Grass Roots Talk

Good Afternoon and welcome to The Grass Roots Stadium for this

Spartan South Midland Premier Division tie.

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Ampthill Town

to Tring, we hope they enjoy their short stay with us, and have a safe trip

back afterwards.

We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Referee- Mr

Neophytou and his assistants-Mr Campbell and Mr Shacklock

Our guests today are having a difficult season compared to last year when

they had a great run in The Vase, reaching the ¼ finals. Won The Premier

Div. Cup and were contenders for the league. However this is not

surprising as they have had to build a new team after the manager left and

most of the successful squad followed him. They have recently hit some

form and beat Berkhamsted since we last met in The Vase.

We went out of The Vase on Saturday, losing to Norwich Utd 1-0. They are

riding high at the top of their league so this was no disgrace.

We returned to league action on Tuesday when we visited Stotfold. The

young side had to compete against some horrid conditions and did well to

return with a 1-0 win.

The reserves are back in action at Royston today after a mini- break.

The A and B Teams are both in cup action as are the under 15's tomorrow

here at Pendley.

The Under 18's played Wednesday evening but the result was unknown

when going to press.

The first team are at St. Margaretsbury in The Challenge Trophy on

Tuesday

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 1 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s

The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned

which resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected. South Midlands-The 90’s.

In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists

in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game.

The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the

league after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium

We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award.

Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down

in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement

with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A

Vase for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim

round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large

crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference

league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying

on in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position.

However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up

the St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time

Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy.

However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s

Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to

finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going

through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to

Arsenal reserves.

SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then

losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the

League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and

were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James

Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies

team withdrew from their league through lack of players.

SEASON 2013/2014 -First team had a good run in The FA Vase and finished mid-table. Reserves finished

runners up on goal difference and won promotion to the Premier Division. Club purchased the Free-Hold of the ground

and second pitch to ensure future football in the town.

RECENT HISTORY OF AMPTILL TOWN

Ampthill Town finished second in the SML Premier Division last year but

failed to qualify for promotion and the decision led to the resignation of

Craig Bicknell. He ended his three year stint at Woburn Road at the end

of last season and subsequently went to Leighton Town and was followed

by most of last year's players.

Town owed their second place last term to a fine unbeaten run early in

the season which saw them collect the September Team of the Month.

The sequence included good away wins at London Colney, Harefield and

AFC Dunstable although their best win was 8-3 at Hertford while they

also beat Holmer Green 5-0 away later in the term. Ampthill beat

Hillingdon 8-3 at home but they began their FA Vase trail with a 7-0

win over Barking.

They got to the quarter final where they lost to Eastbourne United

having beaten Norwich Utd and Hanwell on the way. Town won the SML

Premier Div cup when they beat Berkhamsted on penalties and lost to

Barton Rovers in the final of the North Beds. Charity cup. Rovers also

beat them in the ealrly rounds of the FA Cup last year and Biggleswade

Town beat them in the semi finals of the Beds. Senior cup.

After losing Bicknell late last term Derwayne Stupple was appointed in

Summer and he has a young local squad. They have struggled for results

but are unbeaten in their last four games including a win over

Berkhamsted. They have lost their Prem Cup title, losing at home to

Leverstock Green and have also been eliminated from the Vase by Tring

Athletic.

BARTON Rovers knocked them out of the Beds. Senior cup while another

home defeat saw Langford put them out of the North Beds. Charity cup.

AMPTHILL Town were promoted to the Premier Divison 3 years ago as

runners up to London Colney and finished fifth in their first year. They

joined the SML in the early 90s after a 30 year stay in the United

Counties League.

Manager Stupple is a former Bedford Town midfield man who has

coached several clubs in the area.

