“Once Upon A Mattress” takes place in a fictional medieval kingdom ruled by the talkative Queen Aggravaine. The mute King Sextimus has fallen under a curse that cannot be broken until ‘the mouse devours the hawk.’ The Queen has declared that no one in the kingdom may marry until Prince Dauntless weds. Unfortunately, no princess has ever been able to pass the Queen’s test. When Sir Harry and Lady Larken discover they are expecting a child, Sir Harry embarks on a quest to find a prin-cess suitable for Dauntless’s hand in marriage. What he brings back is the brash and unrefined Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, setting off a wildly comical chain of events. The fate of the kingdom rests in a small pea lying beneath 20 soft downy mattresses.

The musical is directed by Robert Allen, with set design by Charles Krawczyk and costumes by Missi Reynolds. Sami Benkowski is dance choreographer, and Charles Krawczyk and senior Justin Carter are serv-ing as lead builders, aided by Dwain Wilwol. Tom Revane and Lancelee Trimm are the leads on lighting design, with Paul Donohue on sound design. Junior Emily K. Wilwol is stage manager, sophomores Amber Luke and Mary Luke head the props department, and senior Simeon Youngmann is lead set painter.

A Note To Parents: This show is an extremely funny and lighthearted comedy set in a fairy tale land of knights and ladies, princes and prin-cesses. There is no improper language, no fighting, and the action and stage direction are styled much like a cartoon. There are a few adult themes, relating to a character being pregnant and a kingdom whose residents have been unable to marry for years. Kids will definitely enjoy the show. ...what’s in a name...Everything known to grow has

a name. Some things that grow are weeds, and the rest are flow-ers. Weeds don’t know that we’ve designated them as weeds, to be exterminated. They pop out of the earth and raise their buds and petals to the sun the same

as flowers.Weeds are poisoned; dug up; burned; stepped on...but they continue

to grow, oblivious to the scorn heaped upon them. I drive past a rolling field of dandelions in the spring on my way to work. The view is filled with bright yellow. It’s beautiful against a deep blue sky and purple-tinted hills in the background. I’m not going to tell those dandelions they’re weeds! I revel in their celebration of life, raising their petals to the sun in unison.

Flowers are nurtured, fed, watered regularly, and their beauty is last-ing forever in paintings, on pottery, in windows, displays, and grand gardening shows.

But all beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The flower needs the weed to make it look beautiful by comparison. Those dandelions don’t need a flower to pass on to me their breathtaking view. The most beautiful bouquet of flowers was brought to me by my son, who on his way home from school for lunch, stopped along the way and picked a handful of dandelions.

Southern Vermont College to Host Spring Blood Drive

Now that spring has finally arrived, the American Red Cross Blood Services is encouraging others to help replenish blood reserves depleted by the challenges of winter storms and illnesses. A blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, when the Red Cross visits Southern Vermont College’s Field House in Bennington. Donor hours will be from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and anyone who is at least 17 years old and weighs at least 110 lbs. may be eligible to donate.

For the month of April, all presenting donors can enter to win a pair of tickets to see the Boston Red Sox (includes overnight accommoda-tions and gas card). Blood is used for patients undergoing many surgical procedures, organ transplants, trauma and chemotherapy. For some patients, such as the victim of an automobile accident, the need for blood is sudden. For others, ongoing transfusions are needed to sustain medical treatment.

The American Red Cross holds blood drives in communities seven days a week. Please call 1-800-843-3500 or visit www.newwengland-blood.org to find a blood drive near you to donate during Red Cross month. It’s a pint of blood for you, but for another it could be a life saved.

Notecard SalesThe Stephentown Historical

Society has created notecard sets illustrating three historic build-ings of Stephentown as part of the town’s celebration of its 225th anniversary. The three designs are reproduced on quality card stock from original artwork. The Vanderbilt House watercolor was painted by Lillian Dette of Stephentown. This 1871 build-ing was a hotel and tavern serv-ing railroad customers traveling between Lebanon Springs and Bennington. It served as the meeting hall for the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department for over 45 years until its demolition in 1998. The Cranston Mansion is depicted surrounded by autumn splendor in an oil painting by Julie Cranston of Discovery Bay, California. This 17-room mansion was built around 1850 by Hiram Cranston, keeper of the New York Hotel, and was destroyed by fire in 1933. The only building still standing is the Stephentown Hotel, depicted in a pencil drawing by Richard Fiske of New Lebanon, New York. Built in the fashionable Second Empire style in the 1870s, it also served as a railroad hotel and as a tavern to this day.

