Jennie Montgomery visits senior GEM girlsby julia smith

GEM students, an organization that guides, encourages and mentors young women, were introduced to Channel 6 evening news co-anchor, Jennie Montgomery on April 10th. Montgomery discussed her career experiences as a co-anchor.

Montgomery gave an overview of her previous career in doing make-overs for a magazine in New York, and doing make-overs for anews's show. Her educational background consists of graduating from Guilford College with a degree in Psychology. Montgomery hasbeen awarded two esteemed Edward R. Murrow Awards for journalism.

Her scariest moment during her career was when, "We had a situation where thousands of people had to be evacuated because ofpotentially deadly gases. We had to get the word out that they had to evacuate. The police officers, emergency crews and managementpeople worked with us so closely. For hours we had a Spanish interpreter on the news desk with us because many of the people involvedwere migrant workers. We needed someone speaking Spanish who could let them know about the urgent situation. We were on the deskfor 12 hours straight. There were no commercials" Montgomery said in reference to the 2005 Graniteville train wreck.

Barbara Walters was Montgomery's biggest influence in going into the journalism career.

"When I was a girl, Barbara Walters was the co-host on the Today Show, and she was so smart and so attractive. Her job seemed soexciting to me. She met everybody, and she interviewed everybody. I thought, 'I want to be Barbara Walters.' So, I was on everynewspaper staff from eighth grade all the way through college" Montgomery said.

Giving advice to the GEM girls, Montgomery feels, "It [your job] has to be a passion. You spend so much time at work, do something youlove" Montgomery said.

The senior GEM girls enjoyed their time with Jennie Montgomery. Each monthly meeting includes a special guest speaker. The GEMgirls were ecstatic that she donated time out of her busy schedule to come talk to them.

Bad weather but good spirits at the 2017 Mastersby griffith james

Despite rough weather in this year's Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, many students from Aiken High School were able totake advantage of the opportunity to work various jobs at the Augusta National's course and to enjoy the sport itself.

This year's tournament was thrilling as on the last days there were several competitors with the same score. Going into the final day, twogolfers, Justin Rose of England and Sergio Garcia of Spain, pulled away to play the final hole, which they tied. Sergio Garcia hit aremarkable birdie in a sudden death round to win the infamous green jacket at the Augusta Nationals.

The Masters Golf Tournament gives college and high school students the opportunity to work jobs around the course in the merchandise, restaurant, transportation departments, and one was able to have the opportunity to caddy as well. Students Eric Wertz, WallaceTownsend, Jalen Dugar, and Talia Gordon were some of the students who benefitted from this tournament to earn spending money byworking in these different departments.

In food service, Eric Wertz was able to have some wonderful new experiences working with people and meeting famous athletes andactresses. His overall experience was "Great and I consider this and excellent experience for anyone. I got to work with some reallywonderful people all within the same age as me" Wertz said. Every day Eric was allowed to have several breaks in his work shift to checkthe scores or go to several gift shops. Jalen Dugar also worked at the Masters. His job at this event was much more difficult though. "Iworked unloading towels and chairs for UPS the first days, but I was moved to a basement area soon after to unbox merchandise." Eventhough his work was very tedious, he enjoyed the experience and finally got to enjoy the event that he had dreamed of attending since hewas young. Wertz and Dugar would recommend this job for anyone who has the motive to spend their entire spring break working ontheir feet, but the pay and experiences are definitely well worth the sacrifice.

Talia Gordon and Wallace Townsend had wonderful times at this years 2017 Masters, as well. Talia Gordon had a once in a lifetimeexperience, but was not working there just for pay. "I went in wanting to work in a new friendly environment and meet new people. I hadthe opportunity to meet people from all states except for nine, and was able to meet several new foreigners, as well", said Gordon. Despitenot having any interest in the sport, she was still able to enjoy a wonderful spring break at the Masters. Wallace Townsend was able toalso work a great position at the Augusta National's Tournament", said Townsend. My grandfather is a member at the course, enabling meto work a job driving professional golfers around the course. In my experience I was able to drive around and engage in conversation withJordan Spieth and Rory McIllroy." Gordon and Townsends' encounters and jobs allowed them to have a delightful time at the Masters.

Students Wallace Townsend, Jalen Dugar, Talia Gordon, and Eric Wertz had many memorable experiences at this years 2017 MastersGolf Tournament due to a job application the school hands out weeks prior to spring break. This is a great opportunity for students toengage themselves in the community, make money, and memories that will last a lifetime. Next year pick up an application in theGuidance Office.

