As We Gather: Our Savior Jesus Christ told us He was going to His Father. The first disciples saw Him do this, actually leaving them and us behind, ascending through the clouds. But they and we are to know His “going” is not exactly His “leaving.” For He has not left us alone as orphans. We are to know that His real presence with us is now not by sight but by faith through His Sacraments. It is His voice we hear from now on, saying, “I forgive you all your sins.” By faith we know that Holy Baptism and Holy Communion are not primarily something we do only to remember Him but the Means by which He washes us and fills us now with His righteousness. Through it all, we are formed by His cross, enduring suffering for His sake with the great and sure hope that, in the end, we will be with Him forever. Please rise if able. INVOCATION AND OPENING VERSICLES LSB, 229 P: In the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: O Lord, open my lips, C: and my mouth will declare Your praise. P: Make haste, O God, to deliver me; C: make haste to help me, O Lord. C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it

was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Praise to you O Christ. Alleluia.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION LSB, 167 P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our

sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(We meditate on our confession of sins.)

P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and

unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us,

renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P: Almighty God in His mercy … the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Please be seated. FIRST READING Acts 1:1–11

1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.

(The Christ Candle is extinguished.) 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. SECOND READING 1 Peter 4:12–16; 5:6–11

12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 14 If

you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. … 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Please rise if able. Holy Gospel Matthew 20:20-28

P: The Holy Gospel according to St Matthew the twentieth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord!

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” 22 Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” 23 He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” 24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH P: Guard Your people, O Lord, and grant us unity of faith and singleness of heart as we come

to You in prayer. Lord, You have promised not to abandon Your people but to be with us always. Grant us grace to hear Your Word with faith and receive Your Holy Sacrament with repentant hearts, and to keep what we hear and receive upon our lips in holy lives. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. P: Lord, You have delivered the saints from fiery trial and raised up the martyr from the

darkness of death to everlasting life. Give us courage, that we may give bold witness to the truth in our own day and proclaim Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. P: Lord, You have pledged to us Your Spirit and promised to supply Your Church with pastors

who will preach and teach Your Word. Bless and protect the efforts of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod; President Harrison, First Vice-President Lang, District President Brege, Regional Vice-President Stuckwisch, Circuit Visitor Boshoven, and all of Trinity’s leadership. Baptism and faith. Until we are with You in Your presence forevermore, guard us against the devil who prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking those whom he might devour. Grant us the power to resist him and trust in You without fear. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.
