The production of Solid Recovered Fuels (SRF) and Refuse Derived Fuels (RDF) is a strategic component of integrated waste management policy. It also forms part of energy strategy and the fight against climate change. The preparation of SRF/RDF from reject basically involves subjecting this reject to treatment to create appropriate particle size and texture, whilst removing inappropriate materials and reducing moisture content. Secondary shredders play a particularly important role in this process.
For this reason, in line with its objective to become a benchmark publication in the waste management and recovery market, FuturENVIRO presents the first of a series of specials that will serve as reference and consultation guides for technical experts in the recycling industry.
This first special is devoted to secondary shredders for SRF/RDF plants. A simple, comprehensive and useful technical guide to the main features of the secondary shredders offered by leading national and international manufacturers.
This guide is divided into two parts. The first presents a table with data so that the technical features of the secondary shredders offered by the main national and international manufacturers can be examined and compared at a glance.
As the perfect complement to the comparative table, which shows the main technical features to facilitate comparison of the different models on the market, we have designed attractive fact sheets in which the leading manufacturers describe their secondary shredder ranges, distinguishing features and advantages over other equipment on the market.
A guide particularly aimed at engineers, developers of turnkey RDF plants, national, provincial and regional public authorities, and ultimately all organisations involved in waste management and recovery.

The Lindner Komet range of powerful heavy-duty single shaft shredders is the market leader for SRF/RDF production.
The Komet range utilizes the Lindner intelligent modular design system, making it flexible, adaptable and robust. It has satisfied customers all over the World as being reliable, durable, operator and maintenance friendly.
Lindner’s energy-saving operation and intelligent adjustable con-trol systems secure high availability whilst guaranteeing optimal output yield and providing low shredding cost per ton. The Komet comes in three technologies, the Komet, the Power Komet and the Komet HP, and in rotor sizes of 1100, 1800, 2200 and 2800.
The Lindner Komet range are utilized for effective shredding/gra-nulation with a regulated feed of various pre-shredded materials without un-shreddable content. The Lindner Komet can be indivi-dually configured and optimally fitted for its application. All models include hydraulic pusher and safety clutch for protection of machi-ne components.
Glass reinforced plastic drive guards on the machine not only en-hance its appearance but contribute to increased security, a reduc-tion in operational noise and provide quick and easy access to the drive unit.
The Power Komet is appealing because of its peak economic and eco-logical performance. The essential distinction of the Power Komet compared to the Komet is that it is fitted with an additional energy-saving pre-drive that saves up to 20% of energy cost (the Power Ko-met features belt pulleys with a high rotary speed, these build up the centrifugal force which enables the machine to use less energy). In combination with the shredding system developed by Lindner, a total energy reduction of 50% compared to our competitors can be shown. Other machines on the market that have a lower centrifugal force use more electricity to generate the power they need.
The Komet HP is the newest addition to the range, HP standing for High Performance. With this machine throughputs can be increased by as much as 25% making it the most productive secondary shredder on the market today. Fresh redesigned cutting geometry and drive system have allowed Lindner to construct a machine that is not only optimized for high performance but can also be adjusted to reduce internal damage if foreign parts are introduced to the machine.

trituradores secundarios
mayores cargas de trabajo, elevados picos de corriente, esfuerzos y vibraciones generados durante la trituración de los desechos más resistentes;
• Acoplamiento a cadena para conectar el rotor a la transmisión en baño de aceite para una lubricación constante que evita roturas y reduce el ruido;
• Cierre y apertura del tamiz con un sistema hidráulico que garantiza una mayor seguridad y la velocidad de acceso, reduciendo así el tiem-po de inactividad de la máquina para el mantenimiento o abertura para limpieza del rotor de materiales no adecuados para la trituración;
• Placas de corte sobre los discos de contención del rotor. Permiten la limpieza de los lados del rotor, evitan el desgaste de los lados debido a la obstrucción del material, también facilitando el proceso de corte;
• Contra-cuchillas a placas intercambiables. Pueden ser rotadas 4 ve-ces reduciendo significativamente los costos de mano de obra y el tiempo de inactividad de la máquina gracias a la extrema facilidad de reemplazo;

