said. Beat the Clock has placed second in the last two editions

of the gr.1 Queen’s silver Jubilee Cup (1400m) – behind Beauty generation – and that assignment is an option once again.

“it’s the next race on the programme that’s suitable for him,” size said. “he’s raced in the last two editions of it so we’ll see how he is at home; he’s getting older and whether he can tolerate another race that quickly i’m not sure but he’ll let us know.”

chance from there, just ride for luck and the split came at the right time. once again he proved that he’s probably the best sprinter in hong kong.”

Beat the Clock cruised into the slipstream of the pace-setting thanks Forever with 300m to race, and when stablemate Full of Beauty (darci Brahma) rolled out a fraction, Moreira gave the winner his cue to accelerate between the pair.

the six-year-old wound up and hit the lead approaching the final 100m and held the battling thanks Forever by a head with another size-trained galloper hot king Prawn (denman) third. the winning time was 1m 08.57s after Beat the Clock sprinted the final 400m in 21.91s.

“he seems to overcome the circumstances of a race, whatever they may be, to win. that’s something you can’t deal with, he just does it himself,” size said of last month’s g1 longines hong kong sprint (1200m) hero.

“he gives you a very nervous time and a very nervous feel

but it’s one of relief when they deliver. that’s a high-rating win, his last win, so to repeat that is very difficult but that just means he’s got more there. he’s a worthy winner of four group 1s and he deserves it.”

Moreira also stressed his belief that Beat the Clock has more in the tank.

“When he gets in front it looks like he’s just going to run away but he just doesn’t want to put his neck in front, he just stays there. i can feel there is more in there but he’s just not giving – i don’t mind because as long as he crosses the line first i’m happy!” hong kong’s three-time champion jockey

the te akau blueprint is based on buying quality yearlings, that are then syndicated amongst a loyal existing client base and a growing band of new customers, who can win in the lucrative age-group events before going on to bigger and better things as older horses.

ellis can point to avantage as a prime example of that philosophy.

“sale time is a vitally important time of the year for us because if we buy the wrong type of horses it won’t matter how good a trainer we have, they won’t win races,” ellis said.

“We spend a lot of time concentrating on getting the right horses and avantage is a classic

example of that.“she is a horse that can race as a

two-year-old, go to australia and win group races as a three-year-old, come back even better as a four-year-old and she will have her best season as a five-year-old.”

a $210,000 purchase from the oaks stud draft at the 2017 Premier session at karaka, avantage won both the $1 million karaka Million 2Yo (1200m) and gr.1 Manawatu sires’ Produce stakes (1400m) at two, won the gr.3 Birthday Card stakes (1200m) at Rosehill at three and has now taken out her second group one with victory in the JR & n Berkett telegraph (1200m) at trentham

With the 2020 edition of new Zealand Bloodstock’s national Yearling sale series

set to kick off in a week’s time, the wins of class mare Avantage (Fastnet Rock) and promising filly Festivity (i am invincible) at trentham on saturday put a smile a mile wide on the face of te akau Racing boss, david ellis.

the leading buyer of yearlings at the sale for well over a decade, ellis knows his reputation and the success of the te akau brand requires racetrack achievement and winning races at this time of the year, when the industry’s premier shop window is about to open for business, has a value that money can’t buy. as always ellis is looking forward to this year’s yearling sale where he believes the mixture of established stallions and first season newcomers has given the catalogue plenty of depth and opportunities for buyers across all categories.

“i will be at karaka from tuesday and will be looking at horses every day until the sale starts on sunday (January 26),” he said.

“We started looking back in november and what i have seen so far is very impressive.

“i think the mild winter we have had has really boosted the yearlings as i have seen so many that are well grown, correct and very athletic.

“this year’s catalogue has a great mix with some of our proven stallions but i’ve also seen individuals by the first season sires like Vadamos, turn

Me loose and tivaci, to just name a few, that i really like so there will be something on offer for everyone.

“this is the most exciting time of the year for me and i can’t wait for the sale to start.”

te akau Racing has flexed its muscle in recent times, with trainer Jamie Richards well-clear in the current season new Zealand trainers’ premiership, with four group ones in new Zealand and one in australia to his name already this season.

