Good Afternoon and welcome to The Grassroots Stadium for this Spartan South

Midland Premier Division tie.

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Colney Heath to Tring, and

we hope you enjoy your short stay with us.

We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Referee- Mr.M Chisholm, with his

assistants-Mr.J Anand & Mr.J Fowler. Today’s match is sponsored by- Richard Lovelace, so we would like to thank him for his

Here we go with another tough game as the season starts to draw to an end. Having

played the first second and 5th in our last 4 games we now have to contend with the 3rd

placed side who are very much in form at the moment being un-beaten in the league in

2014.

We met a few weeks ago when we lost 2-0. This was probably a fair result although until

a treble substitution was made by Heath we were very much in the game.

Last Saturday we let a 1 goal lead slip through our fingers and as with the previous few

games against the top sides we have played well without getting the luck you need to

get a result some times.

We played London Lions on Wednesday and won 1-0 the goal coming from Graham Hall.

The title still looks to be going to Hanwell Town who are a point behind but with 4

games in hand of Ampthill. Colney will be hoping their form continues as they could

finish runners up.

The reserves are still doing well and although it was disappointing to loose to

Berkhamsted, their first defeat in normal time since October. This was in the Shield

and they still have a good chance of winning their league. The away game against

Dunstable will be a big decider in this.

They have drawn their last 3 games and will feel unlucky not to have won all three,

especially against Harefield Utd.

We have lots of ADL Cup final over the next few weeks here at Pendley so come along

and look at some of the other local sides you may not have seen before.

Also next Saturday we are holding a quiz night which is always a great evening.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 3 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned which

resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.

South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists in

the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game.

The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the league

after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award.

Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down in

March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement with

Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A Vase

for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim round.

In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large crowd

enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying on

in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position.

However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up the

St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time

Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy.

However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s Cup

beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to

finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going through

the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to Arsenal

reserves.

SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then losing

in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the League

we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and were

finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James Bevan

won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies team

withdrew from their league through lack of players.

COLNEY HEATH FOOTBALL CLUB . . . A Brief History

The “Magpies” were founded in 1907 and played their early football in the Hatfield District League and,

after the 1st World War, joined the Mid Herts League, where the 3rd team played until recently. Earlier

records indicate the winning of a Harcourt Cup but in is believed that this was Junior football some 18

month earlier, 1905-6.

Success was a long time coming - 1935-36, and was disrupted by the 2nd World War. The golden era of

football came from 1946 through to 1960 when the club won the Mid Herts Benevolent Shield twice, the

Bingham Cox Cup, Division 1 and Premier Division titles.

In 1952 the switch was made from Fuzzen Field to the Recreation Ground and into the Herts County

League. Success continued with two Playing Fields Cups, the Aubrey Cup twice, Division 2, Division 1

and Premier titles. This culminated over the Easter weekend in 1960 with the Herts Intermediate Cup and Aubrey Cup double. The Reserve side also completed a double in 1958 winning both Cup and League.

Odd trophies were picked up in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s but these were pretty barren years on the field.

Off the field, however, the club fought for permission to use its old clubhouse. This was secured with

leases still running today, but in August 1988 while modernising the building, the club burnt down. Without a clubhouse, the Magpies, playing from a Portacabin, gained entry to the Premier Division. A new

clubhouse was built in 1989 and an extension added in 1993, along with post and rails. Floodlights were

erected in February2000.

The wish to play South Midlands football eluded the club with 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 4th finishes from 1994 - 1998,

when second place would have been enough. Centenary Trophies back to back and another Aubrey Cup

were won but the Herts County title only came in 1999/2000, when coming from 15 points behind in

January to win by 10 points from rivals, Wormley.

