Introduction

This was our 5th

trip to Indonesia after visiting Java, Bali, the Lesser Sundas, Sulawesi,

Halmahera and West Papua. And it was our second visit to Sumatra, after visiting Way

Kambas only for a few days during a trip in 2002.

On the program this time was the main island of Sumatra with its satellite islands of

Simeulue, Babi and Mentawai. Because we cancelled Enggano at the last moment, we had

some days to spend elsewhere. We went to Gunung Gede on Java, before flying home again.

For Erwin and me, the challenge was to “clean up” some night birds on the flanks of the

volcano. And we succeeded! For Tom, it was his first visit to this place, so a lot of endemics

were waiting for him.

Thanks to…

Medan – Simeulue by Susi Air, Simeulue - Medan by

Wings Air. We booked both flights with Susi Air but due to

the activity of the volcano Gunung Sinabang, the return Susi

Air flight was cancelled. Money was refunded. The bigger

planes of Wings Air kept on flying. Since the last week of

June 2015, Wings Airs is also flying to Simuelue. There is

not only a flight to Medan, but also to Jakarta and Banda

Aceh. Prices are nearly half as they were last March, the

time we booked our tickets with Susi Air. Competition

between the airline companies may even reduce the price.

Medan – Padang by Lion Air. Originally booked by

Sriwijaya Air, but we missed that flight due to the Susi Air

flight cancellation from Simeulue.

Boats and ferries

Simeulue – Babi: boat arranged by the people of the Simeulue Surfing Lodges. See details on

"Visited places".

Padang – MentawaiIslands(Sipora): fast ferryfrom Padang.See details on "Visited places".

Visited places

You can find the GPS-coordinates made during this trip here. For a few sensitive sites and

species, I did not add coordinates in this report. For registered tracks during the trip, please

contact me.

** Sumatra **

Aceh Province – with Gayo Highlands and place for Sumatran

Laughingthrush.

We contacted Agus Nurza to guide us in the Aceh Province. He was accompanied by Tedi

Wahyudi. Both are founders of Aceh Wildlife Photographers and Aceh Birder. So we had 2

guides with us all the time. For finding the specialties of the Aceh region, Agus and Tedi are

the best guides, but they know less about the more common species. After we visited Aceh,

they discovered a place where Grey-faced “Sumatran” Woodpecker is easy to see.

We stayed out in the field the whole day long. At noon, they prepared a sober meal. Also

driving in the night, after a whole day of birding, is no problem for these guys.

Page 4: Trip report to Sumatra and Simeulue and the Mentawai ... Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta, Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped

On request of our guides, I am not giving details about the visited places. Trapping of

Sumatran Laughingthrush, Silver-eared Mesia and Aceh Bulbul is a serious problem with

populations now on a very low density in many parts of Sumatra. Please contact Agus for

more details and guiding.

Birds observed: Gray-breasted (Roll’s) Partridge, Sumatran Laughingthrush (still easy to

find on both places we visited), Sunda Laughingthrush, "Sumatran" Silver-eared Mesia, Rajah

Scops-Owl, Short-tailed Frogmouth. Despite a lot of effort, we could not find Orange-spotted

(Aceh) Bulbul.

Gunung Kerinci and Tapan Road

We stayed at Pak Subandi’s well-known homestay in Kersik Tua, the village near Gunung

Kerinci. It is a 6 hour drive from the airport in Padang to Kersik Tua. Transport was arranged

by Subandi. There is also transport to the start of the trail at Gunung Kerinci (5 minutes’

drive, +/- 5km) and to Tapan Road. The last place is 2 hours driving from the homestay.

Probably a better option is to spend the night closer to Tapan Road, in Sungai Penuh.

Dwi Wahyudi, Subandi's son-in-law is guiding on both Mt. Kerinci and Tapan Road. He is

guiding now for about 5 years and he knows all the specialties. He is less familiar with the

birds on the lower parts of the Tapan Road.

Page 5: Trip report to Sumatra and Simeulue and the Mentawai ... Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta, Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped

More information is of course available in many other trip reports.