Meanwhile, the operation’s singapore-based trainer Mark Walker has dashed to an early lead in the singapore trainers’ premiership, fresh from winning his third title in the territory in 2019, to add to his five earlier trainers’ premierships in new Zealand.

on the weekend as a four-year-old mare.

“Melody Belle and Probabeel are other great examples for us in recent years,” ellis said.

“it is all very well buying these horses but we have got to see them perform for their owners as unless they are performing, they are not going to reinvest with us.”

ellis was also delighted by the win of Festivity who was purchased as a member of a special fillies syndicate back in 2018 that is flying through the deeds of the i am invincible three-year-old and fellow syndicate member exaltation.

a $410,000 purchase at the 2018 karaka Book 1 sale, from the draft of Windsor Park stud, she is owned by the te akau 2018 Fabulous Fillies Breeding syndicate

“i bought three fillies for the syndicate and unfortunately we lost a savabeel filly with a beautiful pedigree, so that’s left us two lovely fillies and between them they’ve had three starts for three wins,” ellis said.

“exaltation is a half-sister to our horse of the Year Melody Belle, who has won a further nine group one races since we bought these fillies, so her value has skyrocketed and Festivity, too, is now a very valuable filly.”

“it’s a big relief, a big thrill and very encouraging for us.”

the proud hogan legacy joins forces with the influence of new owners Brendan and Jo lindsay to create a quality Cambridge stud draft for the 2020 new Zealand

Bloodstock national Yearling sale.Cambridge stud was lifted to world renown by sir Patrick

and lady Justine hogan, breeding more than 40 group one winners and claiming the title of leading vendor at new Zealand’s national yearling sale for 31 consecutive years.

the iconic property was bought by the lindsays in late 2017, and they took ownership in april of the following year.

“the yearlings in this draft are the result of last matings

arranged by the hogans with their Cambridge stud mares, while there’s also a strong representation of Brendan and Jo lindsay’s mares with a sprinkling of australian stallions they selected,” Cambridge stud’s chief executive henry Plumptre said.

“We’re hoping the draft will be well received. We’ve had good attendance and feedback for our parades.”

it could be a big week for the lindsays, whose star filly Probabeel (nZ) (savabeel) is the $1.60 favourite for the karaka Million 3Yo Classic (1600m) at ellerslie on the eve of the sale.

she is shooting for a slice of history as the first karaka Million 2Yo (1200m) winner to return the following year to win the 3Yo Classic.

the lindsays also have not an option (not a single doubt) ($3.80) and taroni (nZ) (showcasing) ($12) prominent in the taB’s fixed-odds market in their quest for back-to-back wins in the karaka Million 2Yo.

Big results on the racetrack and in the sale ring would be a welcome change of fortune for everyone involved with Cambridge stud after a horror start to the season.

“We’ve had a pretty devastating six months, losing three stallions (Roaring lion, Burgundy and tavistock),” Plumptre said. “We’ll be offering 25 yearlings by tavistock at karaka as a key feature of our draft.

“tavistock was in a bit of a quiet patch at the time we lost him, but he’s got some good-numbered crops coming through. Buyers kept the faith in him at karaka last year, they bought good numbers of yearlings who are two-year-olds now.

“We’re racing a good half a dozen tavistocks ourselves, including a lovely filly out of Full of spirit that we bought at the Ready to Run sale in november.

“tavistock is going to be a very big loss for us, but we’re looking forward to selling some lovely yearlings by him at karaka.

“the best colt is probably lot 417, the half-brother to Bavella. he’s a really nice horse with scope and length.

“another one out of the mare is the two-year-old Vernazza, who won very well at ellerslie last weekend. We think she’s possibly our best domestic two-year-old filly this year. lance (noble) has a lovely little filly (taroni) in the karaka Million, but we think Vernazza has the size and scope to grow into an extremely nice three-year-old. so the dam Zonza, who was a stakes winner herself, could be a bit special.

“in terms of the tavistock fillies, there’s lot 31 – she’s out of kilfenora, who is by Zabeel out of l’Quiz, making her a sister to Champagne and st Reims. this filly is a quality, elegant yearling with a lovely attitude and good temperament. i’d be surprised if she couldn’t run.”

