Holy Spirit ever living as the church’s very life; Holy Spirit, ever striving through us in a ceaseless strife;
Holy Spirit, ever forming in the church the mind of Christ: You we praise with endless worship for your gifts and fruits un-priced.
(ELW # 582 stanza 2)
There is no doubt but what the Spirit is at work supplying leadership, inspiration and direction for
the mission and ministries of Trinity!
It is a joy to continue celebrating and giving thanks to God for our shared mission in the Gospel
with Pastor Matt and Cantor John as they now take leave for their respective ministries in Chicago.
With this, we are also moving forward in faith, planning for the ministry needs of this Fall and for
the mission of Trinity in the foreseeable future.
Informed by the Congregational Assessment Tool (The CAT Survey) that our congregation took
during the past year, the Council has acted on two specific matters. The first was to focus on the
area of ministry holding the congregation’s greatest approval, namely Trinity’s worship life.
To affirm and continue strengthening our worship life, the Council acted immediately during mid-
summer months by appointing both a Cantor Search Committee and a Pastoral Call Committee. As
has already been publicized, the Cantor search has been completed and we are happy to welcome
on Sunday, October 23, Trinity’s next Cantor, Mr. Mark Mummert. (For more information about
Mark Mummert, please go to the Trinity website at trinityworc.org.)

The Call Committee has interviewed a pastoral candidate and has forwarded the candidate’s name
to the Congregation Council. Within days, the Council and Call Committee will meet with the
candidate and make a decision whether to forward the candidate’s name to the congregation for a
special meeting and vote. The congregation will be notified accordingly.
While all of this has been unfolding, the Council also focused on what the CAT survey indicated is
our congregation’s greatest desire, namely growth in youth and family ministry. With thanks to
God and following discussions related to shared vision and goals, Trinity has welcomed Ms. Jena
Hardy to serve as Director of Youth and Family Ministry. (For more information about Jena Hardy,
please go to the Trinity website at trinityworc.org.) With a background in teaching and a depth of
experience in working with children, youth and families in both parish and synod settings, Jena
brings many gifts and insights for building relationships and sharing faith. Jena’s work is
contracted through December of 2016, and will be revisited as 2017 budget considerations move
forward.
Additionally, during recent months, the Finance Committee has been working with the Alario
accounting firm in auditing Trinity’s financial books and putting into place a new set of financial
procedures. Reporting on these matters will be forthcoming and a full review of the process and
its results will be presented at the Regular Annual Meeting in January 2017. The Finance and
Personnel Committees have also been working throughout the summer to determine sustainable
compensation packages for all new staff members.
Summer has also brought the move into our alternate worship space (Jeppson Hall) while
construction and renovation efforts proceed in the Trinity Nave. Feedback has been spirited and
positive with our congregation delighting in the proximity of worshipers, as well as the improved
sound in that setting.
Continue to pray for the life and mission of Trinity Lutheran Church. God promises, from age to
age, to raise us up to new ministries and ways of serving. Thanks be to God for the multitude of
gifts and graces that we all bring, and that add to the mix of being Christ’s body for the sake of the
world! + Susan K. Nachtigal, Pastor
Holy Spirit, ever working through the church’s ministry; quick’ning, strength’ning, and absolving, setting captive sinners free;
Holy Spirit, ever binding age to age and soul to soul in communion never ending, you we worship and extol.
(ELW # 582 stanza 3)