The club’s ambition was to gain Premier Division status and with it FA Cup entry. Finishes of 5 th 3rd 5th 6th

and 5th were not enough in the initial seasons, despite numerous semi-final appearances and consecutive

Charity Cup successes in seasons.(2001/2 and 2002/3) The South Midland Reserve Challenge trophy was collected in 2004/5.The First Division title eventually came in 2005/6. With this came the Premier Division

and the FA Cup. We are now in our 6th season and steadily improving picking up the Premier Division Cup

in 2010/11 with a 2-0 win against Leverstock Green. Last years FA Cup saw us through to the Ist

Qualifying Round a feat which we hope will become a regular event along with the continuing of ground improvements to the fore with the help of our local ground-share partners St Peters.

THE MANAGERS AND THE PLAYERS

As with all clubs, the Heath - or the Magpies - as they are more commonly known now, had its own breed

of characters throughout the years. The pre war sides, would have been drawn from entirely local players.

Sides would have featured an Allen, a Franklin, or a Littlechild. In recent times a Whitehead or an Eames.

The most well known club man was without doubt the manager around the War Years who later went on to

hold positions in The County League and Herts FA whom he served for many loyal years. This was Jesse Saywell.

In the olden days it was eleven players and the manager, where a Committee picked the side. Assisting off

the field were Messrs Pickett, Archer, Kiff and Costain. C S Kiff ‘Charlie’later became Secretary of the club

and the Mid Herts League producing the League Centenary brochure in 1993. Players of this time included Roy Turner who went on to Barnet and Jimmy Whiting and Dickie Last who went on to St Albans, then

both top amateur sides in the Country. Last and Whiting both returned in the 70’s. They helped to win the

trophies of the 50’s.

Many players of the sixties were drawn away to the emerging London Colney and latterly Selby but had

their roots and early times for the Magpies of this period. The foes of these years were North Mymms, Redbourn, Markyate and of course London Colney.

During the emergence of Sunday ‘factory’ football of the sixties the club slipped down the reconstituted

County League. Con Patient had a few years at the helm where he had an up and coming star in Ian ‘Grumpy’ Whitehead. Grumpy went on to captain both St Albans and Stevenage and later returned to

manage for a year in the early 90’s. Another of Con’s stars was Tony Chapman, who must have had the

longest throw ever. It is alleged that Tony injured himself slipping in the Marble Halls at Highbury when he

was with the other Magpies, Newcastle!

Geoff Blundell along with Jim Eames dragged the sides along after this with the assistance for a short

period (6 games) of Ronnie Dukes. Ronnie was the famous City manager at the time of the Torquay United

FA Cup tie. Torquay complained that they had no soap, so Ronnie took a case along for the replay.

Malcolm Waller a centre forward under Geoff Blundell had a spell leading the side of mainly Hatfield boys

during the 80’s. Geoff did provide us with the ‘legend’ who served us well before departing to play for and

later manage Hertford. ‘Lege is of course Dave Whitehead. Dave scored over 200 goals for Hertford before

moving to Potters Bar and then back home, where he continued to score goals until breaking a leg in 2002.. Tony Draper then had a spell before the most successful side of the late 80’s was managed by Ian Yule, who

plucked stars from all over the place. He was a successful Sunday League manager but still ended getting

the sack after failing to produce the goods with his aging all-stars in the Premier Division of the County

League. Laird Budge (Spurs kit man) and Dave Lawrence ex City and Bishops Stortford skipper in their Trophy

days had a spell before the club turned to ex Watford Coventry and Irish International, Pat Morrissey. Pat’s

first job was to save the club from relegation. He kept the side up on a goal difference of one goal on the last

day of the season back in 1993,at then Champions Sandridge, after being 15 points adrift at Xmas after taking over from Frank ‘postman’ Patrick. Pat was unable to fulfil the promotion dream but did bring Cup

success with Centenary Trophies and a Charity Cup. ‘Grumpy’ had a year then Pat returned from Hemel

leaving us with ‘Shag’ Jeggo. Pat is sadly no longer with us. Darren, to give (Shag) his correct name did not

really possess stars, other than Welsh International Malcolm Allen and a talented group of Stevenage Trainees, but kept us there or thereabouts in a plan to get us further up the ladder, both on and off the field.