Stotfold 0-1 TAFC First team TAFC goals: Christopher Vardy

WE FEEL AT HOME WHEN AWAY

We picked up 3 good points on the road bouncing back strongly after our FA Vase disappointment 3 days earlier. The conditions were far from ideal, with a heavy pitch, drizzle and a blustery wind but we played some nice football and Chris Vardy produced some great skills to score the all important winning goal midway through the second half. We made 5 changes from Saturday's starting line up and we were a bit short on numbers so we only had 3 subs. The most notable change was the inclusion of Stuart Stedman making his first start in the First Team this season. Now a seasoned campaigner Beamer has made over 500 appearances for the Club and he settled back into the left back role as if he had never been away. The other noticeable feature of our 14 man squad was how young it looked, with 4 teenagers and only 3 players over 24. We made a great start, taking the game to our hosts and making in roads down both flanks, through Luke Dunstan on the left and Ollie Butler on the right, but we were failing to pick out players in the box with our crossing from promising positions. Kieran Turner was reveling in his advanced midfield role and he whipped a dangerous ball across the area which the home keeper did well to claim. Stotfold liked to get the ball forward quickly to pick out their leading scorer Adam Pennington and we had to be on our toes to deal with the threat. Our hosts won a few free kicks and corners but we dealt with the danger very well. Kieran Turner made another good break down the left and he managed to pick out Chris Vardy in the area but the ball was taken off Vardy's toes before he could get a shot in. At the other end Pennington found some space in the inside left channel but he seemed to get caught in 2 minds whether to shoot or cross and in the end he struck the ball harmlessly past the far post. Later Aarone Browne sent a shot wide and Sam Joliffe nearly got on the end of a free kick. After the promising start to the game we lost a bit of impetus and Stotfold enjoyed their best spell of the game in the 15minutes leading up to half time. Their first good opportunity came when centre back Shane Brown released Pennington with a fine pass but Jack Hopwood was out quickly to deny the centre forward diving at his feet to smother the danger. Jack made an equally good save soon afterwards tipping away for a corner a header from Sean Herr following a long throw. These were 2 crucial saves from Jack and ensured we kept a clean sheet. Shortly before the break Chris Vardy produced a delightful back heel to release Kevin McManus who pulled the ball back nicely from the bye line for Ollie Butler. We were waiting for the net to bulge but puzzlingly Ollie didn't pull the trigger. Half Time: Stotfold 0 Tring Athletic 0 Chris Salmon had been playing through the pain barrier since stepping on a nail on Friday so he was replaced at the start of the second half by Greg Deer who took his normal place in midfield. That required some rearrangements with Kevin McManus

moving into central defence which he did seamlessly and Ollie Butler again showed his versatility by dropping into the full back role. Kevin played alongside Adam Toone who had another towering game keeping the opposition's leading marksman quiet. As well as being powerful in the air Adam is equally good on the deck and is still only 23, so could be a permanent feature for many years to come. There was an early scare within 2 minutes of the restart when we allowed a long throw to bounce through for a goal kick with Pennington wrong footed and unable to capitalise on the opportunity. But that was about as good as it got for the home side because after that we hardly gave them a sniff at goal. Kieran Turner headed a Greg Deer free kick over as we started to look menacing going forward. In the 64th minute Luke Dunstan cleverly found some space on left to send in a cross which Chris Vardy nodded to Kieran Turner who volleyed his shot against the bar. But any relief that Stotfold may have felt from that narrow escape didn't last long as 4 minutes later Chris Vardy produced a high quality moment to put us ahead. Kieran Turner providing the pass but Vardy still had a lot to do from his position to the right of the goal near the bye line. He twisted away from the defender and past the keeper to open up the angle to allow him to slot the ball into the net. It was Vardy's 17th goal of the season and a fine piece of skill. Score 0-1. With our confidence lifted we started to apply some pressure and should have wrapped up the game with further goals. Kieran Turner who had a super game went on a nice run and forced the keeper to get down low to save his shot. Later Kieran fired a shot against the post from an acute angle and when the ball fell to Sam Joliffe it looked a goal all the way, but somehow a defender managed to clear the shot off the goal line. Ryan Sturges and Taylor Collins came off the bench and the latter's shot forced the keeper into a good save at his near post. Then following a throw Taylor linked up with Kieran Turner who saw his fine shot kept out by an equally fine save from the keeper Adam Harpur. We were in the driving seat and should have built up a bigger lead but we were holding just a slender lead and Stotfold still had an opportunity to snatch a draw. They won a few free kicks but few if any corners and took these opportunities to sling the ball into our area. Fortunately we were rock solid at the back and Stotfold had few sights of goal. We ran down the clock by holding the ball near their corner flag and winning a succession of throws until the final whistle was blown for a thoroughly deserved victory which keeps our great record going of just one defeat in 12 games against our hosts. After the heartache on Saturday this was just the tonic we needed with the 3 points moving us up 4 places to 11th in table. It also raises the question of why we are so much better playing away than at home. In 10 home games we have averaged 1.1 points per game compared to 2 points a game from 8 away games. If we had been as good playing in Tring as we have on the road we would have 36 points from 18 games which would have put us up to 5th in the table with games in hand. An interesting if academic point which we could put to the test by winning our next game which is at The Grass Roots Stadium on Saturday against Ampthill Town, although we may have to do it without Chris Vardy who strained his hamstring.

