This is the first competitive game that I can recall between our two sides

although we have played a few pre-season friendlies. One of our

statisticians will no doubt tell me I am wrong about this.

Kings Langley were promoted last season and are doing very well in their

first season at this level having assembled a side full of experience.

We had a disappointing result from a terrific game last Saturday losing 4-

2 in a game we did not deserve to lose really.

The Reserves progressed to the next round of The Herts Intermediate

Cup, defeating Hadley 1-0.It was good to see Vinnie returning from a long

lay off

The youth team continued their improvement winning a second game on the

trot against AFC Dunstable who had beaten them 4-1 not so long ago.

The under 15's pick up a good draw against Buck CC.

The A and B Teams continue to find life hard but performances are

improving.

Don't forget our 'exclusive' on Thursday when American singer Stephen

Simmons plays one of his few UK venues on his European tour. An evening

not to be missed.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 1 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s

The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned

which resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected. South Midlands-The 90’s.

In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists

in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game.

The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the

league after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium

We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award.

Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down

in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement

with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A

Vase for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim

round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large

crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference

league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying

on in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position.

However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up

the St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time

Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy.

However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s

Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to

finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going

through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to

Arsenal reserves.

SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then

losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the

League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and

were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James

Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies

team withdrew from their league through lack of players.

SEASON 2013/2014 -First team had a good run in The FA Vase and finished mid-table. Reserves finished

runners up on goal difference and won promotion to the Premier Division. Club purchased the Free-Hold of the ground

and second pitch to ensure future football in the town.

KINGS LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB

A HISTORY

Kings Langley Football Club is one of the oldest in the county, having been formed in 1886, with the village doctor, Frederick Fisher as its first Chairman. Founder members of the West Herts League in the 1891-92 season, Kings Langley also won the St. Mary’s Cup in front of 3,500 people at the Watford Recreation Ground in the same season, retaining it the next year and losing the final on a replay the following year. Early pitches were at Groomes Meadow, Blackwell Meadow and Kings Langley Common and although it has been stated that the Club did not move to Home Park until 1913, the pitch was certainly hosting a 1998-99 match against Hemel Hempstead Town in front of 300 spectators.

After slipping down the divisions, Kings Langley’s first league honour came in 1911-12, winning the Division 3 title, followed by the Division 2 Championship in 1919-20. The following two seasons saw an uncomfortable time in the Herts County League, before returning to the West Herts Division 1 in 1922-23. A similar drop down the divisions led to the Club folding in February of 1930, only to be reformed four months later, with a Division 2 Championship and Webster Cup triumph at the end of the first season. The return to the top flight lasted only two seasons, but two years later Kings Langley topped Division 2 for their fourth divisional title.

1934 saw a new pavilion built on Home Park and this was opened by the future F.I.F.A. president, Sir Stanley Rous, who kept a close interest with his local club.

The Herts County League was then reformed, but Langley took the radical step of joining the Southern Olympian League, taking the second and first division titles in successive years and spending two seasons in the Premier until the outbreak of war.

A 1939 application to play in the F A Cup was accepted in the post of 1945, leaving Kings Langley to raise a side in four weeks! Amazingly, the Preliminary round was negotiated before losing in the first Qualifying round. Missing the first season, Kings were back in the Herts County League, gaining promotion from Division Two in 1946-47. In the five seasons that followed, the First Division title was won twice, runners up spot achieved twice and the St. Mary’s Cup won after a 58 year gap.

Kings Langley regularly competed in the F A Amateur Cup and in September 1949 entertained the famous amateurs of Corinthian Casuals. Although losing 1-3, the match provided plenty of local interest with over 500 watching the game.

Three successful seasons in the Parthenon League followed, but travelling expenses were high, so it was back to the Herts County League in 1955-56 for a tenure that would last for the next 45 years. Gradual improvement led to back to back Premier League titles in 1965-66 and 1966-67, plus a Herts Charity Shield triumph (66-67) and the Aubrey Cup in 1967-68. This was probably the ‘golden period in the club’s history and although the 1971-72 season saw the St. Mary’s Cup won again, relegation followed a year later. Three seasons in Division One culminated with promotion as champions, the forerunner of two seasons up, two seasons down, before another promotion was overshadowed by the loss of Home Park to redevelopment in 1980.

