Come and meet bestselling author Jonathan Mahler, as he discusses his legal thriller “The Challenge: Hamdan v. Rumsfeld and the Fight Over Presidential Power” at a special fundraiser for the Bennington Free Library.

Mahler, a contributing writ-er for The New York Times Magazine, is also the author of the best-selling book “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx Is Burning,” a 2004 New York Times Notable Book that was adapted as an eight-part dramatic mini-series for ESPN starring John Turturro.

The Challenge tells the inside story of an incredible mismatch: the maverick lawyers for one accused enemy combatant ver-sus all the legal resources of the U.S. government. At its center are Charles Swift and Neal Katyal,

a young navy lawyer and a law professor who, soon after 9/11, decide to sue the President of the United States on behalf of an accused Yemeni terrorist. The entire system was stacked against them, and even Swift’s superiors urged him to plead guilty. But in the spring of 2006, the case made it to the Supreme Court and won. The landmark ruling has been called the court’s most impor-tant decision ever on presidential power and the rule of law.

CCV Celebrates National Community College Month With Sit-In

The Community College of Vermont invites the community to join the Sit-In and see learning in action from April 5-10 in celebration of National Community College month. Interested individuals are invited to attend one of the more than 50 courses offered this spring for a first-hand view of an active learning environment. Morning, afternoon, and evening courses are available on a range of subjects including com-parative religion, world music, digital image manipulation, principles of marketing, forensics and crime scene investigation and many more.

National Community College month celebrates the more than seven million Americans currently enrolled in credit-bearing courses at com-munity colleges nationwide. In Vermont, over 10,000 students attend classes at the Community College of Vermont each year. CCV offers 17 Associate Degree programs and 11 Certificate programs in areas as diverse as Graphic Design, Criminal Justice, Education, and Massage Therapy.

From my Corner— by Susan J. Coons ...a wonderful memory...March 23 was what would have

been our 43rd anniversary. It was a melancholy day for me. My husband passed away over eleven years ago. I can’t believe how fast these years have gone by. My son asked me if I had planned anything special like a toast, or rose on the stone at the cemetery, and I said, “no.” After all, it’s just a memory now. Almost 32 years of wonderful memories.

Meeting him was something that was meant to be...a string of deci-sions and coincidental events that led to our meeting. I knew when I first saw him that we were special. It was fate.

We had a wonderful life and love together. We traveled; had the pleasure of giving life to two wonderful children who became beautiful, giving, intelligent adults; we were together through thick and thin; hard times and high-on-the-hog times; his depression and final illness. Very difficult to talk about, really.

But I can still see him, when I turn over onto my right side in bed. I see his curly hair at the nape of his neck. I would twirl his curls in my fingers while wrapping my left arm around him. Sometime during the night we would turn over and every morning I awoke with his arm around me. Every morning.

Most couples have interesting stories about their first meeting. I’ll share mine with you one of these days. Fate and humor played a big role in our relationship. He was a larger-than-life kind of guy.

WBTN Begins 2010 Red Sox Coverage with Spring Training Games

WBTN recently signed a 5-year agreement to be the exclusive broad-caster of the Boston Red Sox in southwestern Vermont.

WBTN will broadcast 12 spring training games and then begins the regular season with a Sunday night home game against the New York Yankees, April 4 with first pitch at 7 p.m.

During the baseball season, Red Sox coverage will force movement of locally produced and syndicated programs in the WBTN weekday evening and weekend schedule. Please check the schedule on www.wbtnam.org for new schedule times.

Youth Center Campers Take Center Stage with ‘Stone Soup’

During February vacation, twenty children participated in a camp on performing arts at the Youth Center. Participants created stage design dioramas, made puppets and wrote puppet skits, learned about costumes and props, and staged an adorable production of “Stone Soup” for family and friends. The camp is one of the many enrichment programs offered by the Hoosick Area Youth Center and Community Coalition.

A second school vacation camp is being planned for Spring Break (April 5-9, 2010). “Ka-Ching for Kids” will focus on responsible spend-ing, creating and marketing products, saving and the value of money, and sharing your profits with others. On Friday, April 2, Club Muse, located on the second floor at the Bennington Museum will host a 90s Dance Party, and it is going to be “The Bomb.” Bring a date, join your friends, because like all Club Muse dance parties, it is “slammin.” Club Muse is open from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. $5 cover at the door.

