From your BTW Headquarters

The Front Cover: A ride through Yosemite National park during the California State Trike-In at Madera. This is one ride everyone should have on their bucket list.

NOTICE: The Financial Statement for 2017 is completed and posted to the Web Site

Hi Folks, I would like to take a monent to reach out to a very special guy in our As-sociation, one who has stuck with his thank-less job as a Regional Director & an Assis-tant Exec. Director through all the original turmoil and the bumps along the road right up until now. That guy is crutchety old Jim Lee who is now contending with cancer and having to go through chemo and God knows what else that, that causes. I would like to wish my friend a speedy, full recovery and thank him for all his support and regular phone calls just to help me keep my sanity. (Thanks Jim)OK I complained about not getting many photos last issue and I guess you heard me. So now I have to apologize to some who may not get their photos in this issue. I assure you they will get in the next issue as we just ran out of room this time. Please remember that without new members BTW will fade, so when you go for that ride, stop and introduce yourself to any new trikers you run into and invite them to ride with you. We all win when we can call on other mem-ber to ride with and so will they. I am seeing

new members joining us, but are not hearing from existing Chapters about their rides and this negates one of the main benefits of being a member of BTW, so lets all do our part to keep BTW the great Family it is.By the way does anyone know when the next election is for my replacement, as I think I want to get in the running for the next presi-dent of the USA, along with everybody else. Hope to see you at one of the next events.Ride safe and enjoy Triking.

FROM THE MEMBERS

Sioux Land Trikers is a Northwest Iowa Chapter of the Brothers of the Third Wheel. These two pictures are of the representatives from Partners For Patriots, an organization that acquires, and trains service dogs for specific needs of veterans. They do this only by dona-tions and never charge the veterans for anything. The dogs, training of the dogs and the vet-erans, is totally free to each veteran. Each year, we, as a chapter, choose a charity to donate $500 to and for the last two years, we have chosen Partners For Patriots, as it merits our full scope of appreciation towards our veans. As a chapter of BTW, we strive to get the word out about BTW, and this is one way we accomplish that endeavor. Throughout the year, we ride at least once per week if not more, and are always in the public eye, spreading the word. We also have monthly meetings, all year long, as this one was, on or about the second day of the month. Being free on three, has far more benefits than just riding! From our chapter to all of yours, be safe and enjoy the ride! Fred Reese, Chapter Director, Sioux Land Trikers

Sioux Land Trikers’ treasurer, Erma TeGrotenhuis, presenting the check to Gerry and Lisa, with a Part-ner in training, Ike. These dogs begin training as small puppies and require about a year of training before being delivered to the chosen veteran. It is truly a fantastic organization.

Sioux Land Trikers member, Loren Kuester, notifying Gerry and Lisa that another organiza-tion, that he is a member of, also has chosen to partner up with Partners For Patriots in a char-ity golf tournament in August. They, of course, were pleased with that news as well.

Hi All, Riding season is finally here in the Midwest, if the rain would stop. There has been a lot going on at the Lee household. We thought my wife Kathleen had lung cancer but it turned out to be scar tissue, thank God. That was the good news. Then it was my turn. I ended up with cancer on the back of my tongue and tonsils. It’s stage one and in a small area so they say there is a ninety percent chance for a full recovery. By the time you read this I will be well into chemo and radiation. I guess that is the good news, too. The bad news is my riding season is done for this year, maybe I can get some of the trike projects done finally. I know I have been neglecting my duties as Illinois State Direc-tor and for that I apologize but I am asking for anyone interested to please step up and take the position. It’s not hard. I have babbled here long enough, and my typing finger is getting sore (lol). Hug your loved ones and let them know how you feel about them, you may not get another chance. Peace and Love Jim Lee Region 4 Director

FROM THE MEMBERS Continued:

SiouxLand Trikers (northwest Iowa) This was the scene of our June 2nd meeting, in Pierson, Iowa. Each month, we have our meetings in a different place and they include a nice ride when the weather permits. This particular meeting was a potluck dinner and BBQ, hosted by our assistant director, Keith Swanson, at his home. This was not only

our first meeting/ride for the year, due to weather, but also had our newest member and her maiden voyage driving a trike for the first time in her life! She did great and I think we have her hooked now! As always, we are actively recruiting for the BTW and trying to share with the world, the experience of free on three! Normally, we would have had several rides in by this time of the year, but, here in Iowa, the weather has not been good to us this year. With very cold temps and excessive rains and storms, we're about waterlogged and really need some drying time. We also realize that downstream, they are having it much worse than we have had it. Our thoughts and prayers are with those folks down south and hope for better days for everyone. As most of you are aware, this is the season that the "Trike Ins" begin. Please try to make it to one or more of these events as they've all worked very hard to put these on for your benefits. Our chapter, the SiouxLand Trikers (SLT), will be leaving on our annual weeklong trip, on Monday morning, the 10th, and returning on Saturday night, the 15th. We try to plan to go to a different place each year, and have truly enjoyed the past few years doing this. This year we head for Prairie Du Chien, WS. Every year, we meet a lot of folks who would love to buy and ride a trike. I'm sure that some of them have done just that. It's just one way to introduce triking to our neighbors. We members of SLT, wish all of our brothers and sisters a safe and happy journey during this riding season! Fred Reese, Director, SiouxLand Trikers (northwest Iowa)

Howdy from Southern Arizona Smokin' Eagles! Well, Summer seems to be here pretty much in FULL BLAST. Our chapter has been busy with yard sales at the Mescal Bar and Grill and also at Rick Hackney"s (Jredia) house. Tracy and I had planned to make it to Seligman this year, but last minute things changed that for us We are currently trying to decide on a band for Turkey Fest, there are 3 in the running , and they are all highly endorsed by the Double Adobe Campground. Should be a good time by either one. A few of us took a ride to Tombstone for Wy-

att Earp Days. What a great ride that was and Rudy even got a picture with the dance hall girls and some pretty wild looking locals. We're also gearing up for the 4th of July Parade which is coming up here real soon. We hope that everyone can make it to this years’ Turkey Fest, which looks to be a great time. Hope every-one has a safe and fun summer! See ya in the fall hopefully. Eric and the Southern AZ Smokin' Eagles

MEMBERS SUPPORT

Brothers of the Third Wheel would like to thank members in Nevada for thierdonation from the Nevada State Trike-In. These donations help BTW defray the continuous increases in operating costs and help to avoid having to increase the membership dues.Remember we are a non profit so this is a true donation. If all Chapters and States would join in on this very generous theme of donating a small amount of the proceeds from their event, BTW could continue to maintain the current membership rates as we have done for the past 3 years. Thanks again to all those who have supported our Association.

53

ITEMS OF INTERESTIn an effort to better represent the members of our Association, the Board has made the following changes to the Regions and the Regional Directors who represent them.

TIPS ON PHOTOS FOR THE MAGAZINE

IF YOU TAKE PHOTOS WITH YOUR PHONE AND IT IS SET AT 72 PIXELS IT IS THE LOWEST QUALITY OF PICTURE THAT THE PHONE PRODUCES. MOST PHONES CAN BE SET TO A GREATER PIXEL OUTPUT.EACH PHONE SETTING IS DIFFERENT, HOWEVER YOUR SERVICE PROVIDER CAN HELP WITH HOW THAT IS DONE. A SETTING OF 150 PIXELS IS GOOD AND 200 PIXELS WILL GIVE YOU A BEAUTIFUL PHOTO, THAT WILL NOT BE GRAINY AND THE COLORS WILL BE TRUE AND SHARP. PHOTOS THAT WE RECEIVE AT HQ IN 72 PIXELS ARE RUN THROUGH A PROGRAM TO CLEAN THEM UP BUT NOT MUCH HAPPENS AS THE BASE IS SO LOW THAT THE PROGRAM CAN ONLY LIGHTEN OR DARKEN THEM. THIS IS JUST A TIP SO WE CAN POST BETTER PICTURES IN THE MAGAZINE TO MAKE YOUR TRIKE LOOK ITS BEST AND OF COURSE YOU AS WELL. HOWEVER IN MY CASE IT WOULD TAKE MORE THAN MORE PIXELSTO MAKE ME LOOK GOOD ICEMAN

