Some of the items on the OSNM board list are to be able to increase the education for all Nutrition Mangers across Ontario for Members and non-Members. We will also meet with the Retirement Division ORCA Ontario Retirement Communities Association to assist them as regulations become more evident in the retirement sector. Over the past year, in 2017, the board was able to acquire the services with the help of CSNM a marketing company called Enterprise. They have done research and leg work in getting us meetings with the Ministry of Health and providing assistance with applying for grants within Ontario to assist with further educating managers and front line staff. We have all heard about the IDDSI coming on board in Ontario and across the country. With this being in the forefront for the next 2 years, we want to be able to provide opportunities of education to all Nutrition Managers to reduce the risk to the clients we serve. As a board we have also been looking at the aspect of having a dual membership with CSNM. This would mean all Nutri- tion Managers across Canada would pay one fee and have membership in both the National division and Provincial chapter. This would give Ontario a better voice, one voice for all. OSNM currently has 458 members as it is voluntary to be part of the provincial chapter. However if we were to have dual membership we would have more than 2000 voices in Ontario. A team of 2000 can get more accomplished than a team of 458. So I’m asking that until we can accom- plish the dual membership with CSNM, I would like to encourage you all to find even one non-OSNM member and recruit them to join the provincial chapter in 2018. All they have to do is click on the little box when renewing their member- ship in 2018 or even better ask them to go to our newly revamped OSNM web site at www.osnm.org and join today. This would double our voice in Ontario to become a larger team of Nutrition Managers across Ontario. Giving better opportunities for education and networking together. In closing, I will say a huge THANK YOU for all you do as a Nutrition Man- gers in serving the clients you do and making a difference in their lives. A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT by Judy Kirby, NM

Hello one and all. First off I would like to thank you all for being a part of OSNM.

As 2017 ends and 2018 begins, we start a fresh a new year and a new season. As president of OSNM, I plan to start a new year and have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning.

Some of the items on the OSNM board list are to be able to increase the education for all Nutrition Mangers across Ontario for Members and non-Members. Next on the list, is to connect with the Ministry of Long Term Care (MOH) about the regulations in Ontario and have them better understand the needs of the man-agers in Long Term Care across Ontario. Some of the issues facing managers are the Food Service Worker hours as well as the manager and supervisor hours. We hope to guide educational outcomes of the Food Service Workers and best practices.

We have all

heard about the IDDSI coming on board in Ontario and across the country. With this being in the forefront for the next 2 years, we want to be able to provide opportunities of education to all Nutrition Managers to reduce the risk to the clients we serve.

As a board we have also been looking at the aspect of having a dual membership with CSNM. This would mean all Nutri-tion Managers across Canada would pay one fee and have membership in both the National division and Provincial chapter. This would give Ontario a better voice, one voice for all. OSNM currently has 458 members as it is voluntary to be part of the provincial chapter. However if we were to have dual membership we would have more than 2000 voices in Ontario. A team of 2000 can get more accomplished than a team of 458.

So I’m asking that until we can accom-plish the dual membership with CSNM, I would like to encourage you all to find even one non-OSNM member and recruit them to join the provincial chapter in 2018. All they have to do is click on the little box when renewing their member-ship in 2018 or even better ask them to go to our newly revamped OSNM web site at www.osnm.org and join today. This would double our voice in Ontario to become a larger team of Nutrition Managers across Ontario. Giving better opportunities for education and networking together.

In closing, I will say a huge THANK YOU for all you do as a Nutrition Man-gers in serving the clients you do and making a difference in their lives.

By Erica Beehler

From a young age, nutrition has always played a strong role in my life. I have always been curious about the human body, and my mother believed in Hippocrates’

teachings of “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food;” instilling wholesome food choices within our family household. When I was a teenager and began to experiment with eating processed foods when not under the watchful eye of her, I experienced first-hand the detrimental effects that junk food had to my body. It took a few years to change my habits back to those of what I’d originally been accustomed to as a child, but it was clear to see that preventative medicine can cure what ails you, and that you truly are what you eat. Eager to share my knowledge with others, and quench my yearning of helping those in need, I decided to pursue a career in dietet-ics. After learning of Canada’s regulations on nutritionists, I discovered that a position as a Nutrition Manager would be a viable career choice for myself.

