To all Friends of Trinity,

With this fall issue of the Trinity Leader we are continuing the practice of presenting our Annual Report. We hope this is an effective way of keeping you apprised of our stewardship of your gifts.

With your financial, moral and prayerful support, Trinity is able to offer significant advantages to our students:

Our beautiful and modern campus is alive year round with teaching and learning.

We are able to attract and retain a skilled and devoted faculty and staff.

Hundreds of families are able to afford to send their sons to Trinity with the help of tuition assistance.

We are able to provide an enriching learning environment for all students, regardless of their academic strengths and weaknesses.

We have received excellent financial support from alumni, parents and friends of Trinity during 2001-02. While the tragicevents of Sept. 11, 2001 slowed donations during the first part of the fiscal year, momentum increased as we neared June 30.

Because of our non-tuition revenue, we were able to charge a tuition that was nearly $2,000 less than the actual per student cost.

Your gift to the Father Kevin Caster Annual Fund Appeal is crucial to our financial stability. As you plan your charitablecontributions, please consider making a first-time gift or increasing your last gift to our annual appeal. We have included a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope in this issue for your convenience.

Donations to Trinity are made to the Trinity High School Foundation, Inc. Supported by a board of directors numberingmore than 100 persons, the Foundation is a fully insured, 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization. All gifts to the Foundation aretax-deductible. Its records are audited annually. Gifts made to Trinity stay with Trinity.

Please make a gift to the 2003 Father Kevin Caster Annual Fund Appeal.

You are making a difference in the life of a young person.

All my best,

Robert J. Mullen Ed.D. ’77President

WOOOOOW!This is the best way to type the way my

2-year old son says “Wow!” He says it a lot. Looking back at the previous year at

Trinity can cause anybody to say “Wow!”This Annual Report tries to capture some

of the excitement that surrounds Trinitytoday. There are so many people rowing in

the same direction, helping us to grow and get better. This issueof the Trinity Leader gives us a chance to report what we haveaccomplished. It also gives us a chanceto say “Thank you” to the nearly 3,000donors who have supported our missionover the past year.

As you have read in previous issues,we are preparing for a yearlong celebra-tion of the 50th anniversary of ourfounding. The 2003-04 school year willbring many events that highlight ourjourney. The efforts of Dr. John Kleber’59, Lynn Olympia, Bob Pfaadt ’59 andFather George Kilcourse ’65 to writeour history have allowed us a glimpseinto our past. Our humbling beginningsmay have been the greatest gift given tothe school.

In researching our past, we havelearned that while struggling to estab-lish an identity among older schools and facing meagerresources, our founding teachers and parents decided the onlyway to survive was to work harder than everybody else. We wereblessed not only with visionaries but also with supporters whowould get things done. Back then there were more reasons forTrinity not to make it than there were reasons for her to thrive.

Now, in these modern times, we see a Trinity that is recog-nized as one of the community’s greatest educational assets. Ourlegacy of hard work and innovative solutions is alive and welltoday. I hope you enjoy our look at the past year. Be mindfulthough, we are not resting on our laurels. The best is yet to come.

I have provided a review of some areas of the school thatshowed progress in the past year. Please take time to read thecolumns written by Dave Winkler, Father Dave Zettel ’58 andSean McGuire ’84 for more reviews on other areas of campuslife. We have great news to report.

GIVING Gifts to the 2002 Father Kevin Caster Annual Fund Appealnearly eclipsed the record set last year. Given the events of 9/11and the woes in the stock market, we are especially thankful for

the support shown Trinity. We received more than $580,000 in

gifts to the Annual Fund Appeal. In sim-plest terms, this means our tuition wasnearly $600 less per family than what itwould have to be without your support. You can imagine the difference thismakes for families. The 2002 celebraTion dinner auctionwas the most successful in school his-tory. The event set new records fornumber of patrons (625), gross receipts( $ 3 0 0 , 0 0 0 + ) a n d n e t p r o c e e d s($225,000+), which goes to supportstudent activity programs, student ath-letics and tuition aid funds.

In a special moment that evening, more than $48,000 was given and

pledged to establish an endowed scholarship fund in memory ofRon Gamboa ’86, a victim of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks onAmerica. This giving translates into another $225 per family thatdoes not have to be charged for tuition.

