October-November 2016 Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Hasbrouck Heights, NJ TRINITY TIDINGS For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and self-discipline . . . Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. 2 nd Letter to Timothy 1:6-7, 14 Let me begin this letter to you in the same way that Paul began his letter to Timothy: Every time I pray and whenever I think of you, I give thanks for all the gifts and blessings we share together and that you have shared with me and others so generously. Our celebration of baptism in September brought much joy to me as I hope it did to you. For this reason, I give thanks again for the faith that lives in you and that I know lived in those who shared their faith with you—perhaps it was a grandparent or a parent, even a sibling or possibly a friend. With joy, I give thanks for the ones who planted and nourished the faith within you. Through the month of September, we heard the first letter to Timothy, a young pastor that Paul is mentoring. Through the month of October, we will hear from the second letter to Timothy. In these letters, Paul is encouraging and guiding the development of leadership and faith formation that is driven not by ego or cult of personality, but from a deep spiritual commitment to caring for the souls and needs of the community of faith and those that the community serves. The timing of hearing the message of the second letter, just after we celebrated our baptismal identities and dedicated ourselves anew to our baptismal promises, couldn’t be better for Paul is encouraging us to be bold with God’s gifts. Our Stewardship theme this month is “surprising gifts”—a theme drawn from another of Paul’s pastoral letters to his much loved congregation in Thessalonica. And it’s always a good thing to remember that faith is a gift from God that is entrusted to us. This is the “good treasure” that Paul speaks of. Now, when it comes to investing money, many of us are pretty careful. Most of us don’t have more money than we know what to do with, so we’re cautious about entrusting what we have with an unknown person or institution. But as cautious as many of us are with our money, we may be at times less mindful or careful of how we invest our time and talents—and even less mindful of how we care for our faith and our spiritual lives. Taking Paul’s advice, the first thing we need to do is to give thanks for the gift of God’s grace so that we “rekindle the gift of God”— that is faith, the fire of the Holy Spirit—within us. To “rekindle the gift” means to stir up the grace and faith and love that we have first received. We stir them up by putting them into practice. Worship nourishes and fills us and can almost be thought of as a rehearsal for what we will spend our faith, hope and love doing during the rest of the week—such as passing the peace of Christ, remembering who and whose we are in all our interactions with others, remembering that our call is not to win all arguments but to forgive as we have been forgiven, and to love as we have been loved. We need to come together to hear the Word of life and receive what we are then sent out to gift to others. We stir up the gift of faith through prayer and listening to God’s word and, above all, by staying in touch with the Giver. We are the people of faith together. The gifts God has given us call us into relationship with God, but also one another. This is not only the way that we stir up and rekindle the gifts of God within us; it is also how we “guard the good treasure” within us. So let us celebrate and give thanks for the faith, hope and love rooted in Christ within us! And let me conclude this letter as I began it, by following Paul’s example—God doesn’t want us to be shy or stingy with the gifts he has given us. Keep the special gift of the Holy Spirit ablaze and be bold and loving and wise in pouring your gifts out to bless others. The world needs to be surprised anew by such an outpouring! In the peace and joy of the Lord which is our strength,

For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and self-discipline . . . Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. 2nd Letter to Timothy 1:6-7, 14

Let me begin this letter to you in the same way that Paul began his letter to Timothy: Every time I pray and whenever I think of you, I give thanks for all the gifts and blessings we share together and that you have shared with me and others so generously.

We need to come together to hear the Word of life and receive what we are then sent out to gift to others.

The Sundays of

Pentecost 20, October 2 (Blessing of the Animals at noon) Commit your way to the Lord; put your trust in the Lord. A little faith goes a long way is our Lord’s point in the gospel. A mustard seed’s worth has miraculous potential. The patience, tenacity, and endurance required for the life of faith are the blessings received in water and the word (holy baptism), bread and wine (holy communion), the word read and proclaimed in this assembly. Anticipate them. Receive them with thanksgiving.

Pentecost 21, October 9* *2nd Sunday Family Communion Service at 9:15 AM I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart. It’s a miracle! Multiple miracles are happening in the readings for this morning! The waters of holy baptism have healed us. We have died with Christ and been raised with him. The body and blood of Jesus in holy communion have made us clean. For all this, we have returned to offer thanks. From this place, we are sent on our way rejoicing to share the good news.

Pentecost 22, October 16 My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. Pray always. Do not lose heart. This is the encouragement of the Christ of the gospel today. Persistence in our every encounter with the divine will be blessed. Wrestle with the word. Remember your baptism again and again. Come regularly to Christ’s table. Persistence in our every encounter with the divine will be blessed.

