Maundy Thursday is the first of the three day (Triduum in Latin). The services are considered to be one continuous celebration of the mystery of our redemption: Christ’s institution of the Lord’s Supper, his suffering, his death on the cross, and his victory over sin, death, and Satan. We gather and leave in silence on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The Easter Vigil begins with the sacred story of our salvation. * THE SERMON HYMN Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

THE SERMON Pastor Zumwalt THE ADDRESS Pastor: In this Lenten season we have heard our Lord’s call to intensify our struggle against sin, death, and the devil - all that keeps us from loving God and each other. This is the struggle to which we were committed at Baptism; God’s forgiveness and the power of his Spirit to amend our lives continue with us because of his love for us in Jesus, our Savior. Within the community of his Church, God never wearies of giving peace and new life. In the words of absolution we receive forgiveness as from God himself. This absolution we should not doubt, but firmly believe that thereby our sins are forgiven before God in heaven, for it comes to us in the name and by the command of our Lord. We who receive God’s love in Jesus Christ are called to love one another, to be servants to each other as Jesus himself became our servant. Our commitment to this loving service is signified in the washing of feet, following the example of the Lord gave us on the night before his death. It is, however, in the Holy Communion that the members of Christ’s body participate most intimately in his love. Remembering our Lord’s last supper with his disciples, we eat the bread and share the cup of this meal. Together we receive the Lord’s gift of himself and participate in that new covenant which makes us one in him. The Eucharist is the promise of the great banquet we will share with all the faithful when our Lord returns, the culmination of our reconciliation with God and each other. * ORDER OF CONFESSION Let us make confession to God. Almighty God, merciful Father: I, a troubled and penitent sinner, confess to you all my sins and iniquities with which I have offended you and for which I justly deserve your punishment. But I am sorry for them, and repent of them, and pray for your boundless mercy. For the sake of the suffering and death of your Son, Jesus Christ, be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being; forgive my sins, give me your Holy Spirit for the amendment of my sinful life, and bring me to life everlasting. Amen.

Almighty God in his mercy has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. Through his Holy Spirit he cleanses us and gives us power to proclaim the mighty deeds of God who called us out of darkness into the splendor of his light. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Martin Luther writes in the Small Catechism that we receive forgiveness from the pastor as from God himself, by no means doubting but firmly believing that our sins are thereby forgiven before God in heaven. Those desiring the individual assurance of forgiveness come forward in two lines to the altar. The pastor declares, “In obedience to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins.” The penitent responds, “Amen.” When the individual absolution has been offered to all, the service continues:

The peace of the Lord be with you all. And also with you.

The Peace of the Lord is shared with those seated around you. The Lord be with you. And also with you. * PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Holy God, source of all love, on the night of his betrayal, Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment: To love one another as he had loved them. By your Holy Spirit write this commandment in our hearts; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON: Jeremiah 31:31-34 31"Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more."

THE SECOND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 11:17-32 17But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. 18For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part,19for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. 20When you come together, it is not the Lord’s supper that you eat. 21For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk. 22What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not. 23For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 25In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. As the bread is broken, the congregation joins the pastor in singing: THE DISTRIBUTION (Please be seated. Amen. * THE POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Lord God, in a wonderful Sacrament you have left us a memorial of your suffering and death. May this Sacrament of your body and blood so work in us that the way we live will proclaim the redemption you have brought; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. At the noonday service, the worshipers depart in silence. At the evening service, the service continues with the stripping of the altar, which signifies our Lord’s humiliation. The congregation listens to the chanting of Psalm 22 as the worship leaders, altar guild members and youth strip the altar. The worshipers then depart in silence at the end of the Psalm.

Let us pray. Lord Jesus, you carried our sins in your own body on the tree so that we might have life. May we and all who remember this day find new life in your now and in the world to come, where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

THE PASSION ACCORDING TO ST. JOHN: John 18:1–19:42 The congregation remains seated and reads the words in bold print. In this reading, John uses the phrase “the Jews” to refer to the religious leaders in Jerusalem. Jesus and his closest followers were all Jews as well. 1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, "Whom do you seek?" 5They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground. 7So he asked them again, "Whom do you seek?" Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest, 16but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. 17 The servant girl at the door said to Peter, "You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not." 18Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. So they took Jesus, 17and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." 20Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but rather, 'This man said, I am King of the Jews.'" 22Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written." 23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24so they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be." This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, "They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots." So the soldiers did these things, 25but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" 27Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. 28After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), "I thirst." 29A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, "It is finished," and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. 31Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. 36For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: "Not one of his bone will be broken." 37And again another Scripture says, "They will look on him whom they have pierced." 38After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

THE BIDDING PRAYER The congregation remains seated for the Bidding Prayer. The Assisting Minister indicates for whom to we are to pray. After a pause for silent prayer, the Presiding Minister prays the petition. After each petition the congregation responds “Amen”. After all the prayers have been said, the Assisting Minister will say, “Finally, let us pray for all those things for which our Lord would have us ask”.

This service is an adaptation of the ancient Tenebrae service, dating from the 8th century. “Tenebrae” means “shadows” or “darkness”. It is a service of worship that moves from light to darkness, with the fading light symbolizing the ebbing life of the crucified Lord and the awesome darkness of sin and evil. The loud sounds which mark the end of the service is a reminder of the awfulness of Christ’s death. For a little while, the church will be in total darkness, symbolizing the ultimate consequence of human sinfulness. But before the service ends, one lighted candle will be returned reminding us of the resurrection of Christ and the victory he has won through his death and resurrection. SILENT MEDITATION

The congregation receives a hand candle with their bulletin and enters the sanctuary in silence. All candles remain

unlighted at the beginning of the service. The congregation stands as the pastor enters. He lights the paschal candle

and says:

May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.

The ushers light their candles from the paschal candle and spread the candlelight throughout the worship area.

Finally, they light the candles in the chancel.

The pastor chants the words “The light of Christ” three times and the congregation answers on the same tone

three times.

AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM Brothers and sisters in Christ: In Holy Baptism our Lord Jesus Christ received you and made you members of his Church. You have been nourished at his holy table and called to be witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Now, therefore, I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the Church, the faith in which we baptize.

Do you renounce all the forces of evil, the devil, an all his empty promises? I do.

Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. * THE OFFERTORY PRAYER Blessed are you, O Lord our God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts. With them we offer ourselves to your service and dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made, for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. * THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.