Hundreds of volunteers, donors and patrons make this event asuccess. Those who made pledges to the record-setting Shamrock SpiritCampaign remained very loyal to their commitment. Nearly allgifts to the campaign will be received by the end of 2002. Thecampaign allowed the school to build the R.W. Marshall Sports

Center, the new Shamrock Hall and the Floersh Hall extensionwithout tuition dollars. If conventional loans had been necessaryto build these needed facilities, tuition would have been $225more per family for each of the next 20 years! Additionally, $1million was added to the endowment through the campaign. New endowed scholarship funds have been established in thepast year. Proceeds from these funds’ earnings will be used fortuition aid programs. Several other funds are in development andwill be announced once certain targets have been reached. The school continued to receive numerous in-kind gifts fromgenerous supporters. Friends of the school also provided steep dis-counts on various supplies and services that were needed duringthe year. The cost savings from these donations were substantial. Trinity returned to having the 1953 Society Dinner to recognizeand thank donors to the school. At the event Mr. Charlie LeisH’01, Chair of the Trinity High School Foundation, was giventhe first “Steiny Award.” The award, named in honor of Mon-signor Steinhauser, honors an individual who has significantlycontributed to the health and vitality of the school through vol-unteer service and visionary leadership.

ENROLLMENT We will enroll the largest freshman class in the history of theschool. Total school enrollment will rival that of the mid-’70swhen court-ordered busing inflated the size of our student body. Even though the enrollment has grown, we will enjoy theLOWEST average class size in the school’s history. While finalnumbers are not available at the time of this writing, the averageclass size should be approximately 21 students per class. This ismade possible by the expansion of the campus and the steadyincrease in the teaching staff. (The student-teacher ratio is evenlower than the average class size.) While enrollment has increased, we have actually made ourschool “smaller.” The unique and remarkable House System hasgripped the school.

Through our 10 Houses, students were called to be moreengaged in leadership, school spirit and service. They respondedbeyond our expectations. Surveys completed by freshmenrevealed exceptional levels of attachment to the school. Thismay account for the 98 percent retention rate of the Class of2005 into their sophomore year. This is the highest retention ratein recent memory. David Power ’89 was saluted as Honor Alumnus for 2002 for

his many contributions to our image campaign. His talented col-leagues at Power Creative have helped us capture the essence ofwhat we mean by, “It’s not just who you are, it’s who you can be.”

CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS The largest remodeling project ever attempted in the school’shistory transformed the three main classroom buildings intomodern facilities with many new features, including a new heat-ing and air conditioning system. Within the last two years, allclassrooms have received new floors, ceilings, lights, blinds, intercom systems and windows. The Chapel, faculty lounge, 15 offices, Steinhauser Gym-nasium and many common areas were renovated. The resultswere rejuvenating and exciting. Visitors to campus are astoundedat the transformation that has taken place in the last two years. A third-floor connector was built between Floersh Hall andSheehan Hall, ending the 37-year need to trek to the second floorwhen one wanted to move between buildings. A school-wide cabling project brought new video, voice anddata connections throughout the campus. Numerous improvements to the building exteriors and groundswere completed. The parking lots for the Auditorium and Arts Center wererepaved and drainage along Sherrin Avenue improved. Two classrooms were constructed in Steinhauser Gymnasiumfor health classes. The locker rooms were also upgraded. Ceilings and floors in the Communication Arts Center class-rooms were replaced and modernized. A ramp was installed on the first floor of Old Trinity Hall andchair lifts added to the Communication Arts Center to improveaccessibility for those needing assistance. All new student lockers were installed throughout the class-room buildings. This project eliminated the need for constantrepairs and standardized the size of all lockers. A new ceiling was installed in the cafeteria to improve thesound and aesthetics. Many thanks go to Integral Structures, Dick Eckert H’00, TomEckert ’82 and Glynn Stengel ’67 for their oversight of these pro-jects. Joe Demling ‘68, manager of our buildings and grounds, and his crew worked tirelessly throughout the year to maintainthe campus to “Open House” standards.

TECHNOLOGY True to our heritage of finding innovative solutions to naggingproblems, several initiatives were unveiled this past school yearwith positive results. These included:

NOTICE OF NONDISCRIMINATORY POLICY

Trinity High School admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally available to students. Trinity does not discrimi-nate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, scholarship or loan program, athletic or other school-administered programs.