A nomadic existence followed, playing at Oxhey, Rolls Royce and Buncefield Lane and finally the Leavesden hospital ground, until the first weekend of March 1997 saw a dream finally realised as Kings Langley’s senior and junior teams took up the residence of their new ground at Hempstead Road under the banner of the Associated Football Clubs of Kings Langley. The reformation of Kings Langley Youth Football Club in 1989 after a 19 year absence was to play its part, as both junior and senior supporters combined to launch a project of obtaining the Hempstead Road land, laying two pitches and building a pavilion. Sponsors included the National Lottery, Herts. F A, Dacorum Borough Council, Kings Langley Parish Council and the club’s great benefactor, Graham Gaywood, who tragically passed away so soon after the dream was realised. The ground is named Gaywood Park as a tribute to someone who made it all possible.

However, the new home did not bring an immediate turnabout in results and despite winning the Rickmansworth Charity Cup, Langley were involved in relegation battles for the next two seasons. Form improved and as the first season of a new century ended, a top four finish was achieved. This was followed by the heartbreak of losing the title race on goal difference in 2000-01 and the decision was taken that the time was right to apply for a higher level of football. Promotion was accepted to the Spartan South Midlands League at Division One level and while the club held its own with three mid table finishes,

the continuing upgrading of ground requirements by the League at this level saw relegation to Division Two in 2003-04.

The first season in the lower tier was disappointing and Steve Heath was appointed manager for the next campaign. A sixth place was followed by the runners up spot the next season, but ground standards were still an issue and promotion was denied. 2007-08 saw magnificent treble success of League, Division 2 Cup and the retention of the Herts Intermediate Cup This included a club record run of 47 consecutive matches unbeaten in all competitions between 15-09-07 and 15-10-08. Promotion was granted on the basis of floodlights being in operation by late March 2009, but the slow turning wheels of the Local Planning system meant that this deadline was missed by a matter of weeks. Although seating improvements had been made in anticipation of Premier status, this was not considered and the club remained in Division One. The hard work of Andy Mackness and Derry Edgar means that the facilities should now accord with current standards for Step 5 in the pyramid, but by the start of the 2009-10 season, Steve Heath had moved on. He was succeeded by the experienced Paul Hobbs, who took a new young side to an encouraging 7th placed finish, as well as the semi finals of the Herts F A Senior Centenary Cup and quarter finals of the Challenge Trophy and Division One Cup. 2010-11 saw his emerging side further improve to third place and narrowly miss promotion, as the Club celebrated its 125 th anniversary.

2011-12 saw the Club take fourth place in Division 1, win the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy for the first time, as well as being Herts Charity Shield & Division One Cup runners up. Paul Hobbs retired at end of season and Ritchie Hanlon & Paul Hughes were appointed joint managers.

The Youth section continues to flourish and now boasts some seventeen teams ranging from mixed gender teams as young as six up to under-18 level, together with a Ladies Football team.

The club has now been granted FA Charter status and looks to further improve its facilities as well as to progress up the football pyramid.

After last week’s morale-boosting victory at Chesham, Tring Athletics U18’s travelled to

Creasey Park Stadium, home of AFC Dunstable.

Having been beaten 1-4 at the Grass Roots Stadium by AFC Dunstable in September

and also missing some personnel through injury, the omens did not look particularly

good.

However, an indication on how the match would unfold could be seen during the pre-

match warm-ups undertaken by the 2 sides. These were in stark contrast to one another,

with the home team looking casual and relaxed as if the game was going to be a “stroll

in the park” whilst Tring went through their exercises professionally, noisily and with

great enthusiasm.