CONGREGATION COUNCIL UPDATE
Jessica Sutherland, President
The Council met on September 12. We thanked Cantor John for his service on the
Council and enjoyed some of Susan Brown’s homemade cookies to mark the occasion.
The Pastoral Call Committee (Andrew Gingras, Carol Hartz, Tim Horan, Jennifer
O’Connor, Karen Short, Maureen Stake (chair), and Pastor Nachtigal) have begun their
work and have met with Pastor Sara Anderson, Associate to the Bishop of the New
England Synod. Please keep them in your prayers as they begin their discernment.
Scott Baeder, representing the Finance Committee, presented the Council with an
update on the status of the 2015 financial review and the procedural audit that is
underway by Robert C. Alario, CPA, PC. Scott provided a draft 2015 Financial Report
which is currently under review by the Finance Committee. The procedural audit
continues; we have enlisted a bookkeeper who has been very helpful in
aligning/consolidating various QuickBook accounts. Our assistant Treasurer, Rich
Grusell, has assumed a more active role in helping our Treasurer, Jon Hill, with the
financial operations at Trinity. The Finance Committee will also start crafting the 2016
budget.
Scott, at the behest of the Treasurer, also presented the August financial report. Trinity
had a strong net ordinary income (income minus expenses) of $26,488 through August;
however, we are still having some accounts payable debt from 2015 to resolve.
Several property matters (TLC Preschool playground, Education Wing windows,
cable hook-up, and LED lighting in offices and classrooms) remain under discussion.
In coming months, the Council will work with our building manager, TLC Preschool
Director, Property and Finance Committees to prioritize these projects and to
determine budgets and timelines.
We are looking forward to working with the Stewardship Ministry Team as the fall
campaign is planned and executed.

On the Faith in Action front, we thank the Tabitha Circle for another successful “Scones
for Schools” endeavor. The Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Ministry Team also had a fun
and faith-filled morning at the Worcester Pride parade and the Council finalized
details surrounding the annual congregational picnic (with a bake sale fundraiser for
Vera Cunningham’s NEADs service dog). Several of our youth and their chaperones
also returned from a great weekend at the Hammonasset at Calumet gathering. Trinity
members have also participated in the Reach the Beach Campaign to raise funds for
Camp Calumet’s various ministries and have also represented us at local Habitat for
Humanity projects.
Our next regularly scheduled Council meeting is on October 10 at 7 p.m. All are
welcome to attend.
Considering Another Ascentria Placement: The U.S. government has recently
decided that our country might accept 110,000 new refugees from around the world in
2017. Trinity had a good response last year in helping the al-Mutafa family settle in
Worcester through Ascentria. Dave and Bev Hobbs are willing to coordinate the help
needed for a new family. So far Trinity has not made any commitments for the future
so there is no information about the size or what any new family would be like. The
Hobbs are interested in knowing if others in the Trinity family are interested in helping
with a new family and if you have any ideas for this ministry. Please let Dave and Bev
know of your interest in church or by email at [email protected].

“The Lord, your God, is in your midst...the Lord will rejoice over you with gladness,
and will renew you with love...”
Work has begun on the cleaning of brick walls and limestone
columns in the Nave. This involves the application of a wet
solution to the masonry. After a short time, the solution is rinsed
off with a water spray. In addition to the removal of the pews, electrical outlets and lights and
the Noack organ were covered over to prevent water damage. As part of this cleaning, the old,
non-working speaker arrays at the Chancel steps were removed. The small holes in the wall
where the speakers were will be filled and a new mounting system for the flags installed. A
new digital speaker array will be installed toward the end of this process, in mid-November.
Speaking of sound, the good news is that the flooring in the Nave is compatible with the
operation of an inductive-loop hearing assist system! The concern was that metal in the floor
would degrade the performance of this technology, which works with most modern hearing
aids to transmit sound directly to the wearers through their hearing aids without additional
equipment, as long as they sit within the floor-mounted loop. Testing, including the presence
of at least one hearing assist volunteer, showed clear signal reception without distortion. While
not part of the original plan, the installation of the inductive-loop system was considered by
the Construction Committee to be a desirable high-value improvement. It also worked out to
be affordable under the audio budget, in part because of the planned replacement of vinyl tiles
under the pews.
Thanks to the small army of volunteers who helped remove the pews and altar from the Nave!
The two hours it took to accomplish this was, by all accounts, much quicker than expected.
Stay tuned for future volunteer opportunities as the work moves forward.
Do you need a copy of the Word in Season booklet? This is a great tool for everyone to use
as they study the Bible. The book can be mailed to you or picked up quarterly. Each day of
the quarter has its own page listing several readings from the Bible as well as a commentary
about something in the reading. It takes only a few minutes each day and it gives an inspiring
message. Please call the parish office at (508) 753-2989 and request your copy and that your
name be added to our regular mailing list. The parish office now has the issue for October,
November and December 2016.

