Scamp Theatre presentsThe Virginia Monologues: Why Growing Old is Great

Written and performed by Virginia Ironside

Directed by Nigel Planer

“...a gentle, life-affirming ramble through the joys of being a

sexagenarian – the bus passes, the bird watching, the

glamorous dressing gowns.” - The Independent

When an agony aunt reaches sixty, she can lie like a

trooper, jump off a bridge – or take to the stage. Virginia

Ironside explains that unlimited free drugs, fun funerals,

grandchildren and sex – or, even better, no sex – make the

sixties the best – and funniest - time of your life…

The Virginia Monologues premiered at the Edinburgh

Festival Fringe to great acclaim and played limited season

of UK sold out gigs in 2010.

"Virginia’s become, effectively, a stand-up comedian. Her

show is really funny…. I urge you to see it.”

- Arthur Smith ‘Loose Ends’ BBC Radio 4

“This doyenne of Fleet Street delivers her observations

with precision, style and wit. Her writing is beautiful, funny,

sensible and smart – and her show, directed by The Young

Ones’ Nigel Planer, is an absolute delight.” - Scotsman

Stig of the DumpBy Clive King

Is Stig real or is he the product of Barney’s boyhood

imagination? Lou sees Stig, and so do lots of other

people, but does this mean they really go back in time to

the building of the stone circles? This wonderful musical

production of Clive King’s famous story, with lots of

opportunity for the audience to take part, will be a truly

magical experience.

During the light hearted first act rehearsal some children

are rehearsed into small parts in the show while the rest

of the audience are taught the chorus songs. This is family

theatre at its very best.

Said by the author to be the best adaptation of his novel, this wonderful production will be

another moving and stimulating experience of high quality musical theatre for both children

and adults.

Continues over page

Page 5: Trinity Arts Centre July to September 2011

Clive King's wonderful story of Barney and his Neolithic friend Stig has

been a firm favourite with children and adults since it was first published

in the early sixties. Barney and Stig's many adventures in and around the

chalk pit, near his grandfather's house, culminate in a fascinating journey

back in time to the days when there were only Stigs and stone circles.

With beautiful costumes, an ingenious set and wonderful music from

Robert Hyman, this production will continue Image Musical Theatre's

tradition of providing the very best touring productions for theatres and

primary schools.

The Magnets

"a cappella band The Magnets are complete pros...they're a band to watch in 2011" -

The Guardian

They are the singing secret that the stars have kept to themselves, the vocal group with a

word-of-mouth reputation for spicing up the parties of supermodels, heads of state and

billionaires with their blend of glorious harmonies and jaw dropping beat-boxing. But now,

after selling out London’s legendary Roundhouse, electrifying performances at the Isle of

Wight and Glastonbury Festivals, and their current sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe, The

Magnets are emerging from the shadows as one of Britain’s hottest musical acts.

Literally a ‘six-man sound machine’, The Magnets make all their music with their mouths

alone, including the drums of vocal percussionist/beat-boxer Andy Frost and the richly

textured bass of Fraser Collins. However, this is no attempt to mimic instruments, but rather

the blending of six distinctive voices to create a unique sound that rivals any band with guitars

and keyboards.

At the heart of The Magnets music lies a gift for extraordinarily imaginative arrangements that

radically restyle and subvert songs from artists as diverse as Kraftwerk and Beyoncé.

Highlights include a sun soaked lounge version of Blur’s ‘Girls & Boys', a sultry 'Poker Face'

by Lady Gaga (recently performed for Scott Mills on Radio 1), and their trademark

mega-medleys, currently a show-stopping A-Z of movie themes from A-Team to Zulu.

Now centre-stage in the current revival in vocal harmony music, seen everywhere from Glee

to The Choir, The Magnets have risen from humble beginnings as street performers in

London's Covent Garden. They have enjoyed a colourful subsequent history, including an EMI

record deal, support tours with Tom Jones and Michael Ball, and continuous international

touring from Singapore to the Cayman Islands. They have recently been seen and heard on

ITV1’s Magic Numbers, BBC Breakfast, and BBC Radio 1 and 2.

"a cappella singing straight from the Gods…The Magnets are the epitome of cool" -

the figurative knife into political correctness with

devastatingly funny effect. She performs all over

Diane Spencer'A rollickingly good slice of frank, un-gimmicky stand-up. She could be the female Jim

Jefferies, with an honesty and humility that makes her abject embarrassment riotously

hilarious' **** - chortle.co.uk

Nominated for Best Female Comedian by the New Zealand Comedy Guild, Diane is a

globetrotting gagster who is witty, wordy and intelligently armed with hilariously challenging

stories. She performs with such an affable humility she might have you thinking of the girl next

door, but swiftly turns heads as she explodes in a raucously rude and rib-tickling manner.

Ruth E Cockburn'She does something the best comedians do; finds material that the audience recognises from

their own lives, and simultaneously makes them realise how foolish they are.”' – Underground

A regular fixture at ‘Laughing Cows’ at Manchester’s legendary Frog & Bucket comedy venue

and an established playwright with her work having being performed at numerous festivals

from Edinburgh to Sydney; Ruth’s comedy is a perilously potent mix of spot-on, slightly

surreal social commentary and brilliantly inventive, hummable and instantly hilarious songs.

tunes, comedy and pathos in 'Blitz!'

striking workers and a heart attack keep Robert at home,

Suzanne flourishes as his replacement in the boardroom.

Even the return of an ex-lover can’t hold her back. Very

funny. (Potiche, by the way, means a trophy wife).

The Tempest

‘A theatrical tour de force’ - The Scotsman

An old man is comatose and near death...the play of The

Tempest is his last living second, a time in which his loss

is assuaged and his enemies forgiven. With an

enchanting mesh of mime, masking, movement, and the

music of voice, the two actors conjure storms and

apparitions, lay bare treasons and counterplot, and finally

transport you to a ‘brave new world’ of love and

reconciliation.

The two-man Tempest is an audacious and exhilarating

adaptation of Shakespeare’s tumultuous farewell to the

stage by Geoff Bullen with a specially commissioned

score by the internationally renowned composer Tot

Taylor, including contributions from Stacey Kent, Alan

Barnes, and Simon Warner.

Minimal, magical and not to be missed!

Tickets £10, £8 (concessions)

Films 4 Families: Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 (PG)Dir: David Bowers 99mins

Zachery Gordon, Devon Bostock

This bubbly sequel to the first Wimpy Kid movie is

arguably even funnier as Greg and his older brother

Rodrick try to deal with their parents nutty idea that the

two kids must actually start to like each other. A film that

will get the whole family laughing.

Tickets £3

Saturday 24th September at 7.30pm

Larry Crowne (12A)Dir: Tom Hanks. 99mins Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts

Tom Hanks’ second film as director features him in the

title role as a middle-aged man who loses his job and

re-invents his life after returning to college. There he

becomes attracted to a disillusioned teacher (Julia

Roberts) and both rediscover a reason to live. A warm

and very human comedy drama.

Tickets £4.50, £3.50 (concessions)