Birds observed on Gunung Kerinci: Red-billed Partridge, Salvadori’s Pheasant, Bronze-

tailed Peacock-Pheasant (HO), Blyth’s Hawk-Eagle, Green-spectacled Pigeon, Pink-headed

Fruit-Dove, Mountain Scops-Owl, Rajah Scops-Owl (HO), Barred Eagle-Owl (HO), Short-

tailed Frogmouth (HO), Salvadori’s Nightjar, Sumatran Trogon, Schneider’s Pitta, Sumatran

Drongo, Orange-spotted Bulbul, Black-capped White-eye, Sumatran Wren-Babbler, Rusty-

breasted Wren-Babbler, Rufous-vented Niltava, Shiny Whistling-Thrush, Chestnut-winged

Whistling-Thrush, Sunda Robin, Sumatran Cochoa.

Birds observed at Tapan Road: Bronze-tailed Peacock-Pheasant, Green-spectacled Pigeon,

Sumatran Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta,

Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped Bulbul, Spot-necked Bulbul, Sumatran

Leafbird, Blue-masked Leafbird, Red-throated Sunbird.

Telun Smoky Falls

The Telun Smoky Falls is about one hour driving from Subandi's Homestay. It is situated east

at the foot of Gunung Kerinci. Good place for Waterfall Swift. We counted at least 200 birds

in the evening. See GPS-coordinates, maybe not exact.

Page 6: Trip report to Sumatra and Simeulue and the Mentawai ... Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta, Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped

Birds observed: Waterfall Swift, Sunda Forktail

Barisan Selatan National Park

We visited Way Titias, part of Barisan Selatan NP, the place for the Sumatran Ground-

cuckoo. There is already useful information about this place in other reports. Our guides were

the brothers Kamal and Toni. The money they are asking for guiding is actually much

overrated (7000000 IDR/pp/3days = +/- 125€/pp/day). Mobile telephone number

006281369351137. Best is to send text messages, instead of contacting them by e-mail. Their

English is rather basic.

Birds observed: Gray-breasted (Sumatran) Partridge, Ferruginous Partridge, Bronze-tailed

Peacock-Pheasant, Blyth’s Hawk-Eagle, Green-spectacled Pigeon, Sumatran Ground-Cuckoo,

Sunda Scops-Owl (HO), Sumatran Trogon, Blue-banded Kingfisher, Black-crowned Pitta

(HO), Sumatran Drongo, Cream-striped Bulbul, Ruby-throated Bulbul, Sumatran Babbler,

Chestnut-winged Whistling-Thrush.

** Satellite Islands of Sumatra **

Some of the smaller islands west of the main island of Sumatra hold endemic species. Till

now, these islands were not so often visited by birdwatchers because it was not easy at all to

go there. There were only slow ferries, with uncertain schedules. Only birdwatchers with a lot

of time, took the risk to visit Simeulue, Mentawai, Enggano and Nias. Nowadays, things are

changing rapidly, especially for Simeulue and the Mentawai Islands. The government is

developing these islands for surfing, making these islands more accessible. On the other hand,

they started selling land near the coast for luxury lodges which can have a dramatic impact for

the nature on the island in the future. Local people also told us that Chinese companies are

exploring Simeulue for mining.

Simeulue Island

How to go there:

Page 7: Trip report to Sumatra and Simeulue and the Mentawai ... Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta, Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped

In the past there was only a slow ferry. Now, you can also go by fast ferry or plane. We

travelled from Medan to Simeulue by Susi Air and from Simeulue to Medan by Wings Air.

First, we booked both flights with Susi Air but due to the activity of Gunung Sinabang, the

return Susi Air flight was canceled. Money was refund. Luckily, since the last week of June

2015,Wings Airs is also flying to Simuelue with bigger planes. They are not only flying from

Medan, but also from Jakarta and Banda Aceh. Due to this, the prices are nearly half as they

were last March, the time we booked our tickets with Susi Air.

Accommodation:

We stayed at one of the surf lodges (Simeulue Surf Lodges) at the beach, close to the airport.

