Students. The aim of this handbook is to help you find your way

around your Film Studies course details and requirements and to

describethefacilitiesandfunctionsoftheFilmStudiesdepartment.It

1. INTRODUCTION

WelcometoFilmStudiesatTrinityCollegeDublin.

FilmStudiesispartoftheSchoolofDrama,FilmandMusic.Studentscan

study Film in combination with another Arts subject for a TSM (Two-

Subject Moderatorship) degree. The three or four years of the Film

StudiesTSMprogrammeallowstudentstosampleawiderangeof film

and digitalmedia texts and become fully immersed in the intellectual

currentsthatflowinandaroundthem.Fromthebeginning,questionsof

history, theory and context combine with issues of close analysis and

interpretationtoprovideacoursethat isbothrigorousandrewarding.

From the Senior Freshman years, students will be introduced to the

basicsofscreenwritingandfilmproduction.

8. TEACHINGANDLEARNING

Attendance at lectures, seminars and practice-based classes is

compulsory.Punctualityisdemandedofeveryone,sothatclassesbegin

and end on time. A student who arrives for a lecture, seminar or

workshopover10minuteslatewillbeconsideredasabsent.

Lectures

Lectures and seminars last 50 minutes, starting on the hour. Senior

Freshman practice-based classes last for one hour and 50 minutes.

Lectures and seminars are designed to help you in your reading and

understandingoffilmanddigitalmediastudies.Whileitisnotnecessary

towritedownthelecturer’severyword,takingnotesofthechiefpoints

isessential.

Seminars

Seminarsmeetweekly insmallgroups.Youmustbeproperlyprepared

forseminarsbydoingallthereading,viewingandpreparationassigned

bythelecturersandseminarleaders.Seminarsgiveyouanopportunity

to tryoutyourown ideasandenter intodiscussionsabout film,digital

mediaandrelatedculturalareas.

Screenings

Most lectures are accompaniedby a relevant screening. Freshmenare

expected to attend all screenings and to come to class prepared to

discussthefilminquestion.Sometimeslecturersand/orseminarleaders

will suggest additional viewing that can be done in your own time.

Screenings should be treated with the same respect as any other

academic activity. Eating or drinking is not allowed during screenings

andstudentsmustnotdisruptanotherperson’sviewingbyarrivinglate,

makingnoiseorbehavinginappropriately.

Your individual timetable is available online through SITS on the local

TCDwebsite. Ifyouhaveproblemswithyourtimetable,pleaseseethe

BooksandArticles

Itisessentialtoequipyourselfwithbooksandyoumustacquirecopies

ofsettexts:youwillnotbeabletodependonthelibraryforsuchtexts.

Readinglistsforeachmoduleareavailablefromthebeginningofterm

andyoushouldstartreadingthetextsthatfigureintheearlyweeksas

soonaspossible. Individuallecturerswillgivemoreinformationabout

the texts they assign. Occasionally, lecturers will post copies of key

articlesonBlackboard.

ThemainlibraryforFilmStudiesstudentsistheUssher,butyouwillalso

Many of the screenings, lectures and seminars take place in the

All communications from College will be sent to you via your online

portalwhichwill give youaccess to an ‘in-tray’ of yourmessages. You

willalsobeabletoviewyourtimetablesonline,bothforyourteaching

andforyourexaminations.Detailsaboutmodulesmayalsobereadon

SITS.Allfeeinvoices/payments,studentleviesandcommencementfees

will be issued online and all payments will be carried out online. You

may view your personal details in the system, some sections ofwhich

you will be able to edit yourself. You will be able to check your

11.ASSESSMENT

Modules may be assessed by any combination of essay, assignment,

coursework and class participation. Practice-based modules may be

assesseddifferently.Itisyourresponsibilitytoensurethatyouareaware

oftheassessmentrequirementsforallmodules.Assessmentinformation

willbeincludedinallmoduleoutlines.

Presentingcoursework

There are formal requirements for the presentation and submission of

courseworkandyoumustfamiliariseyourselfwiththesestraightaway.

