BACKGROUNDTrident University International (TUI) has been serving the needs of a highly-motivated adult learner student population, with diverse professional backgrounds and experiences, since it was originally established as a branch campus of Touro College, New York on July 1, 1998, by its founding President and CEO, Dr. Yoram Neumann. Today, TUI operates from its headquarters in

Cypress, California as a privately-owned independent academic institu-tion. Since its inception, TUI has become the university of choice for thousands of our men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, and today those proud servicemen and servicewomen account for more than 80% of our student population.

TUI is an educational leader and experienced at helping adult learners achieve world-class instruction, but it’s the singular student-centered approach that really makes Trident University so well-respected and admired by our students, alumni, faculty and staff.

TUI was initially accredited as a branch campus of Touro College by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Touro College was subsequently re-accredited by Middle States in 2004, which included the TUI branch campus.

TUI was accredited in February 2005 by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and offers Federal Student Aid to its stu-dents. Trident continues to hold this accreditation today.

After a change in leadership in October 2007, TUI was governed by a new board and its name was changed from Touro University Interna-tional to TUI University.

In January 2011, TUI University officially changed its name to Trident University International.

The current President and Chief Executive Officer of Trident University International is Dr. Lucille Sansing.

MISSIONThe mission of Trident University International (TUI) is to help diverse adult learners, including current and former members of the “military family,” earn high-quality baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees. TUI uses an innovative approach to education which employs proven case-based and applied learning methodologies through an exclusively on-line model. Through this on-line model, our primarily adult learners are empowered to acquire critical problem solving and strategic think-ing skills they can apply immediately to enhance their lives and further their careers. ACCREDITATIONAccording to the U.S. Department of Education, “The goal of accredita-tion is to ensure that education provided by institutions of higher edu-cation meets acceptable levels of quality. Accrediting agencies, which are private educational associations of regional or national scope, develop evaluation criteria and conduct peer evaluations to assess whether or not those criteria are met. Institutions and/or programs that request an agency’s evaluation and that meet an agency’s criteria are then ‘accredited’ by that agency.”

• Trident University was accredited in February 2005 by the Accredit-ing Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), 985 Atlantic Avenue, #100, Alameda, CA 94501, 510-748-9001, www.wascsenior.org.

• The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is one of six regional accrediting associations in the United States. The Com-mission provides assistance to schools located in California, Hawaii, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Mar-shall Islands, and East Asia.

• Trident University is the only fully online university regionally accred-ited by WASC.

• Trident University retains the same accreditation as USC, UCLA, Pep-perdine University, Berkley and other distinguished institutions in California.

• Regional accreditation standards are higher than national accredita-tion agencies, making regional accreditation preferred by colleges and universities wishing to be recognized as institutions that possess excellence within higher education.

• Nationally accredited institutions typically accept transferable credits from regionally accredited colleges and universities, where regionally accredited colleges and universities will not always accept credits from nationally accredited institutions.

• Employers aware of the differences in regional and national accreditations may prefer a degree that was completed at a region-ally accredited institution.

Gary WoodsOn November 3, 2011, Gary Woods, former Director of the Department of Defense’s Educational Opportunities, joined TUI’s Board of Managers.

Woods brings 40 years of experience to the Board, serving in leadership positions for military voluntary education and transition

programs. He has worked on college campuses as well as on Marine, Navy, Army and Air Force installations around the world.

Prior to joining Trident’s Board, Woods served as Vice Chancellor of military and veterans programs for Brandman University. Earlier in his career, he was a Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness and a Senior Advisor to the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy. In addition to his role as Director of Educational Oppor-tunities, he also served as Chief of the Department of Defense Volun-tary Education Program.

Woods serves on several board committees that have oversight of the quality of academic programs and services provided to military person-nel and their families.

General (retired) William R. Looney IIIGeneral (Retired) William R. Looney III was appointed to the TUI Board of Managers on September 29, 2010.

General Looney retired from the United States Air Force as Commander, Air Educa-

tion and Training Command. As the AETC Commander, he was respon-sible for all Air Force recruiting, education and training. His command included the Air Force Recruiting Service, Air University and 2 num-bered air forces consisting of 13 bases, 1,750 aircraft and more than 92,000 active duty, reserve, guard, civilians and contractors. Today he serves as a consultant to a broad range of international organizations.

Looney graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1972. He is a highly decorated officer with over 4,200 flying hours, 62 in combat, and 2,500 in the F15 Eagle.

ACADEMIC leadership TEAMThe academic leadership team is a voting body of the university, charged with upholding the academic integrity of the university and ensuring the academic excellence of its degree programs, concentra-tions and certificates.