It is more relax staying here instead at the capitol town, Sunabang. Roy and Jenny are running

the place. We were the first birdwatchers ever at the lodge. The service was great. There are

motorbikes for free at the lodge which we used all days. Roy also arranged the boat to Babi

Island and he helped us to rebook our flight tickets.

Birding:

Following Clements checklist, for the moment only the scops-owl is endemic but a few

species on the island like Blue-rumped Parrot, Crested Serpent-eagle and Great-eared

Nightjar.... are worth full species status. And of course there is Silvery Wood-pigeon on the

island. Maybe it is the last place on earth where this species survives. There are no details

available in this report about the wood-pigeon site because of the threat of poaching.

Page 8: Trip report to Sumatra and Simeulue and the Mentawai ... Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta, Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped

We found Simeulue Scops-owl near Labuah. See GPS-coordinates.

Babi Island

General info:

Babi Island is only 33 km offshore of Simeulue. It is a very small island, 7 km in diameter.

The only sign of human presence on the island is a communication tower on the NNO-side of

the island. This is the only place where you can access the island. A few fishermen were on

land, together with the guard of the tower.

How to go there:

Roy from the Simeulue Surf Lodges arranged a fisherman boat. We left from a small village

at the east side of the Simeulue. See GPS-coordinates. Price was 2500000 IDR. Time to the

island is 3 hours. Entering and leaving the boat was a challenge as we had to go from the

bigger fisherman boat into a small sloop. Especially at Babi, going on land with the small

sloop was a challenge because of the very rough surf. You only have a small sandy beach near

deep water. By going back on board in Babi, the small sloop even sink with one of us on

board. Luckily, he could swim to the beach again.

Page 9: Trip report to Sumatra and Simeulue and the Mentawai ... Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta, Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped

Birding:

Babi Island was not mentioned in a trip report before last year, when Birdtour Asia wrote

about the "Babi" Monarch. They were the first group of birdwatchers on this tiny island in

100 years. The (sub)species was discovered in 1913, when 2 specimens were collected. We

are probably the first group who are observing this bird after the group of BTA. Till now, the

Babi Monarch is considered as a subspecies of Black-naped Monarch. The only place where

you can go birding is near the communication tower. There are a few very short trails (hardly

to name so) that leave from the tower.

Finding the Babi Monarch is easy. After less than 10 minutes, we found already a couple with

fledgings. And we also found a pair that was building a nest. The female was very easy to

photograph, but the male was shy.

Mentawai Islands (Sipora)

General info:

Page 10: Trip report to Sumatra and Simeulue and the Mentawai ... Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta, Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped

The Mentawai Islands are a group of about 70 small and bigger islands about 150 km offshore

of Padang. The bigger islands are Siberut (the largest), Sipora, North Pagai and South Pagai.

Local people told us Sipora is intended for developing and agriculture. See also “Birding”

paragraph for Mentawai Islands. A big part of Siberut has the status of National Park. Siberut

is also more popular by surfers because of the bigger waves. More luxury lodges will be

available on this island in the future.

How to go there:

We took the fast ferry from Padang to Tua Pejat, on the island Sipora. There’s a ferry every 2

days. It goes from Muara Port in Padang and leaves at 7h00 in the morning. Return crossing

leaves at 15h00. We made a reservation for both crossings (done by Regina

Adventures).Travelling time is 3h30. On the island, we had a (way too expensive) car,

arranged by Regina Adventures Tours. Contact person was Elvis, local representative on

Sipora was Willy. A third person was driving the car. We only saw Willy on the first day and

on the last day to collect his money.

On one of the days when returning to our hotel, we met Mathias or Mateo. He is a tracking

guide and is also arranging logistics for bird tour companies. Maybe contacting him is a better

option than contacting Willy. I lost his contact details, and also on the internet, I did not find

them again.

Accommodation:

We stayed in one of the few basic hotels in Tua Pejat.

Birding:

Following Clements Checklist 2015, the Mentawai Islands group has only 1 endemic,

Mentawai Scops-owl. However, there are a lot of subspecies that have already a species status

on other lists, such as Mentawai Malkoha, Mentawai Serpent-Eagle and Mentawai Drongo. In

the future, even more subspecies may present a separate species, since they differ

significantly.

We explored 3 areas.