• Grades were posted online about every three weeks forviewing by students and parents. This resulted in a dramaticdecrease (35 percent) in the number of students who wererequired to attend our Summer Program due to a failingclass grade.• We opened two new computer labs that featured special-ized software, enabling students to work in a structured curriculum with intensive teacher coaching. Students usingthe software showed substantial increases in grade-levelachievement.• Every classroom was outfitted with a telephone and newvideo, voice and data cabling. Direct-dial phone numbersand voicemail allowed each teacher to more easily partnerwith parents in communicating news about their son.Teacher-parent e-mail messages were commonplace andallowed for more immediate attention to issues that arose.• The website became a tool for making reservations to con-certs, plays and sports camps.• New word processing devices were purchased for useduring resource periods with high levels of student satis-faction.• The first participants in the two-year Cisco NetworkingAcademy completed their work with plans for further com-puter science study in college.• Additional computers were added in more than half theclassrooms for student use. Various digital cameras, projec-tors, printers and scanners were purchased and distributedthroughout the campus.

Work was begun this summer on renovating the ground floor ofOld Trinity Hall. Three new computer labs will be in use in thatarea for the 2002-03 school year, including a lab devoted solelyfor use by students in resource classes. This brings the total num-ber of labs to five, in addition to a lab that is maintained on amobile cart for use in various locations. A new administrative software package for the AcademicServices area was purchased that will speed operations andimprove numerous functions. A new accounting software pack-age was also installed. The web site underwent an extensive revamping while hostingof the site was brought inside the school.

CO-WORKER INVOLVEMENTWe have placed a high priority on co-worker involvement toincrease ownership and ensure that our campus and programsremain fresh and serve our students’ interests. Some examples ofwhere co-worker involvement has taken place:

• An art and environment team made many recommenda-tions for improving campus spaces. Individuals from thisgroup volunteered to orchestrate all the decorating aspects

of the various remodeling projects. In particular, Father RonDomhoff H’98, Mike Jones ’74 and Jim Connell ’63 wereinstrumental in turning our plans into beautiful and func-tional spaces.• A new monthly parent newsletter became reality becauseof the early work of Glennda Tingle and the ongoing laborof Mary Ann Snyder and Adam Klein. The newsletter hasstrengthened the parent-school partnership by improvingcommunication.• Mike Budniak continued his leadership efforts with help-ing Trinity establish partnerships with schools in Belize.Another group of Trinity students and teachers visitedBelize last summer.• Members of the Counseling Department and the Office forSchool Advancement met to examine student attrition andretention issues. Better understanding emerged as to whysome students exit Trinity before graduation.• Professional development teams have continued to pros-per. While still developing as a way to orchestrate profes-sional development, these teams are the truest expression of co-worker involvement. These teams foster collegialaccountability and peer learning.• The Faculty Senate was brought into very direct involve-ment in constructing the calendar for the 2002-03 schoolyear. Several new ideas were instituted in the ongoingprocess of determining the best way to welcome and orientteachers back to the school year.• Co-workers were instrumental in improving the Augustregistration processes. New ideas were implemented thatsignificantly reduced the amount of time a student and hisfamily waited to address a schedule concern. Even with alarger student body, there were few delays in registering stu-dents after several new approaches were used in the tradi-tional two-day format.• Members of the Studies Office and Principal’s Office —Dave Winkler, Mary Ann Hall, Jackie Carrico, LisettaKenny and Mary Ann Snyder — formulated a customer ser-vice manifesto as they examined the various processes usedin the Academic Services operation.

TUITION ASSISTANCE Your generosity allowed us to distribute nearly $600,000 intuition assistance to Trinity families who were able to demon-strate need. This is the largest amount of aid we have ever dis-tributed. Many students earned tuition assistance by participatingin our work-study program. Families are required to complete afinancial aid application form similar to that used in the collegeaid process.

eople all around frequently askme, “How long have you beenat Trinity?” In jest, I used toanswer, “Oh, about a hundredyears!” Lately, I have been

teasing people by answering, “Since thebeginning of time!”

A lot of time has indeed passed since Iwas first a student here in the fall of 1954. Let me share a fewimpressions from my perspective.

Back then, in our first fledgling days (as well as in 1966 whenI was brought on board as a faculty member, and even as late as20 years ago), I wouldn’t have imagined that Trinity High Schoolcould become what it is today or that we could progress as far aswe have.

