Good Afternoon and welcome to The Grassroots Stadium for this Spartan South

Midland Premier Division tie.

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of St.Margaretsbury to Tring, and we hope they enjoy their short stay with us.

We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Referee- Mr. O.Ayyadi, and

his assistants Mr S.Crowhurst and Mr.T.Butler Today’s match is sponsored by- One of our faithful supporters-Gary Evans and

we would like to thank him once again for his generous support.

This being our first game since Christmas, may we wish you all a Happy New Year.

This is our first match since losing some what unluckily to Berkhamsted on the 28th

of December. All other sides have had their fixtures postponed due to the wet

conditions so we have not fallen further behind with our games. We are at home

again next Saturday and then have a spell of 11 games with only 2 at home followed

by 9 games with only 2 away.

This is our second meeting of the season as they beat us here 3-2 in the Premier

Division cup back in October. We will meet again in 5 weeks in the return fixture.

Honours are quite even between the two sides although ‘Bury’ have had the upper

hand more recently and we have a poor home record against them. They are in 6th

place at the moment 4 points in front of us having played 1 game more, so this is a

vital game for both sides to try and take points.

We would like to welcome Taylor Collins to the club and also belatedly Liam Watson

who has done a magnificent job between the sticks during Mike Underwood’s injury.

The reserves game was cancelled last Saturday against Camberley and we await a

new fixture date. They also lost Thursday’s fixture to Dunstable to the wet

conditions and are without a game today .

The A and B Teams are both away if they get the go ahead, which is most doubtful.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 3 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned which

resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.

South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists in

the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game.

The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the league

after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award.

Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down in

March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement with

Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A Vase

for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim round.

In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large crowd

enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying on

in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position.

However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up the

St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time

Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy.

However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to Arsenal reserves.

SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. unfortunately the Ladies team withdrew from their league through lack of players.

Brief History of St Margaretsbury FC

The Club was Founded in 1894 as Stanstead Abbotts FC, with their home at Mill Field, Cappell Lane in Stanstead Abbotts. Playing in the Herts County League, East Herts and Hertford & District Leagues they won the local Graphic Cup during the 1920’s and 1930’s. After 1945 the Club played in the Waltham & District League, re-joining the Herts County League in season 1947/48. In their first season back in the Herts County League the Club won Division two, gaining promotion and winning the Aubrey (League) Cup. In 1962 the Club moved to their present location, St Margaretsbury Recreation Ground, one of the conditions being they change their name to St Margaretsbury FC. The Club’s next honour was in 1972 when again they won the Aubrey Cup. At the end of the 1987/88 season the 1st XI were briefly relegated to Division One, but returned to the Premier Division at the start of 1991/92. After 44 years in the Herts Senior County League the 1st XI became members of the London Spartan League, Premier Division for the start of season 1992/93, finishing in a very creditable 6th place. That season also saw the Club gain its first County Cup by winning the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy, defeating Sawbridgeworth Town 2-1, at Ware FC. By 1993/94 our league position had progressed to finish 3rd and while celebrating our 100 years centenary we came 2nd in 1994/95. In 1995/96 the Club won the Premier Division Championship and the Reserves and the 3rd X1 made it a treble of Championships by winning their respective Divisions in the McMullen’s Hertford and District League. The Roy Bailey Memorial Trophy was also won that same season, defeating Ware 2-0 at Enfield FC. In 1997/98 the 1st XI won the Herts Charity Shield, defeating London Colney on penalties. In 1998/99 the 1st XI were accepted into the newly formed Minerva Footballs Spartan South Midlands League, Premier Div. Another Milestone in 2000/01 when the Club qualified for entry into the FA Cup. In 2001/02, the Club was awarded the Houghton Regis Cup by the Spartan South Midlands League for achievements in the FA Cup competition. In the same season the Club gained its first Spartan South Midlands League competitive trophy, when they won the Premier Division Cup, beating Potters Bar Town 2-0 in the final. In season 2003/04 there was another good run in the F.A.Cup, having negotiated three rounds before going down to Kettering Town 0-2 away. In the same season, the South Midland Floodlit Cup was won with a 3-2 victory against Wooton Blue X and finished 3rd in the league. Season 2004/05 saw changes in management and key players, and although viewed as a building season the club still managed a credible 7th place in the premier league. Season 2005/06 saw a good FA Cup run, with a dramatic 3-2 away win against Ryman Premier League Billericay Town. Bury finishing 12th in the league. Season 2006/07 saw major changes… not unfortunately good changes! This started with new Chairman John Tobin, and a newly appointed Director of Football Steve Dix! Paul Gurney was first team manager, and it was a very tough season, coming close to relegation but finally finishing 15th in the league. Season 2008/09 – a very turbulent season in terms of internal club issues that put a strain on every aspect of our efforts to achieve our true potential. Despite these new First team manager Lee Judges still managed to hit a credible 14th league position and came in as runners up in the Premier Division Cup.