TAFC Reserve team 1-4 Corinthians TAFC goals: Stewart King

The Reserves came up against a very strong Corinthian side on Saturday and, after a brave battling display, particularly in the first half - fell short when they tired at the end and were

on the receiving end of some excellent finishes in the last 10 minutes. They had to draft in Keith Eldridge to play in goal and Keith performed admirably, pulling

off several excellent saves during the game, that was - for 60 minutes - an excellent contest.

Tring fell behind immediately when they failed to attack the ball from a corner and left a free man in the box - who netted.

Slowly Tring began to find their feet - shame the same couldn't be said for Tom Cullimore who went to clear a ball and ending up flat on his face in the Hertfordshire mud.

Stewart King went clean through but blasted high and wide. Then, on 30 mins, assisted by James Butler, he went through again and rounded the keeper to finish with aplomb. 1-1.

Tring were on top. Ollie Butler prodded and probed and nearly scored with a delightful chip - a la Glenn Hoddle for Spurs against Watford in the 1980's - but the keeper managed

to tip the ball onto the bar. Half Time - TAFC 1 Corinthian 1

Corinthian came out of the traps and were all over Tring in the second half. Eldridge made a fine save at the feet of a striker but the slick passing and movement of the away team was

bound to bear fruit soon. And it did with a striker cutting in from the right and blasting the ball home.

Tring plugged away and had some spells of pressure. If 16 year old Joe Fitzgerald overcomes his shyness and lack of confidence (ahem) he will be an excellent prospect and

he did very well covering at left back. Naylor went close, King went close again but Corinthian were playing some splendid football on the break - which Tring were simply not used to - and Tring themselves did not possess the same clinical nature in the final third.

Tring conceded 2 more late on but could have no complaints.

Still dreaming of Wembley!

Before the game the bookies had United as a 50/1 shot, after beating

Tring we're now a 20/1 chance!

It was a difficult trip for the team and supporters with the A11, M11,

M25 and A41 all blocked by accidents during the 145 mile drive. Having

struggled through it came as a bit of a shock to find the referee and his

assistants unsure whether the game should go ahead. with the 6 yard box

one end frozen solid. Players safety particularly the keepers was their

main concern, plus the fear that the pitch could end up playing a key part

in the overall result a slip in the box leading to a winning goal. The ref

wanted the views of Duncan McAnally and Damian before making his

decision. Everyone was on tenterhooks whilst we waited for the coach to

arrive, the boys were psyched up ready for the game, it would need to be

bad before Dunc and Damo would call it off, would we want that trip

again on Tuesday?

Duncan was more chilled than the goal mouth and after a good forking the

game was declared on.

Without Cooky and Ben Jones both suspended and Hippo out injured our

bench was looking thin, with Ships Josh Carus and the manager Hilts on

the bench.

Tring playing up the slope were attempting to throw everything at the

Yellows the game was pretty even, both sides cancelling each other out,

Ben Thompson and Mathew Blake were putting the fear of god under the

Tring back four with their pace and movement, whilst our defence ably

supported by Lee Mason were in control.

Duncan had to make one really good save diving low into the corner and

pushing the ball round the post on the rock hard bit of the pitch, brave!

The half came to an end all square.

The second period started much the same, two evenly matched sides

knocking heads, a proper cup tie. Jamie Speller saw yellow just after the

hour but not before the Reds had started to rack up their yellow card

collection. On 70 minutes the game began to turn in the favour of the

Planters, as Tring began to tire the fitness levels of the boys coming

good. Ben Thompson was through on goal the young keeper saved well with

his legs Ben linked with Mathew Blake minutes later again the keeper

saved well from Blakey.

