September 18, 19, and 20 will find all the action for southwestern Vermont down at the Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal. The Flea Market kicks off the event on Friday, September 18, with the show vehicles coming Saturday and Sunday. There will be a food tent, hospitality tent, field events on Saturday afternoon for show vehicles, and judging on Sunday. This is a big fundraising source for Bennington Rotary, Norshaft Lions Club, AAUW, Viet Nam Vets, Dollars for Scholars and the Chamber of Commerce.

Much of the community scholarship money is raised through the Bennington Car Show.

In addition to the Car Show, the Better Bennington Corporation will be sponsoring a Cruise-In and Sock Hop on Saturday, September 19, in downtown Bennington. Join the fun, and come to the Car Show. Tractor pulls, hot air balloon rides — weather permitting, and fun for the whole family. Admission is $5 on Friday, $8 on Saturday and $8 on Sunday. This Car Show has been held two weeks after Labor Day weekend every year for the past 42 years. See you there!!!

Service NotesAir Force Airman

1st Class Patrick J. Thompson II gradu-ated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military dis-cipline and studies, Air Force core values, physi-cal fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Thompson earned distinction as an honor graduate.He is the son of Kathie Thompson of Bentley Lane, Arlington,

Vermont.The airman graduated in 2006 from Arlington High School, and

received an associate degree in 2008 from Vermont Technical College, Randolph, Vermont.

Army Reserve Spec. Eric M. Cleverly has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Oklahoma.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weap-ons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.

Cleverly graduated in 2001 from Brattleboro Union High School, Brattleboro, Vermont, and received a bachelor’s degree in 2005 from Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston, Massachusetts.

Freihofer’s Bakery Outlet located at 1450 East Street in Pittsfield. I was greeted by store supervisor Sherry Sweetser who shared with me the fact that the store will celebrate its third anniversary on October 2.

“We are not day-old products. We sell over-bakes, overstocks, and returns from driver routes,” Sherry informed me. The outlet offers Entenmann’s, Freihofer’s, Arnold, Boboli, Lender’s and Thomas’ products. For snack choices there are cookies, cakes, pies, Danish, donuts, Fritos, chips, nuts, beef sticks, and fruit snacks.

In the bread section there are light breads, whole grains, multi-grains, wheat, and white. For rolls there is everything from dinner to hot dog and hamburg and grinder. Besides all the great choices of snacks and breads, you can pick up milk and juice at very reasonable prices.

Why Freihofer’s is so unique is that it is a cozy, hidden gem that is not a Mom and Pop, but it is also not a Big Box. The ladies behind the counter (Paula Segala, Kim Forgette, and Sherry Sweetser) each have unique personalities and an abundance of smiles for their customers, and offer out-standing customer service. “We

also always have cookies for our 4-legged friends,” Sherry said.

When asked where the idea for the squirrels in their ads came from, Sherry said that she always thought of squirrels as thrifty as they store for later use. Celia saves a lot and her grand-mother Penny Pincher have been in many ads over the years. The outlet is open Monday-Friday, 9

Artist ReceptionAn artist reception will be held at the 15 John Sreet Gallery, Hoosick

Falls, on September 18 and 19. Featured artist will be Martin “Marty” Walter, a native of Western New York who has lived in the Cambridge area since 1973. His art studies were at Rockland Community College and Rosary Hill College (now Daemen College) under the late Buffalo artist Warren Long. He is a member of the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council and has participated in their member shows.

Marty, along with other exhibitors (we display over 25+), will be on hand at the gallery from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, and noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The gallery will open at 10 a.m. Coffee and refreshments will be served.

The body of Marty’s work is var-ied. He has traveled extensively through-out Eastern New York and Western New England where he has had the opportunity to observe local land-scapes in all their differing seasons. These landscapes figure in his work as well as urban street scenes and whimsical drawings. Deserted buildings and old machinery facinate him. Their air of desolation does not detract from their dignity and he tries to show both of these qualities in his work.

While he loves the use of color, some works just seem to call for the stark contrast of black and white. Many of the works employ mixed media combinations of acrylic, watercolor, and marker, giving the effect of depth and texture to the flat surface.

