Trinity Community Protection and Landscape Restoration Project Addresses the following components: Cohesive Wildfire Management Strategy goals USFS Region 5 Ecological Restoration Intent Trinity County Community Wildfire Protection Plan
Establish and maintain priority fuel breaks along linear landscape features including priority roads and ridgetops to facilitate safe evacuation, firefighter access, and landscape fire management across the Mad River Ranger District (744 roadway miles)
Lightening strikes ignite forest fires in summer 2015
Post-fire Strategy
Phased planning – triage approachFocal Area: Within Lassics and Pickett Fire perimetersPhase 1. From Fire Kill to Fuelbreaks Project (dead tree only, up to 250 acres) Decision no later than June 2016
Phase 2. Tentative - From Fire Kill to Fuelbreaks Project (II) (dead tree only, up to 250 acres) Decision no later than July 2016
Focal Area: District ScalePhase 3. Trinity Community Protection and Landscape Restoration Project (includes live trees) Decision 2017 (Funding dependent)
On November 18, 2015, Six Rivers National Forest staff and members of TCCG subgroup visited areas burned by wildfire to discuss management treatments.
From Fire kill to Fuelbreak treatment methods: Harvest fire-killed dead trees (no green foliage at time
of harvest) on both sides of open public roads - would not exceed 300 ft. width (not including the width of the road, shoulder to shoulder)
Minimum width either side of the road would be 25 feet Ground-based logging systems No new roads or temporary roads
Forest Service identifies potential treatment areas
Forest Service excludes treatments within the Lassics wilderness
Forest Service excludes treatments within Inventoried Roadless Area
Forest Service excludes treatments within Special Interest Area
Forest Service identifies treatments defining the proposed action
Forest Service proposed treatments within the Lassics Fire perimeter
Forest Service proposed treatments within the Pickett Fire perimeter
Next steps
Phase 1. From Fire Kill to Fuelbreaks Project CE – continue surveys once snowfall melts, analysis and preparation of reports
Phase 2. Tentative - From Fire Kill to Fuelbreaks Project CE II – continue field review to identify potential treatment areas once snowfall melts
Phase 3. Trinity Community Protection and Landscape Restoration Project EA – begin project development, surveys once snowfall melts and analysis
