On May 13, 1867, the Deutsche EvangelischeLutherischeDreieinigkeitsGeme inde (German Evangelical Lutheran Trinity Church) was founded and incorporated by 20 charter members, originally from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Bainbridge, Michigan. The first pastor to serve Trinity was Rev. Johann Freiertag. In less than four months these original members built and dedicated their first church building at a cost of $857.21. There is no way these forward thinking and faithful Lutherans could have envisioned the next 150 years. It is equally hard for us to look back and imagine what life was like in those early days of Trinity Lutheran Church of St. Joseph, MI. In 1867 the United States was just beginning the period of Reconstruction, two years after the Civil War had ended. The president was Andrew Johnson. The population of St. Joseph was around 2900 and it was still 25 years away from being incorporated as a city. In the same year, Nebraska became the 37th state in the Union and Alaska was purchased from Russian at the cost of about 2 cents per acre. The first intercontinental railroad was still two years away. Alfred Nobel invented dynamite and Joseph Lister developed the first antiseptic used in surgery. Notable authors of that year included: Victor Hugo, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Lewis Carroll, Jules Verne, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Karl Marx and Horatio Alger. 1867 was also the year that saw the births of Cy Young, Wilbur Wright, Frank Lloyd Wright, S.S. Kresge, and Scott Joplin. People lived without electricity, indoor plumbing, and automobiles. 150 years later the United States gained 13 more states, endured the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan War, Iraq War, and the war on terrorism. Homes and churches enjoy such modern conveniences as electricity, indoor plumbing, telephones, gas heating and central air conditioning, computer technology, electric PA systems, overhead projection screens, automobile transportation, to name just a few. It is a very different world today than it was when Trinity was first founded. Over those years thousands of members have worshiped at Trinity and attended our Christian Day School. Our third and current church building was dedicated 92 years ago, and our current school about 64 years ago. There has been a lot of changes in our country, our community and our church over those years. Pastors, teachers and members come and go, but one thing remains the same - the goodness and grace of our faithful God, who is the same yesterday, today and forever. As we celebrate our third Jubilee this year we will be reflecting on where we have been, where we are and by the grace of God, where we will be going. As much as we may be tempted to focus on ourselves and even take some pride in our history, all glory and honor belongs to God. He is the One who has blessed us in the past and still does today. He is the One whose Son gave up His life on the cross so that we might have forgiveness and salvation. These gifts of God's grace are dispensed at Trinity today, as they have been for the past 150 years through Baptism, the Sacrament of the Altar and the preaching and teaching of the Word. This is really what it is all about, the proclamation of the Gospel through Word and Sacrament. This is why the founding fathers started this congregation and it is why still exit today. We do not know what the future will bring for our dear old Trinity. We do not know what the future will be for our country or for any of us as individuals. But, we do know this, God is faithful and He who holds the future in His hands will also hold us. We have a blessed history and by God's grace, we look forward to a bright future, for His love and mercy endures forever.

Let's explore together The Revelation of Jesus Christ. Thismagnificent last book of our Holy Scripture is rich withprophecy, promise and meaning. Some might say The Book ofRevelation appears unclear. It is unclear due to our 21stcentury limitations. However it was very clear to the 1stcentury Christian with a Jewish background. Let's begin anadventure in a study of Revelation on Sunday, September 18that 9:15 am in the fellowship hall. In an exciting, faith buildingexercise, we will week by week use visuals, colors, numbers, hymns and outlines to unlock the code to understanding thisgreat work of inspired literature.LEADER: Tom BirdLOCATION: Fellowship HallTIME: 9:15 – 10:15am

Few things in life can be more intimidating that taking on therole of fatherhood. Whether it's a planned event or one oflife's little surprises it demands our full attention and acommitment to put our all into it. Using various study guides,we will address the challenges in being loving and Christ-likefathers to our families, especially in a society that frequentlyportrays dads as buffoons and ill-equipped to care forthemselves, much less their kids. Along with time in God’sWord, we will share life together. What were some of ourfatherhood ‘wins’ since we last met? How can we celebratethose? What were some of our fatherhood ‘losses’? How canwe learn from those?LEADER: Pastor Anthony GerberLOCATION: Lighthouse Café, Ministry CenterTIME: 1st & 3rd Tuesdays, 6:00-7:00 a.m.

ECCA new year is so much fun. We plan for the future, weget excited for things to come. The same is true in theEarly Childhood Center. We have just finishedcelebrating the birth of our Lord. We had a beautifulChristmas program with our Preschool children and theirfamilies. What a blessing to hear those little voices singabout the birth of our Savior. Staying Connected in PrayerMatthew 26 recounts Jesus in Gethsemane, praying that the cup of suffering could pass fromhim. Three times he asked this same prayer, and each time, he closed with "Not my will, butThine be done."