This past year is witness to that. I am able to appreciate morethan ever the serious professionals on our faculty and in ouradministration and support staff, whom we have been so fortu-nate to attract to us. Our Opening Mass last August and similarpublic worship and prayer set and retained a style and religiousfocus for the year. Exceptional senior class leadership helpedmaintain that direction throughout the year.

The new House System remarkably helped to make this largeschool smaller and more manageable for all of us. It allowed usto monitor and retain more student contact. It provided vigorousactivities to engage our guys. It supplied a built-in “Big Brother”

program that connected students — all in line with our Catholic/Christian philosophy of inclusion and welcoming in the spirit ofthe Gospels.

Our rigorous campus ministry provided us with well plannedworship and prayer, deliberate Christian service projects and, ofcourse, a full range of student retreat offerings. Nearly constantongoing physical and technological improvements have contin-ued to raise the quality of life around us and allow us to carry outour mission of the formation of Catholic/Christian young men.

And all of this without even mentioning the consistent, daily, hourly, effective classroom instruction provided by faculty andstaff who serve readily, cheerfully and compassionately in themanner of Jesus himself. Add to that championship athletics anda full array of engaging activities. One parent recently expressedto me how grateful he is that there are all of these aspects of lifeat Trinity to involve his son while so much else out there isthreatening and destructive. We believe, along with St. Irenaneusin the second century A.D., that the “glory of God is the personfully alive.”

And through it all, an abiding Trinity Spirit pervades our entirecampus culture. It is a reflection of the actual interior life of ournamesake, The Trinity that is our God. It is in the air; it is in ourhearts. It is Gospel-bound-and-based, providing ongoing impe-tus for us to carry out our mission and never be satisfied withwhat we do — the formation of these young Trinity men.

We are truly at the top of our game.

his past year has been filledwith many accomplishmentsfor the Trinity Alumni Board.

As in years past, we as theTrinity Alumni Association,

continue to sponsor and support manyevents that happen on campus. The mostimportant activities surround the focal point

of this great school: the student. Your Alumni Board supports the student in many ways. The

annual Shamrock Awards Dinner celebrates the academic talentsand accomplishments of the Trinity student. The Senior Break-fast is an event for our soon-to-be alumni members to enjoy thefruits of their time at Trinity. The Father Kevin Caster AnnualFund Appeal is a way for alumni to give financial treasure/sup-port for Trinity tuition assistance programs. The annual Rockinfreshman orientation experience is an avenue for alumni to spendsome fun time with our new freshman class and future brotheralumni. The Open House is an important moment for alumni togive their time back to the school and speak about their Trinityexperience to prospective students and their parents.

Along with these activities, the Alumni Board sponsors manyactivities that we as members can enjoy: the Sandy NewmanGolf Classic (formerly the Alumni Golf Scramble), the Sham-rock Bass Classic, the Hall of Fame Banquet, the HonorAlumnus Award and class reunions.

As you can see, we are a very active association at Trinity. These events don’t just happen. It takes a collective effort fromour alumni through their TIME, TALENT and TREASURE. Themost important accomplishment of the Alumni Board over thepast year is providing an avenue for our Association to reach outto more members through what we have named the ClassAmbassador Program. I want to commend the past two AlumniBoard chairs, Chris Tompkins ’78 and Mark Plummer ’69, forhaving this insight.

We recently finalized what the Class Ambassador program isand what we will strive to do through this program.

CLASS AMBASSADOR PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENTThe Class Ambassador program works in conjunction with theAlumni Board to increase the time and talent of fellow alumni. Our focus is to increase alumni awareness of, involvement in andsupport of Trinity through effective communication. The ClassAmbassador Program is a mechanism for alumni to volunteer forcurrent alumni-sponsored and school activities. Through thisprogram, we will provide a network that re-connects our alumnito Trinity High School.