Bennington QuiltfestThe 16th annual Quilt Show will be held on September 19 and 20,

at the Mount Anthony Union High School, Park Street, Bennington, Vermont. You will see over 200 new and antique quilts, with featured quilter and lecturer, Gwyned Trefethen. There is still time to enter the three major competitions being held at the First Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza, set for the weekend of September 26, in the Village of Hoosick Falls. This family-friendly community event is a pride and tradition initiative organized by the Hoosick Area Partnership for Parents & Youth (HAPPY).

Redeemer Lutheran Church to Donate All Proceeds of German Dinner

Redeemer Lutheran Church will be hosting their annual Fall German Dinner on Saturday, October 3 at the larger, more convenient Elks Lodge on Washington Avenue in downtown Bennington, Vermont. The proceeds from the German Dinner will be entirely donated to the Emergency Food and Fuel Fund of Bennington County. The cost of the buffet-style dinner is $14 for adults, $6 for children under 12, and this year Redeemer will be offering take-out for $10 per container.

Local Authors Present New Fiction and Poetry

On Thursday, September 17, at 7 p.m., nine local authors will pres-ent “Sweating Ink,” a program of new fiction and poetry at the J.G. McCullough Free Library in North Bennington.

The theme is used to illustrate both the process of writing and, as you will hear, ink that sweats from pens and pores used literally within the narratives. Highlights will include: Taisha Marks reading three poems beginning with “The Rastaman’s Lament,” a political rant delivered in her native Jamaican accent. Poet Kerin Sulock will read several new lyri-cal pieces set in the local landscape. “The Bear’s Apology,” by Brandon Ayre, is a humorous tale about a bear who writes like Dickens and rolls his own cigarettes. Shawn MacKenzie spins “When Yeti Crabs Dance,” an other-worldly tale of hunting legends, getting lost, and finding one-self along the way. “Play Time” by Eric Devine is the account of a teen-age boy who accidentally kills his best friend while playing a high-risk game. John Goodrich’s “Sweating Ink” follows Jimmy the Squid’s escape from a chain gang and subsequent flight across a Southern landscape. In a piece about music, Stefano Donati reads his heartfelt “Close to Home.” In Krishna Stark’s “The Life,” the narrator grapples with the unpredict-ability of her character. “Ghost Gum Trees” by Marie White Small fea-tures a quirky American aunt who visits her charming nine-year-old nephew in Australia. All of the authors are members of Southshire Roundtable, a Bennington writers’ critique group.

The Barnett Homestead at the Bennington Battlefield New York State Historic Site will celebrate the beginning of the autumn sea-son with a Fall Harvest Frolick on Sunday, September 20, from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. The event will feature a number of family-ori-ented activities and demonstra-tions, including tours of the Homestead.

Fred Depaul, who has pre-sented sheep-shearing annually in May at the Homestead, will return with an authentic antique “fanning mill”, which separates grain and chaff, and other farm-ing implements. Visitors can participate in his demonstrations

Fall Harvest Frolic at the Barnett Homesteadand enjoy his lively commen-tary on early farm life. Children may make a hand-dipped candle for free, or participate in craft mini-workshops for a nominal fee to cover expenses. Games and music will also be featured among the day’s activities.

Area cooks will have an oppor-tunity to showcase their skills in an Apple Pie Baking Contest, submitting entries to be judged by a panel of pie connoiseurs. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third places. Those wishing to participate can pick up an entry form at the Town of Hoosick offices on Church Street, or by calling 518-686-4438.

Admission is $5 per person, $15 per family (limit 6 per fam-ily; additional family members $3 each) and includes tours of the Homestead and free candle dipping for kids. The mini-workshops for kids — seasonal

felt banners or tin-punch — are appropriate for ages 7 and older, and the fee is $3 each, or two for $5. The Friends of the Bennington Battlefield will sell refreshments.

The Barnett Homestead is located off Route 67 in Walloomsac, New York, on Caretakers Road, just opposite the main entrance to the Park. The Homestead, which serves as the Visitors’ Center for the Bennington Battlefield, is an early 19th century home situated where the main engagement of the Battle took place in 1777. It is co-managed by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation and the Town of Hoosick.

The Fall Harvest Frolick at the Barnett Homestead will feature several living history demonstra-tions.

