Mon, July 4 – The paths of the Maiella...the Goddess of the
eople of Abruzzo Meet your local English-speaking tour guide for a
ull-day outing. From the sea, the majestic massif appears as an
mposing round shape. However going upstream on the River Sangro,
ou will discover a large set of peaks furrowed by deep and imposing
orges, soaring or bent by some invisible and titanic strength. The
Maiella’s karstic rocks have bituminous bulges and visible fossils while
s walls feature inhabitable caves that men and animals have been
ontesting for centuries. Among hidden treasures and secrets, there
till remain colossal stones used to seal the caves’ openings in ordero protect the flocks, and awe-inspiring structures made to glorify God
n these remote places where ancient people used to offer sacrifices
o the Mother Goddess. The morning visit will focus on the town of
Guardiagrele, official seat of the Maiella National Park. In this typical
mountain village, we will see the Cathedral of St. Maria Maggiore, the