Coming to you live from Germanyby emily mims

In 1987, Aiken High established the German Exchange Program. This program brings a select number of German teenagers to the UnitedStates where they experience what life is like as an American high school student for a full school year. Thirty years later, this traditioncontinues. Lukas Baumgart and Falco Niemeyer arrived in Aiken August 2016 to begin life as Hornets.

Niemeyer comes from Frankfurt, the largest city in the German state of Hesse, and the fifth largest city in Germany with a population ofsix-hundred and fifty thousand. Baumgart comes from Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany, which has a population of one-million, seven-hundred and thirty-nine thousand, one-hundred and seventeen. Being five thousand miles from home for an entire year isnot easy, especially at only sixteen years old. However, the two fearless teenagers have almost completed the challenge of living abroadwith only two months left until they return home.

While the boys are here, they are each staying with a different host. Niemeyer lives with Bob and Priscilla Lugemoore.

"Right now I do get along with my host family, but my previous host family...not really;" Niemeyer said. He explains that the host familychange was one of the most memorable things of his stay in America so far, "Once I switched host families everything got better"Niemeyer said.

Baumgart is staying with Sophomore Brian Marra and his family. Baumgart says that he gets along very well with Brian and his family.Baumgart and the Marras have been to Washington D.C., Edisto, and Charleston.

The two boys have adapted to the Aiken life rather well for being so far from home.

"My favorite part of Aiken is Citizens Park because I can play soccer there" Baumgart said.

Baumgart has played soccer for about seven years in Germany, and is happy when he gets to play soccer with his new American friends. As a member of the varsity soccer team, Baumgart says that getting his head shaved by the other varsity players was one of the mostmemorable events of his trip.

Both boys have taken part in numerous activities, and participate in school sports and clubs such as the Interact club. While Baumgartprefers to play sports and hang out with his friends, Niemeyer is entertained by machines and engages in building things.

When asked what his favorite part of Aiken is, Niemeyer responds with, "Harbor Freight. They have really cheap tools. I love tools. Ireally like metal working and stuff like that" Niemeyer said.

Niemeyer's love for invention is something that he can express while here at The High by being on the Robotics team. He says that beingable to take part in the club has been one of the highlights of his stay.

"Robotics is great. It is something that we are definitely missing in Germany. You have sponsors and stuff for these clubs and that's great. One year of robotics in Germany is ten-thousand dollars. These sponsored, school robotics clubs are just something that is nonexistent inGermany" Niemeyer said.

A school-sponsored robotics team is not the only thing that America has and Germany does not. Both of the Germans agree thatAmerican families have much more control over what their kids do.

Both Niemeyer and Baumgart had to adapt to "Not being as independent. You can't just go to Home Depot by yourself or something. Youcan't just go to any place and do anything. You have to ask your parents to drive you here and there. It's hard to adapt to" Niemeyer said.

The age at which kids are trusted to be on their own in Germany is quite different there than in Aiken, Baumgart explains, "We becameindependent at like twelve. You can just leave the house and text your mom, it's fine." Baumgart said.

The method of transportation is also something that Niemeyer and Baumgart had to adjust to. Aiken is not a very large city, and peopledo not typically walk from place to place like they could in a large city such as Hamburg.

Niemeyer elaborates on this idea, "You only have streets, and that's strange. We have a lot of public transportation that is extremely wellmade. We learn how to use the public transportation in fourth grade. We go to a one day training and we can basically travel everywherewe want to in a special area by ourselves" Niemeyer said.

School is also different in America. Niemeyer says, "We have a weekly schedule in Germany, not a daily schedule. So our schedule islike, one day we have physics, math, and German. And the other day we have English, religion, and philosophy. Also how much time wespend in school during the day changes every week. So one day we have class until one, but the other days we'll have class until four."Niemeyer said.

Their grading system is based more on participation, "it's fifty-fifty for tests and participation" Baumgart said.

Despite the fact that this is not their typical learning environment, the boys have both maintained an A-B average.

On June ninth, Baumgart and Niemeyer will be on their way back to their homes in Germany. As the boys travel back to be with theirfamilies and loved ones, there is one thing that is certain: once a Hornet, always a Hornet.

With the help of the exchange-director and German teacher, Mr. Lader, students from Germany are able to go on a year-long adventure inAmerica. It is up to the Aiken High students and Hornet families to volunteer as host families so that the exchange program can continue. For thirty years, students have been learning new things, meeting new people, and seeing new places by staying with families from AikenHigh. All that is necessary to host a German exchange student is a happy home and positive attitude. Continue the tradition; sign up tohost a German friend today!