Pentecost 23, October 23 Happy are the people whose strength is in God. Genuine repentance and pretentious piety stand in stark contrast in the gospel and all around us. All creation stands in need of God’s for-giveness. Keep the faith. God’s people—“all who have longed for his appearing”—shall be accounted righteous for Jesus’ sake. Our God is merciful to sinners. For all this, the assembly glorifies God forever.

REFORMATION SUNDAY, October 30—Stewardship Commitment Sunday Surprising Gifts This day we are celebrating God’s surprising gifts, God’s surprising grace. We will reflect on gifts we have received. No matter how small or how big, somewhere in your life you had a surprising gift from God. Just as Zacchaeus long ago was surprised that Jesus was bringing salvation to his house, so we are surprised by God’s coming to us with gifts of comfort and strength.

May God who reached out in love and surprised you with gifts of unending help and confidence, put a fresh heart in you, invigorate your work, enliven your speech. 2nd Thessalonians 2:16-17 (from The Message)

The Sundays of

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY, November 6—Remembrance of All Saints

Rev. Carol Brighton, Guest Preacher Sing the Lord’s praise in the assembly of the faithful. In Holy Baptism, God makes saints out of sinners. In Holy Communion, God forgives the sins of all the saints. In the assembly today, we give thanks for all the saints “who from their labors rest,” who have fought the good fight, who have gained the crown. In the same breath, we petition our God for the strength to hear and to heed the admonition of the Lord Jesus in today’s gospel. Recalling that we have been sealed by the Spirit and sustained by the Savior’s body and blood, we keep on keeping on as God gives us breath, to the praise of God’s glory.

Pentecost 26, November 13* *2nd Sunday Family Communion Service at 9:15 AM In righteousness will the Lord judge the world. The end is near. There is no doubt about it. The warnings are dire. The tone of today’s texts is ominous. But the baptized know how to live in the “meantimes.” The baptized are strengthened for the living of these days in word and sacrament. The baptized rally around the invitation of the apostle: “Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.”

The Reign of Christ Sunday, November 20 I will be exalted among the nations. Jeremiah’s promise of the execution of “justice and righteousness in the land” finds ironic fulfillment in the execution of Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. It appears so utterly contradictory that the king should be crucified with the criminal. This victory appears for all the world as ignominious defeat. Yet, through the gate of death, our Lord opens the door to paradise.

ADVENT I, November 27 Watching and Waiting The new church year begins with a wake-up call: Christ is coming soon! In today’s readings, both Paul and Jesus challenge us to wake from sleep, for we know neither the day nor hour of the Lord’s coming. Isaiah proclaims the day when God will gather all people on the holy mountain and there will be no more war or suffering. Though we vigilantly watch for the promised day of salvation, we wait for what we already have: Christ comes among us this day as the word and meal that strengthens our faith in the promises of God.

Blessing of the Animals and Commemoration of St. Francis Sunday, October 2 Noon—Front Lawn Burton Avenue

BRING YOUR PETS!

St. Francis of Assisi is remembered not only as a friend of animals, but primarily as a renewer of the church, urging the church to be faithful to the Gospel. Francis, the son of a wealthy cloth merchant, renounced his wealth and future inheritance and devoted himself to the poor. He said that all followers of Christ had the task to preach the Gospel and to “use words if necessary.”

In commemoration of St. Francis, please join us on Sunday, October 2, on the front lawn at noon and bring your pets for a brief, but maybe raucous, special Blessing of the Animals Service.

2nd Sunday Family Communion returns Sunday, October 9 at 9:15 AM This year the informal, family-friendly worship service returns with some musical enhancement from our new Director of Music Ministries, Dwight Weaver. In addition to vocal leadership from Pastor Susan, new member Danielle Kida will help support our praise with her voice and by accompanying us with her flute. The service will continue to be a laid-back worship style, easy to sing music and Holy Communion for God’s children of all ages. Confirmation and Re:Form students will be introduced to the congregation and will receive their study Bibles at the service in October.

Come all you people, come and praise the most high!

REFORMATION SUNDAY, October 30—Stewardship Commitment Sunday Surprising Gifts Story Exchange

May God who reached out in love and surprised you with gifts of unending help and confidence, put a fresh heart in you, invigorate your work, enliven your speech. 2nd Thessalonians 2:16-17 (from The Message)

This Reformation Sunday, we are celebrating God’s surprising gifts and God’s surprising grace. We will reflect on gifts we have received. No matter how small or how big, somewhere in your life you had a surprising gift from God.