Kevin Strickland, to plan and coordinate worship and music at the Churchwide level, provide
worship and music leadership and resources to congregations for their worship ministry, and
develop teaching tools and support those who are responsible for the quality of music in the
congregations of this church. John will also serve as the music director for the chapel for staff
and visitors at the Lutheran Center. Cantor John begins this new ministry on October 17. His

There will be a light snack,

Adult Forum for This October: October 2017 is the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran
Reformation which redirected the life of the Church and reshaped Western Society. It was on
the Eve of All Saints Day, October 31, 1527, that Luther (1483-1546) is said to have posted his
95 theses for debate of the church’s teachings and practices. We as Lutherans are heirs to the
consequent debates and discussions that continue to this day.
This year the Adult Forum’s overarching theme relates to being Lutheran in the midst of the
Reformation then (1517) and now (2017). We are blessed at Trinity by a variety of gifted
individuals. One is the former reformation scholar at Boston University’s School of Theology,
Carter Lindberg. Recently he edited The Forgotten Luther: Reclaiming the Social – Economic
Dimension of the Reformation, containing the presentations of a symposium on that subject
which was held November 2015.
Carter will lead the discussion on the five Sundays in October. He has chosen to use slides to
illustrate the use and abuse of Luther and the Reformation by the church and society around
the centennials of 1617, 1717, 1817, 1917 and 2017 as well as the Prussian, Nazi and Marxist
uses of Luther in the 1870’s, World War II and its aftermath. Come, share in this journey from
the middle ages through today noting the impact of the reformation.
The Adult Forum meets from 9 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. Sunday mornings in the library, accessible by
either of Jeppson’s hallways. The nature of the forum is that of exploration and sharing of
one’s doubts and certainties.
Participants are encouraged to speak from one’s own perspective and to engage in “active
listening” so that there is space for each participant to share one’s opinion / position, to be
heard and be challenged to grow.
Men’s
Trinity’s Men’s Bible Study has resumed its weekly meetings on
Wednesdays from 7-8 a.m. in the Golden Room. New members are
always welcome!

Briefly Noted
Remember, First Sunday Is Food Sunday! Please bring your non-perishable food items to
Trinity on October 2 and again on November 6. Your food donations go to Carty Cupboard,
which provides food to those in need in the immediate area. Thank you for helping those in
need!
Reach the Beach Relay Race for Calumet’s Campership Fund Update: Calumet's teams have
completed both the Reach the Beach walk and the Reach the Beach Relay! The Reach the Beach
walkers, which included seven members of Trinity, raised $3,500 for Calumet's campership
fund over the course of this summer. Calumet's five Reach the Beach Relay teams, which were
made up of 60 staff alumni and friends of Camp Calumet, ran 200 miles in thirty hours through
the mountains of New Hampshire on the weekend of September 17-18, arriving at Hampton
Beach on Saturday afternoon. That effort raised $80,000 for Calumet's campership fund! There
are going to be a lot of happy children in New England next summer because all of that money
is going to go towards helping families meet the cost of sending their children to resident camp
at Camp Calumet! Thank you to everyone who supported Calumet's Reach the Beach activities
this summer!
Finally, Trinity will be holding a Calumet-themed coffee hour after the 10 a.m. worship service
on October 30. We will be collecting donations for Calumet's campership fund at that time. Be
on the lookout for more information on that coffee hour as the date gets closer!
Calling all Pumpkin Carvers! Trinity Lutheran Church is going to
participate in the Great Pumpkin Fest at the EcoTarium. This event was
attended by 5,000 people last year!
To help the EcoTarium with their illuminated pumpkin display, we will
be receiving pumpkins to carve. Carving will take place on Wednesday,
October 19, from 5-8 in Fellowship Hall. Feel free to come carve your
pumpkin before worship and dinner, or carve after dinner as your schedule allows! See Jena
Hardy for further details at (508) 753-2989 x 16 or [email protected].

combating poverty all over the world. The CROP Walk is the oldest continuing walkathon in
the United States.
All are welcome to participate, either through walking or making a donation. Registration will
begin at the Pleasant Street Baptist Church (corner Pleasant and 6 Ashland St) on Sunday,

