Grass Roots Talk

Good Afternoon and welcome to The Grassroots Stadium for this Spartan South

Midland Premier Division tie.

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Hillingdon Borough to Tring,

and we hope you enjoy your short stay with us.

We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Referee- Mr. L Lungarella with

his assistants-Mr. S Beardon & Mr. T Weight. Today’s match is sponsored by- Cambridge Motors of Hemel Hempstead, so we would

like to thank them for their continued generous support.

With only a couple of weeks left it seem strange to be meeting a team for the first

time but this is the case today as we welcome Hillingdon to The Grassroots Stadium.

We meet again at The Middlesex Stadium on May the first for the return game.

Hillingdon are 2 points and one place above us in the league so this game should be

anything but an end of season run out.

At last we broke our losing run last week with a 1-0 win over London Lions and then a

very commendable 0-0 draw against Colney Heath on Saturday.

Colney Heath are the form team at present being unbeaten in the league in 2014, so

this was an excellent result for us.

Hanwell have now taken the lead in the league as other sides near the top start

dropping points, they remain focused and keep picking up the 3 points. Ampthill and

Colney Heath will have to battle out for the runners up spot..

We are pleased to have been awarded the Premier Division Cup Final which will be

played on The 30th April and will be between Berkhamsted and either Holmer Green or

Ampthill

The reserves are still doing well. The away game against Dunstable will be a big decider

in their attempt to lift the league title.

They played a re-arranged fixture on Wednesday against Southall which they won 7-0

to put them top.

We have lots of ADL Cup final over the next few weeks here at Pendley so come along

and look at some of the other local sides you may not have seen before.

Finally enjoy the game and give your support to all involved.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 3 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned which

resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.

South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists in

the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game.

The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the league

after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award.

Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Page 7: Tring Athletic v Hillingdon Borough Sat 12th april 3pm

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down in

March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement with

Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A Vase

for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim round.

In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large crowd

enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying on

in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position.

However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up the

St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time

Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy.

However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s Cup

beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to

finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going through

the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to Arsenal

reserves.

SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then losing

in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the League

we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and were

finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James Bevan

won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies team

withdrew from their league through lack of players.

Hillingdon Borough Football Club - History Founded in 1872 following a meeting of eight local businessmen, Yiewsley F.C. was the forerunner of the modern-day club, changing its name to Hillingdon Borough in 1964 following the formation of the London Borough Councils. The Club flourished in the sixties and seventies with its' main achievements being the FA Trophy Finalists in 1970-71 and the Southern League Runners-up to Cambridge United in 1968-69. The 1984-85 season saw a major downturn in the Club's fortunes with the sale of the Leas Stadium. The original Southern League Club is subject of a recorded history book (1872-1985) by Leigh Edwards , David Shute and Mike Hunter In 1985-86 a merger with Burnham F.C. was not enough to save the Club from extinction and in 1987 the name of Hillingdon was lost completely. A gap of almost four years left the Borough in the wilderness with no ground and no effective leadership or finance. Hillingdon Borough F.C. was re-formed in 1990 when officials of the Chiltonean League side, Bromley Park Rangers, took over the Ruislip F.C. Ground at Breakspear Road and together with four of the former Hillingdon Borough directors, formed the new club - Hillingdon Borough (1990) F.C. The four directors stayed for two seasons and it was then left to the nucleus of Bromley Park Rangers Committee Members to carry on. To help realise the potential of the club, the club purchased the 12 acre site at Middlesex Stadium with a view to developing the site, arena and training facilities A new company, Staravis Ltd., was formed and one of the first major projects was to turn the pitch through 90 degrees to have sufficient space around the pitch and ground to meet the higher league requirements. This involved removing some 50 trees, repositioning 3 of the floodlights, re-draining and relaying the lower half of the pitch. Further work was completed with a concrete wall to surround the Ground. Progress since has been slow and sure. Unfortunately, the infamous red tape problem reared its ugly head, and progress was temporarily halted pending several open enquiries and Council approvals. Finally, the official go ahead was given and The Directors of the Club have worked tirelessly since to push this project forward and raise the necessary finances. The first stage of re-development was completed in November 2004 when the present owner assisted the club by building and launching ‘Astro1’ a state of the art full size Astroturf pitch utilising third generation materials which make it one of the best training facilities in the area. Continued work goes on into progressing the development plans which should include, ground improvements including a new stand and Covered standing terraces, landscaped grounds to house several mini soccer, youth and an additional senior pitch, an extended club house & functions area together with improved car parking and a tree planting scheme will be initiated. The summer of 2005 and 2006 saw work on improvements to the stadium which eventually achieved the ‘D’ grade now required by Level 4 Clubs.