The 1990s saw the rise of alternative rock groups such as Alice in Chains, Red Hot Chili Peppers, R.E.M., and Counting Crows, while groups like Nirvana mixed alternative rock and grunge producing a sound that was popular throughout the decade. Of course, there was Green Day, Blink-182 and Third Eye Blind all carrying it on into the new millennium. Family Time Receives Stewart’s Foundation GrantProject Against Violent Encounters is pleased to announce that

they have received $500 from the Stewart’s Holiday Match program. In keeping with the intent of the grant to fund programming for chil-dren 18 years and under, PAVE will continue to provide two children’s education programs, Hands are Not for Hitting based in local pre-kin-dergartens and Come Draw with Me in the elementary schools. These programs are designed to reach young people ages 3-8 who have dif-ficulty expressing their emotions and relating to others appropriately, and help them express their emotions in a safe and non-violent manner. Between the two programs, PAVE hopes to serve over 200 children in our local area.

Stewart’s credits the success of the Holiday Match program to their customers’ generous contributions, the dedicated shop partners who collected the funds and their media partners that helped spread the word. PAVE would like to thank all those involved because without this type of community support many essential programs would go unfunded and therefore would not occur.

American Legion Post #40 CelebrationEach year the American Legion Post 40 and The Auxillary Unit 40 of

Hoosick Falls get together and celebrate their anniversaries. This time the men are celebrating their 91st year and the Ladies their 78th year. Through the years we have supported our veterans and our community with all the programs we have to offer.

We do everything from the Memorial Day parade to our open house at Veterans Day. 2010 Christian Action Award Nominations

The Hoosick Area Church Association is now accepting nomina-tions for an award for a deserving senior graduating from Hoosick Falls Central School, who has exhibited significant Christian attributes and service. The award consists of a monetary award and a certificate recognizing the student.

First Clue: This year’s “Season of Mystery” begins with Mystery Book Seminars on specific Sunday afternoons at the Bennington Free Library at 2 p.m. The free presentations will be presented by Sally Sugarman. First in the series is “The Leavenworth Case” written by Anna Katharine Green, to be held on Sunday, April 11. The author, daughter of a lawyer, was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1846. Green, who had 40 books published, was a poet and early writer of detective fiction who found success in a male-dominated genre of story-telling.

20th Annual Family Fair in Honor of Month of the Young ChildThe Bennington County Child Care Association would like to

announce that they are having their 20th annual Family Fair in honor of the Month of the Young Child.

The Family Fair will be held on Saturday, April 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Bennington Elementary School. Admission is free as well as all activities and entertainment! Some of the activities include face painting, spin art, rescue vehicles and many, many, more! Free entertainment includes the Whirling Twirlers, Beth Bidwell’s Wild Things and the Berkshire Dance Theatre.

USSA National Alpine TeamJessie Kuzmicki, age 12, from Pownal, Vermont, was recently named

to the USSA National Alpine team after six qualifying runs at the Junior Alpine Junior Olympics hosted by Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. Miss Kuzmicki became one of only 30 elite eastern USA female athletes who qualified for the Can-Am Games being held at Sugarloaf with its best 30 female and 30 male athletes to compete in this event.

Jessie is a seventh grade student at Sacred Heart St. Frances de Sales School in Bennington, Vermont. School Principal David Estes and the teaching staff at SHS have been very supportive in helping Jessie main-tain her 4.0 grade point average while pursuing her athletic goals.

Project Graduation Spaghetti Dinner and Auction

The Arlington Memorial High School Senior Class will host a spa-ghetti dinner, Friday, April 9, from 6-8 p.m. in the Mack Multi-Purpose Room at Fisher Elementary School. Community members are wel-come to attend. The cost is $20 per family, $8 per adult, $5 per child and no charge for children under 3. Guests can also try their luck with a 50/50 raffle and Chinese Auction while they enjoy dinner. Proceeds will benefit Project Graduation, a national program that promotes safe celebrations throughout the high school graduation season.

Michelle Kwan, the most decorated figure skater in U.S. history (five World Championships, nine U.S. National titles, two Olympic medals), who is also an author and U.S. diplomatic envoy, will add doctor to her already impressive resume, when she receives an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at Southern Vermont College’s 83rd Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 8.

Kwan, a California native, will also address the graduating class as its commencement speaker. Named the nation’s first Public Diplomacy Envoy for the U.S. State Department in 2006, Kwan travels widely to speak with youth across the globe about America, its culture and values,

and the life lessons learned through sports. She is currently a graduate student at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of International Affairs.

For more than a decade, Kwan dominated the figure skating world, winning a record 43 titles. In the nearly 100-year history of U.S. fig-ure skating, no American man or woman has won more world titles, national titles or Olympic medals. The author of two books, “Michelle Kwan: Heart of a Champion” (1997) and “The Winning Attitude!” (1999), Kwan’s undergraduate education and degree at the University of Denver (2008) focused on international studies, a topic she continues in her graduate work. In her current role as a Public Diplomacy Envoy, she travels throughout the world to meet and speak with young people about leadership and to engage them in dialogue on social and educa-tional issues.