The feeling that the home side thought they only had to turn-up to win this game looked

evident in the way they started but were taken aback by the sheer tenacity of their

opponents. The opening 20 minutes of the game saw Tring playing with far more

passion and desire, “snapping at the heels” of their opponents, not allowing them to

settle or dwell on the ball and winning the overall midfield battle. All over the park the

visitors wanted the ball far more than their opponents and the high tempo seemed to

really disrupt the home side’s rhythm and playing style.

Upfront, Joe Naylor was once again began causing problems to the home side’s

defensive formation and was ably assisted on the flanks by Ben Seaton and James

Patton.

The last 15 minutes of the first half saw the visitors go “off the boil” a little, which, was

understandable considering the effort they had already given and little by little, AFC

began to gain more possession but with no real cutting edge. Tring goalkeeper, Tyler Ing

did not have to make one single save in the first half and the teams went in level at half-

time with the score 0-0.

The Tring dressing room at half-time was full of positive optimism and a feeling that

now they can, not only compete against sides at this level but actually beat them, so long

as their shape and discipline is maintained throughout the 90 minutes and with this fact

in mind, the side went out for the second half quietly confident they could get something

from this game.

Again, Tring matched the home side in every department with the defensive line-up of

Dan Wills, Matt Stacey, Rildwam Areoye and superbly led by Skipper Anthony

McCormack developing into a mean and formidable unit for opponents to overcome and

they look very confident and assured playing together.

In the middle of the park, James Cullimore, Elliot Howe and Joe Fitzgerald were tireless

in their efforts, with Cullimore’s performance being the pick of the bunch.

Frontrunner Joe Naylor again began” latching on” to several through balls played to

him, which the home defence found increasingly hard to cope with. On bursting through

in to the penalty area on one occasion, early in the second half, Naylor was brought

down for a “stonewall” penalty. Ben Seaton confidently stepped up to duly dispatch the

penalty although the keeper did get a touch on it. 1-0.

Dunstable started to play with more urgency but with little impact but failure to clear the

ball properly, saw Tring give away a cheap free kick in a central position 20 yards out

and were duly punished with an excellent bending finish to make the score 1-1.

Now Tring’s test of strength of character and desire truly began. In recent weeks the

steady improvement of the side’s general performance has been encouraging and they

are not letting minor setbacks affect their overall game-plan and so instead of feeling

sorry for themselves after conceding, they went out looking for another goal.

Their efforts were handsomely rewarded when, the troublesome Naylor again, causing

untold havoc with a “jinky” run in the penalty area was unceremoniously brought down

for yet another penalty.

With more pressure on him to convert his second penalty, Ben Seaton stepped up and

converted with a truly magnificent shot that was powered high and wide of the keeper

and believe me when I say, you won’t see a better penalty finish in the Premiership as

the one witnessed to make it 1-2 to the visitors.

The introduction of Jim Foxcroft and debuts for Henry Tomlin and Tom Stroud did not

cause any disruption to the balance or dynamics of the side and their contribution was

very pleasing and extremely positive. There were also cameo appearances for Archie

Harrison and Antonio Belardo in the dying stages of the game.

Although Dunstable tried to comeback with a low drive that whistled past the post in the

latter stages of the game, they created very little of note and the match finished with a

well-deserved victory for the visitors. Full Time 1-2

This was a great squad performance full of all the attributes needed both personally and

as a team to make a very cohesive and successful football unit. Although sometimes not

that pretty to watch, the hard work, discipline and enthusiasm of all members of the

squad is now starting to reap justifiable rewards – Well done to everyone!

Hadley 0-1 TAFC Reserve team TAFC goals: Reon Thomas

A late winner ensured that the reserves progressed in the county cup where they will

face a trip to Hoddesdon Town reserves in the 2nd round. Report to follow.

Tring ground out an excellent win in the first round of the Hertfordshire Cup at a

blustery Hadley ground. It has been a tough few weeks for the Reserves - 8 out of 10

games away from home, losing players to the First Team and a run of competitive

performances against superior (on paper) opposition producing little reward. They had 7

players out of the squad 18 or under yesterday and the younger lads in particular rose to

the challenge.