Meanwhile, the hogan influence is strong in a couple of other notable members of the 2020 draft.

“lot 13 is by snitzel out of katie lee. she was a great mare for sir Patrick, and this was one of his key matings from that season. the colt isn’t overly big, but he’s strong and walks well.

“katie lee may have been a little disappointing as a broodmare, but there’s an iffraaj two-year-old this season with team Rogerson (Brazier) who is held in very high regard.

“We also have a nice exceed and excel colt (lot 368) who was bred by sir Patrick. he’s a sharp, well-built, well-developed type. i was involved with a lot of exceed and excel racehorses when i was at godolphin, and he’s very much in their mould.”

Plumptre pointed to progeny of tarzino, savabeel and lonhro as his other favourite yearlings in the 2020 draft.

“We have a couple of nice yearlings by tavistock’s son tarzino, and they look very much like tavistock – good length and scope,” he said.

“We have a stunning savabeel filly out of silk Pins (lot 283) for Max Whitby, who i’d expect to go very well. i also really like our lonhro filly (lot 447). lonhro was always one of my absolute favourites when i was at godolphin. he’s been a phenomenal stallion.”

all in all, Plumptre is hoping for a strong Cambridge performance as part of a highly successful karaka sale.

“i’ve been asked to predict how the karaka sale will go, and my reply was that i don’t make predictions,” he said.

“i think that any expectation that we’ll just continue off what happened in the Magic Millions sale would be wrong. We’re not offering the same product, and it’s not the same market. We’re selling different types of horses who’ll run over different distances.

“But hopefully we can entice a good number of australian buyers over – they are our major market. new Zealand Bloodstock has given good reports about bookings and things like that.

“our horses had a good spring, with a number of group one horses (including kolding, Melody Belle, te akau shark and Miami Bound), which may well help.

“one thing that we can rely on is that our yearlings have been raised on the very-best quality grass, which unfortunately hasn’t been the case in australia.”

Enzo’s Lad (inner) and eventual winner Avantage battle out the finish of the Gr.1 JR & N Berkett Telegraph (1200m) at Trentham (Race Images – Peter Rubery)

trainer Michael Pitman was bursting with pride after his class sprinter Enzo’s Lad (testa Rossa) went within a short neck of tearing off his third consecutive victory in

the time-honoured gr.1 JR & n Berkett telegraph (1200m) at trentham on saturday.

Bidding to become just the third horse to achieve the feat in the 121-year history of the race and the first since Blue Blood in 1975-77, enzo’s lad had to bow to Matamata mare avantage (Fastnet Rock) who triumphed after the pair waged war over the final 300m of the race.

Pitman was left rueing a crucial check enzo’s lad suffered

during the mid-stages that changed the complexion of the race from there on.

“he went super didn’t he, just everything we could have asked for,” Pitman said.

“he didn’t get any favours during the race and when he got shunted out five-wide after 600m it probably cost him the win.

“take nothing away from the mare as she is class and deserved the victory but Michael (Mcnab) had to take him forward when he copped that bump and ended up in front

much earlier than we had anticipated.“he was a sitting duck then but he fought right to the line

and there wasn’t much in it at the finish.”enzo’s lad and stablemate sensei (dream ahead), who

finished well back after getting too far off the lead in the early stages, will now travel home to Riccarton with Pitman in two minds as to where to go next with enzo’s lad who is at the top of the handicap through his form over the past two seasons.

“We have been considering taking him to te Rapa for the BCd sprint (gr.1, 1400m) next month but i’m just not that sure at this stage as the field might come up a bit too tough,” he said.

“there is the lightning (listed, 1200m) back at trentham on oaks day in March which we will look at or there is also a nice race for him at dunedin next month so we do have some options.”

While he and son Matthew’s trentham team are heading home, Pitman is bound for hamilton on Monday to put

the finishing touches on his karaka Million 2Yo (1200m) candidate lovebug (nZ) (iffraaj) who travelled up to graeme and debbie Rogerson’s tuhikaramea base over the weekend.

the iffraaj filly will be Pitman’s sole representative in the race after ohio showgirl (nZ) (showcasing) suffered a knee injury that was operated on during the week.