OBJECTIVES: Increase our core of volunteers for current alumni-sponsoredevents Avenue for alumni to support school activities in need of assis-tance Ambassadors will serve on and/or chair a variety of AlumniBoard committees Improve communication to alumni through the Alumni sectionof Trinity’s website Avenue for ambassadors to become future board members

This issue of the Trinity High School Annual Reportis dedicated to Mr. R.W. “Buck” Marshall H’00. Alongtime admirer of Trinity, Mr. Marshall hasmade a lasting impact on the face of the campus ina very short time. His generosity during the

Shamrock Spirit Campaign resulted in the opening of the R.W.Marshall Center in the fall of 1999. This 26,000-square footfacility is a year-round sport and fitness training center. Thebuilding contains the Trinity Sports Medicine Department, locker rooms, training and conference rooms, and headquarters

for the cross country, football and wrestling programs. Alsohoused in this showpiece is a 7,400-square foot weight room —one of the largest and finest in the United States. Additionally,Buck’s gifts helped build the R. Haskell Marshall SuccessCenter. The two labs, comprising 50 computers and supported byproven “SuccessMaker” software, are named after Buck’s father,a longtime teacher.

In gratitude for Buck’s loyal support, we offer the 2001-02Trinity Annual Report to the Trinity Family.

The graduating Seniors from the Class of 2002continued a tradition begun by the Class of 1992.Pledges to the Father Kevin Caster Annual FundAppeal totaling more than $17,000 were made bythe class and announced at graduation. These

pledges will be fulfilled over the next five years, just in time fortheir first reunion. The Class of 2002’s example and commit-ment epitomizes their theme for the past year: “Proud Heritage.Bold Future.”

What is the Annual Fund Appeal? The Father Kevin Caster Annual Fund Appeal is a fund raising ven-ture to help bridge the gap between the actual cost of educating aTrinity student (more than $8,000) and our 6,350-dollar tuition.

What are Annual Fund contributions used for?One thing: tuition assistance. Approximately 40 percent of our stu-

dents receive financial assistance, and the Annual Fund Appeal is cru-cial to these students and their families. Without it, they would nothave the means to attend Trinity. It really is that simple.

Annual Fund Appeal contributions do not pay for painting thewalls, salaries, textbooks, sports uniforms, cutting the grass or chalk-ing the football field. More than $580,000 was raised for the 2002Annual Fund Appeal.

When does the Annual Fund Appeal begin and end?Trinity operates on a fiscal year running from July 1 of one yearthrough June 30 of the next. In other words, the 2003 Annual FundAppeal began on July 1, 2002, and will end on June 30, 2003.

What does that mean if you made a contribution before June 30, 2002?All Annual Fund gifts received prior to June 30, 2002, were creditedto the 2002 Annual Fund Appeal.

Will there be an Annual Fund Appeal every year?Yes. The Annual Fund Appeal was initiated in 1991. It is the mostsuccessful, widely used method for private high schools and univer-sities to raise funds for tuition assistance.

How does Trinity raise money for its educational experience? We have four methods of funding Trinity High School:

1. Tuition (annual). Nearly 80 percent of our revenue is spent onemployee compensation. Tuition will not decrease. It will riseapproximately $300 to $500 per year. Paying a competitive wage, attracting qualified faculty and providing on-going professionaldevelopment drive costs upward. 2. Father Kevin Caster Annual Fund Appeal (annual). TheAnnual Fund Appeal funds all tuition assistance programs. Memorialscholarships are part of the Annual Fund Appeal.3. celebraTion (annual). Formerly known as the Benefit Dinner, celebraTion funds Trinity Athletics and Trinity Student Activities(drama, intramural sports, Chess Club, Speech Team, etc.). Revenueis generated via a silent auction, a live auction and capital prizeticket sales.4. Capital campaigns (occasional). Trinity’s last capital campaignwas the wildly successful Shamrock Spirit Campaign, which endedin January 1999. The goal was $3.2 million. More than $3.9 millionhas been pledged to date. This campaign paid for two new athleticfacilities and added more than $1 million to Trinity’s growingendowment.

If I make a contribution now, will I receive a phone call duringthe Phonathon in February or March? No.

Can I fulfill my pledge in installments?Yes. Please see the enclosed Annual Fund Appeal envelope for details.

Why should you make a contribution?Give to give back. ATrinity education goes above and beyond a highschool education, and you know it. Trinity provides a spiritual foun-dation and support. Trinity provides championship-level athletics.Trinity provides a priceless academic experience. Trinity shapes theheads and hearts of all who attend here.

Think about your life without a Trinity education. There are manyyoung men in Kentuckiana who want that same experience and sim-ply cannot afford it. Please help them become your next brotheralumni.

