The Andean ExplorerWitness the glorious scenery of theAndes Mountains during a scenic railjourney from Cuzco to Puno aboard theAndean Explorer. This full-day train ridetakes you from Cuzco, the ancient Incacapital, to Puno and Lake Titicaca, birthplace of the Inca.

Legend has it that the sun god Intirose out of the lake and created MancoCapac, the first Inca. It is fitting, therefore, that Puno, which sits on thenorthern shore of Lake Titicaca, is thefolkloric capital of Peru.

Your journey begins in Cuzco. Thetrain takes you through the HuatanayRiver valley and the majestic AndesMountains. Cuzco sits at 11,152 feetabove sea level, but the train will takeyou even higher. The temperature getsnoticeably cooler as you ascend to higher altitudes and the Altiplano, theAndean plateau. The train stops at La Raya, at 14,177 feet, the highestpoint on the route, before descendingto Puno and Lake Titicaca at 12,549feet.

The trains, decorated in the elegantstyle of the turn-of-the-century Pullmancoaches, are outfitted with comfortablewingback seats. You’ll feel pamperedas staff lavishes you with attentiveservice. A three-course lunch, followedby coffee, is served at midday. Later, afternoon tea provides refreshment.

Along the way, musicians performtraditional Andean music. Then, enjoy a fashion show of clothing made fromthe wool of the alpaca, the region’sdoe-eyed camelids. You’ll even havethe opportunity to purchase some ofthese goods on the train.

TT HEHE II NCANCA EE MPIREMPIREWhen Francisco Pizarro arrived in Peru in 1532,he found the Inca, an advanced society thatstretched for more than 2,000 miles along thespine of the Andes Mountains. The Inca had built an extensive road system, rope suspensionbridges and elaborate stone buildings erectedwithout mortar. The Inca, weakened by smallpoxbrought by Old World explorers, also wereembroiled in civil war as brothers Atahualpa and Huáscar battled for control of the empire. In 1532, Atahualpa killed his brother, claimingtotal power. Later that year, Pizarro capturedAtahualpa. The Inca leader offered a room filledwith gold, which historians today value at nearly$50 million, for his freedom. Pizarro accepted theransom, but double-crossed Atahualpa and killedhim. With its leader gone, the empire fell andthe Spanish soon dominated the region.

Capital. This sacred city is perched 11,152 feetabove sea level. Cuzco’s name, the Inca word fornavel, indicates its position at the center of theInca Empire. Qorikancha, Temple of the Sun,was an astronomical observatory once home tosome 4,000 priests and attendants. Built on thefoundations of an Inca palace, the city’s world-renowned cathedral features a solid-silver altar, massive bell and Cusqueña-style paintings. Thehilltop temple of Sacsayhuamán offers a look atInca military architecture. The nearby SacredValley features the pink-stone fortress PukaPukara and Qenko, an amphitheater wheremummies were worshipped under the sun.

DAY EIGHTPUNOClimb aboard the Andean Explorer for ascenic rail journey from Cuzco, the ancientInca capital, to Puno and the Hotel José

Antonio Executive Puno. Puno, Peru’s folkloric capital, is on the northern shore of Lake Titicaca. The train will make stops,including one at La Raya, the highest pointalong the route, so that you may appreciate the views.

DAY NINEPUNO / LAKE TITICACAExcursion: Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicacasits at 12,500 feet, making it the world’s highest navigable lake. Legend has it that theInca sun god, Inti, rose out of the lake and created Manco Capac, founder of the IncaEmpire. It is home to 33 islands, includingTaquile, where its Quechua residents areknown for their high-quality textiles, and thefloating islands of the Uros people, who live on islands made of totora reeds.

Excursion: Chinchero and the Temple ofOllantaytambo. Chinchero, which legendsays is the birthplace of the rainbow, clings toits cultural roots. Locals speak Quechua andwear traditional dress. At the village market,you’ll find ceramics, silver jewelry and Andeanmusical instruments. Near Ollantaytambo,gigantic monoliths frame the only temple tosuccessfully withstand Spanish attack in the16th century. Ollantaytambo, built on top of anInca settlement, is the one surviving exampleof Inca town planning.