In Memory of Trikers LostMike Bush passed away at home on May 4, 2019. He was one of our honored Veterans having retired from the US Army after 23 years of service. Mike was known for his involvement in his church and the homeless outreach. He loved spending time with his family of trikers. Mike is survived by his loving wife Donna, 5 children and 5 grandchildren. He is so missed by his Coastal Cruisers family! Rest in Peace Mike. You are loved

Jayne Bingham, passed away Feb, 2019. Life can be so cruel at times. You were taken too soon. You always had a kind word to say about everyone. You will be missed beyond words. RIP Jayne, until we meet again xxx Steve Chant

A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE

Boomer bikers are turning to three-wheelersto keep up life in the fast lane

Excerpts from The Canadian PressJan.2019

Dan, a firefighter “The next thing you know he’s buying a Can-Am Spyder,” recalled Pam, 64. “Boys and their toys.” “So I put on my snowmo-bile helmet and popped on behind him and went for a little ride,” Pam said, her risk aversion honed by decades in personal insurance. “I was hooked.” The roadster has rerouted their retirement. Pam and Dan have put more than 250,000 kilometres on seven Spyders over the past decade. They’ve trekked to trike rallies in Missouri, Ten-nessee and North Carolina. “I wouldn’t say it’s a hobby; it’s more of a lifestyle,” said Pam, who moderates the Ontario Spyder Ryders Facebook page, which counts more than 770 members. “It gives you a sense of freedom that you don’t have in a car.”The number of three-wheeled vehicles registered in Quebec rose 60 per cent to 15,147 between 2014 and 2017, according to the Transport Ministry. Motorcycles grew 17 per cent to 185,416 in the same period. The rest of the country has been slower to adopt, but producers have their eyes on sunnier climes than Canada. Companies like BRP, Harley-Davidson Inc., Quebec-based Campagna Motors and Minnesota’s Polaris Industries are looking to expand in the U.S. as well as Australia, Japan and Europe. BRP chief execu-tive Jose Boisjoli hopes to triple global sales of three-wheelers over five years to more than$1 billion — or nearly one-quarter of total company revenues in 2017 “Most motorcyclists wave to each other,” he said. “I’ve noticed with Can-Ams, that doesn’t really happen. It’s not that they don’t wave, but they don’t get a wave back.“’As a real man, you ride two wheels, you don’t ride three.’ I think those stigmas are dropping today, I really do, because the technology is so fun to play with,” he said.

BTW BOD Elections BTW is split into 10 Regions; 9 of these regions are in the USA and Canada and the final one covers all areas outside of the USA & Canada. Each Region has a Regional Director. The Regional Directors serve as the Board of Directors. The Board makes decisions regarding the running of BTW, with each Regional Director being elected for a three-year term by the Directors in their Regions. If your Regional Director is not participating in the Board Meetings or being in touch with the Directors in their region, it is up to the membership to request them to step down. The Regions are set out on the Contact page on the forum and in every Triker. For more info, contact Headquarters.

If it is your Region’s turn to vote for your Director, have your Chapter or State Director contact HQ and get the documentation for the election.

The nomination period for these posts ends May 1st, and any names submitted will be added to the list of nominees for the regions, if no names are submitted for the position, the previous representatives will remain in their post for the next three years. As you will see we have REGIONS still needing a Director, so if you are a fully paid up member in Region 6, 7or 8 and would like to step up and represent the members in your area, please get in touch with HQ and discuss the post and the possibility of you taking this on.