Its membership is made up of senior academic leaders including the Provost and Deans, faculty leaders including Program Directors and Faculty Leads, and key leaders of academic support functions such as the VP of Institutional Support and the Registrar. This body is responsi-ble for all academic policies of the university and provides input to the Leadership Team and the Board of Managers, as appropriate, on other key university matters.

Dr. Indira R. Guzman

Dr. Indira Guzman is an Associate Professor of Information Systems and Business Administration at Trident University International. She is also a visiting professor for Latin American Universities and Senior Research Associate for several information technology and development projects. Dr.

Guzman holds numerous degrees including a Doctorate in Information Science and Technology, from Syracuse University.

Dr. Guzman’s research in information studies focuses on the impact of information technologies in organizations and in the society. She has conducted several studies related to human resources in information systems, specifically, the study of the occupational culture of informa-tion professionals, their organizational role, gender and ethnic diver-sity in the field, and recruitment and retention issues.

Dr. Frank GomezCaptain Frank Gomez served in the Air Defense Artillery of the US Army for four years. After completing his undergraduate studies and a Masters in Public Health, he continued his studies at UCLA’s School of Public Health, and earned his doctor ate in Public Health. He then worked for 29 years for the Los Angeles County, Department

of Health Services in Environmental Health. He was responsible for developing the first Environmental Impact Unit in the nation at a major health department. He was appointed to the State REHS Certification Board, and became a state and national expert on community noise control. He was involved in many significant research studies for the County of Los Angeles. He has taught courses at UCLA SPH, California State University at Los Angeles (CSULA), and California State University at Dominguez Hills (CSDH). While at CSDH, Dr. Gomez was invited to join TUI. He became intrigued with the stimulating idea to “do” dis-tance learning. He believes now that with distance learning, students can learn more at a higher level at TUI than in prior educational experi-ences. He is currently a professor of Health Sciences at TUI and is the Director of the Ph.D. Program in Health Sciences.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONThe Trident University Alumni Association was designed to help gradu-ates stay connected and involved. Currently, Trident University’s alumni association has grown from 600 members to 2,300 nearly quadrupling its size, since early 2011.

As a TUI alumni member, graduates can build friendships, establish ca-reer networks, make a difference in the lives of others, and help ensure the continuation and growth of the university. Additionally, participa-tion in the Trident Alumni Association keeps graduates informed of university news and reconnect with classmates and professors from all over the world. The Alumni Association is active in promoting the inter-ests of TUI nationally and worldwide and is instrumental in recruiting high-caliber students into our active community of learner-leaders.

More alumni chapters are planned and the university has begun laying the groundwork for a non-geographical Doctoral Alumni Chapter which is currently 150 members strong.

Sergeant Major of the Army,Kenneth O. Preston (retired)

Sergeant Major of the Army Kenneth O. Preston served as the 13th Sergeant Major of the Army from January 15, 2004 to March 1, 2011. He retires as the longest serving Sergeant Major of the Army with more than seven years in the position.

He is currently the President of Homes for Our Troops (HFOT), a national non-profit organiza-tion assisting severely injured Veterans who

spend all or part of their daily lives confined to a wheelchair. SMA Preston holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Master of Business Administration degrees from Trident University International.

Chief Master Sergeant, Anthony L. Bishop (retired)

was the Command Chief Master Sergeant (CCMSgt) for Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. In that position, he led the 45,000 total force enlisted airmen of the Pacific Air Forces. His responsibilities included advising the PACAF commander on all matters affecting the training, professional develop-ment and effective utilization of assigned enlisted personnel and coordinating with the headquarters staff, commanders, and senior

personnel on administration and implementation of command policy. His background included various duties in aircraft maintenance, First Sergeant at the squadron, group and headquarters levels, and CCMSgt at the wing and MAJCOM levels. Bishop retired from the U.S. Air Force December 31, 2009 after more than 30 years of service. He currently serves as the Director of Enterprise Operations Center for USAA.

Trident University Student Veterans of America (TUI SVA Chapter)

Trident University is pleased to announce the formation of the TUI SVA Chapter. Student Veterans of America is a national organization that aims to provide military veterans with re-sources, support and advocacy needed to suc-ceed in higher education and post graduation.

TUI is the first fully online university with an active SVA chapter. Organized by veterans, the TUI chapter serves as a virtual social environment in which other veterans and their support-ers can come together in a united effort of mutual support. The TUI SVA chapter enhances veterans’ social and educational experience while attending TUI, helping them achieve their higher education and career goals.

TUI Online Store Trident University launched the first online school store in December 2011. Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS)The BSCS program prepares students for entry level computer science positions in business, industry, and not-for-profit organizations. Specifi-cally, the program assists candidates in obtaining quality undergradu-ate level content expertise in software engineering with an emphasis on e-business infrastructure. This program includes quality undergrad-uate-level hands on exposure to computer programming, databases, computer operating systems and structure networks, dynamic web en-gineering, security, and web services. All courses are application based.

Students admitted into a masters degree pro-gram holding a bachelors degree in a different discipline may be required to take prerequisite courses at the undergraduate level. If required, these courses will provide the student with foundational knowledge necessary to suc-cessfully complete subsequent courses in the graduate-level program of study. Doctor of Philosophy in Business AdministrationThe purpose of the Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration program is to prepare students to conduct and participate in research in the field of business administration, assume faculty positions in business administration at colleges and universities, and acquire the knowledge necessary to consult in or manage a variety of organiza-tions. Students will gain an extensive background and comprehension of various areas of business administration and will learn skills needed for acquisition and application of advanced knowledge including current developments in their area of specialty. The program also provides students with the ability to make contributions by publishing in peer-reviewed journals and/or presenting research in professional conferences.

Doctor of Philosophy in Health SciencesThe Doctor of Philosophy represents the highest level of achievement in any academic discipline. TUI is proud to offer a research degree re-sulting in a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences. Students who earn this degree are qualified to enter academia or the top levels of health care administration or health executive positions in government and the private sector.

Students select either the educator/researcher or practitioner concen-tration in International Health or Health Care Administration. Students planning to enter an academic career will have the opportunity to learn skills for effective teaching in academic health profession pro-grams.

Entrance Requirement

Have an earned masters degree from a region-ally accredited college or university with at least 30 graduate level semester credits.

An official transcript of all prior academic work must be submitted.

Possess analytical and critical thinking skills suffi-cient to deal with the doctoral program, dem-onstrated by a sample of research or academic publication. Must submit a sample of research oriented writing, or publication.

Possess writing and oral communication skills sufficient to conduct and deliver the results of meaningful research. Must submit an essay that includes current personal, intellectual, and pro-fessional interests and an explanation of why the student is applying.

A current Curriculum Vita (Resume)

Possess information technology skills sufficient to participate effectively in the TUI Ph.D. peda-gogical model.

Possess internet skills to conduct research ef-fectively at a Ph.D. level.

Have successfully completed, with a grade of B or better, at least one course in Research Meth-ods or Statistics at the masters or higher level. If a student does not meet the research require-ment, it can be met by successfully completing a Research Method course from the TUI masters program with a grade of B or better. This course will be considered a prerequisite and not in-cluded in the total number of Ph.D. course units required by the student’s degree plan.

International students must have minimum TOEFL of 550/213/79.

Have a grade point average of 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale) on all work completed during the masters degree.

Course STRUCTURE

While tests and textbooks may be standard teaching aids for many aca-demic institutions, Trident faculty find them less effective in promoting research and critical thinking, making our modules and methodology among the most innovative in the world of education.

Every course at TUI follows the same format/model. Each course has defined learning objectives. Courses are 12 weeks long and are divided into 6 modules. The first modules cover specialized topics and have specific case study papers, Session Long Project (SLP) and threaded discussion assignments related to the module concepts. The final mod-ule provides an opportunity to integrate the course topics and requires preparation and the submission of a self-reflective essay assessing learning outcomes in the course. Students should strive to complete each module within every two week period.

Final grades are posted and available for viewing by students after the 12th week of the session.

Module ELEMENTS

The instructional material in each module has consistent elements:

Module Home PageThis section identifies the key issues and concepts of the module. It usually has some introductory text material, possibly a video or PowerPoint presentation outlining the module’s issues, and always the specific learning objectives for the module which are aligned to the course objectives. Students should read the material on the Home Page before proceeding.

Background MaterialsThis section of the module provides the required readings and may include presentations and optional readings intended to supplement course content. Together with what is usually provided in the module home page and the assignments themselves, these references and resources will give context and background information needed to analyze and complete the case assignment.

Case AssignmentCase-based teaching develops critical thinking as well as analytic, re-search, argumentation, and writing skills. The Case Assignment (case study) is a written description of a problem or situation. Most cases are a snapshot of a particular situation within a complex environment. The purpose of the case assignment is to place the student in a posi-tion which will require research, synthesis of information and critical thought. The student may be asked to distinguish pertinent from peripheral facts, to identify central alternatives among several issues competing for attention, and to formulate strategies and recommen-dations. The case-based method provides opportunities for students to sharpen problem-solving skills and to improve the ability to think and reason rigorously. The case assignments represent 60% of the student’s overall grade.

Session Long ProjectThe Session Long Project (SLP) emphasizes the personalized applica-tion of each module’s concepts from the course. Students are required to engage in an original integrative project reflecting comprehensive knowledge of and ability to apply the course materials. Each compo-nent of the SLP is graded on a modular basis. The Session Long Project represents 30% of the student’s overall grade.

Threaded DiscussionEach module requires participation in a threaded discussion (TD) about some part of the module topic. Generally a professor will pose a provocative question or comment for response, but the subsequent discussion may evolve in different ways as other students engage and enjoy a brisk discussion of the issues. The professor will monitor the discussion and provide guidance where necessary. The threaded discussions represent 10% of the student’s overall grade.

THE VISION FOR A 100% ONLINE UNIVERSITY started several years prior to its formal organization in 1998, by Dr. Yoram and Edith Neumann. Yoram developed the The Robust Learning Model (RLM), with several contributions from Edith. The model was presented for the fist time at the professional conference of the Academy of Business Administration in 1996 Athens, Greece where it was received with a standing ovation. The RLM was developed by the Neumann’s for distance and online learning and is used today as the guiding principles of online education world wide.

TUI IS ESTABLISHED in July 1998 by Dr. Yoram Neumann.• TUI starts as Touro University International a branch campus of Touro College, a New York not-for-profit educational corporation. • The first headquarters is opened and put into operation. Location:10542 Calle Lee, Suite 102, Los Alamitos, CA 90720.

1999

THE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION is established by Robert Koester.• The first pilot session begins in February and the first formal session starts in the Fall of 1999.

2000

THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCESis established by Dr. Edith Neumann in Fall 2000.• The first pilot course is offered BHS328 in the college of Health Science by Dr. Afshin Afrookhteh with enrollment of 11 students.

2002

THE COLLEGE OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS is established in December 2001• The Emergency Management program was created in the College of Health Sciences in response to the events of September 11, 2001 (9/11).

THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION is established by Dr. Edith Neumann in Fall 2002• Sunday, August 18, 2002 Touro University International holds it’s Inaugural graduation at the Sequoia Conference Center In Buena Park, California with over 43 Graduation Candidates. Kerry Mazzoni, Secretary for Education for the State of California is TUI’s first keynote speaker.

• Dr. Sana Ghaddar is TUI’s first ever Ph.D. Graduate. • TUI now offers degrees in Business Administration, Health Sciences, Education, Computer Science and Information Technology Management.

LARGER GRADUATION VENUESunday, August 15, 2004, The Cerritos Center, Cerritos, California. At TUI’s third graduation they had to move to a larger site to accommodate a growing number of graduates.

WASCIn February 2005 TUI University gained an accreditation from WASC, as a separate institution making TUI University the only fully-online university to be accredited by WASC.

2007

SUMMIT PARTNERSIn November 2007, Touro University International was acquired by Summit Partners, a private equity and venture capital firm and its name was changed to TUI University.

2008

10TH ANNIVERSARYin 2008 TUI celebrated it’s tenth anniversary. • On August 9, 2008 TUI University held a graduation ceremony at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Cerritos, California. Graduates and 800 guests from around the United States and throughout the world attended, Alexander Haig, four-star general, Secretary of State, White House Chief of Staff, and Supreme Commander in Europe (NATO) during the Nixon and Ford administrations was the keynote speaker.

• Completed implementation of the CDAD (Course Development and Delivery) system which allows student to view their course materials online or select the materials for downloading.

NEW CEO & PRESIDENTOn July 15, 2009, TUI University welcomed a new CEO/President, Kenneth J. Sobaski, who replaced founder Dr. Yoram Neumann.

2010

NEW GRADUATION VENUE July 31, 2010, TUI moves the graduation ceremony to the Terrace Theater in Long Beach. A bigger and better commence-ment location to accommodate a growing number of graduates.

2011

THE NEW TUIJanuary 2011, TUI Starts the New Year by announcing “TUI is now Trident University International” and will retain the acronym of TUI.

INTERIM CEO & PRESIDENTJuly 2011 to December 2011 Nolan Miura fills in as Interim CEO & President. Miura continues to provide guidance to the University in his role as Vice Chairman on Trident’s Board of Managers.

THE IT SYSTEMS UPGRADED TUI University can now support 20,000 students and 1,000 faculty members.

December 5, 2012Dr. Lucille Sansing replaces Nolan A. Miura as President and Chief Executive Officer.