Notes of thanks:
From One of Our Scholarship Recipents: I would like to thank Trinity for the scholarship
awarded to me for my studies at Fitchburg State University. This scholarship will help towards
my goal of becoming a kindergarten teacher upon graduation. With appreciation, Ana Fenner
Dear Trinity Lutheran Church Congregation: Thank you so much for selecting me as one of
the recipients of your generous scholarships! Your support helps ensure I have the necessary
funds to continue attending WPI which means so much to me and my family. The school is
the perfect place for me personally because of the professional environment that also allows
for personal growth outside the classroom. I am pursuing a degree in Electrical and Computer
Engineering(ECE) with a minor in Computer Science. So far I have taken a myriad of classes
in both of these fields, with some of my favorites being Real Time Embedded Systems and
Advanced Digital System Design with FPGAs. In addition to my studies, I am a member of
the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. WPI athletics provide me with a sense of
comradery and belonging that I wouldn’t get from academics alone. I also help out local Cub
Scout Troop 54 as a den leader and Boy Scout Troop 54 as an assistant scoutmaster. For my
junior project, which we call the Interactive Qualifying Project(IQP), I worked with a team of
students who weren’t in my major field on an off-campus project in Worcester. The project
involved designing a process for integrating high tech assistive technology into residential
homes operated by Seven Hills Foundation. For my senior project or Major Qualifying
Project(MQP) I will be working with two other ECE students to take devices called iBeacons,
which are small embedded processors equipped with transmitters, and use them to create a
smart home environment which we will first incorporate in one of the labs on campus.
Hopefully after graduation I will get a job in the wireless communications field or some sort
of embedded computing field. Thank you so much for your support, David Goodrich, WPI
Class of 2017, [email protected]
Dear Trinity Scholarship Committee: Thank you so much for awarding me a Trinity
Scholarship This year! This year is the year that I have looked forward to for the past two
years because I finally start to write my honor’s thesis in computer networking and my classes
become even more interesting! Trinity has supported me through my entire college career and
I cannot thank you all enough for everything. Thank you so much! Conrad Geenty

From Dismas House to Pastor Nachtigal and the Friends at TLC: Thank you for your recent
donation to Dismas House. We appreciate your generosity and goodwill towards the Dismas
family. Dismas House provides critical services and welcoming hand to former prisoners in
need. (Full text is in the letter on the bulletin board outside the Parish Office) Each year
Dismas House touches the lives of 100 men, women and children through our programs and
services. Dismas programs reconnect former prisoners with the fabric of society, while also
instilling in residents a new sense of home, self-worth and purpose. Thank you for your kind
support. Please visit our website at www.dismashouse.org for an update on all of the
programs in the Dismas family. Sincerely Colleen Hilferty, Co-Executive Director
Worcester Pride 2016: On September 10, several Trinity members participated in the
Worcester Pride parade by marching behind Trinity’s “All Are Welcome” banner from
Institute Park to the Worcester Commons, the site of the Pride Festival. Others from Trinity
were at “our corner” serving water to the parade participants and spectators. The Reconciling
in Christ (RIC) Ministry Team would like to thank all who participated in this important
ministry!
Grace Full: Hammonasset Meets Camp Calumet -- Two of the greatest things that the New
England Synod has happening for youth collided on the weekend of September 9-11. For
decades, Hammonassett State Park in CT has played host to hundreds of Lutheran youth for
one weekend in September where the Synod sponsored event includes guest speakers, music
and of course, the beach. At Hammo, EVERYONE camps and provides their own food. Due
to construction at the State Park this year, Hammo had to move north to one of the greatest
places on earth, Camp Calumet! Calumet provided more options for lodging (camping,
cabins, platform tents) and even made it possible for groups to not have to worry about
bringing food with them at all (there were meal plans available in the dining hall).
Eleven youth and three adults from Trinity camped in the Family Campground and ate their
meals in the dining hall for the weekend. Our music and entertainment was provided by Lost
& Found, a two-man group that is well-known in the ELCA. Our guest speaker was Pastor
Justin Vetrano from Long Island who spent time telling stories and talking about the theme,
“Grace Full.” Jena Hardy was the emcee for the event. A BIG THANK YOU to: Mario Silva,
Norma Mills and Kathy Gingras who chaperoned, supervised and made it possible for Vinny,
Andrew, Morgan, Max, Cole, Grace, Ethan, Ana, Sofia, Libby and Evan to get up to Hammo!