Season 2009/10 – the club saw new Chairman Gary Stock take up his position, who along with an almost completely new committee, have had to overcome issues at the club that started with the previous Chairman & Director of Football being banned for gross misconduct. With the majority of our youth teams being moved and renamed in more than questionable circumstances, derisory finances on handover in a recession year, this was without doubt one of the toughest starts to any season. But the team somehow still matched the previous season’s 14th league position and were runners up in the Herts Charity Shield final. Season 2010/11 – Much-needed structure, organisation, processes and drive for Chartered Standard are helping to move the club forward, along with ground work & improved facilities like the pitch-side snack bar. Season 2011/12 – Our U18’s SCFYL team performed magnificently, winning their own division and then going on to beat the much admired Academy side Boreham Wood U18’s in the 4 team divisional final, to become overall League Champions. Our First team finished 18th in the league, whilst the reserves finished 3rd and won the Floodlit Cup. Season 2011/12 – The club’s restructuring and regeneration program was complemented by the successful merger of John Warner Youth FC. The First team finished 12th in the league and were Premier League Cup Finalists, while the Reserves were Finalists in the Floodlit Cup. The Senior Club also achieved Chartered Standard, Season 2012/13 – The First Team had an exceptional season, finishing in 4th position in a very strong league. First Team Manager Lee Judges and Assistant Manager Clive Brooks decided to step down at the end of the season, Lee having spent 6 seasons and Clive 3 seasons at the Club. Season 2013/14 – The club announced the appointment of Gavin Kelsey to First Team Manager, with Gavin appointing Paul Tomkins to the position of Reserves Manager. We wish them both well in their new roles. Major changes are also being implemented as the Club’s youth section undergoes a transition to follow the new Club Ethos on Youth Development, which adopts the ‘Streaming’ method as it’s underlying youth strategy. Sat 28th Dec 2013 League Berkhamsted 1-0 TAFC First team Our near neighbours just edged this festive game in front of a decent crowd of 248 to maintain their pursuit of the Premier Division title. There was little to choose between us in this closely fought derby with just one goal on the hour enough to settle the contest . We had the better of the first half with the tables turning in the second in favour of Berko, but overall we did enough to get something out of this game. We were without skipper Graham Hall, Mike Underwood, Dave Salmon and Vinnie Iannone but on the plus side we had Greg Deer back from University and Chris Salmon again wore the Captains arm band. There was also the first sight of Taylor Collins an 18 year old forward signed from Thame United who made a dramatic impact when he came off the bench in the second half. Eight places and 24 points separated the two teams before kick off (although we had 4 games in hand) but any inferiority complex we may have felt was quickly put to bed after we made the early running and looked the better outfit. Greg Deer showed that all that studying had not dulled his footballing skills as he quickly made his presence felt down our right whipping over some dangerous crosses. We also won some early free kicks in promising positions with Trevor Gibbs picking out Adam Toone who skied his shot high and wide. Trevor's next effort caused consternation as the ball bounced around the area until Berko keeper and captain Carl Tasker grabbed the ball to settle home nerves. Berko won the first corner of the match in the 7th minute which we cleared and ours followed 5 minutes later and led to the first genuine scoring opportunity. The kick went straight across the area but Adam Toone rescued the ball then produced a turn and cross back into the area that any winger would have been proud of. The cross was partially cleared to the edge of the area where Chris Salmon skilfully controlled it to open up a great shooting position but he scuffed his effort and the ball was cleared. As you would expect from a derby match the play was at times frenetic and scrappy but never dull with both sets of players intent on working hard to get off the excess Xmas turkey. Midway through the half we nearly presented our hosts with a goal when we carelessly lost the ball near the half way line which set Connor Calcutt free down their left. His cross was met by Jordon Frederick who smashed a volley just over. Berko were sharp and quick in attack and a nice move down our left led to a very good cross to the far post where Josh Chamberlain was waiting, but he had to stretch to reach the ball and he sent his header over the bar. We had to make an early change when George Tomlin went off suffering the effects of what can politely be described as an over exuberant challenge to be replaced by another young prospect Ollie Butler who seamlessly slotted into the right back role. From a Berko set piece Liam Watson did extremely well to clear the danger despite being clattered and Matt Myatt moved the ball onto Chris Vardy who broke at pace towards our opponents area. Vardy did well to hold the ball up before finding Matt who had continued his run and was now in a great position, but his shot was repelled by a fine save from Tasker. Home centre forward Connor Calcutt was a constant source of danger and we had to be on our toes in the 37th minute when he tried to work his way through our defence but we did well to clear the danger. Chris Salmon was harshly penalised when trying to head the ball just outside our area but fortunately for us we were able to clear the free kick. As half time approached we went close on a couple of occasions with Michael Green just failing to make a good connection with a Greg Deer cross followed by a superlative flick from Trevor Gibbs which sent Martin Skinner through but as he shaped to strike the ball a defender bravely managed to just nick it out of the way and got a whack in the process. The half ended without any goals and was still finely balanced but we had performed well and were the better side and perhaps with better finishing could have been a goal ahead.

