Good Afternoon and welcome to The Grassroots Stadium for this Spartan South

Midland Premier Division tie.

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of London Lions to Tring,

and we hope they enjoy their short stay with us.

We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Referee- Mr. T.Barnes, and

his assistants Mr T.Weight and Mr.S.O’Connor Today’s match is sponsored by- One of our faithful supporters-Colin Sharman and we would like to thank him once again for his generous support.

This is the first time we have played Lions who were promoted last season. They

are finding life a bit tougher in this higher league which is a bit surprise as they

finished top of their division, above Hoddesdon and Cockfosters who are both doing

well at this level.

But we know there are no easy games these days so we can expect them to be

scrapping for every point to turn their season round.

Lady luck finally turned for us on Tuesday against London Tigers. Although we were

the better side, we still had not made the break through when we were awarded a

penalty for what looked no more than Chris Vardy tripping over his own feet, in

fact no one in the ground appealed for a foul. However the Referee had no

hesitation and was close to the incident. Trevor Gibbs nearly broke the net as he

dispatched the kick. Chris Vardy then showed his tremendous pace to beat his

marker and the keeper to score a well deserved goal which his efforts in recent

weeks fully deserved.

The reserves game was cancelled at Barton on Monday .

Today they are at Camberley in The Challenge Cup where they wll be hoping to keep

their fine run of form going.

The B Team are at Vicarage Celtic whilst the A Team play at the top pitch against

Kings Sports. We wish them all the best in their fixtures today.

This is the last game before Christmas so all at the club wish the players , officials

and especially the suporters all the best for the festive season and hope to see you

at Berkhamsted on the 28th.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 3 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned which

resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.

South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists in

the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game.

The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the league

after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award.

Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down in

March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement with

Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A Vase

for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim round.

In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large crowd

enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying on

in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position.

However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up the

St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time

Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy.

However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to Arsenal reserves.

SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. unfortunately the Ladies team withdrew from their league through lack of players.

History

In the summer of 1995 the players and officials of Maccabi Association London (MAL) decided that they had

reached the limits of Sunday football and that a new challenge was required. The Hertfordshire Senior County

League was a popular choice and with the help of the League's management committee the Club made its

debut in the 95/96 season and was renamed MALEX. Four years later the Club had made many friends in the

League but had narrowly missed out on promotion from Division 1 in every season, finishing 6th, 5th, 7th and

then 4th in the 98/99 season. However the Club was very proud to win the Sportsmanship Trophy in its

inaugural season. An all-Jewish team, the squad during this period was based on MAL players who were

generally playing in the Hendon and District Sunday League and the Maccabi Southern Football League.

As a Sunday side the Club has always been a strong representative of the community - in fact we have won the National Cup on numerous occasions - and have always attracted and welcomed not only the best players locally but also from abroad whether permanent or in transition. We currently have a number of Maccabiah (The Jewish Olympics) capped players and many of our squad represented Great Britain in the 2009 games in Israel as well as the 2007 European Games.

During the 1999 close season, the Club revised its management structure, and decided to change its name to LONDON MACCABI LIONS, whilst retaining its all-Jewish status. This brought in an influx of new players, from a number of Maccabi League Clubs, including champions Scrabble, and under the management team of Bobby Fisher and Adam Solomons the 1st team lost only three league games in their first season as they won the Division 1 title by 4 points. The side also reached the semi-finals of the Aubrey Cup.

Since that time, the two Herts County League sides have both thrived in the top divisions. The first team became recognised as one of the strongest outfits in the Premier League and landed its first silverware in 2007 when it beat Metropolitan Police to lift the Herts Centenary Trophy. This was supplemented by the Reserves who themselves have contributed to three cup final appearances winning one as recently as the 09/10 season and runners up in two others . In the 09/10 season the first team under the stewardship of Tony Gold and Steve Grenfell won the Herts Senior County League for the first time in the club's history, winning promotion to the South Midlands Division One League. In the 10/11 season Lions first in the South Midlands Division One league under Gold and Grenfell once again they added a second Herts Centenary Trophy beating Letchworth Garden City Eagles 3-2.

Having endured a peripatetic existence including homes at Little Bushey Lane, The American University in Bushey, Chase Lodge, two seasons of mud at Copthall Stadium and Old Cholmleians FC, 2002/3 saw the Lions in a permanent den at Rowley Lane, Arkley. Due to ground specification in order to gain promotion London Lions had to have a ground share in place for the 09/10 season due to Rowley Lane not having flood lights and a 100 seater stand. Lions spent the 09/10 season ground sharing with St Albans at Clarence Park. For the 10/11 season Lions agreed a new ground share with Broxbourne Borough Football Club.