“I am honored to be invited to attend and participate in Commencement Exercises at Southern Vermont College,” said Kwan. “Education has and always will be a very important part of my life. I look forward to speaking to the graduating class, sharing some of my life experiences with them and congratulating them for their own aca-demic accomplishments and success.”

“I am delighted that Michelle will address our graduates and receive an Honorary Degree,” said SVC President Karen Gross. “She is the embodiment of someone who has worked hard to pursue a dream, someone who is not afraid to fall down, get back up, and strive for excellence at each and every turn. From Sheep to FloorMrs. Merwin’s seventh grade class has been hard at work on their

class project to be put up for bid at St. Mary’s (Hoosick Falls, New York) Annual Spring Auction. The students are starting from sheared wool from a local Shetland sheep to create a hand braided rug.

Cheyenne is 2 years old, she showed up at someone’s house and they brought her to SCAC to find a home. Cheyenne is very timid and panicky with new situations. It may take her a while to open up, but when she does she is awfully gentle and loves getting attention. She also likes to talk to you when sees you. Please come see our coy girl.

Babette is a 2 year old, female Old English Bulldog. She and her brother, Bentley, were purchased from a breeder as 8 week old puppies and were returned to that breeder because of serious medical conditions in the adop-tive home. The breeder, however, was not able to keep the pair because they did not fit into her

established pack. A sweet and mellow girl, Babette is affectionate, friendly and extremely loving. She can be playful, but is more of a couch potato. Babs has completed two basic obedience classes. Leash manners however, need some work. Continued socialization with people and extensive socialization with other dogs will be extremely beneficial for Babette. If you are looking for a beautiful and lazy lady, then come and meet our Babette!

Miksa is a two year old, female Jack Russell Terrier who came to Second Chance because she did not get along with the other dominant female dog in her fos-ter home. Miksa’s original owner worked many hours per day and she ended up being crated for twenty-two of those hours! A sweet, bold and sensitive girl,

Miksa loves human companionship and would do well with lots of activity, exercise and play! Reinforcement of basic obedience and recall training will be necessary. The Jack Russell Terrier is typically a very hyper, intelligent and brave breed. Miksa is just this type and also very quick-witted, intelligent and affectionate. She prefers to sleep in the bed and would make a good cuddle companion. We recommend a home with children thirteen years and older. Other dogs may be possible upon introduction, although dominant females and cats are unlikely. If you are looking for a little whirlwind to love and train, then come and meet our baby-girl, Miksa!

Stitching for Shelter Animals Throughout the month of

April, Yarns for Your Soul will be collecting small blankets called “Snuggles” as part of our char-ity knitting campaign “Knit for Your Soul and Theirs.” These snuggles will be made in sup-port of the Hugs for Homeless Animals organization and sent to the Second Chance Animal Shelter in Shaftsbury, Vermont. Snuggles provide a soft lining for their cages, while animals are awaiting adoption.

Snuggles must be made from machine washable fibers. Please visit the shop for recommended yarns. Upon completion of this month’s project, volunteers will receive a coupon for ten percent off of a future purchase. Yarns for Your Soul is located at 605 Depot Street in Manchester Center.

Fish Fry Friday Challenge is Met! St. Mary’s Academy parent and head fish fry chef, Jerry McAuliffe

challenged the students and families to help the school sell 150 fish fry dinners last Friday. That goal was exceeded so Mr. McAuliffe made good on his promise to shave his head and beard!

Spring into Action– Sarah D Hammond

Finally! The sun is shining; the weather is warm and the snow has started to melt. With this comes a bustle for spring sports. For some of us, it’s golf or hiking. Perhaps it’s baseball or tennis. Either way, we have to get out of hibernation and get moving!

Not so fast! What some of us don’t understand is the prepara-

tion our bodies need in order to play a sport. For some of us, we hit the ground running- literally. The rest of us need to ease into action. Here is a simple three part approach to making sure we treat our bodies’ right this spring.

First, warm up! A large misconception is that we need a fancy mem-bership in order to become fit. Getting ready to play spring sports can be as easy as 20 jumping jacks and 10 minutes of stretching. A consistent

warm up routine is essential in the fulfillment of the course or court, but also, the second portion of the three steps. Regardless of what we choose to believe, we all need a consistent regimen of fitness. Our bodies need to be moved at least 3 times a week. Not only does this increase oxygen and blood flow but flexibility, and it’s great for your body’s preparation to withstand the pressure of spring sports. So, secondly; become consis-tent with your fitness.

The last part of the three steps is learning to listen to what your body is telling you. Your muscles ache after these cold months and you may feel sluggish. Your body is telling you to get moving! Once you start to become active again this spring, the movement of the muscles and the oxygen flow to your brain will energize and motivate you. Your body asks for what it needs, so always listen while you move! Spring into action, and don’t forget your water!
