing look at how we as a society are failing our boys. Mark your calendars now for these great events! 2014-15 Second Semester Offerings: Tuesday, February 3, 2015 The Well-Balanced Student, with Denise Pope, PhD, Challenge Success, Stanford University 7:00-8:30 pm, M-A PAC Monday, April 6, 2015 Frank Bruni, New York Times op-ed columnist and author of Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be: An Antidote to the College Admis-sions Mania.