After weeks of constant research, I found a program at Fan-shawe College offering an articulation agreement with Univer-sity of Western Ontario and Brescia University College where-in I could graduate with a certificate as a Skilled Culinary Chef, a certificate in Food & Nutrition Management, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics. Having this triple threat of certificates and degrees will allow me to pursue my ideal career of a dietitian working in my own private health care centre and also teaching yoga to help promote a well-rounded healthy lifestyle for my clients.

I found the Ontario Society of Nutrition Management in the summer of 2016 when I was trying to find ways to promote my online presence as a credible nutritionist. I chose to purchase a student membership once I was accepted into my college’s nutrition program, with the hopes of staying current with pressing nutritional issues in Canada, and networking with other professionals to help me build my career. Additionally, with my student membership I feel more professional than my classmates who have opted not to enroll in the OSNM student membership program.

As a dietary aide in both long term care and in retirement living, I work closely alongside my nutrition manager men-

tors and have also began my training as a cook. As a result of my experience thus far, have been able to witness first hand everything that goes into managing the nutritional needs of our residents. In addition, I am also on the nutrition counsel for my home, so I am able to give my input on any menu changes I see fit, or if special dietary requirements need to be met in order to cater to specific residents. Previously, I have worked as a nutritionist at a fitness & health club, where I monitored member’s eating habits and made suggestions on how they could make healthier food choices in order to help them lose weight. Along with paid experience, I also manage a blog and several social media platforms where I share my knowledge, wholesome recipes, and suggestions on how to live a healthier lifestyle. Prior to pursuing a career in nutrition management, I used to work in an office managing 20 employees; organiz-ing case files, demonstrating the ability to prioritize tasks, and addressing customer’s needs. Where applicable, I always find a way to share my growing nutritional knowledge with those who require assistance, making it clear to everyone how pas-sionate I am about healthy eating habits, and that a career in Nutrition Management is the best choice for me.

CSNM continues to review its “National Structure/Current (2017-2019) Strategic Plan”. All provincial chapter presidents, president elects and the provincial

representatives were invited to attend the first summit meet-ing before the CSNM national conference on June 14, 2017 in Ottawa. During the time we also had a successful CSNM 2017 Conference from June 14th to 16th, 2017, AGM and full celebrations of Canada’s 150th birthday.

The main focus of the first Summit meeting on June 14, 2017 was to brainstorm ideas on “one voice” for all members which OSNM, along with Provinces across Canada got to participate. We had another successful follow up meeting on the outcomes from the Summit on September 26, 2017. A working task force has been formed which will be reporting to the CSNM board and Summit meeting members on the progress of the established priorities. The CSNM board is going to meet in Kelowna on November 3-5, 2017 to further review “Strategic Plan 2017 to 2019”, “National Structure” and “Summit next steps”.

OSNM had a successful 2017 Conference “SMORE to Learn” and AGM on September 27-29, 2017 at the Notta-wasaga Inn in Alliston, Ontario. Paulette Byrnes-Carrier and Judy Kirby, 2017 conference chairs, did a great job providing networking and education opportunities for members.

The fall annual OSNM conference and AGM was held at the Nottawasaga Inn in Alliston. The theme was to “Come Learn S’More”. On

September 28th and 29th, a bunch of us foodies got together to invest in our future as Nutrition Manag-ers. We started the conference with Jayne Harvey, a dynamic motivational speaker, with her take on how to deal with change in our day-to-day work and home lives. Then, Bob Molson, a Registered Dietitian, spoke on Dementia and dining. Chef Daryl Neamtu, Red Seal Chef from DN Hospitality, presented about cooking in LTC and retirement. Barb Collins, Registered Dietitian from Seasons Care, spoke on diet liberalization. The second day, Peter Rick, Registered Dietitian, informed us about IDDSI the new international dysphasia initiative. We ended the conference with learning about busi-

ness etiquette with Toni Veiledal. Not only did we learn, we had some fun too! On

Thursday between speakers, we visited 24 vendors from products to services to food…lots of food! We started the evening with a great BBQ of chicken and ribs, baked potatoes, and salads. Then off to the campfire, where we were entertained by Brant Matthews “The Fire Guy” and then, sang the night away. We topped off the night in the hospitality suit with Marg Mitchell from Sunrise Juices as our sponsor and host. Pictures will be posted soon on the website for you to see. Thanks again for all the vendors who came out, and to all our Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors. And thank you to everyone for making this a fall conference we will never forget! See you all next year!

