WHAT’S ALL THIS BACK-IN-THE-PEWS STUFF I KEEP HEARING ABOUT???

If you are fairly new to Trinity, you may wonder at the

phrase. Does it mean that everyone is coming back to

church after summer vacation? That would seem a safe

assumption but no, the celebration dates back a while in

the church’s history and really has nothing to do (at least

not directly) with summer attendance.

You may or may not remember when very few buildings

had air conditioning. Well, Trinity was one without and in

the summer the sanctuary could be pretty uncomfortable.

It was decided to meet for services in the parish hall

where windows could be opened and a nice cross-breeze

cooled the air.

At the end of the really hot weather and after the long

Labor Day week-end (and Hancock County Fair), it was

time to return to the sanctuary or go ‘back-in-the-pews’.

That time was celebrated with a picnic and family fun day.

It also signaled the re-start of Sunday School classes and

choir and chime choir practices.

Several years ago when the sanctuary was remodeled

and air conditioning installed, the end of the project

coincided with the time the celebration was typically held

so again, the congregation got back in the pews.

And so…the tradition continues even though there is no

literal return to the pews. It is a time for the church family

to come together and celebrate Trinity and each other.

This year the picnic will be held on Sunday, September

13th

following a combined 9:30 worship service. For more

details, see the invitation on page 5.

Music Notes from Parker Maas

Our music ministry is excited to awaken from our slumber and begin to enrich our services once again. We welcome all new members Sunday mornings in the parish hall at 8:30. Choir rehearsal will resume on September 6

th, with our first service on September 13

th for

Back-in-the-Pews Sunday. Thank you for all of your continued support in this ministry! (More) reasons to join the choir…

-You can sing the melody but can’t read music? Two words – soprano section. -It’s true – if you are a tenor, you’re a babe magnet! -It is good for your health – improves multi-tasking skills, math, memory, and focus! -2000 years of liturgical music tradition can’t be wrong. -Intellectual stimulation – when you make music you are using both sides of your brain. -You never have to worry about what to wear.

PARISH PICNIC Time again for our annual Parish Picnic – Sunday, September 13th after the service.

Where has the summer gone? School is back in session and we’re getting back into our regular routines. All this means that it is time for our PARISH PICNIC!!!

We are again going to celebrate in our own back yard!! Bring some outdoor games for all and a dish to share! There is a sign-up sheet in the parish hall so that we know how many will be there and what you are planning to bring. The Social committee will supply meats and any needed condiments. We will probably begin serving at about 11:15 so that gives everybody time to chat and play a game.

Please come and join the fun!

Trinity Episcopal Church is . . . a welcoming community that is accepting of others who are different. …a place to experience genuine relationships that help us grow. …people who volunteer to reach out into the community. …people who value tradition, music, and prayer

in their worship.

VESTRY REPORT The subject which most people have asked about is the search for a new priest. The Search

Committee completed all the questions and compiled a Community Portfolio by the end of May.

About five weeks later the Parish Profile was put out on the new website where it can be accessed

by anyone including potential applicants. I have talked with the Diocesan placement officer,

Percy Grant, and she says that she is gathering names for Trinity. Anne Yug has said that the

committee can expect a list of candidates from the Diocese about the end of September. Now the

committee is working on preliminary interview questions, and, when we have the names of

candidates, most interviews will be conducted by Skype to eliminate overmuch travel expense.

Many thanks to the Search Committee.

In the meantime, celebrants have been lined up for Eucharist every Sunday through October.

We are working on November and December now. Coming up, September 13 is Back-in-the-

Pews Sunday with our in-house picnic. After that it will be time to start up our classes and to plan

for next year. Deke Roberts has kindly agreed to be the chair of the Stewardship Committee. The

Outreach Committee reports that more food and volunteers are needed.

The Vestry voted to refinish the floor of the Parish Hall at the beginning of November before it

is permanently damaged. When the refinishing happens, it was proposed that all but one of the

pews sitting over the radiators around the outside of the room be removed. It was thought likely

that heavy solid walnut pews have a significant value. An estimate will be sought, and members

of the parish will have first bid.

The condition and the necessity of the downstairs restrooms was discussed. The ground floor

restrooms are more accessible and used more often. The Vestry voted not to spend money on the

downstairs restrooms but rather to cap off the plumbing and use the space for storage.

The restoration of the Annex is continuing. Upstairs some walls have been removed to make

fewer and larger rooms. Downstairs the floors will be leveled, so that no one will trip going from

one room to another which is an inch higher or lower. The insurance paid for all new windows

upstairs, and the Vestry is investigating the cost of installing matching windows downstairs.

Lighting fixtures and floor coverings have been chosen as well. Thank goodness for the church

insurance company!

If you have questions or concerns, please let one of the wardens or Vestry members know.

Jim Miller, Senior Warden

Christ in a Stranger's Guise

I met a stranger yesterday...

Christ is a Stranger's Guise (CSG), Trinity's committee charged with welcoming visitors and newcomers while sustaining current members is back and rejuvenated! Over the summer we have been meeting monthly to make plans and do some restructuring all while keeping in mind our original mission!

We have joined forces with the Social Committee as many of our activities overlap. As part of this, we've taken over responsibility for making sure our monthly parish breakfasts continue with both cooks and attendees. Ginny Lee and the O'Sullivans hosted the two held this summer, while Bob Brater and Dave Unkefer are in charge for September. There's a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board for cooks. Check Sunday bulletins and the bulletin board for information on the Back-in-the-Pews celebration coming up on September 13th.

We are, of course, continuing to have greeters at Sunday services. Early in September, CSG will have a ‘refresher’ session for both current greeters and anyone interested in this welcoming ministry. Thanks to Nancy Abbey, we once again have bread (and green bags to put the loaves in) to give to visitors. The loaves are available in the freezer in the kitchen.

An exciting new activity will get underway this fall. Sue Ann Sandusky will start interviewing parish members to compile ‘oral histories’ which will provide valuable stories of Trinity and its members over the years. Thanks to Gloria Wolph, we are sending birthday, anniversary and thinking-of-you cards to parishioners. Newly refurbished Children's Activity Bags are now available in the nave, thanks to Rita Roberts.

On Saturday, October 3rd, Trinity will host Blessing of the Animals. Elizabeth Kelly has graciously agreed to hold the service, which will take place on our corner lawn. Mark your calendars, tell your friends (and pets!) and stay tuned for further details.

And last, but certainly not least given our mission of welcoming visitors and newcomers while sustaining current members, it is not impossible to see a CSG roster comprised of all who attend Trinity! For more information, please ask Chairperson Ginny Lee.

...who might be Christ in a stranger's guise.