Page 11: Trip report to Sumatra and Simeulue and the Mentawai ... Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta, Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped

Area 1: this probably is the road bird tour groups visit for birding. Along this road, for about 2

km, you still find primary forest. After this patch, we saw our first house and small plantation.

Large road construction works are going on, so soon this will be no longer a small track to

primary forest. Due to construction works and heavy rainfall the road was so muddy we could

only go there for 1 afternoon and evening birding. We had both Sunda Frogmouth and

Mentawai Scops-owl here.

Area 2: road for about 5-6 km through patches of primary forest. New houses are under

construction everywhere, logging for agriculture is going on on a lot of places. We were

birding here one afternoon and a morning. We had Mentawai Scops-owl, Hair-crested and

Ashy Drongos. Along a small trail we saw Mentawai Malkoha.

Area 3: at the end of this road (going through areas with houses everywhere), there is a trail

into good forest. Due to heavy rain this trail was so muddy that we could not enter it. At the

border of this forest, we had Mentawai Serpent-eagle and Mentawai Malkoha. Another

serpent-eagle was roosting behind a small mosque along this road. We also found Yellow-

eared Spiderhunter amongst many Little Spiderhunters.

Mentawai Scops-Owl Sunda Frogmouth

** Java **

Gunung Gede

There is already a lot of information on the internet about this volcano. For Javan

Scops-Owl, see the GPS-coordinates.

We stayed at Freddy’s Homestay. The agriculture field of Freddy’s sun Indra is a good

place for Javan Kingfisher (see GPS-coordinates). Place is close near the homestay.

Did not find this spot in another trip report. According to Indra, the birds are in this

area nearly every day.

Birds observed: Chestnut-bellied Partridge, Javan Scops-Owl, Sunda Scops-Owl,

Javan Owlet, Javan Frogmouth, Javan Kingfisher, Flame-fronted Barbet, Rufous-

tailed Fantail, Pygmy Tit, Orange-spotted Bulbul, Javan Tesia, Javan Gray-throated

White-eye, Crescent-chested Babbler, Javan Fulvetta, Javan Whistling-Thrush.

Pulau Dua Bird Sanctuary

This small mangrove area is a protected site. We arrived here in the afternoon. Walking

across the intensive area of ponds, we lost precious time finding the right trail into the

mangroves. We arrived at the best place for Javan White eye only one hour before sunset

and therefore missed it. . The trail starts in a small village, I do not know the name, and it

is about +/-1.5 km to the entrance of the sanctuary. See GPS-coordinates.

Birds observed: Javan Plover, Small Blue Kingfisher, Malaysian Pied-Fantail.

Itinerary

June 20th

Flight Brussels - Abu Dhabi with Etihad.

June 21st

Flight Etihad - Jakarta with Etihad. Flight to Banda Aceh with Garuda Airlines. Agus and

Ted were waiting for us at the airport. Long drive to our hotel, where we arrived after

midnight. Short night, we only had a few hours to recuperate from the long journey of 36

hours.

June 22nd

It was about one and a half hour driving up in the hills for the bird watching places. We

stayed there the whole day.

June 23rd

Page 13: Trip report to Sumatra and Simeulue and the Mentawai ... Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta, Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped

Another full day at the same places we visited yesterday. At dawn, we had a long drive to

our next hotel.

June 24th

Full day birding in the Gayo Highlands. Main target was Roll's Partridge. We only heard 3

birds calling early morning. Rest of the day, we did not hear them calling again. Around

here, Sumatran Laughingthrushes were quiet easy to find. We left the spot at 18h30, and

had a 7 hour drive back to Banda Aceh.

June 25th

After a very short night, we left to the airport at 5 am for our flight to Medan. We had a

connection flight with Susi Air in the afternoon, to Simeulue Island. We were the only

passengers on board of the small airplane. After we arrived at the lodge, we did some

birding late afternoon near the lodge but nothing special was seen.