Heavy winds meant the first half was lacking in quality but Dan Steadman has now

appeared to get a grip of his back four and the defence looked solid. 17 year old Will

Areoye, in particular, performed with aplomb at Centre Half - and keeper Jack Hopwood

spoke well and was authoritative - sweeping behind his back line. Groom fired at the

keeper on 30 mins. Hard working Joe Naylor fed Wreh who finished but was ruled

offside. This was the only real goal action of the first half. Insomniacs will be hunting

down the DVD to solve all of their issues....

Half Time - 0-0

With Groom injured - Tring introduced the experience of Iannone and Thomas and a

spell of pressure began - with the lads going close from a couple of corners. Vinnie

Iannone was huffing and puffing to good effect in the number 10 role.

On 80 mins came Hadleys best spell of the game with a series of corners and set pieces.

The lads responded valiantly - throwing bodies in front of the ball on several occasions

to deny the opposition with James Cullimore in particular taking one for the team.

The 89th minute brought the moment that saved everyone the torture of extra time.

Cullimore was involved again - clunking a tackle in midfield. Areoye found Iannone,

who Hadley clearly could not be bothered to mark. He darted forward - panther like -

and found Reon Thomas with precision. Reon finished with aplomb to send Tring into

the next round.

widely respected artist in Nashville and Europe and has 6 albums released and has appeared

Bucks CC 0-0 TAFC U15 Youth Team

Great progress today to follow up last week’s cup win as every boy played well

to ensure we picked up our first League point.

We started with a new formation which after the first 10 minutes worked well.

The back four stayed absolutely solid with Samo and Ryan getting good tackles

in and staying disciplined in their positioning.

Matt Cowan did his usual excellent marking job on big Dan and Harry returned

to his best form and was vocal in organising the defence which was great to hear.

Chris and Ferret settled into their deeper holding roles and covered for each other

very well whilst Will D held the ball up well and worked tirelessly as the

advanced centre midfielder.

George and Matt worked hard out wide and provided some good options for

outlet balls and need time to get used to this new shape for us.

Connor had his best game for us so far, playing up top and ran and ran to provide

angles for through balls.

Late in the half it took a wonderful diving save from Elvis to keep our opponents

from scoring.

Lee and Isaac came on in the wide positions and worked very hard for the team,

continuing the pressing game which prevented Bucks CC coming out of defence.

If the first half was level then we dominated the second and should have scored;

Connor was put through but forced wide, Harry had a great chance with a header

from a corner and then we were denied a clear penalty when Chris was tripped.

With the clock ticking down for the first time in the game Dan was allowed to

get a run going and he just kept going through three or four good tackles. He was

finally stopped by Elvis’ face! Literally, as our keepers’ bravery stopped a point

blank shot. The referee stopped play due to the head injury Elvis sustained which

meant that Bucks were denied a goal from the replay. We had earned that bit of

luck.

Connor stepped in to play keeper as Elvis needed a break to attend to his injury

but he returned to see out the last few minutes of a truly determined performance

– our best of the season so far, by far!

MATCH REPORT – SATURDAY 18 OCTOBER 2014

IT'S A BED OF ROSES FOR HERTFORD

The visitors were indebted to brothers Louis and Leigh Rose, who grabbed a brace of goals each, for this solid away victory, which saw them jump above us in the table to 9th whilst we dropped 5 places to 11th.

But we were the architects of our own down fall after conceding 3 goals in an 11 minute spell around half time, 2 of which were from free kicks. We quickly pulled a goal back to give ourselves hope and we put our opponents under some pressure but we failed to put our chances away and were finally sunk with a late goal as we were pushing players forward in search of an equaliser. The final score didn't accurately reflect the closeness of the game never-the-less it was another 3 points dropped in a disappointing run of league games at home in which we have only picked up 2 points from 5 games.

We started positively and our pressing nearly paid dividends when Ollie Butler blocked the keeper's clearance which fortunately for the visitors didn't end up in the back of the net. Paul Jeffrey swung in a great cross, after Greg Deer tapped a quick free kick to him, to find Adam Toone whose shot was deflected off target. The subsequent corner reached Kevin McManus just beyond the far post but his fierce shot just missed its target.