Granuladores SPR
SPR Granulators
SPR Heavy Load granulators are the result of extensive experience in the design and installation of recycling plants, and the knowhow acquired in the manufacture and maintenance of shredding machines. The granulator operates by means of a shaft with rotor blades that rotate at high speed against counter blades arranged at a distance of 0.1 mm. These counter blades are fixed to the stator, which is designed to tilt and automatically adjust (mechanical-hydraulic mechanism) towards the rotor blades to ensure optimum cutting efficiency. Each stator has two sets of blades, some of which are in contact with the input material and others which are not. This system facilitates blade replacement and increases machine uptime.
Main applications
• End-of-life tyres, even those with steel tyre reinforcement cord.• Refrigerators.• WEEE.• Electrical wires.• SRFs from medium or high-density materials.
Heavy Load machines are designed for the preparation of SRFs where there is a high risk of inappropriate, dense or solid materials. The automatic adjustment of the blades on the stator and their floating arrangement provides the blades with good protection and enables them to be quickly adjusted, resulting in high machine uptime. SPR granulators can be equipped with a single stator or two stators to increase cutting capacity.
Blades
Rotor and stator blades are identical and can therefore be used interchangeably for either the rotor or the stator. Moreover, the blades have four cutting edges to optimise cutting potential. Main benefits:
• Quick and easy blade adjustment.• Stator rotation to facilitate blade adjustment and replacement.• Clutch to protect against foreign bodies.• Homogeneous performance due to rapid adjustment.• Standardised blades with four applications.• Unsoldered blade holder to enable easy replacement.

VAZ.
VAZ. Unlimited productivity
The new patents and technological applications incorporated into Vecoplan’s VAZ range of shredders offer truly satisfactory results. The range of RDF shredders is born of a very specific, innovative concept: a solid steel rotor of 640 mm in diameter with 4 or 6 rows of knives arranged in V shape. A tried and tested design to achieve extremely homogenous shredding and refinement of heterogeneous materials. These shredders feature two adjustable counter knives that provide two cuts per rotation to increase productivity with less wear and give greater processing capacity. The hydraulic ram feeds the material perpendicularly against the rotor shaft, thereby accelerating the shredding process. The shredders can incorporate a second feed ram (bridge breaker) to push the material against the rotor when working with bulky, low-density materials. A pneumatic swing-up screen enables full access to the rotor from the outside, thereby facilitating maintenance. When the material to be processed contains large quantities of inappropriate materials, the shredder components, particularly those directly involved in the cutting process, must comply with stringent anti-wear requisites. Vecoplan has made significant investment in a proprietary laboratory, where different materials and tools are tested, and innovative solutions, special alloys and geometries are developed.
Optimized protection against tramp material: a system designed to prevent damage to the machine caused by inappropriate feed-in material, and provide a solution to clogging. It consists of a set of highly resistant pneumatic air springs that support the counter knife. On sudden impact with tramp material, the system cushions the blow and if the impact is very heavy or clogging occurs, the machine shuts down in order to avoid damage. The pneumatic pressure on the “flipper” is immediately switched off to enable separation of the rotor and the counter knife, thus allowing the manual removal of the tramp material. Pressure is once again restored and operation resumes. This quick and simple process takes just a few seconds.
Hi-Torc drive unit: patented direct drive motor with excellent control, high-density power and variable frequency drive. The motor generates high maximum torques (100 to 150,000 Nm) at all operating speeds and is suitable for operation in the most demanding production conditions with minimal electricity consumption (up to 30% lower than standard engines). Thanks to its annular shape and airtight design, it is extremely compact and robust, and can operate without risk in extremely dusty and dirty environments. It offers long-life, maintenance-free operation.

trituradores secundarios
Triturador secundario TR para Waste to Energy/CDR
TR secondary shredder for Waste to Energy/RDF
The TR shredder series is without doubt the most renowned post shredder on the market. It is the first machine of its kind for the processing RDF and SRF. Used to refine the pre-shredded MSW and C&I waste fraction, this secondary shredder is designed to produce fuel that can be used in power stations and cement kilns in place of fossil fuels.
Having involved clients in the design and development, the TR shredder boasts technological excellence that not only satisfies WtE industry requirements but actually exceeds efficiency expectations time and time again, enabling clients to to adopt the “Lean Manufacturing” approach to the production of alternative fuel. With UNTHA equipment, clients benefit from a quick-change cutting system, increased uptime, high reliability, automatic foreign object detection, easy machine access and therefore simplicity of maintenance, an energy-saving drive system, cost and time savings to ensure the greatest return on investment in the marketplace, and compliance with environmental obligations.
Typically secondary shredders at WtE plants require a minimum of 8 hours to change a full cutter system. But with the TR, instead of 4 bolts holding two cutter plates to the rotor, the quick-change system has only one bolt for every two plates, making it four times faster.
This high-performance single shaft shredding technology has taken the Waste to Energy sector by storm. But the UNTHA TR shredder is about much more than just throughput – it achieves unmatched precision too. SRF producers need to guarantee a refined and homogenous particle size, even more-so than RDF manufacturers who in comparison tend to require a rougher shred with a less specific fraction requirement. The waste processing systems and technologies that these companies invest in therefore need to be tried and tested, to instil confidence that the stringent requirements of their end users will be met.
With the UNTHA TR, clients have utmost peace of mind that the machine specification has been developed to satisfy the needs of the industry.