A Thousand and One Thanks to everyone who helped with this year's picnic: the grill
masters, the cooks who brought potluck dishes, the servers, the bake sale organizers, the
bakers who made delicious goodies to sell and everyone who helped set up and clean up. The
day was a spirited success initiating another year of God’s grace and blessing. Thank you to
everyone for supporting the bake sale which raised $530.00 for Vera Cunningham’s NEADs
dog.
And From Vera: I would like to thank everyone who donated baked goods and those who
purchased them. It was an overwhelming show of support for myself and for my future
partner (a NEADS dog). I would like to thank each and everyone of you. Photos were taken
of the bake table. It was amazing. Thank you so much. Love, Vera Cunningham

Trinity membership included in their hospital profile. Calls are made daily to the area
hospitals, and names of Trinity members who are in the hospital are provided to us for
updating in the Parish Notes.
Hope for Housing Gift Cards: On the first Sunday of each month, Katherine Duffy will be selling
the gift cards in the hall outside of Jeppson. The cards are from Big Y, Hannaford, Shaw’s, Stop &
Shop, Dunkin’ Donuts, Panera and CVS in various denominations. If you miss Katherine this
Sunday, you may call the office at (508) 753-2989 to place an order for any of these cards. Just
remember that you are helping people in Worcester County to stay in their homes. One gets the
full value of the card purchased and in turn, the vendor donates 5% to help alleviate homelessness.

TLC Christian Preschool
Wants You!
~ We have several ways you can be a part of our community ~
Last year we implemented “Trinity Readers” to our program. What does it
entail, you ask? Individuals, such as yourself, who love to read children’s
books can schedule a planned visit to the school. You can spend five minutes
or half an hour with the children. In the past, we have had some Trinity
members read a story and bring props while others only had time to read a story and run.
Whatever the time frame, the children and staff were always thrilled to see members of Trinity
pass our way.
Preschool Board: If interested, you can join the Preschool Board for a one-year
commitment. We currently meet bi-monthly to discuss topics such as budget,
program changes, staffing etc. We also appreciate when board members can
participate during our family events. Our meetings run from 5:45 to 7 p.m.
Last, but not least, if you have a preschool child between the ages of 2.9 and five
years of age and you are looking for a fun, creative school where your child can
explore, expand their imagination and grow in every way, then this is the school
for them.
Our annual Fall children’s clothing exchange is about to begin. If you
would like to participate, please drop off gently used and laundered
clothing to Mary starting September 26, 2016. The exchange will
officially start on October 3, 2016. Feel free to go through the items and
take clothing that you would like for your child or grandchild. All left-

The T.E.C. Schools, Think. Explore. Create. have greatly enjoyed and benefitted from a partnership with the TLC Preschool. We are thankful that such an established wealth of knowledge and skill is so close by, and are grateful for the welcome we have received. The teachers and staff of both the TLC Preschool and The T.E.C. School
joined together for an interactive professional development on September 2, closing out the week of teacher trainings with a workshop facilitated by Crocodile River Music, one of our community partners.
Teachers enjoyed instruction and hands-on experience with African drums. Crocodile River Music left a “Country in a Box” for the TLC Preschool and The T.E.C. School to use and explore, filled with a variety of musical instruments for young children, maps, objects related to culture and ceremony, and lesson plans about Mali.
All of us at The T.E.C. School are excited to bring
various community partners to the Trinity Lutheran
Church, and with each new face, we help to expand
this dynamic, vibrant community that has been so welcoming to our school. Over the past few
weeks, we also met some of the parishioners who stopped by to inquire about the school. We
welcome you to stop by to say hello and learn about our program. Please join us at our
upcoming events:
Kindergarten Open House, October 1, 10am-1pm - The T.E.C. Schools classroom
Scary STEAM MakerFaire, October 29, 10am-1pm - The T.E.C. Schools classroom, TLC
Gym, and Fellowship Hall