On the football side, the work in the first season in 1990 was towards gaining entry into The London Spartan League which was achieved. Honours for the club were hard to come by, however a purple patch in the late 90’s saw the Club winning the Spartan League Cup in 1997 whilst being runners up in the London Senior Cup a few weeks later. In consecutive seasons of 95/96 and 96/97 Hillingdon Borough was runner up in The Spartan League just missing out on the Championship by the smallest of margins. The Youth Section of the Club was formed in 1990, when four teams broke away from Alpine F.C. and in later years were joined by teams from Hillingdon Eagles. With the

Page 9: Tring Athletic v Hillingdon Borough Sat 12th april 3pm

introduction of our Saturday morning Coaching School, the Youth Section has gone from strength to strength with many players progressing through our successful Under 18 set-up to play for the First Team. The amalgamation of The Spartan & South Midland Football League in the late 90’s produced a stronger football League & our first major success was achieved at the end of the 2004/2005 season when the Club defeated London Colney in the Final of the Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy by 4-1 on an excellent night for the club at Hanwell Town FC. This was co-incidentally achieved exactly eight years to the day of their last cup success. Season 2005/06 saw the club go from strength to strength and both teams, the one on the field and the one off the field, ensured a return back up the pyramid to the newly formed Southern League Division One South & West following the successful ground grading, PLUS an unprecedented appearance in the FA Vase Final at St Andrews, Birmingham City FC against Cheshire side Nantwich Town. Although suffering a 3 – 1 defeat, the season will be long remembered for our great cup runs and league campaign, finishing runners up to Oxford City in the League on goal difference and also runners up in the Challenge Trophy and Floodlit Cup. Two years followed in the Southern League South and West Division, culminating in winning the Southern League Cup against Cleveden, in a two legged affair, having already beaten three other Premier Division sides on the way to the final. At the beginning of the 2008/09 season, we lost our sponsor just before the start of the season, and without a budget, we also lost manager Steve Ringrose and virtually all of the players who had given us success. We played Enfield in the Final of the Middlesex Charity Cup, left over from the previous year. With a completely new team we put up a good show before losing in extra time. We were switched to the Ryman League where we struggled to compete. Half way through the season Steve Hale was appointed as First team manager and although he produced a good team it was not enough to stave off relegation, and we returned to the Spartan South Midland League for the 2009/10 season. After the resignation of Steve Hale after a run of disappointing results, John Nolan was appointed manager in mid season, his reign, however was short lived and Gary Meakin, along with Steve Emanuel were drafted in towards the end of the season. They had to draft in a whole new squad of players and managed to stave off relegation with a late run of wins. In the following summer, Hillingdon Borough came within inches of folding entirely when the club Chairman, Gamdoor Dhaliwal resigned and the remaining committee were left leaderless and without a penny. Fortunately Mick Harris, (a local business man and father of Ben Harris who played at Birmingham in the FA Vase final) stepped in and filled the void. Gary Meakin continued as first team manager for the 2010/11 season and started well, although results declined into the winter. With just two months left of last season to play, Meakin left to take the vacant Northwood job and left the club in a world of trouble, having only 8 days left to sign any new players. Steve Hawkins took on the role of caretaker manager and brought Jess Smith to the club as his assistant. The pair did a fantastic job, under very difficult circumstances and Jess Smith was soon after given the opportunity of being the first team manager for the 2011/12 season and finished a respectable 10

th place and took the club to its first cup final since 2008. Jesse

and Gary unfortunately resigned early on in their second season and Jason O’Conner and football icon winner Sam Hurrell stepped in to fill the position.

