    Monophthongs(or pure vowels) arevowels that are perceived as singlesounds.

    Diphthongs are vowels that are perceivedas two vowel qualities as in:

    time, road, near

    Triphthongsare vowels perceived asthree vowel qualities as in:

    player, fire, royal

    While the position of the tongue is

    more or less stable for a pure vowel

    a diphthong is characterised by a

    graceful movement from one pointto another, for this reason they arealso sometimes known as glides

    divided into two groups:

    Closing diphthongs which tend to movefrom an open to a close position, (theseroughly correspond to Italian sounds)

    Centring diphthongs which tendtowards a central position

    mechanics is vital if one wants tounderstand accents and accent change.