To buy or not to buy: music review of ÷ by ed sheeranby emily mims

British singer, musician, and songwriter, Ed Sheeran, released his newest album, ÷, on March 3, 2017. In its first twenty-four hours, thealbum sold over two-hundred thousand copies in the artist's homeland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. With hits like "Shapeof You", "Galway girl", and "Castle on the Hill", Sheeran's singles have been in the "Billboard Top 100" for ten weeks straight since theirrelease in January.

Sheeran's style of music is typically defined as "pop" or "grime", a genre of music that emerged from East London in the early 2000s.The style of grime typically features rapping, and rugged representations of urban life. Sheeran's rapping is often accompanied by hisrhythmic, acoustic guitar-playing. However, like most of his albums, ÷ has a good mix of those classic grime-style raps, heartfelt ballads, and upbeat pop songs.

Here is a brief description and review of the top five songs from the album:

Eraser: This is an example of the "grime" style Sheeran possesses. The song features many original guitar riffs and harmonies. The lyricsare very honest and meaningful, much like Sheeran's other work.

Castle on the Hill: With an upbeat feel, this song showcases Sheeran's singing voice very well. The lyrics of the song are very nostalgic;they tell of his life journeys as a young boy in Halifax, West Yorkshire.

Shape of You: The most popular track on the album is this pop song. It was released as a single on January 6, 2017. This song has hitnumber one on the Billboard Charts in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden, the UnitedKingdom, and the United States.

New Man: The lyrics are very honest in this song. They tell about his ex-girlfriend's "new man". Truthfully, the lyrics are quite funny,Sheeran says that the new man, "rents a house in the 'burb and wears a man bag on his shoulder, but I call it a purse". There is a definitecontrast in feelings from the previous song to this one. The song makes you think of how the human brain works through a break up.

What Do I know?: A cheerful song that is similar to songs from his previous album, ×. The song gives a positive outlook on the world.Sheeran writes,"love can change the world in a moment, but what do I know?", and, "Remember life is more than fitting in yourjeans...spread love and understanding".

Other songs on the album include, "Dive", "Perfect", "Galway Girl", "Happier", "Hearts Don't Break Around Here", "SupermarketFlowers", "Barcelona", "Bibia Be Ye Ye", "Nancy Mulligan", and "Save Myself". The album takes the listener through Sheeran's pastrelationships and life experiences in a very graceful way. The composition of the music is simple, like most of Sheeran's music. In a lot ofpopular music today, the composition is complex and has several different rhythms layered over each other. It is Sheeran's simplicity thatmakes his musical style stand out from the crowd.

Overall, I would recommend this album to anyone who likes pop music. The album flows very well through truthful raps, sincere lovestories, great acoustic guitar riffs, and personal tales of his days as a teen.

Anne Lindell overcomes adversity with positivityby julia smith

Born in Russia, junior Anne Lindell was adopted from her homeland by Shelly Lindell when she was three-and-a-half years old.

In her retelling of her challenges in Russia, at birth Lindell remembers that, "my tongue was tied to the bottom of my mouth. I had eyeand tongue surgery. I wore an eye-patch over my eye. I also have brain damage."

Lindell is diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy is the disorder of movement, muscle tone or posture. It is caused by damage tothe developing brain, most often before birth. Signs and symptoms include impaired movement related with abnormal reflexes, floppinessor rigidity of the limbs and trunk, abnormal posture, involuntary movements, unsteady walking, or some combination of these. Those whohave cerebral palsy may have difficulties swallowing and they commonly have eye muscle imbalance, where the eyes do not focus on thesame object.

The effect on functional abilities varies greatly for those who are diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Some of those affected can walk andsome cannot. Others show normal to near-normal intellectual capacity, but some have intellectual disabilities.

Throughout all the obstacles Lindell has to overcome each day, she still chooses to live her life to her upmost ability. While living the'Hornet life', she takes employment math, english, and job skills training. During fourth and fifth period, she helps clean the cafeteria, andin sixth period she takes Early Childhood with Ms. Harmon.

"I am involved in the rec crew with special needs children" Lindell said.

Anne Lindell enjoys her time at Aiken High. The best moments include her group of friends who help her. However, she and her friendsdo not appreciate the bullying they receive.

"I knew there was going to be a lot of bullying and cussing. I knew it was going to be a big school" Lindell said when asked about whatshe expected when entering Aiken High.

Anne Lindell is planning to graduate in 2018. She wants to go to Aiken Technical College for two years to learn how to be a day-careteacher.