In the same season they added a second Herts Centenary Trophy beating Letchworth Garden City Eagles 3–2. With Broxbourne folding Lions returned to Rowley Lane as their home ground though playing midweek fixtures and FA Cup matches at Hemel Hempstead FC.

On August 11, 2012 London Lions became the first Jewish team to win a competitive match in the FA Cup since Wingate beat Acton Town 8-1 in 1948/49 season. The 2012-13 season also saw the club win Division one of the Spartan South midlands league, and gain promotion to the premier division.

Our Youth section set up in September 2000 by David Hyman and the late Philip Greenwold goes from strength to strength, from a beginning of 2 teams to now 22 with a playing membership of around 350 between the Under 7 and Under 18 age groups. We are one of the largest youth football Clubs in the Hertfordshire and London areas let alone the Jewish football set up. The Youth teams' success is built on a strong managerial and coaching foundation and this will continue to underpin our success!

We have always in the past tried to conduct ourselves with honour and pride and LONDON MACCABI LIONS is a continuation of this ethic in our striving for victory. We look forward to a long, healthy, and successful future.

MATCH REPORT – TUESDAY 17 DECEMBER 2013

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

We got the monkey off our backs with 2 goals, a clean sheet and our first win in 8 games. It was important to get that winning mentality back again and after disposing of the Tigers lets hope for some more animal magic by doing the same to the Lions on Saturday.

It wasn't an easy win against a fine Tigers side who were on a good run with only 1 defeat in their previous 5 games. We were perhaps slightly fortunate that refereeing decisions over 2 penalties went our way but overall we were good value for our victory.

After being without both centre forwards on Saturday Martin Skinner and Vinnie Iannone were both back for this game. Also Stuart Stedman, Michael Green and Matt Myatt came into the starting line up and with Graham Hall injured Chris Salmon took over the captain's arm band. With Mike Underwood carrying an injury new keeper Liam Watson came in to make his First Team debut.

The opposition started strongly and Matt Myatt had to produce a goal saving tackle after only 4 minutes to stop Kavanly in his tracks as he tried to burst into our area. Trevor Gibbs was presented with an early shooting opportunity but his fierce drive struck a defender.

During the opening stages Tigers were breaking forward at speed with Bamba Kavanly making some searing runs through midfield. Liam Watson was tested early on with a strong shot which he was unable to hold but he did extremely well to recover quickly to keep out the follow up effort from Jabir Laraba. Both sides got into good positions but were unable to create any tangible scoring opportunities with Tigers best effort coming from Aberito Manuel who fired a shot at Liam Watson then had a free header but again Liam was able to save.

Individually the opposition were neat and tidy on the ball but they were let down by their final passes. As the game wore on we started to take control and do most of the attacking. Martin Skinner found his strike partner Vinnie Iannone with a nice pass with the latter's lob being caught by the keeper. Midway through the first half Chris Vardy's pass fell into the path of Trevor Gibbs who was denied a goal by a great close range save from the keeper.

Trevor Gibbs showed some great dribbling skills to open up some space for a shot by was prevented from doing so by the Tiger's captain Marcus Lansiquot who pulled him back and was rightly yellow carded. Trevor fired the resulting free kick wide.

We were playing some really good stuff and Trevor Gibbs delightful pass gave Vinnie Iannone a great chance but again the keeper made a very good save with a defender half clearing the ball which fell to Trevor Gibbs who shot over. Vinnie Iannone showed great skill to keep hold of the ball in the opposition's area before slipping a neat pass to Martin Skinner who hit the upright from a tight angle. The ball ricocheted to Stuart Stedman who sent his shot over the bar.

Just before the break Tigers won their first corners and Liam Watson tipped Bamba Kavanly's shot over the bar and then Jabir Laraba sent a good effort wide. Last word of the half nearly went to us after Vinnie Iannone was just unable to finish off Martin Skinners ball across goal.

Despite the absence of goals it had been an entertaining half in which we had been the better side for much of it and we deserved a goal or two.

Following some nice link up play with Vinnie Iannone down the left, Stuart Stedman whipped over a good cross which Trevor Gibbs got his head to but couldn't beat the keeper. Later it was Trevor Gibbs turn to be the provider for Vinnie Iannone who produced a nice turn and shot which the keeper tipped over.

