Cagers Get Wins Going Into Christmas Breakby Whitt CarterContributing Writer

Sulphur’s boys and girls bas-ketball teams each got a victory going into the long Christmas break, but there will be little rest for the girls who will be defending their title in this weekend’s Bertha Frank Teague Classic in Ada this weekend.

Following is a synopsis of both teams in their wins over Lexington December 17.

Many key players from this year’s Sulphur football team re-turn to the team that made their first playoff trip in four years. The district 3A-4 coaches selected the All-District teams and individual award winners recently.

Sulphur finished the season 5-6 and third in the district in a return to the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

Senior quarterback Ryan Rackley was Co-Offensive Player of the Year after finishing the sea-son as one of the most impressive rushing performances in recent memory.

Rackley finished the year with 230 carries for 1,570 yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground. The senior also completed 65-of-133 passes for 790 yards and three touchdowns. Rackley also punted for a 40-yard average, kicked extra points and played

Sulphur outscored No. 14 Lex-ington 27-12 in the second half and issued another suffocating defensive performance to snag a big 47-34 win before Christmas break.

“We didn’t play very well in the first half. Their players and fans were ready and I don’t think we matched their intensity in the first half,” Sulphur boys head coach Chase Todd said. “We made some adjustments at halftime and played much better in the second half.”

The Dogs trailed 22-20 at half, but after recollecting in the locker

room, the Dogs were able to turn it on and do it in a hurry.

“We only allowed 12 points in the second half and only 34 in the game. Anytime you can do that, you’ve got a great chance to win,” Chase Todd said.

Ray Trent led the Bulldogs with 17 points on 7-of-14 shoot-ing. Michael Mares had eight points and five rebounds on 4-of-5 shooting. McLane Jolly added 10 points and four rebounds.

The Bulldogs, who had strug-gled shooting the ball in the firs three games- shot 43% from the floor.

“Jacob (Holland) and Ray (Trent) did a great job on their two

best players and the other guys played great help defense,” Chase Todd said. “Ray did a nice job on offense and Nick (Magruder) came in and gave us a great spark off the bench.”

Chase Todd and the Sulphur program has had plenty of classic battles with Lexington over the last few years. They knew this would be no different.

“Our kids are always excited to play Lexington,” Chase Todd said. “We’ve had a lot of close games over the last four years and it’s developed into somewhat of a rivalry. I told the kids I was proud of the way they handled the crowd and adversity after being down at

half. Hopefully, we can use that experience going forward.”

Chase Todd and his group are done until after the break, but the coach and his team felt they got off to the start they wanted.

“I’m pleased going into the break at 3-1 and have only lost to the No. 2 team in the state,” Chase Todd said. “We’ve got lots of room to improve and it’s impor-tant that we have good practices over the break and continue to get better both defensively and offensively.”

GirlsSULPHUR 49,

LEXINGTON 23The young Sulphur girls took

another step in the right direction last Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs used a dominating defensive perfor-mance to head into the Christmas holiday, as they coasted to a 49-23 victory at Lexington.

Freshman Kacie West scored 17 points and grabbed four re-bounds, and also had three steals and two assists to lead the Lady Bulldogs, who got out to a quick start by outscoring Lexington 12-4 in the first quarter.

Big rallies are nothing new to the Davis Wolves. A year ago, the team was fighting Millwood in the Class 2A playoffs, trailing by 23 points, and then rallied to win, 42-28.

Last Thursday, the two teams were battling for the state champion-ship and it appeared at halftime that Millwood was the far superior team, taking 19-point lead into the locker room.

But appearances can be deceiving.Davis used their quickness in quarterback Blake Summers, bruis-

ing power of fullback Braden Ruth and a lot of good old hard nosed football to win their fifth state title by rallying from 19 down to beat the Falcons, 36-32. It was one of the most memorable state title games ever.

“We’re down by more than two scores to a really good team at half, and all they wanna know is, ‘OK, what do we need to do?’ ” Davis coach Jody Weber told the Oklahoman’s Scott Wright. “And they believed. There weren’t a lot of reasons to believe at times, for a lot of that game,” Weber said.

It was Weber’s 150th career win and first state title. His father, Joe, won two previous titles and Mickey Hoy won two prior to that.

Although Davis scored on a Blake Summers’ 10-yard run in the first quarter to give the Wolves a slim, 7-6 lead, Millwood took ad-vantage of their great speed at skilled positions to score three more times before halftime for a 26-7 lead.

And, when Davis was pinned down at their own one yard line late in fourth and trailing, 32-21, there was not much hope for an old fashioned wishbone team.