“ohio showgirl had a knee fracture operated on and is in the paddock so lovebug will be our representative at ellerslie,” Pitman said.

“she has travelled up to the Rogerson property in hamilton and i’m going up on Monday to spend the week with her.

“she was going to have a gallop at ellerslie on tuesday but they moved those to Monday which is too tough on her after the trip north, so we won’t get to have a look at the track until raceday.

“she has been at trentham with our other horses for the past week and has galloped right-handed a few times and

(Continued from page 9)

handled it well so i’m not overly worried about that aspect for her.

“she is a lovely filly and we hope she can acquit herself well for her owners who are a great bunch of people.”

Pitman purchased lovebug for $20,000 from the haunui Farm draft during Book 2 at karaka last year. haunui Farm will offer her half-brother by first season sire Belardo during the Book 2 session at the national Yearling sale series that kicks off at karaka on January 26.

twenty-four hours on from securing the first group one win of his riding career, jockey

shaun Mckay is still coming to terms with the achievement.

the amiable 23-year-old was taking time on sunday morning to let the achievement sink in after booting home one of his favourite horses, The Mitigator (Master of design), in saturday’s gr.1 thorndon Mile (1600m) at trentham.

Shaun McKay celebrates his first Group One victory aboard Thorndon Mile (1600m) winner The Mitigator (Race Images – Grant Matthew)

the fact that the win was aboard a horse trained by his father Peter and that he and his mother kim were on hand to witness the feat first-hand meant even more to Mckay.

“it was really special and quite emotional in the birdcage afterwards,” Mckay said.

“since the day i started riding i have had the goal to ride a group one winner so to do it with Mum and dad there and on one of their horses, it just

doesn’t get any better than that.”Mckay admitted he had been

confident leading into the event with the pattern early in the day being heavily in favour of runners near the pace, a tactic that suits the Mitigator who races best in front.

“We had tried riding him back a little in his last two starts which didn’t suit so the tactics were to let him bowl along on saturday,” he said.

“the pattern in the earlier races were that you needed to be handy so it gave me plenty of confidence before the race.

“he led up and travelled really well and i thought we would be hard to beat turning for home.

“at the end Wyndspelle got pretty close and even though i was pretty sure we had got there, i didn’t want to celebrate just in case i was wrong.

“When i heard the call, it was the most amazing feeling although it is still taking some time to sink in.”

the joy of victory was dampened a little for Mckay after he incurred a

$1,000 fine and twelve-day suspension for breaking the whip rules in the run home but he is determined to come back stronger after the break.

“in the heat of the moment it can be hard to adhere to the whip guidelines, but they are the rules so i’m taking it on the chin,” he said.

“i’ve had a sluggish start to the season but in the last month or so i’ve hit my straps so i’m hoping i can keep that momentum going when i get back to riding.

“i really want to improve my riding and hopefully sometime in the future i would like to test myself overseas.

“one of my goals is to ride against the best in places like australia or even hong kong so i’m determined to get myself to that level.”

Mckay was quick to credit his partner, fellow jockey sam Collett, for the positive effect she has had on his race riding as well as helping him maintain his weight which is a critical factor in the longevity of a jockey’s career.

“My partner sam has really helped me and she plays a big part in helping me maintain my weight,” he said.

“i can ride at 54kgs and even 53kgs if i need to but it can be a struggle. sam cooks great meals which are a massive help and she is always so active that it spurs me on as well.

“now that i’ve ticked off that first group one win, the monkey is off my back a little but my aim is to get the next one and then more after that.