Andy Eastaugh found himself in the refs book, a long clearance down the

left put the winger away, Andy was stronger leaning on their boy who

went down, with the large Tring crowd insisting he was through on goal

and should have been a red card, the ref explained he wasn't clear,

there were other covering defenders and he didn't have the ball under

control not a hard decision. Duncan McAnally was again called on to make

a good save from the free kick.

On 78 minutes the deadlock was finally broken a ball through saw Blakey

bearing down on the Tring Keeper Hopwood, who panicked a little and miss

hit his clearance only as far as Matthew Daniels, who looked at the

keeper out of his goal and picked his spot from over 30 yards out and

lifted it home, 1 - 0 Planters, Danners was the coolest player on the

park even cooler than Duncan McAnally now that's cool.

Tring drew on their last reserves of energy and tried to get back into the

game, Greg Crane and Andy Eastaugh stood strong Josh Carus replaced

Andy Cusack on 89 minutes, immediately putting in a thumping tackle that

resonated around the ground. The ref added a good six minutes but the

boys stood strong, a great result and into the draw on Monday.

The most difficult job was to pick a man of the match, everyone did their

bit in a great team performance, Duncan McAnally was as solid as a rock,

Andy, Greg and Brownie missed little at the back, Danners scored the

important goal and put in a real shift at the front of the midfield

diamond, Blakey worked hard up front but my player of the match has to

go to Ben Thompson, who was a constant threat and put in a massive shift

in all parts of the park.

The Ref and linesman also deserve a mention, they did a great job,

allowing the game to flow whilst staying in control.

Maybe a slightly different view on the game to the one witnessed by

our supporters and no mention of the incident involving one of their

players which was being debated as being a definite yellow or maybe

a straight red card tackle but went unpunished. Maybe this prompted the comments about the officials.

TAFC Youth Team 4-1 Chesham United TAFC goals: Joe Naylor (3), James Hogg

Wednesday 12th November saw The Grass Roots Stadium host the SCFYL derby match between local

rivals Tring Athletic & Chesham United.

Both sides having gained 12 league points apiece, went into the game looking to also extend their

unbeaten runs and make further upward progress in the league.

The opening period of the game saw both sets of players trying to find their rhythm and composure.

Opportunities to exploit were hard to come by as the defensive units on either side of the pitch looked

accomplished and very comfortable in dealing with any problems they had to deal with and scoring

chances were at a real premium

However, on the half hour, Tring’s young and pacey striker, Jack Blair forced the visitor’s keeper into

making a good save with a fierce cross shot and it was Blair’s run and pass with five minutes of the half

remaining that provided his striking partner Joe Naylor, with the chance to go on and beat the keeper with a great finish to make it 1-0 to the home side.

The mood in the home dressing room at half-time was one of cautious optimism. The whole squad knew

that if they kept their work-rate, positive mentality and composure at a consistently high level throughout the remaining 45 minutes they would certainly get something out of the fixture.

The start of the second half once again saw a lot of industry and hard work from both sets of players but it

was Tring who once again had the sharper cutting edge in front of goal and predatory Joe Naylor was once again on hand to apply the finishing touch to claim his and the home side’s second to make it 2-0.

This seemed to have roused the visitors from their slumbers, who after having conceded 2 goals, started to

play their best football of the match, pushing Tring further and further into their own half and applying pressure all over the park. Failure on one occasion by Tring to clear properly was cruelly punished as

Chesham scored to bring them back into the game and this was now the right time to see what sort of

character the home side had when confronted by a setback. 2-1

To their immense credit Tring responded extremely positively and took the game to their opponents who,

throughout the 90 minutes, could not handle the pace of Naylor and when a through ball went through to

the young striker halfway through the second half he gleefully went onto convert for a well-deserved hat-

trick and present the home side yet again with a 2 goal margin. 3-1.

Tring were not yet finished and from a run and cross from debutant Tino Leone down the left flank, the

ball eventually found its way to James Hogg who scored from close range to make it 4-1. The result not

only put the seal on a great performance from the whole squad, it also gave them 3 points and gave notice to other teams in the league that Tring are now a force to be reckoned with!!

There were some great individual performances on the night and the squad’s confidence is beginning to

grow with every positive result gained. Their unbeaten run now extends to six matches and although not one of the “prettier footballing” sides to watch their work-rate and commitment is unquestionable and

most opposition will now not relish playing them.