Pastor Susan and the Stewardship Ministry Team invite you to consider sharing a story about a time when you received a surprising gift from God. We will use your stories in a variety of ways—some will appear as features in Pastor Susan’s sermon on Reformation Sunday, some will be featured in the Weekly Tidings or will be included in a Surprising Gifts reflection video in October. Sign your name or remain anonymous. Just write your story down and place it in the offering plate on Sunday morning or in Pastor Susan’s church mailbox.

A new Confirmation curriculum from Sparkhouse . . .

Fearless Faith Formation Hands-on investigative learning that leads to deep engagement with the Bible, church history, and Lutheran theology.

Problem–based learning helps students answer the question, "So what?" Problem–based learning allows students to discover for themselves the history and richness of the Bible, God, and faith. Students are invited to bring their questions and curiosity to every class.

Changes the way students think about faith and the Bible. Rather than faith being handed over as an established set of facts to be learned and memorized, it’s presented as a path of growth and discovery. That’s an experience that will stay with them long after they leave class.

Student and Parent Orientation to Confirmation: Monday, October 3, at 7 PM. Confirmation Class will be presented to Congregation on Sunday, October 9. Confirmation Classes will resume for 7th/8th Grade students on Mondays at 4 PM beginning October 10.

SOMETHING NEW . . . Pre-Confirmation Class for 5th/6th Grade Students A fun introduction to some important and interesting people and their stories in the Bible. This is a one-year class designed as a preparation for beginning Confirmation studies in 7th Grade.

*In October, we will discuss Salome—the mother of James and John and the wife of Zebedee. Salome asked a favor of Jesus. Is it wrong to ask favors for our children? Do mothers always know best? We all want the best for ourselves, our children, family and friends, just as Salome did. Salome, the wife of Zebedee, is most remembered for her pride-full request, yet Salome moved beyond her mistake and grew as a disciple. Her life gives us the confidence that we can change. We can rebound with courage just as Salome did after Jesus’ criticism of her mistaken request.

The Joys of Christmas

WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) will be participating in Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child, aka "The Shoe Box Project," again this year. Through the end of October, we w ill be collecting items to fill shoe boxes for children all around the world. You may pick up a decorated shoe box at Holy Trinity or you may choose to use and decorate your own shoe box (please wrap the top and bottom separately so it can be easily opened). Boxes should be filled with any of the suggested items listed in the brochure found either in the box or on the table in the lobby; or, simply just donate any of the appropriate items and let WELCA do the rest. If you decide to fill a box, please be sure to indicate whether the box is for a BOY or a GIRL and the age category, 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14 years of age, using the available labels. All boxes and/or items should be turned in by October 30. WELCA will be preparing the boxes on November 10. Note: The total number of boxes donated in 2015/ 16 internationally was 11,213,010. They were distributed in over 100 countries and, in just the last five years, over 1 million children have prayed to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior through Operation Christmas Child’s follow-up discipleship program, The Greatest Journey. So, be creative, think outside the box — put the items in a shoe box or give them to WELCA and make a child smile!

TO THOSE IN NEED

Summer is finally over and school is back in session. Thanks to your generosity, Holy Trinity ‘s Women’s ministries provided more than 30 filled backpacks to Lutheran Social Services for NJ children at risk or in need. Now, hard as it is to believe, winter will be here before we know it. With the coming of winter, the needs of those exposed to the elements become paramount once again. During the months of October and November, we will be collecting new hats and scarves, either handmade or purchased, for men or women. Some will be given to Seafarers International for their Christmas gifts to asylum seekers and seamen alone at sea for the holidays. Others will be distributed to the homeless in Jersey City at the Longest Night Memorial Service in December. This annual event commemorates those members of the homeless community who have lost their lives to the daily struggle of life on the streets. It also helps to remind those who continue to struggle with winter and long cold nights that they are not alone. Sometimes the smallest gifts can make the biggest difference.

GOD’S WORK, OUR HANDS — making a difference in ways both large and small!

Holy Trinity made a splash as we celebrated Baptism on Rally Day Sunday, September 18 . . . Inspired by special music throughout the service, Holy Trinity sang out the hymn “Baptized and Set Free” as we passed the light of Christ and publically affirmed our baptism. Blessings and prayers were said over all our teachers, students and even some backpacks. Immediately after the service, we gathered for lunch in the fellowship hall. Right after the "indoor" picnic, the children gathered for a special treasure hunt created by Dianna Mammone that included secret symbols revealed by watercolor painting. Then it was time for giant bubbles and throwing water balloons. Everyone went home just a little bit wet.

Welcome New Members!

It is with joy and thanksgiving that we welcome this new family on the occasion of Thomas’ Baptism and Danielle’s becoming a member of our Holy Trinity family on September 11.