“they are the races that all jockeys want to win and i’m no different so we might celebrate this one a little in the next few days but then the hard work will start again.”

the measure of a thoroughbred stud’s prowess is the year-by-year consistency in turning

Matamata’s Mapperley stud has achieved that level of excellence, and its reputation is well-earned, but it has also raised the bar for a medium-sized thoroughbred breeding operation by producing three champions in the past ten years, two of which are already proven quality stallions at stud.

ten-time group one winner and

sangster (nZ) (savabeel), sir slick (nZ) (Volksraad) (six group one wins), descarado (nZ) (high Chaparral), thee auld Floozie (nZ) (Mastercraftsman), gondokoro (nZ) (Zabeel), Clint (nZ) (Casual lies) (singapore derby) and triple honour (nZ) (honours list).

the honour roll at Mapperley also boasts a significant number of group and listed winners which include this season’s gr.2 auckland thoroughbred Breeders’ stakes (1400m) winner, Yearn (nZ) (savabeel), who was group one

globetrotting star so You think (nZ) (high Chaparral), Champion three-year-old and six time group one winner dundeel (nZ) (high Chaparral) and last year’s gr.1 doncaster handicap (1600m) winner Brutal (nZ) (o’Reilly) were all raised on the stud’s 600 acres of rolling

placed in saturday’s thorndon Mile (1600m), and six times hong kong and group two winner, Rattan (nZ) (savabeel).

Mapperley boss simms davison has been hard at work building up both the stud’s broodmare and stallion strength, and with the support of a loyal client base, will present a strong commercial draft of 41 yearlings across the three books of new Zealand Bloodstock’s national Yearling sale, which commences on sunday.

one such home-bred yearling in Book 1 is lot 352, the bay colt by second-crop sire Contributer from Mapperley’s thunder gulch mare, thunderchine, and is therefore a half-brother to gr.1 Wakeful stakes (2000m) winner thunder lady (nZ) (Mastercraftsman), and also to the dam of the seven times winner and group three victor Princess kereru (nZ) (Pins).

“he is a well-grown colt, that exhibits great presence and is shaping up as one of the stars of our draft,” davison said.

Contributer made his sales debut at karaka 2019 which saw his yearlings sell for up to $250,000 and go into a number of leading stables, especially in australia, providing great opportunity for the highly performed son of successful sire, high Chaparral.

Mapperley’s close association with Victoria’s Rosemont stud continues this year with five yearlings by gr.1

VRC derby (2500m) winner tarzino in the draft as agent for the prominent australian stud – four colts and a filly from mares purchased from all over the world especially for mating to the high-class son of tavistock.

davison couldn’t be happier with the quality of type within its 19 Mapperley yearlings catalogued in Book 1, as well as having variety for buyers in the draft with 11 different sires represented.

two fillies on offer by australian sires which are sure to attract attention are lot 676, the bay Zoustar filly out of winning stakes-placed german-bred mare it’s all For You, and lot 381 which is a daughter of Japanese horse of the Year Maurice, whose first yearlings at the recent gold Coast sale sold particularly well.

Mapperley’s newest addition to its stallion roster is the Champion new Zealand three-Year-old in Puccini, who is represented by lot 126 – a bay colt from the twice winning darci Brahma mare navy Beach who herself is a half-sister to gr.2 Matamata Breeders’ stakes (1200m) winner te akau Coup (nZ) (thorn Park).

a son of encosta de lago, Puccini displayed a great turn of foot in winning the gr.1 thorndon Mile (1600m) but also having the necessary stamina to record a classy win in the gr.1 new Zealand derby (2400m) at ellerslie.

his oldest are only yearlings, but Mapperley will also offer two outstanding individuals by Puccini on the second day of Book two – lots 846, a filly, and 851, a colt, both from winning stakes-placed mares.

the Book 2 Mapperley consignment of 18 includes six yearlings by resident sire Complacent.

the progeny of the gr.1 spring Champion stakes (2000m) and gr.2 Chelmsford stakes (1600m) winning son of authorized have impressed in the sale ring, with his two-year-old colt from attention seeker fetching $170,000 at november’s new Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run sale.

stand-out colts by Complacent include lot 788 from the Volksraad mare Pirie Piper, a half-sister to the gr.1 nZ 2000 guineas (1600m) winner Clean sweep; lot 1037 – a half-brother to six times winner and gr.1 auckland Cup (3200m) placed Rose of Virginia - from the five-win Pins mare Centapin; and lot 1065 – out of an encosta de lago half-sister to the Champion new Zealand two-year-old in Maroofity – winner of the gr.1 ellerslie sires’ Produce stakes (1200m).

Mapperley’s Book two draft also includes a Complacent half-sister to group one performer Yearn.