He introduced the club to ‘Sven’ O’Vell and since then between them the Aubrey Cup and the

Championship, along with successful 3rd and youth teams have provided us with what you have today.

Geoff, like Pat gave us Cup successes and got us very close to the position we felt we ought to be in but handed the reins to Craig ‘Jonno’ Johnstone to pursue the grail.

Craig almost single handedly fulfilled this dream in 2005/6 after an amazing unbeaten run of league 18

games (including 14 straight wins at the start of the season) that has carried us to our first Senior South

Midlands title. The title winning season saw us score 106 league goals conceding only 27, with 26 wins, 3 draws and 3 defeats.

We are now into our second Centenary having come a long, long way. The FA Vase is now a regular

feature; we have improved our league position over five seasons in the Premier Division (16 th, 15th, 12th 5th

and 5th) and won the Premier Cup last year.2011. The managerial pair of ex-Magpie players, Scott Lacey (102 club goals) and Wesley Awad called it a day and we hoped to continue the pattern with Kevin Cooper

and Glenn Draper. However despite their best efforts and an indifferent start we had to turn to the

experienced local ex-pro Gary Phillips. He donned the gloves for Barnet before managing at Aylesbury,

Hemel Hempstead and Grays before taking time out to refresh himself at the Rec. After a few months the ‘professional lure’ of a coaching position at League 2 Stevenage proved too much and so we find ourselves

with a Parry / Beels combo. Glen played over 250 games for Cheshunt before a caretaker spell gave him the

whiff of a manager’s office and Mark was a former number one at Broxbourne Borough leading them to a

Challenge Trophy success at Colney Heath over London Colney in 2010. Like previous generations they all wish to make their mark.

It is hoped that when the Saywell’s, Kiff’s, ‘silver fox’ Morrissey and the numerous Littlechild’s look down

on us they approve of what they started and what continues today. After all, it’s still only a game!

TAFC End of Season Awards Evening - Friday 16th May Bar open from 7pm and the Clubs Annual Awards evening will commence at 8pm. Each

team has Players Player and Managers Player of the Year Awards, plus a Supporters First Team Player of the Year Award. In addition there are various other important

awards such as Clubman and the evening is an opportunity to celebrate the season past

and thank all those who have worked hard on behalf of the Club.

Tring Athletic Shows its Heart with Life Saving Defibrillator The Club has purchased a life-saving new defibrillator, with the help of The Football

Association (FA) and British Heart Foundation (BHF).

In a unique partnership between BHF and The FA, more than 900 defibrillators have been made available to clubs at Steps 1 to 6 of the National League System and clubs in the Women’s Super League to help save the lives of cardiac arrest casualties. Two thirds

of the cost of the defibrillator was provided to the club by The FA and BHF.

Tring Athletic is the latest club to install a defibrillator, giving players, staff and fans

access to the equipment needed to save lives in their community. The club was also given information about Hands-only CPR, which was made famous for the BHF by

football legend Vinnie Jones.

A defibrillator, also known as an Automated External Defibrillator or AED gives the heart

a controlled electrical shock during cardiac arrest.

The British Heart Foundation has already helped place 11,000 defibrillators in the

community since 1996. Since the charity launched Hands-only CPR last year, more than

30 lives have been saved by the technique.

he is running for a very good cause and on behalf of the Shooting Star CHASE Children’s Hospice, which provides wonderful facilities and care to children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families.

New Team Management Required (posted Tue 25th Mar 2014) We have a vacancy for a Team Manager and Coach to run our “A” Team who play in the West Herts Saturday League Premier Division. The Club run First and Reserve Teams in

higher levels of the football pyramid and the “A” team is a vital link in the development of young players supported by experienced players from other teams. We also run a “B” Team in the West Herts league Division 2 and players will move up and down according

to their ability and development needs. Season 2014-15 will also see the addition of a new Youth U18 team playing mid-week – more details to follow shortly.