June 26th

Early morning, we went to the place of the Silvery Wood-Pigeon. 2 birds were sitting in a

dead tree for nearly half an hour. Other good birds were Simeulue White-bellied

Woodpeckers, Red-breasted Parakeet and Ruddy Cuckoo-Dove. We stayed till noon. Late

afternoon, we went out birding near Labuah, where we found a patch of forest. At dusk, a

few Great-eared Nightjars were flying over. And then, a Simeulue Scops-owl was reacting

immediately on playback. It flew in just in front of us so we had fantastic views.

June 27th

We visited the same places as yesterday, except for the woodpigeon spot.

June 28th

Today was the great adventure to Babi Island. As written already, we succeeded in finding

the "Babi" Monarch. It took the whole day to visit the island.

June 29th

We started the day with the news that our flight was cancelled due to a small eruption of

Gunung Sinabang. Another day was spent at the places we already visited. The only target

for Tom and me was Simeulue Serpent-eagle, which was already seen by Erwin 3 days

before. We however could not find one.

June 30th

The morning flight to Medan by Susi Air was cancelled again. Luckily, we had a flight

with Wings Air in the afternoon. We used the extra time to search for the Serpent-eagle

again. Tom searched on another place then Erwin and I did. And he found one. But by the

time we arrived, the bird was already gone. Erwin found it again but it flew off and we

could not find it again.

Night in "The Halfway Lodge" near Medan.

July 1st

At 6 o'clock, we had our one-hour-flight to Padang. At the airport, someone of the

Subandi's homestay was waiting for us. It was a long drive to Kersik Tua. Late afternoon,

we did our first bird watching at the lower parts of the trail, but it was quiet in the forest.

July 2nd

We were on Gunung Kerinci for the whole day. We went higher than Camp Cochoa.

Bonus there was a Pink-headed Fruit-dove.

July 3rd

Gunung Kerinci for the whole day. Not higher than Camp Cochoa.

July 4th

Today, we spent the whole day at Tapan Road.

July 5th

Half day on Gunung Kerinci. Late afternoon we visited the Telun Smoky Falls. Good

place for Waterfall Swift. We counted at least 200 birds at sundown. They were all

passing by.

July 6th

Tapan road again for the whole day. We went to the lower parts of it, at about 500 meters.

Lots of new species for the trip list. Red-throated Sunbird was a lifer.

July 7th

Last morning on Gunung Kerinci was great again with more fantastic views of Schneider's

Pitta and "Sumatran" Sunda Robin on the list as well.

In the afternoon we had the long drive to Padang where we stayed in the Mariani hotel

close near Muara Port.

July 8th

We took the fast ferry to Sipora early in the morning. Crossing took 3 and a half hour. On

Sipora, it was very humid and hot. Therefore, we decided to only go out birding in the

afternoon. There are no trip reports with info about Sipora. Looking on GPS-map, we saw

a few roads going into the forest. We tried one of these (area 2). Soon after we arrived, it

started raining very hard. After an hour it stopped raining and we started birding. There

were not many birds around. But in the evening, we soon found a Mentawai Scops-owl.

July 9th

Page 15: Trip report to Sumatra and Simeulue and the Mentawai ... Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta, Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped

In the morning, we went to the same area as yesterday. Also now, there were not so many

birds around. We decided to try another road (area 3) with good forest at the end of this

road. We found Mentawai Serpent-eagle and Mentawai Malkoha rather easily. Amongst

the common Little Spiderhunters, we saw 2 Yellow-eared Spiderhunters.

In the afternoon, we went to area 1. Main target was Sunda Frogmouth. On the first

attempt, we were already successful. We saw one very well.

July 10th

We thought that the ferry was at noon, but actually it was only at 15h00. We spent the day

hanging around. Night in hotel in Padang.

July 11th

Travelling day. 13 hours from Padang to Bengkulu. Night in Bengkulu.

July 12th

We start the day at 5h30, driving to Liwa. It was another long drive of 8 hours. We

witnessed with our own eyes the total deforestation of lowland Sumatra. We drove

hundreds of kilometers through palm oil plantations.

We stayed at Kamal's house for the first night. Only late afternoon, we did some birding

near the house between the rain showers. We found 2 Ruby-throated Bulbuls and a

Banded Broadbill before it started raining hard again.