All essays/assignments must be word-processed. Essays/assignments

mustbedouble-spacedandthepagesmustbenumberedonthebottom

right-hand side. You should use Arial, font size 12, and have adequate

marginsateithersideofthepage.

You must proofread your work carefully before submission. Poor

presentationisnotacceptable.

Youmust includeyourwordcountat theendof theessay/assignment.

The word count should not include title, bibliography, filmography,

footnotesorreferences.

13. PENALTIES FOR LATE SUBMISSION OR NON-SUBMISSION OF

COURSEWORK

Students must satisfy the requirements of the assessment and

attendance elements of the course work. Penalties for non-

submission/late assignments are as follows: no assignments will be

accepted after the deadline without an extension approved by the

Freshman convenor supported by relevant documentation. A non-

submissionwillberecordedaszero.

AssessmentExtensionApproval

The deadline for submission of an assessment will be extended only

when reasonable evidence as to why the assessment is late can be

supplied(e.g.amedicalcertificateorotheracceptabledocumentation).

YoumustapplytotheFreshmanConvenorviaemail foranassignment

extension.Extensionsshouldbesoughtpriortotheassessmentdeadline

and the accompanying medical certificate or other appropriate

documentation, clearly indicating the period forwhich youwish to be

excused, shouldbe submitted to the Film Studies administratorwithin

tenworkingdaysofreturningtoCollege.

14. REFERENCING

§ ALL essays/assignments require a clear and coherent

referencingsystem.Itisessentialthatyouprovideevidenceof

the sources of ANY information you use in your

essay/assignmentthatcomesfromelsewhere.

§ Two of the most common ways of doing this are by using

FOOTNOTESorENDNOTES.Footnotesappearatthebottomof

thepageandEndnotesappearattheendofthedocument.

§ Microsoft Word will automatically insert Footnotes and

Afterthefirstmentionofafilmcharacter,youshouldincludetheactor’s

name inbrackets.After the firstmentionof a film, you shouldprovide

thedirector’snameanddateofreleaseinbrackets.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

A bibliography must be included at the conclusion of all

essays/assignments. Entries should be listed alphabetically by author’s

surname and should also include FULL details of date, place and

publisher.

Ifyouare inanydoubt thenconsider theway inwhichbooksyouread

for the course organise their information. The Bibliography should list

titlesreferencedinthetext.Youmayincludea‘WorksConsulted’section

toindicatefurtherreadingthatyoudonotdirectlycite.

Eachyear,beforeHilaryTermbegins,SeniorFreshmenmaypresentfor

the Scholarship Examination. The Scholarship Examination recognises

andrewardsexceptionalacademicability.TheScholarshipexaminationis

asearchingexamination,suitable for theSeniorFreshman level,of two

papers.TobeawardedaScholarshipacandidatemusthaveanaverage

markof70%orhigher,andinadditionthegradeprofileofthecandidate

should indicate a majority of first class marks. Please consult the

Examinations Office webpage for information regarding applying to sit

theScholarshipExamination.StudentsconsideringtakingtheScholarship

Examination may arrange an appointment with a member of staff to

18. EUROPEANCREDITTRANSFERSYSTEM(ECTS)

The ECTS is an academic credit transfer and accumulation system

representing the student workload required to achieve the specified

objectivesofastudyprogramme.

TheECTSweightingforamoduleisameasureofthestudentinputor

workload required for that module, based on factors such as the

numberofcontacthours,thenumberandlengthofwrittenorverbally

presented assessment exercises, class preparation and private study

time, laboratory classes, examinations, clinical attendance,

professionaltrainingplacements,andsoonasappropriate.Thereisno

intrinsic relationship between the credit volume of amodule and its

levelofdifficulty.

InCollege,1ECTSunitisdefinedas20-25hoursofstudentinputsoa

10-creditmodulewillbedesignedtorequire200-250hoursofstudent

input includingclasscontacttimeandassessments.TheCollegenorm

forfull-timestudyoveroneacademicyearatundergraduatelevelis60

credits.

