Several hundred residents of local communities from Cambridge, New York through to New Hampshire turned out to pay their final respects to Marine Corporal Philip Charte, who grew up in Cambridge. Charte, 22, later of Goffstown, New Hampshire, was killed on Tuesday, September 7, dur-ing combat operations in Afghanistan.

The family held a pri-vate service at the New Skete Monastery, Cambridge, New York, on Thursday, September 16, and then traveled through Bennington on the way to Boscawen, New Hampshire for burial.

Bennington Cloggers Still Recruiting Students

The Wild Country Cloggers are pleased to announce that they have extended their deadline for new class registration to October 3.

Beginner-one clogging classes are available on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

The Cloggers are also offering a tiny tot class for children ages two to six years old made up of a mixture of clogging, jazz, and creative movement. There is a slight tuition fee.

Lessons are held weekly at the Cloggers’ private studio on Chapel Road and spare shoes are available on site.

Still Time to Enter - Runners, Chunkers and Cooks Still Wanted

There is still time to enter the three major competitions being held during the Second Annual Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza, set for the week-end of September 24-26, in the Village of Hoosick Falls. This family-friendly community event is a pride and tradition initiative organized by the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3).

Registration is still open for the Punkin’ Chunkin’ event, the Chili Cook-off, and the Pumpkinpalooza 5K Run/Walk. All three events take place on Saturday, September 25.

Graduate School Fair Comes to Southern Vermont College

Southern Vermont College will host a Graduate School Fair on Tuesday, September 28, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the Everett Mansion on campus. Representatives from more than 15 graduate and professional schools will attend. The public is invited to this event.

Pumpkins Popping Up All Over Hoosick

In preparation for the 2nd Annual Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza, set for September 24-26, pumpkins were painted in storefront windows along the main streets in Hoosick Falls last week. Pumpkin flags are also flying along Main Street and signs are being placed in the outskirts of the town announcing this community cel-

Credential AwardedKeya Hunt and Jennifer Beaudoin of Country Corner Daycare have

been awarded a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential in rec-ognition of outstanding work with young children. The credential was awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition in Washington, DC, which represents the early childhood education profession.

CDA is the only major national effort to improve early childhood education and care by evaluation and recognition of the skills of those individuals providing care. The first credential was awarded 30 years ago, and now 49 states plus the District of Columbia include CDA in their childcare licensing regulations.

The CDA Credential impact is evident in center-based and home visitor programs as well as family child care, the most common form of care for children under 5 years of age.

Hoosick Falls Derby Club Remembers Veterans

The Hoosick Falls Derby Club has once again shown its generosity by donating $500 to the Veterans Memorial Wall to be constructed in the Village Park in the Village of Hoosick Falls.

The Derby Club, started in the 1930s, has a long-standing tradition of community involvement. At its October meeting, several new members are slated for induction. If you would like to join the Derby Club, or for more information, please contact President Joanie James, Treasurer Kevin Whalen, or Secretary Jane Clark.

Veterans Memorial Wall Committee spokesperson Marilyn Douglas said the Committee is so appreciative of the positive response their fundraising efforts have received by civic groups such as the Derby Club, and past and present individuals in the community. The fund-raising still continues with the goal of $45,000 to be raised by Veterans Day, November 11, 2010, with the dedication of the wall planned for Veterans Day, November 11, 2011. Donations of $500 will be recog-nized on a special plaque at the Wall. All donations are tax deductible, and whatever your gift, it is appreciated. Mystery Author Archer Mayor to Speak at LibraryMystery fans have a treat in

store when Archer Mayor, author of the highly acclaimed, Vermont-based mystery series featuring detective Joe Gunther, appears at the Bennington Free Library, 101 Silver Street in Bennington. Mayor will be reading from and autographing his new novel, “Red Herring,” in the library’s Rotary Room on Monday, October 4 at 7 p.m. This event is co-sponsored by The Bennington Bookshop. Copies of “Red Herring” and Mayor’s newest paperback release, “The Price of Malice” will be available for purchase at the autographing.

Archer Mayor’s Joe Gunther series has been described by the Chicago Tribune as “the best police procedurals being written in America.” Mayor is also the 2004 winner of the New England Independent Booksellers Association Award for Best Fiction — the first time a writer of crime literature has been so honored. In addition, Mayor is a death investigator for Vermont’s Chief Medical Examiner, a Deputy Sheriff for Windham County, Vermont, an investigator for the Windham County State’s Attorney’s office, the publisher of his own backlist, a travel writ-er for AAA, and he travels the Northeast giving speeches and conducting workshops. He also has 25 years experience as a vol-unteer firefighter/EMT.

Free Concert With Harpsichordist Victor Hill at the Clark

Renowned harpsichordist Victor Hill will present a solo recital at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute on Sunday, October 3 at 3:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Featured on the program are Johann Sebastian Bach’s six “French Suites,” the first five of which he composed for his wife Anna Magdalena in approximately 1720. Each suite consists of a sequence of six to eight stylized dance movements that Hill says “emphasizes Bach’s immense creativity.” German composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) was a master of the Baroque period renowned for the artistic beauty, techni-cal skill, and intellectual depth of his ecclesiastical and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments.

Hill was Professor of Mathematics at Williams College for forty years. He studied the harpsichord in Amsterdam with the noted Dutch harp-sichordist Gustav Leonhardt and has played more than 900 concerts throughout the United States and in Europe. Hill plays the double-manual harpsichord of eighteenth-century design that was custom built for him in 1997 by Richard Kingston of Asheville, North Carolina. He tunes the instrument himself in a common eighteenth-century pitch and temperament.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (daily in July and August). Admission is $15 June 1 through October 31. Admission is free for children 18 and younger, members, and students with valid ID. Admission is free November through May. Free Community DinnerThe next free Community Dinner will be held on Saturday, September

25 at First Baptist Church in Cambridge. Meals are held on the last Saturday of each month from noon to 1 p.m. with the exception of November and December. This month a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, entirely provided by Cambridge IGA and cooked by First Baptist cooks will be served. The menu includes turkey, dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, coleslaw, rolls, cranberry sauce, pie and beverages. The monthly meals are organized by First Baptist Church of Cambridge, with the assistance of ten different community churches and organizations.

Please Note: The church is now handicapped accessible.Sometimes by the end of the month funds run short and these meals

are intended to help stretch food budgets a little further, but also to pro-vide a home-cooked hot meal for those living alone or perhaps needing a little company. All are welcome.

First Baptist Church is located on West Main St. between Glens Falls National Bank and the IGA store. Reservations are not necessary. Take-outs will be available only for those unable to attend at 1:00 p.m. provided everyone has been fed. There will be no “second meal” take-outs. If there are questions, call Bev at 518-677-3327. Pinwheels for Peace Stephentown, New York Memorial Library will participate with

groups and individuals around the world, celebrating International Peace Day on September 21. The library will host dozens of pinwheels spinning on the lawn in the name of tolerance, unity and cooperation.

Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two art teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, who teach at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for their students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. The project was quickly embraced by their students and the entire school community and by millions of art teachers, teachers, parents, children and adults who desire peace in the world. The first Pinwheels for Peace were installed on September 21, 2005. Since then, the move-ment has grown from 500,000 pinwheels planted the first year, to three million pinwheels in 2009.

If you would like to make a pinwheel for peace, stop by the library for materials and instructions. Participants will be entered into a drawing to win a 2010 “Pinwheels for Peace” patch. For more information, call the library at 518-733-5750.