New Under 18's Youth Team (posted Thu 27th Mar 2014) We will be entering a new Under 18’s Youth Team into the Southern Counties Floodlit

Youth League for Season 2014-15 and expect to be playing in the Olympian Division which this season included many local teams.

We will also be entering the F A Youth Cup.

The Team will be managed by Nick Seaton who has a wide experience running youth football and he will be assisted by former Aylesbury United player Matt Hayward and Coach Danny Corcoran.

Matches will be played at The Grass Roots Stadium with training at RAF Halton.

A Trial Match has been organised for Saturday 5th July – further details will appear on the Club’s website www.tafc.co.uk in due course.

This was the third time the sides have met this season and Hoddesdon have come out on top all three times. Although the weather was sunny there was a strong crosswind and the pitch was very bumpy creating difficult conditions for both sides. Athletic again had to make changes due to players unavailable and injuries and could only field two substitutes. Hoddesdon started the better and should have taken the lead after just 2 minutes. Full back George Tomlin under hit a back pass to keeper Craig Garrett but Hoddesdons centre forward Ben Andreos' shot hit the post before running along the goal line where it was cleared by Athletics defence. Athletic then had a free kick on the edge of Hoddesdons area, Graham Halls effort just going wide with the keeper well beaten. Athletic were now growing in confidence and duly opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Chris Salmon, with one of his clever runs, headed in from a corner. Hoddesdons defender Michael Elliott was rightly booked following a cynical foul on Stewart King who had pushed the ball past him. In the 35th minute, and from another Athletic corner, Stewart King nearly scored again but the ball was cleared off the goal line. Athletic just about deserved to be ahead at the interval, as Hoddesdon for all of their possession did not test keeper Craig Garrett during the whole of the first half. .Half Time: Hoddesdon Town 0 1 Tring Athletic Hoddesdon started the second half the stronger bringing the first save of the match from keeper Craig Garrett in the 53rd minute. Just 3 minutes later they equalised. A fiercely disputed free kick being awarded just outside of Athletics area, Ben Andreos took the free kick which took a wicked deflection off Athletics wall wrong footing the hapless Craig Garrett. In the 63rd minute Stewart King was played through by Ryan Sturges but his lob went wide of the target. Hoddesdon brought on Gomes and Wingrove in the 44th minute for Brandon and Williams. Neither side were creating anything until the 68th minute when Hoddesdon took the lead.