But with Summers using his quickness and the strong running of Ruth, who scored on a 52-yard run to start the rally a few minutes before, the team marched down to the one where Summers dived in for the TD. When the Wolves’ Logan Conyers recovered the ensuing on-side kickoff, Davis was then poised to get the most improbable victory and they did, going 49 yards in five plays as Summers scored the game-winner from eight yards out.

“I’m just so proud of our kids,” Weber said.

The winning score in last week’s Senior Scramble was 11- under par 61 and was turned in by the team of Danny Alexander, Bob Slaughter and Lowell Malloy, all of Sulphur. In second place was the team of Roy Rogers, Davis, John Stephenson, Randy Archer and Willie Coon, Sulphur. Clos-est to the pin winners were Bob Walker on number 2 and Alexan-der on number 8.

For the winter months the Scramble schedule will be deter-mined by the weather. The golf shop will call the players and advise what day and time the Scramble will be held each week. Anyone over 50 is encouraged to come out and participate. For more information, call the Sulphur-Da-vis Elks Golf and Country Club at 622-5057.

happy to be 3-1 going into Christ-mas break,” said Sulphur girls head coach Toby Todd.

Sulphur lead 22-11 at half, and put the game away with a 17-5 third quarter.

“I thought Kacie (West) and Reilly (Williams) played really well,” Toby Todd said.

Williams scored 12 points and had five rebounds and Harlee Griffis added five steals.

Toby Todd commented on the team’s focused effort on the offensive end, and their intensity

on defense.“We were really conscious

of having good shot selection, especially in the second half, and it showed in our shooting percent-age,” Toby Todd said. “We shot 12-for-15 from the floor in the second half, which I was really impressed with. I also thought we played great team defense, which will only help us going forward.”

The girls will compete in the historic Bertha Teague Classic this weekend, arguably the top

girls prep tournament in the state.

The Lady Bulldogs are the de-fending champions, after defeat-ing Hammond in the first round, Tulsa Union in the semifinals and Georgetown (TX)- the 4A state champion- in the finals.

Sulphur will open this year’s tournament against 4A favorite Mount St. Mary’s. The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Rockets in last year’s Heat of Oklahoma tournament championship in Purcell.

defensive sparingly. He shared the award with Plainview quarterback Taber Jordan.

“He was an outstanding per-former for us for his entire career,” Sulphur head coach Jim Dixon said. “He was tough as nails and ran really well. He was a great leader for us and started for three years. He played all over the place and he had a great career as a Bulldog.”

Rackley finished his career with 490 carries for 3,100 yards and 38 touchdowns.

Wyatt Jones was awarded the outstanding tight end award. Jones sat out his junior season due to a knee injury, but returned this season and made a huge impact for the Dogs.

Jones caught a huge, fourth quarter touchdown pass against Pauls Valley in a crucial 19-14 win and recorded 77 tackles on defense, where Dixon thinks his impact was the most felt.

“I was really impressed with how well Wyatt played on de-fense,” Dixon said. “He was a good player for us on both sides of the ball and came back strong from his injury.”

Tanner Watson was the Co-Linebacker of the Year, as he returned from the same situation as Jones, sitting out his junior year with a knee injury.

Watson led the team with 122 tackles and had over 200 for his career. He also played heavily at running back and fullback.

“He was huge for us all year long,” Dixon said. “He played extremely well on both sides of the ball and he was a two-year starter. He also came back strong from his injury and was the heart and soul of our defense.”

Several other Bulldogs were awarded with all-district honors, including several key linemen.

Tye Brown, Caleb Duck and Charlie Heitland were all named to the first team offensive line.

Brown was a three-year starter; Duck was the starter this year at center and Heitland played on both sides of the ball for the Dogs all year long, recording 42 tackles on defense.

“All of those guys were really good blockers for us,” Dixon said. “Brown was a three-year starter and a hard worker. Caleb (Duck) had a solid year for us at center and Heitland played well on both

sides for us this year.”Keagan Davidson was also

named as an all-district defensive back, as he played a key role at safety and wide receiver for the Dogs this year. He finished with 35 tackles and an INT on defense.

Davidson had a huge intercep-tion and pass reception in a close loss at Marlow, in which he was awarded player of the game.

“He did a great job for us on both sides this year,” Dixon said. “He worked hard at wide out and defensive back and had some big plays for us this year.”

I was born in 1870 in Mis-souri. Father was Frank Griffin, born in Missouri. Mother was Eliza Haverlipe, also born in Missouri.

We were living on a small rocky farm in what was called the Griffin Community in Missouri in 1877. I remember a group of farmers living around there got together and formed a wagon train and pulled out for Texas and my father, mother and I went too. I was seven years old but large for my age. There were eighteen wagons in all and some of the names I remember were John-son, Wilson, Moran and Spenser. There were only four mule teams in this wagon train and the rest of the teams were oxen.