A N N U A L F U N D G I F T L E V E L STrinity gratefully acknowledges the support we receive from ouralumni, parents, faculty, staff, friends, corporations and foundationsfor the advancement of our educational mission. As a way to honorour donors for gifts made to the Annual Fund, we have establishedthe following gift levels:

1953 SOCIETY – In salute to the year of our founding and firstfreshman class, this level of giving demonstrates the same spirit ofadventure and trust present in those early years. A gift of $1,000 ormore places contributors in this society.

PRESIDENT’S SOCIETY – Trinity has been blessed with strongleaders since its inception. Contributors at this level show their ownsignificant leadership. Gifts of $500-$999 create this level.

TRINITY LEADER SOCIETY – Named in recognition of therole that Trinity alumni are now playing in this community and else-where. Those who donate $250-$499 qualify for this level.

TRINITY SHAMROCK CLUB – The Shamrock has come tobe known as symbolic of a school committed to achievement.Likewise, donors of gifts between $100 and $249 remain steadfastin their belief that Trinity is moving forward.

GREEN AND WHITE CLUB – Our alma mater states...“Loyalto the Green and White.” Many faithful supporters have proudlyworn these school colors. Participants at this level remain confidentof Trinity’s future. Gifts of $50-$99 place one in this category.

ROD McCRAVY CLUB – Named for a 1986 graduate ofTrinity, Rod was known for his love of life. Tragically, he died of aheart defect in his second year of college. He typified the spirit ofenthusiasm, excitement and determination hoped for in every Trinitygraduate. Gifts up to $49 qualify donors for this level.

volunteer listings, we worked hard to correct all errors. Please contact the Office

for School Advancement at (502) 893-7625 to report any errors. Trinity High

School wishes to express deep appreciation to the many individuals who made

TRINITY RECEIVES DONATION OF 120 ACRESrinity can now boast the largest outdoor classroom ofany other school in Jefferson County — and possibly thestate — thanks to the generosity of some Trinity-con-

nected developers.John H’02 (parent of John ’97 and Aron ’99) and Jesse H’02

(parent of Patrick ’93) Flynn, owners of Flynn Brothers Con-tracting, donated more than 120 acres of a forest conservationpreserve to the Trinity High School Foundation in August. Theland will be used by Trinity students and teachers for science andenvironmental studies.

The property, located off the Outer Loop behind the formerLouisville Motor Speedway, will give students a unique look atwildlife in its natural habitat.

“With the new preserve, we will have a relatively pristine andreal environment to study, from an ecological standpoint and

from a specimen-collection and identification standpoint aswell,” said Michael Budniak, one of four science teachers whovisited the site this summer. “There are so many forms of life inthe immediate area that students and adults take for granted, andthis preserve will give us the true ability to experience and learnabout them in a setting that puts to shame the sterility of theclassroom or indoor lab.”

“With the acquisition of this property, we have an incredibleopportunity to provide a hands-on learning experience for ourstudents unlike any other,” said Trinity President Dr. Rob Mullen’77. “Science and environmental studies in the classroom are onething; being able to actually observe these living species andconditions in their natural environment takes our science cur-riculum to a whole new level. We owe the Flynns a very specialTrinity thanks and salute for their incredible generosity!”

Alumni in Uniform Honored for Serviceore than 150 names of alumni actively serving in themilitary, police force or other uniformed servicegrace a wall on the second floor of Floersh Hall at

Trinity High School. These alumni have endured demandingtraining, life-and-death situations and combat. They protect usfrom harm, patrol our streets and defend our country.

They also serve as an example for Trinity’s current students.Like the students of today, the men honored came from all walksof life and from all levels of academic ability. There are at leasteight sets of brothers on the list and others have brothers stillattending Trinity.

The Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks brought our country’s mil-itary, emergency medical services and fire and police depart-ments into the forefront of public awareness. Trinity Englishteacher John Kahl ’69 decided to honor Trinity’s contribution tothese proud ranks. With the help of some students from Trinity’sFlannan House, Kahl erected a salute display on Nov. 11, 2001.Names are listed according to their field of service, and some ofthe men’s Trinity yearbook pictures are included.

“I started this as a tribute to all the grads who put their lives onthe line to help protect us,” said Kahl. “I am intensely proud ofmy brother alumni for the roles they play in maintaining our free-doms. Students need to see people who’ve come before themwho’ve dedicated their lives to service to others. Even though wedo not see these men walking the halls of Trinity, their spirit isbehind so much of what we do here. They are not forgotten.”

