“i was going to bring her back for an earlier race but she had a small issue that saw her take a few extra days off so this race became our focus.
“i guess drawing barrier nine out of 10 isn’t ideal when she’s having her first look around ellerslie but that can’t be helped.
“We’ve got James Mcdonald aboard so it will be up to him to negate the draw but with those class jockeys you know you are going to get every opportunity.”
Currently sitting fourth on the order of entry for the $1
Pukekohe trainer Nigel Tiley heads into ellerslie’s New year’s day race meeting with a trio of runners that he believes are all capable of success in their chosen
events.First up will be unbeaten two-year-old filly Play That
Song (NZ) (Showcasing) who will tackle the Gr.2 Barneswood Farm eclipse Stakes (1200m) fresh up off a two-month break following her win in the listed Wellesley Stakes (1000m) on a Heavy 11 track at Trentham.
“We tipped her out for a break after she won at Trentham and she has done well in that time,” Tiley said.

million Karaka Million 2yo (1200m) on January 25, Tiley is keen to gauge where his filly sits against some of the competition she will face that day including race rival and current Karaka Million favourite Not an option (Not a Single doubt).
“it’s a hot field on New year’s day so we should get a good line on where we are heading into the Karaka Million,” he said.
“Not an option has been very impressive so far so if we can match it with him then i will be delighted.
“There is still some juice in the tank as we head to the Karaka Million but i think she can still be very competitive in this one.”
While Tiley is ruing a wide draw for Play That Song the boot is definitely on the other foot for Gr.2 Jamieson Park auckland Guineas (1600m) contender Riodini (NZ) (Proisir) who has drawn perfectly in barrier three.
The Proisir gelding is unbeaten in four starts with Tiley keen to see him maintain that record as he contemplates a Group one target for his next assignment.
Riodini will be looking to maintain his unbeaten record in the Gr.2 Jamieson Park Auckland Guineas
(1600m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day (Trish Dunell)
do with him next and if he goes like we expect then a start in the levin Classic (Gr.1, 1600m) at Trentham is likely.
“if he goes down there then we might tip him out for a spell as he has come a long way in this campaign.”
Tiley’s third runner is capable miler Demonetization (all Too Hard) in the Gr.2 rich Hill Mile (1600m), a race that Tiley believes is within his reach if he can get track conditions to suit.
“His form line doesn’t read well but i think he is back to somewhere near his best,” he said.
“The key to him is to have some easing in the track as he goes best when he can get his toe in the ground.
“i’m not sure we are going to get that as there doesn’t appear to be much rain in the forecast so we will just have to play with the hand we are dealt.
“His work has been good and he has drawn well. it is a very even line-up so i wouldn’t be surprised to see him go a cheeky race.”
– NZ racing desk “i couldn’t be happier with riodini as he
has done everything we have asked of him so far,” he said.
“it will be his biggest test on Wednesday but getting that draw is a big assist.
“There looks to be good early speed in the race so hopefully he can get a good sit just in behind them.
“i’m a little wary of him having to drag the field up to them near the corner which could leave him a sitting duck for the late closers, but if he can get an economical run then he should be right amongst it.
“The race will definitely tell us what we

ellerslie on Wednesday. With his vast experience in riding
the ellerslie track during his stellar career in the saddle, Vance, who trains in partnership with wife Jenny, knows the ellerslie 1200m start can actually assist those drawn wide at times.
“it’s probably one of the few courses where drawing wide at that distance can actually help at times,” he said.
“it’s a bit of an angled start and you are straight into a bend so if you have a bit of cover then sitting three-wide isn’t that bad.
“in saying that, we probably would have been happier to draw a bit closer but she will come into eleven if the emergencies don’t get a run and we will just have to deal with what happens from there.”
Its Destinys Child will tackle the Gr.1 Sistema Railway (1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day (Trish Dunell)
on the face of it drawing barrier fourteen in a premier Group one sprint race would tend to
put a dent in the confidence of most trainers regarding their chances to nail the thick end of the prize.
Bob Vance isn’t one of them as he believes his underrated sprinter Its Destinys Child (NZ) (Castledale) has what it takes to overcome that hurdle in the Gr.1 Sistema railway (1200m) at Continued on page 5

“Maija is doing really well although she still has problems with her left leg,” Vance said.
“She is probably sixty percent in that leg, which may be the best she will be, but given the early prediction was that she would be a quadriplegic, then i think that is an amazing result.
“She keeps herself pretty busy with several projects on the go including doing a little media work with the love racing team.
“She is taking it all day by day which is all you can do and hopefully she can continue to make the progress she has so far.”

its destinys Child burst into railway contention with a winning double at Pukekohe last month including a comprehensive victory in the listed Counties Bowl (1100m).
“She’s a mare that has always been a little underrated but we’ve always known the ability has been there,” Vance said.
“She was good last season although her form tailed off in her last couple of runs but you can put that down to the tracks she struck.
“There was rain on the day and she doesn’t cope with that as she needs a Good 3 to operate at her best.
“She goes her best races fresh so we tipped her out for a fortnight after the second Counties win.
“She came back in after that and has just done what she normally does. She looks well and with some luck we think she can go a good race.”
Vance also reported that daughter Maija was continuing to make steady progress in her recovery from the horrific injuries she suffered in a race fall at rotorua back in September last year.
Maija was told by doctors that she may never walk again but has defied that prediction to be back on two feet, albeit with some limitations, but a result that her parents could not have envisaged in the immediate aftermath of the fall.