...37 years...For the first time in 37 years, I don’t

have to get up and let a dog out in the morning. I’m devastated by the loss of my Cleo. She took up so much space in the house and in my heart.

I took several days off this past week just to get some perspective in order to go on. I’ve done some cleaning, and have been working on the weekly papers from my desk in the den. The pain of her loss is slowly being replaced with joyful memories.

And my memories are stretching far back this morning. The sound of the washer and dryer in the background as I wash kitchen throw rugs has taken my memory and senses back to mornings before my children were in school, running around in their pajamas with our golden retriever, Chris, chasing after them. I can still hear the giggles and barking.

Cleo was a chatterbox; always talking. She was a husky/lab/shepherd mix. She wasn’t too shy to interrupt a conversation if she felt she wasn’t being paid enough attention. Every time I came home from work, the store, the neighbor’s house, or just came in from the back yard, I was greeted with a wooo...wowwooo...wooowwwoooo. I’ll forever miss her speak.

She loved tomatoes. I was barbecuing hamburgers one afternoon, and slicing a large red tomato when the phone rang. In just the time it took me to walk around the kitchen corner into the den and pick up the phone, she quickly, and deftly, snatched that big tomato from the sink

Spend and Evening with General Burgoyne

On Friday, September 18 the Friends of the Bennington Battle Monument invite you to spend an evening with Major General John Burgoyne.

Come hear Burgoyne as he gives a humorous, rueful and accurate account of “what went wrong” in 1777. Burgoyne was sent to put an end to the rebellion in the colonies and secure the Lake Champlain and Hudson River corridor for England.

His loss at the Battle of Bennington in August led to his ultimate defeat and surrender at Saratoga, the turning point in the American Revolution.

“Gentleman Johnny” Burgoyne is portrayed by Howard Burnham, and English-born actor, author, educator and museum curator, touring the area on a journey to Saratoga and Fort Ticonderoga.

Howard's acclaimed one-man shows have played throughout England and have been on the BBC. His fully costumed dramatic monologues/lectures-in-character with Power Point last approximately 45-50 minutes. This is history with humor, a progam that can be enjoyed by all ages.

The presentation, sponsored by the friends of the monument, will take place on September 18th at 7:30 p.m. in the Old First Church barn on Monument Circle. It’s free and open to the public, light refreshments will be served.

top and wolfed it down.Cleo loved to ride in the car to see the cows, and enjoyed coming to

work with me. The first thing she did at the office was check out Jim’s wastebasket for bagel wrappers. She would lie down at the back of the hallway, giving her a full view of the front office door. If someone came in that she instinctively knew liked dogs, she would walk up and greet them, allowing them to marvel over her beautiful coat and eyes, and then saunter back to take her place.

I can’t imagine too many more mornings without the need to let a dog out. I’m going to be looking for a companion pretty quickly. I won’t find Cleo, but I’ll find another wonderful soul.

...freedom of speech and the freedom to listen...A few weeks ago I discussed the abhorrent behavior of adults at

Town Hall meetings, preventing speakers from speaking and those who were there to ask questions and listen from doing so. This past Tuesday the President of the United States was prevented from encouraging children to stay in school and be responsible citizens for themselves and their country in several southern school districts, most notably Texas and Florida.

I am outraged that parents, school superintendents and school boards would show such a stunning lack of judgment (they called it fear of indoctrination) as to prevent our President from speaking to students about good citizenship and the value of staying in school.

I’m not a fan of Howard Stern. So what do I do? Am I going to try to have him censored? No. I simply don’t listen to him. If you want to listen to him, fine. I don’t have to. If parents didn’t want their children to hear the inspirational comments by President Obama, they could keep their children home for the day. What right had they to prevent others from

hearing the President? I didn’t agree with the policies of George W. Bush, but I have respect

for the office of the President of the United States. If I had children in school and he was giving an address, that would be fine. They should have the opportunity to listen to what he has to say. Mothers and fathers must have more confidence in their children to discern what they are hearing and more confidence in themselves to parent.

What negative and fearful messages are those parents, superinten-dents and school boards sending to their children about their President of the United States and the very office of President, that he can not be seen by them in their classroom? Could this be indoctrination?

Those same people frighten me very much for they, if they could, for whatever reason, would censor this column.
