James Grant A recipient of the Aaron Copland Award in 2002, James Grant is frequently commissioned by individuals, choruses, chamber ensembles, wind ensembles and orchestras who perform his music throughout the world. Grant's colorful musical language is known by musicians and audiences for its honed craft and immediacy, and his ability to compose music appropriate to specific levels of experience has found him working with groups ranging from professional orchestras, choruses, solo recitalists, new music ensembles and ballet companies to community choruses, university choral and instrumental ensembles, and youth orchestras. His engaging recital and chamber music is taught in university studios worldwide and is programmed yearly at music festivals, symposia, and clinics; it is distributed exclusively through Potenza Music. Grant and his wife, fine-art photographer Elizabeth Siegfried, live and work in Oxtongue Lake, ON, and in Siesta Key, FL.

  • Tribute Commissioned in 2002 by conductor Michael Gagliardo and the Etowah Youth Symphony Orchestra, Tribute commemorates the heroism shown on September 11, 2001 and reflects on the shocked and confused response of a nation struggling to understand what had happened. I composed Tribute while in residence at Copland House in Cortlandt Manor, NY, where one of Americas greatest composers, Aaron Copland, lived and worked the last thirty years of his life. The music was composed in his spacious glass-walled studio between March 23 and April 27, 2002. With gratitude to Copland House and as my own "tribute" to Mr. Copland, the composer's initials A.C. are heard at the open and close of Tribute as major chords on A and C, played by the strings; and echoes of Mr. Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man are used both rhythmically and melodically as structural motives throughout.

A note to the conductor In addition to commemorating the events of 9/11, Tribute is especially well-suited for concerts celebrating other national holidays, such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Presidents Day, Martin Luther King Day, Flag Day, and July 4. The current edition, made in the spring of 2016, represents a slight revision to the original 2002 score with regard to metrical notation and instrumentation. While Tribute calls for Clarinets in A and Trumpets in C, alternate parts for Clarinets in B-flat and Trumpets in B-flat are included and, of course, are equally as effective. Owing to the awkward keys that result for the B-flat and F transposing instruments, the B-flat parts (Clarinets, Bass Clarinet, Trumpet) and French Horn parts are written without key signature, for ease of reading. Tribute can be performed with two horns, playing from the Horn 1 and 2 parts; however, four horns are preferable. Harp is optional, though very much encouraged. The Vibraphone part, played by Percussion 1, is written in versions for both 4 mallets and 2 mallets. While the 4-mallet part is preferred, the 2-mallet part works just as well. Minimal bowings have been included in the string parts, only to aid in suggesting certain concepts of phrasing.