Anyone who has prayed fervently and for a long time for someone's healing, for theirsalvation, for the solution to a problem, or for any other desire within God's will, but sees noapparent resolution or sees the opposite of what is being prayed for, may come to wonder whatthe purpose of such prayer, any prayer, is.

One of my favorite words in Greek is a word that means to bear up under a load, the way aheavily-laden donkey would. That word is hypoménō. Sometimes, prayer in the face of suchunknowns and perhaps past sorrowful outcomes feels like walking under heavy burdens for along time. This is when we must bear up under, recognize that God is God and we are not, andrest evermore fervently in the knowledge of His desire for our best, trusting no matter what.

Years ago, and again more recently, things have taken place for which it seems my prayers hadno answers, or at least not the answers I had been laboring in prayer for. It brought to mindJames Dobson's book called When God doesn't Make Sense. I would have to go back and readthe book again to remember many of the details, but there was one thing he said that madethe difference. He reminded his readers that Christians live in the middle of an invisible war aswe are told in Romans. And while we do not necessarily understand the reasons for the waythings are, it matters which side we choose in this eternal battle. Even if we think we are notchoosing, we are choosing. And it matters which side we choose. So as Jesus said in the gardenof Gethsemane, "Not my will, Father, but Thine be done."

SLEEPING MAT MINISTRY

Christ & Coffee -- "ACTS"

The theme of Acts is "the spread of the Gospel to all the known world". Ladies, imagine yourselfstepping away from the craziness and taking the time to spend with other Christian women in arelaxing atmosphere with coffee or tea and refilling your well by being fed with the very Word ofGod. I invite you to take the time to join us. Childcare is provided.Leader: Debby MiskillLocation: Lower Lounge (Ministry Center)Day: WednesdaysTime: 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.

Professional renovator Tish Amble decided long ago that staying in one place is about as excitingas peeling wallpaper from plaster. So before the paint in each newly transformed home is dry, Tishis researching her next move. This time she chooses a small town in Michigan with a dilapidatedVictorian that challenges her imagination. But Tish's idyllic small-town dream fizzles when shefinds more in the creepy basement than what was revealed on the seller's disclosure-what lookslike traces of foul play. With a hovering police officer living next door and a possible love interestjust two doors down, Tish has her hands full. Will she discover the truth before it's too late?Leader: Tracie BerghausLocation: Tracie's HomeTime: 10:15Date: 3rd Saturday of the Month

The Sleeping Mat Ministry is looking for volunteers to assist in cutting the plastic bags, assemblingthe bags into plarn (plastic yarn), and crocheting the plarn into the mats. Once a mat is completedthey will be distributed into our community to the homeless. This is something that can be done athome or you are invited to come to the plarn group which meets the 2nd and 4th Monday of themonth from 2:00-4:00 in the Lighthouse Cafe . The most important thing that we all can do iskeep those that are homeless in our prayers. For more information please contact Debby Miskill atthe church office.

January is Glaucoma Awareness month. Glaucoma is aleading cause of vision loss and blindness in the UnitedStates. People are often unaware that glaucoma has nosymptoms in its early stages.

If detected early, before noticeable vision loss occurs, glaucoma can usually be controlled and severe visionloss can often be prevented. Vision that is lost fromglaucoma cannot be restored.

Glaucoma is a group of diseasesthat can damage the optic nerve in the eye. The opticnerve is the part of the eye that sends electricalimpulses for sight to the brain. If left untreated, glaucoma can cause permanent vision loss orblindness.

Clear fluid flows in and out ofa small space at the front of the eye and keeps thetissues in the eye healthy. If this fluid drains too slowly,it puts pressure on the optic nerve and can causeglaucoma.

Often, there areno symptoms at first. Vision stays normal and there isno pain. But as the disease gets worse, side vision maybegin to fail. Objects straight ahead may be clear, butobjects to the side may not be seen. Over time, with notreatment, people with glaucoma may not be able tosee objects straight ahead.

Anyone can get glaucoma, but people at higher risk forglaucoma are:

African Americans age 40 and older

All adults age 60 and older, especiallyHispanics/Latinos

Those who have family members with glaucoma

Diabetes

Hypertension

Previous eye injury

An eye care professionalcan determine whether a person has glaucomathrough a comprehensive dilated eye exam. During thisexam, drops are put into the eyes to enlarge the pupils. The eye care professional is then able to see more of

the inside of the eye to check for signs of damage to theoptic nerve. A dilated eye exam is important becausescreening for eye pressure alone is not enough to detectglaucoma.

Has diabetes

Has a family history of glaucoma

Is an African American age 50 or older

Is a Hispanic age 65 or older

For more information on this Medicare benefit, visit:www.nei.nih.gov/Medicare.

Not necessarily. Increased eye pressure means you are atrisk for glaucoma, but does not mean you have thedisease. A person has glaucoma only if the optic nerve isdamaged. If you have increased eye pressure but nodamage to the optic nerve, you do not have glaucoma. However, you are at risk. Follow the advice of your eyecare professional.

Glaucoma cannot be cured, buttreatment can help control the pressure in your eye anddelay further damage to the optic nerve. The mostcommon treatments include:

Medications, such as eye drops or pills

Laser surgery

Traditional surgery

Treatment usually begins with medication and, if needed, laser surgery. Traditional surgery is usually for patientswhose eye pressure cannot be controlled with medicationor laser surgery.

Early detection and treatmentare the best ways to control glaucoma before it causespermanent vision loss. If you are at higher risk forglaucoma, be sure to get a comprehensive dilated eyeexam every one to two years.

To protect your vision from other risk factors, follow yourdoctor's instructions for managing diabetes andhypertension. And be sure to use protective eyewear in theworkplace and during sports and recreational activities.

For more information, please contact the National EyeInstitute (NEI) by email at [email protected] or visitwww.nei.nih.gov.

We are just concluding our season of Christmascelebration surrounding the birth of our Lord andSavior, Jesus Christ, and moving toward our Eastercelebration of His death and resurrection. These arecelebrations typically involving family and friends andinclude attending church services, eating, sharing ofgifts, followed by more eating, and simply spendingcherished time with loved ones, who finally have thetime and inclination to do so.

The celebrating is certainly fun, entertaining andwaistline expanding. It allows us much needed timeto rest, unwind and decompress a little from our busylives. The one thing that I think is missing, and I amspeaking for myself as much as I am making ageneral observation, is more of a focus on the'reason for the season'. The very 'person' we shouldbe focused on is often relegated to playing thirdstring and riding the bench, when He should beplaying a starring role in our lives. What's more, Heshould be on our minds and in our hearts not justduring these special and holy times of the year, but atall times.

We don't always offer our Lord (or our coach, mentor, teacher, pastor, parent, child, spouse, relative, friendor stranger) an attitude of gratitude, a prayer ofthanksgiving or a word of endearment. The Lord hasblessed us with everything we have, everything weneed and all that we are. He has done so selflessly inthe guise of many, perhaps not always recognizable, but there none-the-less meeting our every need andwalking beside us always.

Those we hold most dear – He is responsible forputting them in our lives. The material blessings weenjoy every day – He is responsible for those too. Thetrials and tribulations He uses to refine and humbleus – yep, He can take credit for those as well.

As good stewards how should we respond to God'slimitless generosity and love? With hearts

overflowing with love for one another as He hascommanded, with willing hands to do the goodworks He has laid before us and with tithing ofour treasure as He has taught us in scripture. Allsimple to understand not always easy for us todo.

Would you please join me in a prayer:

Heavenly Father, as we look forward to anotheryear in your care with all the multitude ofblessings you bestow upon us each and everyday, we THANK YOU for being present in ourlives and for providing us with everything weneed and more! Help us to always have anattitude of gratitude. Help us to take a momenteach day to say THANK YOU to you and to othersalong the way. Help us to recognize andacknowledge your presence in others, who touchour lives daily. Continue to teach us your waysand grant us a servant heart that we mightaccomplish your good works. Place us in the livesof others that we might be your light in their lives.Help us to love one another as you have lovedus. Make us into cheerful givers, and guide us togive back a portion of all that you have given tous. We ask all of these things in the name of yourson, Jesus Christ. AMEN!

O God, O Lord, of Heaven and Earth (LSB 834)

Our fatal will to equal Thee, We housed us in this house of doom,Our rebel will wrought day and night. Where death had scope and royal room,We seized and used in prideful spite Until Thy servant, Prince of Peace,Thy wondrous gift of liberty. Breached all its walls for our release. (Verse 2)

The second verse of this hymn begins on a realistic, if not darker, observation on mankind.Where we read in verse one how God had the highest of intentions for His creation, man'swill has nothing but the lowest intentions for his fate. In fact, our corrupted will works tochallenge God every time and in every way it can in its vain attempt to "equal" Him. Thevery liberty God gave man as a way of showing Him our love and thankfulness isdeliberately twisted to lift his own pride. And what does all this "prideful spite"earn for us?

Man has trapped himself inside a "house of doom" where death has taken control of the"royal' chambers meant for God Himself. Left to ourselves it is death, not God, who wouldrule our hearts and lives. It was always death's plan to lead us in our delusions to his darkkingdom, but from the beginning God's had His own plans for us.

He has sent His own Son, the "Prince of Peace", as a servant to take back God's owncreation. The "house of doom" becomes a castle under attack with death trying to defendthe property he has stolen, but he is no match for the Prince of Peace. The "walls" havebeen "breached" and we've been ransomed from death's dominion. In the end, even deathis no match for God's Son.
