Whats on the WebA brief look at what’s happening in magic on the Internet

There is a new invention in which you can make your own movies and appear in them using a process like the Pepper’s Ghost effect.

The invention called HolograFx is discussed on page 7 but here is a video telling how tomake a pepper’s ghost.

Magic SYMbolThe

Starting a new year, let’s make it magical.

Well I hope you had a wonderful holiday season. The first of December we had our assembly Holiday banquet and I was one of 4 performers who entertained the assembly members and our friends and family. We had a dealer lecture by Harry Allen of Daytona Magic and it looked like he must have brought half the store with him - Harry is a fantastic demonstrator and the one-liners appear to flow out of him so effortlessly. At the meeting I was elected as 2nd Vice President of our magic club and we had a newly elected secretary. I have been a member of my local magic club since 1981 and I have seen a lot of changes over those years. We’ve had years full of young members and years when there were very few. At the De-cember meeting we had two young members join our club. I am so happy to see that we have young people interested in magic and joining a wonderful organization. So I received a lot of magic books for Christmas, I received 3 books by Eugene Burger, and Magic. 1400s–1950s by Mike Caveney and Jim Steinmeyer I can’t wait to start reading them - I’ve already taken a sneak peak. Did you get any magic as gifts for Christmas? Did you perform any magic at Christmas or Holiday parties? I was able to work with other club magicians and perform at the Kosair Charities Christmas banquet and performed for the many children and their parents. I even got my picture taken with Rick Pitino, head coach of the 2013 NCAA champion Louisville Cardinals. Everyone was having such a good time and loved the mag-ic. Please make sue and send me pic-tures and info on performances that you and your assembly are doing so we can share in the SYMbol with everyone else. This month The Magic Symbol does a magic trick... the magazine will guess a number that you pick.

See you next month......

MentalismThe Time Trick Select any number on the clock. You have a completely free choice.

Remember your number.

Follow the straight line from your number, through the center of the clock and to the number on the other side.

Take the two numbers that are connected by the line and subtract the smaller number from the larger one.

You now have a new number. Please remember it.

Think of your number

The Magic Symbol will now guess your number...

Cool Magic inventionsholograFX, a magic set that lets kids project holograms just like pepper’s ghostMark Setteducati is a Magician and Inventor of Magic, Illusions, Games and Puzzles. Mark is the most successful Artists in the world to integrate Magic and Illusion into commercial products. One of the themes Mark has worked with for many years is the use of mirrors

in toys, games, art, and architecture. One of his mirror inventions was marketed with Erno Rubik and called ‘Rubiks Illusion’. The ‘Magic Works’ series, marketed by Milton Bradley was the largest selling Magic product line in Toy Industry history, with sales of 20 million dollars a year.

He created home versions of TV Game shows, including Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. In 2001, Mark was Magic Consultant for Mattel’s Harry Potter License. His latest invention is the HolograFX,

“It’s all about the show,” says Setteducati of the more than 20 illusions incorporated into the game. The technology stems from the classic magic trick pepper’s ghost — a reflection-based illusion used to make objects appear or disappear.

To make holograms, Mark Setteducati and Andre Armenante’s HolograFX relies on the technology behind the classic pepper’s ghost magic trick.

Kids can even become the stars of their own magic shows by recording videos of themselves that can be uploaded and projected as holograms.

Setteducati teamed up with filmmaker and fellow magician Andre Armenante to create the sci-fi adventure, which arrived in stores like Toys “R” Us in September of this year.

“It’s completely different from anything else on the

market so it stands apart in that way and it’s magical,” Mary Couzin, CEO and founder of the Chicago Toy & Game Group, says of HolograFX. “The 3-D aspect can be personalized by projecting yourself into the game, which is also a different type of game mechanic. It was amazing.”

Turn your Smartphone or ipod™ Touch into a holographic magic show with holograFX.

Mentalism Time Flies - Clock predictionHere’s an easy prediction effect. All you need is a picture of a clock or you can use the actual face of an analog clock or watch to perform the trick.

Effect:A spectator freely names a number and begins to spell the number around the face of a clock. This is repeated twice with the number that the spectator lands on. After three rounds, the spectator lands on a number. You prove that you knew ahead of time which number he would land on. This is a mentalism effect. This self-working trick is very easy to learn and perform and requires no gimmicks or sleight of hand moves.

Secret:This effect is based on a quirk with the numbers on a clock face. Just follow the instructions and remember the sequence.

Materials:Any analog clock or a picture of a clock A piece of paperPen

preparation:Ahead of time, write the number “one” or draw a clock at 1:00 on a slip of paper. Fold the paper so the spectator cannot see the number within.

performance:Ask the spectator to select a number between one and twelve. While the spectator can select any number, as an example, we’ll say that the spectator selected the number “nine.” Have the spectator tell you the number.