The cards are sold in boxes of twelve, four of each design. The cost is $10. They are available

in Stephentown at the Heritage Center, the library, Sykes Store, and Split Ends; in Berlin at the library and Hair Care; and in New Lebanon at Angel’s Trumpet.

Individual cards are only sold at the Heritage Center and are $1 each. The Heritage Center, on Garfield Road, is open Friday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m.

Peter Rabbit Egg Hunt at SVCA Peter Rabbit Egg Hunt for children will be held at Southern

Vermont College on Saturday, April 11. The Egg Hunt, which is sponsored by the SVC Student Government Association, will begin promptly at 11 a.m. on the Everett Mansion front lawn. If the weather is uncooperative, the Egg Hunt will take place in the Field House, located on the lower campus.

Nuckles is a Ph.D. candidate at State University of New York at Albany. This program pays tribute to the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s voyage of discovery of the Hudson River.

Sunrise Celebrates 40th AnniversaryOn March 17th parents, children and staff associated with Sunrise

Family Resource Center gathered at its center on Union Street to celebrate its 40th anniversary by sharing cake and ice cream. Since its beginnings as a child care center in 1969, Sunrise has grown to provide a full range of parenting education and support services to over 1200 families annually across Bennington County.

nars offered last spring, Friends of the Sun in Manchester is hosting two seminars on the benefits, costs and mechanics of installing solar sys-tems in your home. SVC Radiologic Technology Students Tour Vermont Composites

Seniors from the Radiologic Technology degree program at Southern Vermont College toured the Vermont Composites facility in Bennington. In the quality control area, they observed a Bennett X-Ray machine, which was manufactured in the 1960s. This machine is used to x-ray the tables to find imperfections which may cause artifacts on diagnostic images. All tables must be free of defects before they are shipped to the customer. Fifth Graders Get Sobering Lesson in Alcohol Use

Monument Elementary School in Bennington held a Reach Out Now “Teach-In” on Tuesday, March 31, to educate fifth-grade students and parents about the harmful effects of underage drinking.

School Resource Officer and Bennington Police Officer, Bill Tatro, led the discussion about why and how young people can avoid alco-hol use. Monument Elementary and the Southshire Substance Abuse Coalition in collaboration with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, sponsored this event.

Local data shows by the time youth reach the eighth grade, 53 percent of adolescents have had at least one drink, and 29 percent report having drank in the past 30 days. Vermont has some of the highest underage drinking rates in the country and programs such as the Teach-In are working to reduce those rates.

After the program, presenter Bill Tatro and Ryan Simpson, Coordinator of the Southshire Substance Abuse Coalition, answered questions from the students.

Shehadi and Cestone win Equinox Tennis Tournament

The eighth annual Equinox Tennis Tournament for the benefit of Bennington County Meals on Wheels was held at the Equinox Hotel in Manchester on Saturday, March 21. Players from Vermont, Massachusetts, New York and even New Jersey participated in this doubles event. Round robin preliminaries preceded the final. The for-mat, arranged by club professional Seth Gabriel, was set up in the style of a pro-am tournament, since many of the players are active teaching professionals or their equivalent.

The facility, the “bubble” at the Equinox, was again graciously donated by co-owners Richard Ader and David Shehadi. This corporation is currently seeking state approval for a similar, but improved, facility in Bennington, with plans to encourage increased youth participation in

tennis. Following two hours of competition, slots in the final were won by

the teams of Dave Shehadi/Ken Cestone and Mark Kevorkian/Peter Woods. After three sets, two hours and multiple changes of lead Shehadi (Dorset) and Cestone (Bennington) finally pulled out the win at 6-2 in the third set.

Through the generosity of Bennington County sponsors. more than $4000 was raised to help offset the shortfall in state and federal fund-ing, putting us a step closer to keeping our senior population healthy and independent. “Something Unforeseen” Paintings by Scott J. Morgan

Now through May 2, selected works created by Scott J. Morgan are on view in the Regional Artist Gallery at the Bennington Museum.

This exhibit includes past work created in Morgan’s Seattle studio, as well as new works created in Vermont, his new home. The purpose of this physical and artistic journey has yet to become clear and in focus for the artist. The large featured piece titled “Something Unforeseen” is the inspiration for the exhibit and show title.