MATCH REPORT – SATURDAY 5 APRIL 2014

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE - PREMIER DIVISION

TRING ATHLETIC (0) 0 COLNEY HEATH (0) 0

The score line suggests this was a dull end of season game but that was not the case for this was an evenly contested encounter with both sides enjoying moments of ascendency, with the visitors edging the first half whilst we took the honours after the interval.

This was a big test for our young guns - after a disappointing run of recent results, alleviated by a narrow but fully deserved 1-0 win in midweek, we faced an in-form Colney side on an unbeaten run of 13 games and still nursing ambitions of promotion from their 3rd placed spot in the table. Julian Robinson and Ian Richardson will be delighted that the team competed on equal terms against such difficult opponents and we could even have sneaked a win with a late goal.

With regular keepers Liam Watson and Craig Garrett unavailable, we brought in Luke Midwinter and the youngster (who recently turned 19) put in a super performance on his debut looking very assured between the posts despite being put under pressure by the visitors at every opportunity.

There was a welcome return for Adam Toone from injury and he took his place in defence alongside Chris Salmon and Ollie Butler in an attacking 3-5-2 formation. There was also a return for Trevor Gibbs after a few games out and he played in the centre of a hard working midfield with Lee Benning and Graham Hall, with Ryan Sturges and Paul Jeffrey providing the width. That allowed us to play Taylor Collins and Chris Vardy up front.

Colney centre forward Aaron Clarke, who has notched 23 league goals this season, was a live wire and constant threat with his pace and direct running. He cut in nicely from the right and his shot was saved by Luke at the 2nd attempt. Moments later Clarke was inches away from getting on the end of a penetrative cross to the far post.

The visitors were doing most of the attacking during the early stages but we were defending well and looked solid at the back. There was a comic, but painful incident for one Colney player, when the visitor's left back Jay Welsh struck his cross so hard that it smashed into Matt Standen midriff and winded him with the ball bouncing off harmlessly for a goal kick. A less powerful delivery might have yielded a return.

But as the half wore on we started to show our attacking intent putting together some good moves. From a throw Chris Vardy laid off a nice pass to Graham Hall who skilfully took the ball in his stride and from inside the box sent his shot just wide of the far post. The groan of disappointment indicated that Graham felt it was a good opening.

Luke Midwinter showed his bravery by tipping a dangerous cross away at the far post under pressure from a number of Colney players after a cleared corner had been played back into the area. Chris Salmon who had gone up for a free kick was just unable to reach the ball after it had been returned into the visitor's box.

Colney took every opportunity to whip in crosses from open play and from set pieces but Luke Midwinter and his defenders did exceptionally well to repel the danger. The visitors big centre back and captain Glenn Draper did manage to get his head to a corner but his effort went wide. There was a tricky moment when Rhys Lawrence cheekily took a free kick early as our keeper was lining up the wall but Luke was quick to get across his goal and superbly tip the ball away. As the Referee was moving our wall back 10 yards at the time it would have been a controversial moment had the ball found the net and a goal awarded.

Page 24: Tring Athletic v Hillingdon Borough Sat 12th april 3pm

A nice move saw us opened up the Colney defence down our right but Chris Vardy was caught in two minds about whether to shoot or cross and in the end the keeper was able to save. There was a hairy moment in added time at the end of the first half when Luke Midwinter was unable to keep hold of a good cross from Jay Welsh, but he did enough to put off Aaron Clarke who was lurking around.

A good half ended goal less and whilst the visitors had been the better side we had defended well as a team and there wasn't much to choose between the teams. Half Time: Tring Athletic 0 Colney Heath 0

At the restart Colney replaced leading scorer Aaron Clarke with Kevin Ashwood presumably due to an injury. We started the second half well and proceeded to enjoy more possession and look the better side but again both defences were on the top of their game and chances were at a premium.

The momentum had swung in our favour but from our corner Colney broke quickly and Kevin Ashwood fired a good chance over. Our visitors were trying to catch us on the break and later Ashwood and Jack Coombs sent headers wide but Luke Midwinter was not called into any serious action during the second 45 minutes.

Ryan Sturges produced some lovely skill to get into a good position and find Graham Hall with an accurate pass. Graham struck a firm shot which the keeper spilled and Chris Vardy and a defender battled for the loose ball with Vardy just missing out on converting the chance.

