REFORMATION 500 At Trinity, KENT
500 years! A once-in-a-lifetime chance for most of us to delve a bit into the life and
times of Martin Luther and events leading to and from the Reformation!
What happened THEN? What does it mean NOW?
Where do we go from HERE?
Beginning this summer we hope to provide some fun
and insightful opportunities to answer those questions - -
and to pose more!
We hope you’ll join us for many or ALL of the happenings listed on the
next page – all ages welcome! Grades 5-8 will have the option of attending
the adult sessions or youth activities. Under 4th grade will have some option-
al sessions for many of the topics.
SUNDAYS 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the GREAT HALL and NARTHEX and
CLASSROOMS
PIZZA and drinks provided. (Offerings taken) Other goodies provided by
volunteers.

REFORMATION 500
August 13th – Inside Out: The Emotional Luther. Adults will discuss Luther’s issues
of anxiety and depression as well as our continued climate of secrecy regarding such
ailments. Our Parish Health Specialists will help lead this workshop and share time
for questions. Kids will discuss feelings and watch the movie “Inside Out” which
speaks to such issues on their level.
August 27th – The Life and Times of Martin and Katie. An intergenerational event!
We’ll hear what was going on in the world during the Luthers’ lifetimes, experience
food of the time, play some historic games, learn about their daily life including
what they wore and how they went to school. Pr. Betti Hazelton will share her
dramatization of Katie Luther!
September 10th – Luther’s Languages: Latin, German, Greek, and Music! We’ll ex-
plore how Luther changed the church by providing scriptures and services in the
language of the people and learn how much of our current worship is based on what
he chose to keep of the Latin mass! We’ll hear how much Luther believed in peo-
ple singing together – then do just that – hymns, folk and camp songs!
September 24th – The Pope and Politics. Adults and older teens will learn about the
history of the papacy and how Leo X ended up in power and causing such trouble
for ML! Kids will learn what a pope is and a bit about how the church used to have
such a strong control of government.
October 8th – Those 95 Theses! What were they all about anyway? Adults will fo-
cus on Luther’s intent in posting the theses and what they were all about. Kids will
have appropriate sessions on what Luther was about in his teaching, preaching and
writing what today would have probably been on Twitter and Snapchat! And they’ll
explore how the printing press changed the world!
October 22nd – What Does it Mean to Be Lutheran? Appropriate sessions for adults
and youth as we explore the legacy of 500 years. Who are we Lutherans and what
are we supposed to be about doing today?
October 29th – REFORMATION SUNDAY Afternoon round table discussion on
questions brought up throughout these months of learning and exploring, followed
by a celebratory Reformation service and a supper. (TIMES WILL BE DIFFER-
ENT)
8
Adult Sunday School surveys are still available on
the table (they're on gold colored paper). Fill one
out and give it to Jenn or PFid as we look to pro-
vide additional opportunities for adults this coming
'school' year.
Parents Have you been receiving Youth info from Jenn by email? If not sign up to-day! Send a request to [email protected] and keep up on all the

Social Ministry August Notes
The Social Ministry Committee has created a “shopping
list” of suggested items needed in the food pantry. The list
was created based on reviewing the pattern of items select-
ed by those visiting the pantry. Every two weeks we will
share different items for collection to stock the shelves for
the specific items needed. Please understand ALL dona-
tions are welcome regardless of the list shared. In fact, if
there are special sales going on for basic food items, we strongly urge you
to take advantage of those bargains. Most of the patrons need the
very basic and easy to fixf ood items.
In the coming weeks, (August dates noted) we will request on a two week
collection cycle the following items. We offer the list as a convenience to
you as you shop for the pantry:
Peanut butter and jelly (through August 3)
Canned fruit, canned pasta – (August 6 -August 20)
Cereal and Granola bars –( August 20 - September 3)
Flavored microwaveable side dishes (instant pota-
toes, rice and noodles – Lipton, Knorr, Uncle Ben’s
for example
Spaghetti Sauce and Pasta
Canned meats, tuna, soups and stews
Health and beauty products (Shampoo, soap, deodorant)
Bags of Blessings will be distributed on the last Sunday of every month as a
convenient reminder to take to the store as you shop. We appreciate their
return for later distribution. On behalf of all the patrons of the Food Pan-
try, we thank all of you for your generous support, large or small, as each
item donated means so much to the recipients in ways we may never fully
understand. If questions, suggestions or concerns, please share them with
the committee: Dee Bowen, Sue Hardwick, Emily Myers and Gayle Simo-
ne. Blessings to you all.

Pictorial Directory will be coming in the Fall. Picture dates
here at Trinity are scheduled for August 28-29. Aside for your
most perfect picture we also need your most perfect contact in-
formation. Please check the directory listing we have on the
usher’s table for your information.
The Endless Readers group has finished for a few months. We will start up
again in September. We are a group of people interested in reading books and
discussing them and other things. We invite anyone interested to join us on the
third Thursday of the month from 6:15 till about 7:30. Now that is not in stone
because we do change the night occasionally to benefit the participants. Each
month a different person gets to choose a book for all to read . If you start the
book and can’t get into it, come anyway because the others will talk about it
and it might change your mind or present a different point of view. Some of
the things we have done was visit the bookstore downtown Kent, have a Christ-
mas party at Emily Myers house and exchange a book, attended a play at
KSU and had a local author come in and talk. Some of the books we have read
recently include Desperate Horsewives by Janet Fox, The Rosie Project by
Graeme Simsion, Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult, Half Brother by Holly
LeCraw, The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom, Color of Light by Emilie
Richards and The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead . Presently
there are 5 in the group and we represent both services so you get to talk with
some of the members you don’t normally worship with. We would love to
have a few more people so think about joining and keep reading!!!!

As HOT as it is, it is hard to realize December really
isn’t that far away. The calendar pages keep flipping and
pretty soon it is December. That’s the month for Trinity’s
craft fair. The date is December 10 th, 8-1. Crafting a
project takes time so I am letting you know now so you can
get the creative juices flowing. We would like to keep it to
handcrafted items but will accept a few commercial prod-
ucts from members of the congregation. (these will be lim-
ited). In the past we have had knitted and crocheted items, magnets, honey, baked
goods, soaps, paper crafts, greeting cards, jams and jellies, Christmas ornaments,
jewelry, books by local authors and wooden items . Unknown if there will be a
quilt or a raffle. If interested in either of these please let me know. Members of
Trinity, relatives or friends of members are welcome to participate. The space is
about 8 feet including a 7 foot rectangular or round table and chairs. The fee for
the space is a donation of your choice to be used for a church project. We can
handle about 22 vendors in the Great Hall.
If interested please call or email Julianne Dezort at 330-297-0159 or Marie
Meloy at 330-673-7484. Mark the date on your calendar now and please come
and shop for various items for you or for gifts. You will be helping support lo-
cal crafters and giving Trinity funds for projects.