July 13th

At 6 o'clock, we left Kamal's house for Way Titias. It was not that far at all before we

reached the start of the trail. Along the way, we found Sumatran Babbler and a few Ruby-

throated Bulbuls. Already from the track, we heard a Sumatran Ground-cuckoo calling.

Kamal never heard one that close to the track. From the moment we entered the forest, it

started raining. We crossed a small stream a few times to reach the place where the

ground-cuckoo was calling. Actually immediately after we arrived there, in the rain, we

saw the ground-cuckoo running around. Kamal was imitating the bird all the time and the

ground-cuckoo kept on making circles around us for minutes. What a great start at Way

Titias. We could spend the rest of the days here without any stress. Next target we heard

after climbing the first slope was a Sumatran Partridge. It approached but never came into

the open. For the rest of the morning, birding was rather slow. At 12 o'clock, we arrived at

our camping place where everything was installed already. In the afternoon, we searched

for partridges again but we only heard both Sumatran and Ferruginous. We did not hear a

ground-cuckoo at the "traditional" places. Light rainfall during the night.

Page 16: Trip report to Sumatra and Simeulue and the Mentawai ... Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta, Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped

July 14th.

The whole day, we searched for the partridges. Finally in the evening, we found both

Sumatran and Ferruginous at the same place. No Ground-cuckoo today. Night in the

forest.

July 15th

In the morning, we did our last few hours of bird watching in Way Titias. In the afternoon,

we drove to Bandar Lampung together with Toni. En route, we had a stop at Toni's house

to have a coffee. Night in Bandar Lampung.

July 16th

Early morning bus to the ferry to Merak (Java). Just at noon, we arrived. It took a while

before we found somebody to drive us to Bogor. We searched for private transport as we

planned to look for Javan White-eye and White-capped Munia near Pulau Dua. We were

in the mangroves and rice fields till dark but we had no success. We arrived late in Bogor,

where the festivities for the end of the Ramadan were in full preparation.

July 17th

In the morning, we took a small public bus to Cibodas. In the afternoon, we visited the

lower parts of Gunung Gede. In the evening, Tom went to the higher parts and he saw

Javan Scops-Owl. Erwin and I stayed at the lower parts. Actually, we were searching for

Tom all the time. We did not know he walked up the trail already. Best bird we saw was

Javan Frogmouth.

July 18th

Early morning, we were on the trail to go to the area Tom saw the Javan Scops-Owl the

evening before. Soon after we arrived there, we also found it. It was one of the most

difficult scops-owl we ever observed. Each time the torch was on the bird, it flew off

immediately. After sunset, we stayed at the higher parts for a while, but nothing special

was seen.

July 19th

Page 17: Trip report to Sumatra and Simeulue and the Mentawai ... Trogon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Black-crowned Pitta, Sumatran Drongo, Sumatran Treepie, Cream-striped

In the morning, we visited the Botanical Gardens. In the meantime Indra, Freddy’s son,

was checking his garden for Sunda Scops-Owl. He found an adult and 2 fledgings. After

he texted us, we went to the place and had great sights of the owls. A pair of Javan

Kingfishers was a great bonus.

At noon, we left Cibodas. We had a lot of time to reach the airport in time, more than 12

hours, but due to a horrible traffic jam, we only managed to get our flight just in time. We

needed nearly 12 hours to bridge 110 km, of which 80 were on a highway.

July 20th

Flight at 1h30. Stop in Abu Dhabi. Arrived in Brussels at 15h35.

Birdlist

Our list of observed birds is strictly following Clements 6th edition

(Updates until August 2015). A few future splits are mentioned in the list, but they are not

Abbotti, “Babi Monarch”. This is actually the bird of the trip. More information is in this trip

report of Birdtour Asia. This species was discovered and collected in 1902. Another 2

specimen were collected in 1913. And that was till now, the end of the story of Babi Monarch.

In 2014, Birdtour Asia was the first group that visited Babi Island again to look for this bird.

We are only the second group in 100 years that visited this island.

It is a large monarch that lacks the black on the nape and breast and it has a dark, intense blue

overall coloration, including the belly. People from Birdtour Asia are preparing an article to

describe this species.