With time running out Paul Jeffrey struck a fierce free kick that just cleared the bar. Then deep into added time we were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position on the edge of Colney's area. The keeper failed to keep hold of Graham Hall's fine strike and when Adam Toone picked up the loose ball things looked promising but Adam fired his shot into the side netting. To be fair to Adam he was at an angle to the goal.

A good game but with both defences in commanding form there were few genuine scoring opportunities. Both teams had their good spells and a draw was a fair result.

Full Time: Tring Athletic 0 Colney Heath 0

This was a good performance against a good side and we should be pleased at keeping our 2nd clean sheet in 3 days and with a hard earned and deserved point. Our next game on Saturday is again at home when we entertain Hillingdon Borough who are one place and 2 points above us in the Premier Division. League London Lions 0-1 TAFC First team

TAFC goals: Graham Hall A Graham Hall special at the start of the second half was enough to tame the Lions and take all 3 points. After a fairly even first half we took control after the break and should have won by a bigger margin. We could even afford to miss a penalty. The home side came up to the Premier as Champions of Division 1 but they have struggled at the higher level winning only 2 league games all season and are only being kept off the foot of the table by goal difference. Only 3 players on their team sheet were listed in the programme which suggests they have had a big influx of new players and they certainly performed with heart and spirit. They didn't have a shot on target all game and didn't look like scoring but they kept going to the end and with only one goal separating the sides they were still in with a shout until the final whistle. The game was played at Hemel's ground , where we have won a few cup finals in the past, but our mission was not about collecting silverware but to halt a run of defeats and pick up some much needed points. We certainly started positively taking the game to our opponents with some sharp attacking play. In the 10th minute Graham Hall slipped a sumptuous pass through to Reon Thomas in the area and although the ball was on his favoured left foot he surprisingly choose to cross the ball rather than shoot. The danger was cleared and a great opportunity was lost. We then won 3 corners on the bounce and then soon afterwards won a 4th but we were unable to take advantage of these set pieces. Lions liked to get the ball forward quickly and their centre forward Benji Weinberger claimed there was a handball from his cross but the Referee was unimpressed. Midway through the half we produced a lovely move down the right involving Ryan Sturges and Graham Hall which resulted in the latter whipping over a superb cross to the far post. Stewart King from point blank range headed the ball against the bar and he seemed to be caught by surprise when the ball bounced back to him as he failed to get a good connection and the keeper was able to gather the ball. This was a great opportunity to have opened the scoring. Later Stewart King jinked his way round several defenders in the area but the home keeper Jordan Davidson, who had a fine game, was alert and came off his line quickly to snuff out the danger. We were defending quite comfortably but we got caught out when 2 of our players got in each others way just before the half hour mark and a Lion's player broke down the left and sent over a great cross to pick out Benji Weinberger but his powerful shot was blocked. A frantic half ended with honours even and no goals scored. Half Time: London Lions 0 Tring Athletic 0 Three minutes into the second period we were awarded a free kick on the edge of our opponents area. The home players were unhappy about the decision and their chagrin got worse when Graham Hall produced one of his specials to whip the ball around the wall at pace into the net. The keeper got a hand to it but couldn't keep it out and we took an early lead. Score 0-1. We went on to control most of the second half restricting the home side to a few set pieces and the fact that we didn't win by a bigger margin was down to profligacy, some tenacious defending by the home side and some great saves from their keeper.