HEALTHCARE COMMITTEE REPORT

During this past year the Healthcare Committee began meeting in November 2016 with a planning meeting.

Goals and Priorities for the year included:• Creating a working Healthcare Committee• Increasing awareness among Nutrition and Food Service

Managers of the role that OSNM plays related to advocacy within the healthcare sector.

• Liaison with and presentations to governing bodies including OLTCA (Ontario Long Term Care Association); OANHSS (Ontario Association of Non-profit Home and Services for Seniors); ORCA (Ontario Retirement Community Association); MOHLTC and the Dietitians of Canada.

• Partnering with other organizations/associations regarding joint education events and common concerns.

• Contact and liaison with industry partners relating to compliance with the learning objectives and outcomes for the Food Service Worker Training Program.

• Implementation of IDDSI standards in healthcare.

During the year the committee:• Developed a survey to determine what OSNM member-

ship believes are the issues and priorities to be addressed for Nutrition Managers. The survey was circulated to the

membership on April 7th, 2017 with the headline “Your voice to the Ministry of Health.”

• Attended the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) Nutri-tion and Food Services Conference in Toronto; the Ontario Home Economists Association of Ontario (OHEA) confer-ence in Guelph – where we had an exhibitor table.

• Several OSNM members attended the “Together We Care” conference of OLTCA/ORCA in Toronto.

• Preliminary contact was made with the Gerontology Network, Dietitians of Canada relating to compliance and upgrades regarding the learning objectives and outcomes for the Food Service Worker Training Program.

Planning for the upcoming year is underway and will be guided by the concerns and issues raised by those who completed the survey.

We will continue to work towards increasing our presence and awareness of the Ontario Society of Nutrition Manage-ment with governing bodies and professional organizations.

We will continue to focus on compliance with the learning objectives and outcomes for the Food Service Worker program and on the implementation of International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) standards in healthcare.

Our goals for this upcoming year are to continue to grow with technology. We plan to start an Insta-gram page and utilize our other social media pages to their fullest potential. We also have some new article focuses for the Trillium.

We would like to highlight great Nutrition Man-agers and focus on all the different roles you can be in with our profession. If you know a great Nutri-tion Manager, submit a write-up about why they are so great to [email protected].

To encourage and boost article submissions there will be a competition for best article submission – details to come soon!

It’s been my pleasure to continue to be your Public Relations Representative and hope you like my weekly posts coming to a computer near you!

Heather Nichols NMPublic Relations/Communications Chair

OSNM membership has been increasing slowly but steadily! In January 2015 we had declined to 380 members, but today we are 474 members

strong! Although this is an admirable increase, a member at the OSNM Conference in Alliston reminded me that back in “Denise Winger days” OSNM members num-bered over 800. I am grateful that this member chose to rejoin OSNM at the Conference after letting her membership lapse for many years. When I asked why the change in heart she explained how beneficial she found the Conference – not just the learning opportu-nities but the NETWORKING!!! Wow! The importance of networking cannot be of more significance to us as Nutrition Managers, especially in today’s ever-chang-ing fast-paced work environments. No matter in what sector a Nutrition Manager is employed, our job descriptions and responsibilities have become more

complex. Often we work “alone” or in environments where we aren’t exposed to “outside” opinions or new technologies or “tried and true” processes. Networking at OSNM events allows us to share what works, what doesn’t, and what might. We can share best practices, brainstorm and vent! The power of networking – a tremendous benefit of being an OSNM member.I encourage each and every one of you to recruit at least two colleagues to join or renew their OSNM membership. Not only is there strength in numbers (when lobbying the Government), but there is strength in membership support and sharing of knowledge and trials and tribulations! Networking is priceless! Let’s bring “Denise Winger days” back! Let’s make OSNM 800-plus strong!