Excursion: Awana Cancha. Learn aboutthe llama, alpaca, vicuña and guanaco. See howthe fleece of these animals is used to weavecolorful clothing.

The Andean ExplorerWitness the glorious scenery of theAndes Mountains during a scenic railjourney from Cuzco to Puno aboard theAndean Explorer. This full-day train ridetakes you from Cuzco, the ancient Incacapital, to Puno and Lake Titicaca, birthplace of the Inca.

Legend has it that the sun god Intirose out of the lake and created MancoCapac, the first Inca. It is fitting, therefore, that Puno, which sits on thenorthern shore of Lake Titicaca, is thefolkloric capital of Peru.

Your journey begins in Cuzco. Thetrain takes you through the HuatanayRiver valley and the majestic AndesMountains. Cuzco sits at 11,152 feetabove sea level, but the train will takeyou even higher. The temperature getsnoticeably cooler as you ascend to higher altitudes and the Altiplano, theAndean plateau. The train stops at La Raya, at 14,177 feet, the highestpoint on the route, before descendingto Puno and Lake Titicaca at 12,549feet.

The trains, decorated in the elegantstyle of the turn-of-the-century Pullmancoaches, are outfitted with comfortablewingback seats. You’ll feel pamperedas staff lavishes you with attentiveservice. A three-course lunch, followedby coffee, is served at midday. Later, afternoon tea provides refreshment.

TT HEHE II NCANCA EE MPIREMPIREWhen Francisco Pizarro arrived in Peru in 1532,he found the Inca, an advanced society thatstretched for more than 2,000 miles along thespine of the Andes Mountains. The Inca had built an extensive road system, rope suspensionbridges and elaborate stone buildings erectedwithout mortar. The Inca, weakened by smallpoxbrought by Old World explorers, also wereembroiled in civil war as brothers Atahualpa and Huáscar battled for control of the empire. In 1532, Atahualpa killed his brother, claimingtotal power. Later that year, Pizarro capturedAtahualpa. The Inca leader offered a room filledwith gold, which historians today value at nearly$50 million, for his freedom. Pizarro accepted theransom, but double-crossed Atahualpa and killedhim. With its leader gone, the empire fell andthe Spanish soon dominated the region.

Qorikancha, Temple of the Sun,was an astronomical observatory once home tosome 4,000 priests and attendants. Thehilltop temple of Sacsayhuamán offers a look atInca military architecture. Antonio Executive Puno. Puno, Peru’s folkloric capital, is on the northern shore of Lake Titicaca. The train will make stops,including one at La Raya, the highest pointalong the route, so that you may appreciate the views.

DAY NINEPUNO / LAKE TITICACAExcursion: Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicacasits at 12,500 feet, making it the world’s highest navigable lake. Legend has it that theInca sun god, Inti, rose out of the lake and created Manco Capac, founder of the IncaEmpire. It is home to 33 islands, includingTaquile, where its Quechua residents areknown for their high-quality textiles, and thefloating islands of the Uros people, who live on islands made of totora reeds.

At the village market,you’ll find ceramics, silver jewelry and Andeanmusical instruments. Near Ollantaytambo,gigantic monoliths frame the only temple tosuccessfully withstand Spanish attack in the16th century. Ollantaytambo, built on top of anInca settlement, is the one surviving exampleof Inca town planning.

Qorikancha, Temple of the Sun,was an astronomical observatory once home tosome 4,000 priests and attendants. Built on thefoundations of an Inca palace, the city’s world-renowned cathedral features a solid-silver altar, massive bell and Cusqueña-style paintings. Thehilltop temple of Sacsayhuamán offers a look atInca military architecture. The nearby SacredValley features the pink-stone fortress PukaPukara and Qenko, an amphitheater wheremummies were worshipped under the sun.

DAY EIGHTPUNOClimb aboard the Andean Explorer for ascenic rail journey from Cuzco, the ancientInca capital, to Puno and the Hotel José

Antonio Executive Puno. Puno, Peru’s folkloric capital, is on the northern shore of Lake Titicaca. The train will make stops,including one at La Raya, the highest pointalong the route, so that you may appreciate the views.