ECTScreditsareawardedtoastudentonlyuponsuccessfulcompletion

ofthecourseyear.Progressionfromoneyeartothenextisdetermined

bythecourseregulations. Studentswhofailayearoftheircoursewill

not obtain credit for that year even if they have passed certain

componentcourses. Exceptionstothisruleareone-yearandpart-year

visiting students, who are awarded credit for individual modules

successfullycompleted.

19.FRESHMANINFORMATION

FreshmanTSMstudentsareregisteredforsixcompulsorymodulesover

two terms.Mostmodules consist of a screening, lecture and seminar,

although somemodules are organised differently. You are expected to

haveviewed the requiredmaterial and tohave read the required texts

before the lecture and seminar. You are expected to be fully prepared

andreadyfordiscussion.Yourseminarpreparationwillbeguidedbythe

module’sreadinglist.

ASSESSMENT

To risewith their class, studentsmust attend satisfactorily the lectures

STUDENTEXCHANGESCHEMES

The School of Drama, Film and Music participates in a number of

exchange schemes with other European universities and with eight

campusesoftheUniversityofCalifornia.Itispossibleforsomestudents

to take their JS year abroad. This possibility is dependent upon the

course requirements for each of your subjects being fulfilled. Students

shouldalsobeawareofthepossibilitythatcertainsubjectcombinations

can complicate the exchange procedure. For further information you

should contact Professor Ruth Barton the co-coordinator of such

exchangesinthedepartmentofFilmStudies,forinformationandadvice.

It is advisable to do this well in advance, as early in the SF year as

possible. Outgoing exchange students must have their academic

programmesabroadapprovedbyDr.Barton,andshouldstayincontact

withherduringtheirtimeabroadtoensuretheiracademicprogramme

satisfiesTrinityrequirements.

PLEASENOTE:Poorattendance,failedexaminationsand/orinconsistent

or inadequate coursework may affect a student’s likelihood of being

acceptedontoanexchangeprogramme.Intheeventofcompetitionfor

Erasmus places, decisionswill be based on academic performance and

participation.

25. STUDENTREPRESENTATIVES

Eachyeargroupmustelectastudentrepresentative,or‘classrep’,early

inMichaelmasterm,whowillserveinthatroleforoneyear.Aclassrep

isjustwhatitsoundslike,achancetorepresentyourclass.Itisawayof

becoming more involved in College. By representing your class, you

attend Students Union Council meetings and are entitled to vote on

issuesraisedthere. Thismeansthatyouensureastudentvoiceinhow

College functionsandyoumeetpeople fromallover thecollege. Class

repsmayalsoorganiseclasspartiesorsocialevents,whichmeansyour

classgetstoknoweachotherbettertoo.

26. SECURITY,SAFETYANDINSURANCE

NoSmoking

AllspacesoperatedbytheSchoolofDrama,FilmandMusicaregoverned

bya strictNO-SMOKINGpolicyandNOexceptionswillbemade to this

rule. This includes the Samuel Beckett Centre and the corridors in 191

and 192 Pearse Street. Any evidence of smoking (discarded cigarette

endsetc.) could invalidate theSchool’s insuranceand result in aheavy

fine.

FireExits

Allfireexitsareclearlymarkedanditisessentialthattheseexitsarenot

blocked.ItisalsoimportanttoensurethatdoorsareNOTheldopenwith

orblockedbyfire-fightingequipment.Extinguishersandbucketsshould

remainintheirallocatedplacesandnotbemovedwithoutgoodreason.

Thisruleappliestoalldoors,especiallythosethatofferpotentialaccess

topublicspaces.ANYviolationofthisrulewillbereported.

BuildingSecurityandPersonalSafety

The School operates a series of security-coded doors and it is YOUR

responsibility to treat the codes as confidential. Information about the

door codes is available from the School’s administrative office. Do not

divulgethesecodestoanyoneelse.

BurglariesoccasionallytakeplaceatTrinityCollegeandthismeansthat

onlythosepeoplewithofficialSchoolbusinessareallowedtoenterthe

School’sbuildings.Ifyouhaveanydoubtsaboutanyoneappearing‘lost’

thenyoushouldcontacttheSchooloffice,amemberofstafforCollege

security immediately. Also please ensure that you keep your valuables

withyouatALLtimes.