After a slow start Hertford started to get into their stride and they looked threatening on the break. Charlie E Smith tried an early shot that went straight to Matt Evans and then Dajour Buffonge produced a fine cross which the lively Leigh Rose headed wide. Matt Evans was later called into action to deny Charlie E Smith and later the keeper made another good save from Leigh Rose.

Paul Jeffrey was putting his cultured left foot to good use to whip in a free kick that was bundled away to safety with Adam Toone lurking near by. Greg Deer then fired a terrific left foot shot from outside the area that skimmed the bar. We were enjoying a good spell in the period leading up to half time, winning a succession of corners and stringing together some good moves. In the 34th minute a corner bounced around the visitors area before falling to Sam Joliffe who smashed a good shot that produced an equally good save from the keeper who also smothered the follow up effort.

Another Paul Jeffrey cross was crying out for a touch as it arched dangerously across the area but with five minutes to go before the break we got some reward for our good play. Trevor Gibbs slipped a nice pass to Ryan Sturges who went past the defender and fired a left foot shot passed the keeper for a well taken goal, only his second of the season. Score 1-0.

But three minutes later we undid all our good work in the first period by allowing Louis Rose to head home a free kick. It was a well placed header but it was disappointing to concede such a cheap goal from a set piece so soon after we took the lead and just before half time. Score 1-1.

We nearly regained our lead after Ryan Sturges and Paul Jeffrey linked up well with the latter's shot forcing the keeper into a good save. So despite a good half and some promising opportunities we found ourselves all square at the interval. Half Time 1-1

We started the second half badly and Hertford took full advantage within 2 minutes. We were caught out with a lack of cover down our right as Hertford broke quickly and although Matt Evans saved Charlie E Smith's shot he could nothing to stop the winger from slipping the loose ball across our area to Leigh Rose who had the easy task of slotting the ball home into an empty net from close range. Score 1-2.

We were still asleep 7 minutes later when Louis Rose headed home a free kick. To concede from one set piece is disappointing but to allow it to happen twice was careless. Score 1-3.

We immediately made 2 substitutions bringing on Kieran Turner for Trevor Gibbs and Chris Cutler for Michael Green. It was the latter's debut for the First Team and added to the list of youngsters in the squad.

The change worked immediately as 2 minutes later we were given a life line when Sam Joliffe was pulled down in the area by defender Bradley Fraser. The visitor' bench disputed the decision but it looked a clear a foul and Greg Deer showed no mercy by converted the penalty to bring us right back in the mix. Score 2-3.

But Hertford were far from being a busted flush and Matt Evans had to make good saves from Charlie E Smith and Leigh Rose. We were pressing forward and with a little over 10 minutes to go Kieran Turner played Sam Joliffe through and with only the keeper to beat Sam placed his shot just agonisingly the wrong side of the post.

We were seeing a lot of the ball and winning lots of corners. Kieran Turner produced a Dennis Bergkamp moment when he superbly pulled the ball down out of the air and in the same movement volleyed a fine effort just over. Had that gone in it would have been a goal to savour. Sonny Bailey-Aird, who had earlier come on for Ollie Butler, sent in a fine cross to find Kieran Turned who had a couple of shots blocked.

Our desperate search for an equaliser meant we were taking risks and 3 minutes into added time we were finished off when Hertford broke and Leigh Rose grabbed the decisive fourth goal. Full Time 2-4.

Both sides played their part in producing a good entertaining game and although it is disappointing that we came away empty handed we should give full marks to our young team for responding so well to going 3-1 behind to push a strong side all the way.

Clearly we are missing some key players particularly up front, which includes leading scorer Chris Vardy as well as Stewart King and Vinnie Iannone. We also missed skipper Chris Salmon who is such an inspiration in the centre of defence. So it was good to see Stewart and Chris warming up before the game and they should be fit for next week. Also Vinnie was due to play in the Reserves so hopefully the squad will soon be back up to full strength.