unbeaten two-year-olds Preakness (NZ) (darci Brahma) and Trident (NZ) (Smart Missile) will try to continue a golden week for trainer andrew Campbell when they
line up in the Gr.2 Barneswood Farm eclipse Stakes (1200m) at ellerslie on New year’s day.
Campbell collected three wins over the weekend as Pimlico (NZ) (Proisir) and Peloton (NZ) (Charm Spirit) scored bold front-running victories at Matamata, then Vladivostok (NZ) (Tavistock) cleared maidens in impressive style at New Plymouth.
Vladivostok’s win carried extra significance, being by Tavistock, who sadly died at Cambridge Stud earlier this month. Campbell trained Tavistock to win two Group one races in the 2009-10 season for a similar group of owners.
all of the weekend’s winning trio hold nominations for the Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand derby (2400m) on February 29, with Pimlico at $41, Peloton at $26 and Vladivostok at $21 on the TaB’s Fixed odds market.
Campbell also has Tibetan (NZ) (Shocking) on the derby trail. The son of Shocking has placed in the Gr.3 Wellington Stakes (1600m) and listed 3yo Salver (2100m) in his last two
29, beating the subsequent winner opalescence (NZ) (Showcasing), while Trident made a big impression over 880 metres at ellerslie a month earlier. He missed the start by three lengths, but roared home to figure in a tight photo finish. He was beaten by a nose by devotioninmotion (NZ) (Proisir), but later won the race via protest.
“i think they’re both really nice two-year-olds,” Campbell said. “Preakness has the ace draw and should get a gun run from there. i’m not too worried about the other one drawing wide (gate 10), because he was always going to drop back anyway.
“it’s pretty hard to split them, i really like them both. Vinnie (Colgan) had the choice for this race, and he waited to see which one drew better before making his decision. i think he rates them as pretty even as well.”
Colgan will ride Preakness, with Jason Waddell taking the mount on Trident. Preakness is rated a $7 chance, while Trident is at $17.
Not an option heads the market at $2.30. The others in single figures are Play That Song ($4.20), american Princess ($7) and de la Terre ($8.50). – NZ racing desk.
Impressive three-year-old Vladivostok wins at New Plymouth (Race Images)
starts and is rated an $18 chance.“it’s been a great 24 hours or so, those three-year-
olds all ran really well,” Campbell said on Sunday.“i’m lucky to often have a nice little team of talented
horses around me. This year’s three-year-olds have always shown a fair bit, and we just looked after them while they were young. Now they’re coming up nicely and we can start to hopefully point them towards some good races.”
Campbell will now turn his attention to his two-year-olds, with Preakness and Trident facing off against a stellar eclipse line-up that features stakes winners Not an option (Not a Single doubt) and Play That Song (NZ) (Showcasing) as well as impressive Te rapa winner american Princess (NZ) (Jimmy Choux).

an eye-catching performance for third on the first day of the two-day New Plymouth carnival on
Friday paved the way for Waipukurau galloper Pep Torque (NZ) (Nadeem) to bounce back to winning form when taking out the Kamada Park City of New Plymouth Cup (1800m) on Sunday.
The Kirsty lawrence-trained and part-owned six-year-old hit a purple patch of form around this time last year when winning twice at Trentham in January and again at that venue in March, but his form then tailed off towards the end of that campaign.
Friday’s effort behind Malo Bik (NZ) (dalghar) over 1600m showed a win wasn’t far away and that came just 48-hours later, courtesy of a rails hugging ride by regular pilot Charlotte o’Beirne.
o’Beirne had Pep Torque travelling nicely in the trail throughout before slipping through on the inner of pacemaker Sergeant Blast (NZ) (darci Brahma) rounding the home bend. The pair went for gold at the 200m and drew clear of a brave Sergeant Blast with Cambridge visitor athena Baby (NZ) (Swiss ace) finishing on well for third ahead of Mongolianconqueror (NZ) (ocean Park).
lawrence admitted she and her fellow owners had been pretty vocal when supporting their charge during the race, who had been billeted at local trainer John Wheeler’s property over the past few days.
“He’s a real family pet this horse,”
lawrence said.“He’s got a team of loyal owners and
we’ve come away for a bit of a holiday and stayed at linda and John’s.
“We’ve had a bit of a trip and picked up the Taranaki Christmas Cup.
“it was a lovely ride and we were pretty pleased with him after the first day as he ran the fastest last 600m in that race.
“He’s as honest as the day is long and i’m really pleased for Charlotte as she has stuck with him and she just loves this horse.”
race favourite Mongolianconqueror showed he was ready to return to the form that saw him finish runner-up in the 2018 Gr.1 New Zealand derby
(2400m) with a grinding effort that had him doing his best work in the closing 100m of the race as he prepares for a tilt at the Gr.3 NZ Campus of innovation & Sport Wellington Cup (3200m) at Trentham next month.