Hoddesdon were awarded another fortunate free kick. Billy Wingrove lost control of the ball and then collided with Ryan Sturges, the referee saw this as a foul, the resultant free kick was played into Athletics area and the visitors appeared to have several opportunities to clear the danger, however the ball fell kindly to the unmarked Andreos in the area to slot home. Athletic had again been undone by set pieces but can consider themselves unlucky to have been penalised in the first place. Athletic brought on Reon Thomas and Sam Joliffe for Stewart King and the injured Stuart Steadman. Athletic were pushing for an equaliser winning a number of free kicks and corners. In the 77th minute Wingrove became the second player to be cautioned following a later tackle on Reon Thomas. With 90 minutes up and playing added on time Athletic won another corner, the ball was cleared to an Athletic player who was fouled. Paul Jeffreys lined the ball up and hit a tremendous shot which was bound for the top corner until home keeper Purdue brought off an excellent save, following that the referee blew for time. TAFC goals: Daniel Smethers, Stewart King he gutted faces of Tring players and management told its own story after a frustrating night at Harefield. They had worked their socks off and totally dominated but only came away with a point after profligacy in front of goal and errors at the other end cost them dearly. Needing 3 points to go top of the Suburban League North they started off at a storming pace and dominated the first half totally. Dan Smethers and Lewis Elliot have been the heartbeat of the team this year and they were as combative as ever in midfield - winning the ball and giving it simple. This allowed others to play and Tring created chance after chance whilst their goal was not under threat. 1 min - Olly Butler goes through one on one but shot saved by legs of keeper. 10 mins - cross falls to Reon Thomas who, off balance, just fails to put ball over the line. 18 mins- Stewart King blazes high and wide from 8 yards 25 mins - Dan Smethers has shot well saved. It was one way traffic and the breakthrough came on 36 mins. And what a goal it was. Dan Steadman started it, surging forward from his own half before feeding to Olly Butler. Olly Butler glided past 2 defenders and fed the ball across goal for Dan Smethers to smash it into the roof of the net. 0-1. Tring continued to dominate but, on 45 minutes, calamity occurred. A cross from right was going nowhere yet custodian Craig Garrett came out and was caught in no mans land and a header looped into the empty net despite George Tomlins efforts on the line. 1-1 Unbelievable. Tring should have been 4 or 5 up. The wind had been taken out of Trings sails and the atmosphere in the dressing room was one of shellshock - with Colin Phillips unable to utter anything much beyond expletives, leaving Chris Juraszek to try and rally the troops. Half Time - Harefield Utd 1 TAFC 1 Tring were less impressive in the second half but still superior. Stewart King was clattered in the box but nothing was going. On 65 mins, a rare break. James Butler (the lesser of the two) lost his man. Cross from the left. 2-1. Amazing. Tring doubled their efforts - unable to comprehend their deficit. Lewis Elliot had a pile driver well saved. George Tomlin had a shot tipped over after a stupendous effort by the keeper. King shot wide. King was pulled down again - Mullet missed the resulting penalty. Parity was restored on 86 mins when King headed home from a Tomlin cross. Tring kept pushing and nearly conceded again at the death with everyone wondering exactly how they had failed to get 3 points. As Sir Alex Ferguson said "Football.... Bloody Hell." Tring are still in with a shout of finishing in the top 2 this season and have done fantastically well to get where they are. They will need to keep up the level of performance but start taking their chances and not give away silly goals at the other end if they want to succeed. It is the scarcity of the goal that makes football the greatest game on earth and makes sports like basketball a mind numbing spectacle. Riveting tactical battles, cat and mouse, with well regimented defences on top. Goals are rare and heroes can be made by scoring one. Everyone remembers Bobby Stokes goal for Southampton against Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup Final and Roger Osborne's solitary effort for Ipswich in 1978. Who can forget Andy Gray's winner for Wolves over the European Champions Nottingham Forest in the League Cup Final of 1980? The only goal of the game - hurtling towards the massed ranks of Wolves fans behind the goal in delight. By contrast, who remembers Michael Jordan's 11th basket against the Boston Celtics in 2001. Absolutely no-one. And most of all - who cares? This Shield game, that Tring needed to win in order to ensure progression at Royston's expense was a riveting battle of wills that would have had the mastermind of catenaccio, Helenio Herrara, purring with delight. Due to unavailability and injury, Tring had to ring the changes again, bringing in Jamie Irons at left back for a debut and Bradley Wilkinson as the lone man up front. Royston were strong but Tring were combative - Smethers and Elliot back to form, Jack Thomson fit and actually running about this week. Chances were at a premium. A Royston forward headed just over but Tring were just about winning the battle and on top. Set pieces and corners were being won. The ball being hurled into the box. Wilkinson was proving a handful and headed wide. Caterer was tenacious and fired wide from the edge of the box. Dan Donald, making his first start for the club, was effective and probing on the right. The defence was holding strong. It was gripping stuff. Half Time - Royston Town 0 TAFC Res 0 Royston jiggled things around at half time and came out looking a bit fresher. They began to gain the uppper hand in the middle but still Tring's defensive shape was good. the game ebbed and flowed but the keepers remained largely untroubled. With the clock ticking, Tring began to push men forward to try and get the win they needed. Smethers was withdrawn and notorous hell raiser James Butler put up front with Wilkinson. Royston didn't know whether to stick or twist. More balls into the box. Thomson propelled a dangerous free kick into the wall. On 90 mins, a cross came over and Wilkinson met it - but the ball drifted wide. The Referees whistle brought an end to the entertainment and a resolute Tring can be pleased with a return to form against dangerous opponents. And the fans went away happy too.