DAY NINEPUNO / LAKE TITICACAExcursion: Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicacasits at 12,500 feet, making it the world’s highest navigable lake. Legend has it that theInca sun god, Inti, rose out of the lake and created Manco Capac, founder of the IncaEmpire. It is home to 33 islands, includingTaquile, where its Quechua residents areknown for their high-quality textiles, and thefloating islands of the Uros people, who live on islands made of totora reeds.

The Andean ExplorerWitness the glorious scenery of theAndes Mountains during a scenic railjourney from Cuzco to Puno aboard theAndean Explorer. This full-day train ridetakes you from Cuzco, the ancient Incacapital, to Puno and Lake Titicaca, birthplace of the Inca.

Legend has it that the sun god Intirose out of the lake and created MancoCapac, the first Inca. It is fitting, therefore, that Puno, which sits on thenorthern shore of Lake Titicaca, is thefolkloric capital of Peru.

Your journey begins in Cuzco. Thetrain takes you through the HuatanayRiver valley and the majestic AndesMountains. Cuzco sits at 11,152 feetabove sea level, but the train will takeyou even higher. The temperature getsnoticeably cooler as you ascend to higher altitudes and the Altiplano, theAndean plateau. The train stops at La Raya, at 14,177 feet, the highestpoint on the route, before descendingto Puno and Lake Titicaca at 12,549feet.

The trains, decorated in the elegantstyle of the turn-of-the-century Pullmancoaches, are outfitted with comfortablewingback seats. You’ll feel pamperedas staff lavishes you with attentiveservice. A three-course lunch, followedby coffee, is served at midday. Later, afternoon tea provides refreshment.

The Andean ExplorerWitness the glorious scenery of theAndes Mountains during a scenic railjourney from Cuzco to Puno aboard theAndean Explorer. This full-day train ridetakes you from Cuzco, the ancient Incacapital, to Puno and Lake Titicaca, birthplace of the Inca.

Legend has it that the sun god Intirose out of the lake and created MancoCapac, the first Inca. It is fitting, therefore, that Puno, which sits on thenorthern shore of Lake Titicaca, is thefolkloric capital of Peru.

Your journey begins in Cuzco. Thetrain takes you through the HuatanayRiver valley and the majestic AndesMountains. Cuzco sits at 11,152 feetabove sea level, but the train will takeyou even higher. The temperature getsnoticeably cooler as you ascend to higher altitudes and the Altiplano, theAndean plateau. The train stops at La Raya, at 14,177 feet, the highestpoint on the route, before descendingto Puno and Lake Titicaca at 12,549feet.

The trains, decorated in the elegantstyle of the turn-of-the-century Pullmancoaches, are outfitted with comfortablewingback seats. You’ll feel pamperedas staff lavishes you with attentiveservice. The Andean ExplorerWitness the glorious scenery of theAndes Mountains during a scenic railjourney from Cuzco to Puno aboard theAndean Explorer. This full-day train ridetakes you from Cuzco, the ancient Incacapital, to Puno and Lake Titicaca, birthplace of the Inca.

Legend has it that the sun god Intirose out of the lake and created MancoCapac, the first Inca. It is fitting, therefore, that Puno, which sits on thenorthern shore of Lake Titicaca, is thefolkloric capital of Peru.

Your journey begins in Cuzco. Thetrain takes you through the HuatanayRiver valley and the majestic AndesMountains. Cuzco sits at 11,152 feetabove sea level, but the train will takeyou even higher. The temperature getsnoticeably cooler as you ascend to higher altitudes and the Altiplano, theAndean plateau. The train stops at La Raya, at 14,177 feet, the highestpoint on the route, before descendingto Puno and Lake Titicaca at 12,549feet.

The trains, decorated in the elegantstyle of the turn-of-the-century Pullmancoaches, are outfitted with comfortablewingback seats. You’ll feel pamperedas staff lavishes you with attentiveservice. A three-course lunch, followedby coffee, is served at midday. Later, afternoon tea provides refreshment.

Along the way, musicians performtraditional Andean music. Then, enjoy a fashion show of clothing made fromthe wool of the alpaca, the region’sdoe-eyed camelids. You’ll even havethe opportunity to purchase some ofthese goods on the train.