Page 26: Tring Athletic v Hillingdon Borough Sat 12th april 3pm

A few minutes after taking the lead the keeper beat a shot away from Stewart King after he had cut in along the bye line, with the home defenders claiming with some justification that should have had a free kick. Chris Vardy showed a clean pair of heels to the right back and although his cross was missed by Reon Thomas it fell to Ryan Sturges who fired his shot over although it did take a slight defection. Immediately afterwards Lee Benning tried his luck from range after a good passing movement but the keeper was alert to the danger, Benji Weinberger was ploughing a lonely path up front without much success or support but he never gave up competing for every ball. Our centre back partnership of Chris Salmon and young Ollie Butler (can that boy play everywhere!) looked solid and strong and gave little away. The home side had a chance to put us under pressure when they were awarded a free kick midway through the second half. The home defenders piled forwards but Liam Watson came off his line to punch the ball to safety. Soon afterwards Benji Weinberger went on a nice little run but his shot from distance went harmlessly wide. Reon Thomas had a shot blocked following a Paul Jeffrey corner and Taylor Collins who came off the bench showed great skill to wriggle his way past a defender on the bye line and smash a shot which the keeper did very well to beat away. Later Taylor latched onto a superb flick from Chris Vardy but he just over ran the ball and Jordan Davison was off his line in a flash to smother the shot. Despite some great opportunities our lead was still slender but with 6 minutes to go an off the ball incident resulted in Lawrence Judah being sent off and we were awarded a penalty. You would have put your house on Graham Hall grabbing his 16th goal of the season but his spot clipped the outside of the post and the home side were let off the hook again. We created another goal scoring possibility when Chris Salmon headed Paul Jeffrey's free kick into Sam Joliffe's path but the midfielder was unable to convert the opportunity. Into added time Lions had a last chance of an equaliser when they pumped a free kick into our area but once again Liam Watson was alive to the danger and not only did he come out and catch the ball he also instigated a quick break which resulting in Chris Vardy being denied a late goal by a superb save by the Lion's keeper, with a defender nearly smashing the ball into his own net as he tried to clear the danger. That was the end of the action and we ran out deserved 1-0 winners. Full Time: London Lions 0 Tring Athletic 1 A much needed and fully deserved win against spirited Lions side who ran their socks off. Our next action is a tough encounter at The Grass Stadium against a tough Colney Heath side whose match in midweek at London Tigers was abandoned. League Shield Royston Town 0-0 TAFC Reserve team

It is the scarcity of the goal that makes football the greatest game on earth and makes sports like basketball a mind numbing spectacle. Riveting tactical battles, cat and mouse, with well regimented defences on top. Goals are rare and heroes can be made by scoring one. Everyone remembers Bobby Stokes goal for Southampton against Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup Final and Roger Osborne's solitary effort for Ipswich in 1978. Who can forget Andy Gray's winner for Wolves over the European Champions Nottingham Forest in the League Cup Final of 1980? The only goal of the game - hurtling towards the massed ranks of Wolves fans behind the goal in delight. By contrast, who remembers Michael Jordan's 11th basket against the Boston Celtics in 2001. Absolutely no-one. And most of all - who cares? This Shield game, that Tring needed to win in order to ensure progression at Royston's expense was a riveting battle of wills that would have had the mastermind of catenaccio, Helenio Herrara, purring with delight. Due to unavailability and injury, Tring had to ring the changes again, bringing in Jamie Irons at left back for a debut and Bradley Wilkinson as the lone man up front. Royston were strong but Tring were combative - Smethers and Elliot back to form, Jack Thomson fit and actually running about this week. Chances were at a premium. A Royston forward headed just over but Tring were just about winning the battle and on top. Set pieces and corners were being won. The ball being hurled into the box. Wilkinson was proving a handful and headed wide. Caterer was tenacious and fired wide from the edge of the box. Dan Donald, making his first start for the club, was effective and probing on the right. The defence was holding strong. It was gripping stuff. Half Time - Royston Town 0 TAFC Res 0 Royston jiggled things around at half time and came out looking a bit fresher. They began to gain the uppper hand in the middle but still Tring's defensive shape was good. the game ebbed and flowed but the keepers remained largely untroubled. With the clock ticking, Tring began to push men forward to try and get the win they needed. Smethers was withdrawn and notorous hell raiser James Butler put up front with Wilkinson. Royston didn't know whether to stick or twist. More balls into the box. Thomson propelled a dangerous free kick into the wall. On 90 mins, a cross came over and Wilkinson met it - but the ball drifted wide. The Referees whistle brought an end to the entertainment and a resolute Tring can be pleased with a return to form against dangerous opponents. And the fans went away happy too. Who needs Suarez, Messi, Ronaldo...... or Michael Jordan? Team - Garrett, Steadman D, Irons, Elliot, McManus, Toone, Donald (Cullimore), Smethers (Butler J), Wilkinson, Thomson, Caterer (McFarland)