Half Time: Berkhamsted 0 Tring Athletic 0 Berko swapped James Towell for Steve Hawes at half time and the sub was nearly on the score sheet within 13 minutes when his deft flick from a Connor Calcutt cross would have found the net but for a timely clearance from Michael Green. At the other end a poor clearance from Carl Tasker was played to Chris Salmon but his shot went straight back to the keeper. With 60 minutes gone the dead lock was broken when a fine 40 yard pass picked out the unmarked Connor Culcutt on the right. The former Hemel player ran at our defence before firing a shot past Liam Watson. Michael Green's desperate attempt to clear the ball could not prevent Culcutt from claiming his 31st goal in 36 games, a superb scoring rate. The goal spoiled Liam Watson's perfect record, the former Watford and England Youth International having kept clean sheets in his 2 previous games since coming in for the injured Mike Underwood. Score 1-0 We immediately brought on Taylor Collins and he nearly had a dream start. With his first touch he raced past a defender before being fouled just outside the area, then he struck a fine low shot through a crowd of players which the keeper did well to see and save and with his third touch he cleverly beat the defender and fired a shot just wide of the post. Unfortunately after that Berko got a grip of the game and we were unable to supply him with decent possession but he certainly made a great initial impression. One way back for us was through set pieces and Trevor Gibbs struck a fine free kick that forced the keeper into pushing his shot out for a corner, Then Trevor produced a terrific free kick that required just a touch after the keeper collided with a defender but it curled harmlessly and frustratingly just wide of the far post. As the half wore on Berko grew in confidence with Jordon Frederick directing operations from central midfield. Their giant centre half Ed Canham mistimed a header then tried an acrobatic overhead kick which Liam Watson saved easily. Dan Griggs got on the end of a fine flowing move and fired a shot at Liam Watson and we were fortunate when from our free kick Calcutt was sent through but was prevented from scoring by great goalkeeping from Liam Watson, forcing the Berko centre forward to play the ball to Frank Joule who shot across goal. Both sides made substitutions, the home side bringing on Ashley Morrisey for Dan Griggs and we replaced Martin Skinner with Lee Benning. We kept going and never gave up the search for a goal but as the game progressed the scoring opportunities started to dry up as our opponents saw more of the ball. But right on time we were gifted a golden opportunity to grab a deserved point when a ludicrous and wayward back pass by a Berko player from inside our half fell well short of the keeper. Greg Deer seized on the opportunity and although the keeper was out of his area he still managed to divert the shot wide for a corner which came to nothing. That was our final throw of the dice and Berko held on to secure a narrow victory and claim local bragging rights for now. Full Time: Berkhamsted 1 Tring Athletic 0 This was a good performance by the players against a team in good form who have only lost 3 league games all season. A neutral watching the game would not have thought there was 8 places separating the sides and this should put us in good heart for the rest of the campaign. We remain in 10th place but have between 2 and 6 games in hand over the teams immediately above us and if we could win these games we could go as high as 6th in the table. Unfortunately we will now have a 2 week break before our next game, at home to 6th place St Margaretsbury on Saturday 11 January, which is bizarre considering we are behind with our league fixtures. There was a touching moment before this Challenge Cup Second Round First Leg Tie. Chris

Juraszek has owned the same pair of boots since he picked up a pair of Adidas Norman Hunters

from a charity shop in Lincoln High St in 1974 for 3 shillings and sixpence. The lads had a

whip round and presented him with a nice new pair before kick off. There wasn't a dry eye in

the house.

This game was played in atrocious conditions and it was a battle from the off. The Reserves

have been on a winning run that stretches back to the 12th October and have showed that they

can mix it of late - playing with real spirit and togetherness and here was no exception. Billy

Jeffery had to go in goal but shone in the role. Defensively, led by Captain Marvel Dan

Steadman - the lads looked solid. Unfortunately they fell behind on 25 mins. A looping corner

swirled in the wind and deceived Jeffery and crept over the line - despite fierce protests from

the lads that it hadn't gone over the line.

Tring dug in and began to threaten. A good move, Caterer could have shot but squared it

instead and the chance went begging. Paul Jeffrey, thankfully recovered from his virus last

week, burst through but didn't pull the trigger.

The Reserves showed why they are currently so difficult to beat as they produced an excellent

display after the break - totally dominating the second half. Ryan Sturges was pushed up top

and was beginning to threaten. A good move set him free on the right and his looping cross was

met by Carl Harrison, making his return from injury, but his header was saved well by the

Camberley custodian.

Another flowing move, a ball across the box and Sam Joliffe was again denied by the keeper.

Tring were dominating possession and surely an equaliser was on its way? It was. In the 86th

minute.

Lewis Elliot had looked sharp since coming on. His shot was parried but only into the path of a

gleeful Carl Harrison, who clipped the ball home.

There was no stopping the Lads now and they laid siege to the Camberley goal. Lewis Elliot

was sent through and got clattered in the box just as he was about to shoot. Astonishingly the

referee failed to give a penalty. The team were incensed. Dan Smethers joined Sam Joliffe in

the book with a trademark rant.

The unbeaten run continues and the lads have it all to play for in the Second Leg.