For the past 29 years, Morgan has been combining his skills as art-ist and designer on canvas and in the landscape. His paintings evolve through an intuitive approach that requires a dynamic medium. Oil paint provides the flexibility to allow Morgan to move through many scenarios and dialogues with the paint. His experiences as a profes-sional musician are evident in the rhythm and movement in his paint-ings, and the structural and sculptural qualities seen in his work are informed by his extensive career as a landscape architect.

Viewers of the artist’s work often comment on the lyrical, narrative quality of the pieces. They are crafted in the tradition of short stories, passages of improvisational music and poetry. Movement and rhythm, line, form and color are the tools that provide links to the evolving story line. These ‘stories’ or ‘songs’ unfold as an abstract translation of Morgan’s inspiration and perspective. The works are designed to provide the viewer with powerful, dynamic forms that are intriguing, stimulating, and accessible.

Originally from New York, Morgan lived in Florida for 25 years before moving to Seattle, WA. After 20 years in the northwest he recently relocated to rural Vermont. Scott brings a unique variety of experience and influence to his art. His journeys to Mexico, China, Central America and the Caribbean have influenced his color palette and sense of style.

Morgan enjoys serving as both instructor and mentor to a growing number of beginning and experienced painters.

Grover Wins Mark Twain ScholarshipArlington Memorial High School (AMHS) Senior Ariel Grover was

awarded the Mark Twain Honor Scholarship from Elmira College. Valued at $40,000, the Mark Twain award is given to students “who have demonstrated leadership contributions in various school, religious or community activities” and have met specific academic standards of achievement.

Well known as a student leader on the AMHS campus, Grover’s list of accomplishments is impressive. She served on the Student Council and was elected as a class officer during all four years of high school. Grover currently serves as the Student Council Secretary/Treasurer and Senior Class Vice President. She was elected president of both Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Vermont Kids Against Tobacco (VKAT) and was selected to represent her school at SADD and VKAT state conferences. Grover was also elected to the state-wide SADD Youth Advisory Council.

An honor roll student, Grover participated in the national Close Up student government program in Washington, D.C., and was named to District Chorus. In addition to SADD and VKAT, she has participated in numerous extracurricular activities and athletic teams including the Varsity Theater Players, Madrigals Chorus, basketball, fencing, softball, dance and soccer.

In addition to her school-related activities, Grover has worked with a variety of community service programs including volunteering at

Turning Point, a meeting center for recovering addicts; cooking meals for the disadvantaged; serving as a counselor at a youth dance camp and assisting refugees through mission trips with Arlington’s Federated Church.

Grover plans to study psychology and business in college. In addition to Elmira, she has been accepted to Seton Hall University, Champlain College and Colby Sawyer College. Grover is the granddaughter of Sandy Grover of Arlington.

Founded in 1855, Elmira College is a more-selective, private, liberal arts college of 1,200 students with an historical connection to Mark Twain who wrote many of his works in Elmira, NY, where the college is located.

Documentary Featuring Vermonter and Discussion at Village Picture Shows

In a continuing effort to bring unique events to the community, Village Picture Shows has worked with Alliance for Justice of Washington, DC to present the story of a fellow Vermonter. “Access Denied? The Fight for Corporate Accountability” focuses on the life of Diana Levine of Marshfield, Vermont. Diana’s life was turned on its heals after receiving what was to be a routine medical procedure. The documentary follows Diana’s struggles with everyday life, through the trials and tribulations of taking her case to the highest court in the land.

The documentary, which was produced by Alliance for Justice, was created to expose the steady transformation of federal courts into insti-

tutions that have routinely favored corporate interests over everyday Americans through the stories of musician Diana Levine who lost her arm due to poor drug labeling, and Donald Hickey, whose pacemaker malfunctioned, nearly killing him. In both instances the manufacturers claimed that they could not be held accountable for the consequences since the faulty products had been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In recent years, U.S. Supreme Court opinions have moved toward using “preemption” to enable federal agencies to override states’ con-sumer protection laws, but on March 4, 2009, the U.S. Supreme Court sided with Diana Levine in a 6-3 decision, rejecting the premise that drug manufacturers who fail to warn consumers of the dangers associ-ated with their products can evade responsibility for the harm they can cause.