Tell the spectator to start at 12:00 on the clock face and to spell the letters in their number - counting through the numbers on the clock in clockwise order. For our example “nine,” the spectator counts “n,” “i,” “n,” “e” - moving four spaces and ends on the number “four.”

After the spectator lands on a number as a result of “Step One,” tell him to spell the new number. In our example, the spectator landed on the number “four” so he will spell “f,” “o,” “u,” “r” and move four numbers and land on the number “eight.”

Repeat by having the spectator spell the new number. In our example, the spectator landed on the number “eight” so he will spell “e,” “i,” “g,” “h,” “t,” - moving five times to land on the number “one.”

Tell the spectator to open your note that has been sitting in plain view. Reveal that you predicted ahead of time that he would land on the number “one.”

In this prediction effect, you made it appear that you have predicted the future. The secret is based on a quirk with the spelling of the numbers and the arrangement of the numbers on the clock face. No matter which number a spectator selects on the clock face, and as long as he or she starts at 12:00, will always end up on one. Go ahead and try this with different numbers to get a feel for how it works. Just as long as you follow the instructions, you always end up at 1:00. While I call this a “prediction” effect, magicians refer to this as a force. No matter what parameter a spectator selects, they will always end up with the same outcome, 1:00. It appears that the spectator has a free choice but actually doesn’t.

This issue has several effects regarding time. The ability to travel through time offers lots of possibilities for magic tricks. You can start with a certain situation, mix it up, and then magically return to it at the end, just as if you’ve traveled back in time to the point where you started the trick. For example, this could apply time travel to a coin trick where you bring a coin from out of your pocket and place it under a handkerchief. The coin vanishes and returns to your pocket, back where it started.

Time travel can also be applied to tricks where you freeze time and cause something to happen. Again, this can include causing something to go from one place to another, changing colors, writing a prediction, providing something that you’ve written in the future and more.

What if you could really travel back and forth through time? You’ll probably think of lots of possibilities with tricks that you already perform.

Time Travel and Magic

Easiest Card Trick / StuntEffect: You take out a deck of cards and ask the spectator to shuffle it thoroughly. You then ask him to name any two cards (just the name of the card, without the suit). After the spectator names two cards, you put your hand on the deck of cards, and concentrate hard on it. After a minute or so, you ask the spectator to turn over the deck of cards and fan through it. Astonishingly, the cards that he names are right next to each other.

You Need: A deck of cards. Performance When the spectator names two cards (remember to tell him not to name the suit), let’s say Ace and Ten, he is really naming four cards of each kind since the suit is not specified.

The theory is that out of those eight cards (Ace of Spades, Ace of Hearts, Ace of Clubs, Ace of Diamonds, Ten of Spades, Ten of Hearts, Ten of Clubs, Ten of Diamonds), at least one of the Aces in the deck will be next to one of the Tens.

Don’t believe this? Try it out! About 10% of the time, there may be a card between the Ace and the Ten. If that happens, simply tell the spectator that you are not concentrating hard enough. When you repeat the trick, it will work. You can never find a trick that’s easier than this one!

Note: This trick can be done to the same spectator a few times, but if you do it too many times, they will eventually figure it out. So, don’t overdo this one!

S.Y.M. ACHIEVEMENT PIN PROGRAM

The S.Y.M. Achievement Pin Program allows S.Y.M. members to explore 10 areas of magic,

demonstrate skill in these areas, and receive recognition for their accomplishments. The

progressive nature of the Achievement Pin Program also measures how young magicians are

advancing in their magical journey. As candidates work from bronze to gold, they will learn

valuable leadership skills aimed at increasing their confidence in all areas of life.

S.Y.M advisors are available to help members work toward earning their pins and to ensure that

candidates meet all requirements. S.Y.M. members who do not belong to an S.Y.M. assembly

will be able to receive help from advisors via mail or electronically.

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. The Achievement Pin Program coordinator will provide worksheets in which candidates and

adult supervisors can record candidates’ progress.

2. Advisors or organizers must return completed forms to the Achievement Pin Program

coordinator. Completed paperwork will be forwarded to the S.Y.M. director, after which pins

will be awarded.

3. Pins will be awarded for completed tricks only. In other words, demonstrating a Double Lift or

a French Drop does not count. The Double Lift must be presented within a completed trick; e.g.,

using a Double Lift to force or find a card.

4. Members may receive pins in more than one category, as long as all requirements are met for

each category.

5. S.Y.M. assembly members will test for pins at an assembly meeting.

6. Associate S.Y.M. members will test for pins by submitting an application, along with a video,

DVD or electronic link to the Achievement Pin Program Coordinator.

7. Each candidate will submit an application fee of

$4.00 for each bronze and silver pin, and

$5.00 for each gold pin.

Make your check out to the Society of Young Magicians. Mail it and your Completed Application to:
