    On April 9, 2003, Satyabhama Mahapatra, a 65-year-oldretired schoolteacher in India, became the world's oldestmother when she gave birth to a baby boy. Satyabhama andher husband had been married 50 years, but this is their firstchild. The baby was conceived through artificial insemination

    using eggs from the woman's 26-year-old niece, VeenaraniMahapatra, and the sperm of Veenarani's husband.

    UPDATE: The oldest known birth mother in the worldcurrently is Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara of Spain whogave delivered twins at the age of 66 in 2006.

    UPDATE: On November 28, 2008, 70-year old Rajo Devi ofIndia gave birth to her first child, a baby girl, after IVFtreatments.

    Bobbie McCaughey is the mother who holds the record for themost surviving children from a single birth. She gave birth to

    the first set of surviving septuplets - four boys and three girls-on November 19, 1997, at the University Hospital, Iowa, US.Conceived by in vitro fertilization, the babies were deliveredafter 31 weeks by caesarean in the space of 16 minutes. Thebabies are named Kenneth, Nathaniel, Brandon, Joel, Kelsey,Natalie and Alexis.

    NOTE: The first confirmed birth of octuplets occurred onMarch 10, 1967 in Mexico City, Mexico to Maria TeresaLpez de Sepulveda. All of the babiesfour boys and fourgirlsdied within 13 hours of birth.

    NOTE:The first live birth of octuplets in the U.S. happened

    Jayne Bleackley is the mother who holds the record for theshortest interval between two children born in separateconfinements. She gave birth to Joseph Robert on September3, 1999, and Annie Jessica Joyce on March 30, 2000. Thebabies were born 208 days apart.

    Elizabeth Ann Buttle is the mother who holds the record forthe longest interval between the birth of two children. Shegave birth to Belinda on May 19,1956 and Joseph onNovember 20, 1997. The babies were born 41 years 185 daysapart. The mother was 60 years old when her son Joseph wasborn.

    The highest officially recorded number of children born to onemother is 69, to the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev (1707-1782) of Shuya, Russia. Between 1725 and 1765, in a total of

    27 confinements, she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, sevensets of triplets, and four sets of quadruplets. 67 of themsurvived infancy.

    The modern world record for giving birth is held by LeontinaAlbina from San Antonio, Chile. Leontina claims to be themother of 64 children, of which only 55 of them aredocumented. She is listed in the 1999 Guinness WorldRecords but dropped from later editions.

    51-year-old Rosinete Palmeira Serrao, gave birth to twins onSeptember 30, 2007 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Serrao served as asurrogate mother after four years of failed attempts atpregnancy by her 27-year-old daughter, Claudia Michelle deBrito.

    One early reference to an aged mother can be found in theBible, where Sarah is described as having given birth to herhusband Abraham's son, Isaac, at the age of 90.

    Elizabeth Edwards, wife of the former U.S. Senator and VicePresential nominee John Edwards, gave birth to son Jack in2000 at the age of 51. The couple decided to have childrenagain after their 16-year-old son was killed in a car accident in1996.