A minute past the hour came the first controversial moment when George Tomlin prevented a goal when he stopped a header from Bamba Kavanly on the line. The opposition felt the ball had hit George on the arm and that a penalty (and presumably a red card) should have been awarded. The Referee, who it has to be said was in a good position, said no and waved play on much to the annoyance of the away players. George claimed after the game that he didn't handle it but there were clearly differences of opinion on this matter. Whilst on the subject of George Tomlin he played on the right of defence this time and looked more comfortable there. The 19 year old had probably one of his best games, defending well and was always willing to get forward and provide support out wide.

Five minutes later came the 2nd controversial moment when Chris Vardy went down in the area and this time the Referee did award a penalty. He did check with his linesman and again opinion was divided on the matter with the opposition in particular understandable unhappy at what they saw as rough justice, so much so that their manager was sent off. Trevor Gibbs remained cool and smashed the spot kick home to give us a priceless goal. Score 1-0.

Fuelled by a sense of injustice the visitors attacked with some passion and we had to dig in for a while. In the 75th minute we took a big step towards a victory when we cleared a free kick and it fell to Chris Vardy in our half. With only central defender Marcus Lansiquot standing in his way it was no contest as Vardy burst past him at great pace and despite having run 60 yards was composed enough to slot the ball home and give us a 2 goal lead. It was a terrific piece of play and finishing by Chris Vardy. Score 2-0.

Tigers to their credit kept going but were unable to test Liam Watson further. We nearly extended our lead when Vinnie Iannone struck the foot of the post after good play by Leo Mullett and Martin Skinner and then Martin Skinner tried to lob the keeper who was well out of his goal but still managed to make the save without using his hands. But there were no more goals and we ran out deserved winners.

A good performance and an even better result which moved us up 3 places to 11th in the table and with games in hand over all those above us we could move up higher still. Hopefully it will instil some confidence amongst the players and we can string together a run of good results. It also maintained our unbeaten home record against Tigers, with 7 wins and 1 draw from 8 visits and only 4 goals conceded.

Impish forward man Ryan Caterer has a new nickname at the club. He is now no longer called "The Weapon"-he is now affectionately termed "Goal Machine" by his teammates following a 2 goal salvo in a keenly contested Cup tie that propelled Tring into the Quarter Finals of the Herts Intermediate Cup and placed alongside Leo Mullet at the top of the Reserve goal charts with 6 for the season. Pretty this game was not. Galeforce winds rendered the game farcical at times and reminiscent of Hartlepool v Lincoln on a cold February night. As usual against Herts County sides, Tring played the opposition at their game rather than attempt to keep the ball and play football like they do so well against opponents from higher leagues. Tring took the lead on 15 mins. Lewis Elliot looped a ball into the box, Chris Clark controlled superbly and fed Caterer who smashed home. 1-0 Everything looked good but we went sloppy and kept over hitting the ball with the wind behind us. Bedmond gathered a head of steam and found our defence napping on several occasions. 3 times Tring were caught and relied on Craig Garrett to make fine saves to preserve the lead. On 41 mins, however Bedmond equalised following yet more sloppy defending and Tring feared the worst for a second half against the slope and the wind. Half Time - TAFC Res 1 Bedmond 1 Tring defended well in the second half, keeping their shape and restricting Bedmond to a couple of long range efforts. Billy Jeffrey was moved to midfield and was a revelation, taking players on with confidence and causing a threat. The gales continued. Not much on the pitch happened. Full TIme - TAFC Res 1 Bedmond 1 Going down the slope in extra time, Tring couldn't get it together and Bedmond were sniffing an upset. Fans were taking bets on how far over the bar Jarvo was going to blaze his penalty in the shoot-out.... Chris Clark succumbed to cramp and came off. Paul Jeffrey succumbed to the effects of a mystery virus. Liam Trainor and 17 year old local boy Stuart Howe came on for his debut to provide fresh legs and a bit of much needed spark. It worked. Dan Donald broke on the left and crossed for Stuart Howe. Howe showed energy, pace, determination and not a little skill to get to the ball and lob the keeper. Ryan "Goal

Machine" Caterer was on hand to drive the ball over the line and into the roof the net to crown an excellent personal performance. 8 wins in a row - Tring had somehow ground this out against determined opposition.