FootballAs always, the Rocks have a state championship in mind. Thecelebration for the 45-13 win over Male for the 2001 Class 4-AState Championship was sweet, but the work for the 2002 seasonsoon began.

The defense will be completely reloaded with new faces. However, in two pre-season scrimmage games, the Rocks heldScott County and a highly regarded Lexington Catholic team toan average of 12 points. Said offensive coordinator AndrewCoverdale, “We’re young but hungry on defense.” As during lastseason, the defense will run a split look and utilize its quickness.

Offensively, Trinity is led by four starters from last season’steam, including junior quarterback Brian Brohm. He will be pro-tected by an offensive line that is not as big as last year’s groupbut much quicker.

“We always have personnel groupings to benefit our talent,”said third-year head coach Bob Beatty. “We’ll show some newwrinkles as we have new backs that can run. We’ll try to be as bal-anced as possible. We’ve been impressed with our receivers sofar, and we’ll continue to throw the ball anytime and anywhere.”

In addition to being ranked No. 1 in the coaches’ preseasonpoll, Trinity is ranked 16th in USA Today’s “Super 25” footballrankings.

SoccerTrinity is the No. 1 team in the state coaches’ preseason poll. The Rocks return seven starters from last year’s talented squad, which finished 18-5 and lost all of its games by one goal.

“Mature, strong and fast,” is how head coach Walter Matadescribes the 2002 team. “We have 12 seniors — the most sincewe won state in ’98. The seniors have taken the lead of thisteam, as they’re expected to.”

The Rocks will use their strength and speed to run balancedoffensive and defensive attacks. As well, most of Trinity’s play-ers have been playing together at the club level since gradeschool so they know each other’s strengths, weaknesses andplaying styles.

“We’ll pursue, attack and score from all directions,” saidMata. “This is a very experienced and deep team.”

Two Trinity players, sophomore midfielders Darren Yeagle

and Omar Persad, are in the pool for a national team. Sopho-more midfielder Ian Willmot and junior center-midfielder AlexMarks are also expected to play leading roles for the Rocks.Willmot barely missed the cut for the national team, andaccording to Coach Mata, Marks is the best junior in Kentucky.Seniors Clay Talley, Lee Weyland and Derrick Yeagle are teamleaders and possible Division I college prospects.

Like last season, Ballard, St. Xavier, Lexington Catholic andLexington Henry Clay are all expected to be state title con-tenders. Trinity fell 5-4 in overtime to St. Xavier in the 2001Sub-Section 3 final.

CROSS COUNTRYThe Harriers are hoping to improve on their third-place finish atthe 2001 Class 3-A Cross Country Championship last November.

“Our goal is a top-three finish at state,” said interim headcoach Chad Waggoner. “We’ll have to do that with an abundanceof youth on our team — mostly sophomores. We have strongsenior leadership, but this is a very young team.”

Trinity returns three of its seven runners from the 2001 team.Ballard, Butler, Daviess County, South Oldham and St. Xavieralso promise to have strong teams this season.

“St. X is the preseason No. 1, and Daviess County is a closesecond,” said Coach Waggoner. “We’ll face serious and talentedcompetition this season.”

Trinity’s top runners are sophomore Chris Daly, senior ChrisMcCoy and junior Michael Raidt.

GolfHead coach Joe Frederick ’88 is expecting a strong team for the2002 season. Seven golfers return from last year’s team.

“We’re young,” said Coach Frederick, who is also the golf pro atThe Elks in Jeffersonville, Ind. “But our guys have a lot of tourna-ment experience. Our goal is to make it out of the region for the firsttime in 12 years and qualify as a team for the state tournament.”

Ballard, Male and St. Xavier also look to be strong this season. In 2001, the Rocks ended their season with an 8-2 record and athird-place finish at the Region 7 tournament. The Rocks are ledby individual 2002 KIT champion freshman Tyler Current, sophomore Lee Taylor and senior Joe Escola.

Of particular note were his com-ments and memories of his fellow classmate Dave Aberli ’75.Dave is now director of the Office of Student Affairs, and I amsure he will be happy to know that the comments about his careeras a student were shared only with the Alumni.

Many thanks to the Soccer Moms who hosted the day. Amongthe many who helped with set-up and food preparation wereCathy and Gerald O’Connell, Cindy Wilhem and Sharon Zeman-ski. Thanks to all the parents for their support of this game.