We crossed into the Indian Territory after leaving Fort Smith, Arkansas. We crossed the Choc-taw Nation traveling west and I remember when we camped at night the men driving the wagons would put the wagons in a large circle and turn the teams loose to graze and two men would herd the horses until midnight and then two other men would relieve the first two and watch until daylight.

We all ate together. The women folks would all do the cooking and we had deer meat every meal and that was only twice a day. For breakfast we would have fried deer meat. There were three big iron pots and that was what the women would fry the meat in and the bread we had to eat was cornbread and we only got corn-bread for supper. For breakfast we would have corn meal mush and fried deer meat.

I remember my uncle, Gus Baker, was called the best rifle shot in Missouri, so he and another man always rode ahead of the wagons

The Memories Of Zed Griffinsulphurtimes.comCOLUMNS6A Sulphur (Okla.) Times-Democrat, Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013

and marked the trail for the lead wagon to follow.

There was no road and after we crossed out of Arkansas into the Indian country I never saw a fence of any kind until we crossed Red River into Texas. One place I remember quite well, we were camped at the home of Chickasaw Indians about ten miles east of where Pauls Valley is now. This Indian’s name was James. I didn’t know it was that at that time but later after I had grown up I met an Indian man named Arthur James and in talking I found out it was his father who lived there when we camped that night and this Arthur James, then just a very small boy, still lives at this place.

My father killed a big elk early the next morning before we left there and while travelling on into Texas, my mother made me a ring out of a bone that came out of this elk’s hind leg and I still have that ring. There was no Pauls Valley then, only a store about a mile south of where Pauls Valley is now.

While crossing the Choctaw and Chickasaw Country, we would pass many Indians all painted up but they never bothered this wagon train, only I have heard Father say all the Indians would want was tobacco. I don’t know where they lived as there were

very few houses that we passed after crossing into the Indian Country and what few houses we did pass were one and two roomed log houses.

There was only one shooting scrape on this trip. One night we were camped on Rock Creek south of where Sulphur is now. We had traveled all day over rough hills and had only traveled about ten miles from where we had been camped the night before. An Indian had told Father to always be on the watch while we were crossing the mountains as there was a band of outlaws in that part of the country.

So that night at supper Father told the men what he had been told so they doubled the guard on the stock that night. My Uncle Gus Baker took three men and stood what he called the ‘grave-yard watch’ from midnight until daylight and along sometime in the early part of the morning the shooting began and it woke everybody up.

I remember my father getting his old muzzleloading rifle and all the men went in the direction the shooting was coming from then. My Uncle Gus Baker owned the only rifle that shot shells among the men on this trip and by the time the other men got out to where the stock was grazing the

shooting had stopped. My father told Mother when he

came back that six men got killed and only one of the stock guards got wounded in the shoulder but he died three days later and was buried where we camped.

There were no bridges on the Washita River and we forded it some place near where Dougherty is now and we also forded Red River. I remember five of the men on horses took their ropes and tied them to the wagon tongue and helped pull the wagons across Red River. It took nearly all day to cross Red River as they would take one wagon across at a time.

My father settled on a farm in Texas. After crossing Red River this wagon train split up and my father and uncle with their families settled on the same farm. We lived there until 1891. At this time my father and mother and I loaded up our wagon and came back into the Indian Territory and settled near old Johnsonville on a ranch owned by a man named Byars.

My father went to work for the Byars ranch and on the Byars I learned to rope and ride. We only lived there two years. My father got the ‘going fever’ again as my mother would call it and we went back to Texas and settled on the same farm with my uncle.

By this time one of the men who was with the wagon train when we first went to Texas named Johnson had become a large cattle owner and I went to work for him on his ranch. My father and mother never made any more moves. They died and were buried on the little farm where they had first settled in Texas.

QUESTION: When the city of Sulphur was first built, it was built in what is now the Historic Platt National Park . When the Chickasaws turned the land over to the Federal Government the houses had to be moved. The houses were either moved or burned down. The number of buildings was rather large. The years were 1902 and l904. Do you know how many houses and business buildings were affected.

LAST WEEK’S QUESTION: At one time, the area at 1015 West Broadway in Sulphur was used for basketball, football and a stopping place for carnivals. Do you know where this is?

A Time of Tradition December is a time of family traditions, holiday celebrations and

generosity. During the last month on our calendar, it’s easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle of Christmas parties, gift shopping and other commitments. But as we reach the height of the holiday season this week, I encourage you to stop for just a moment and reflect on all the great gifts we have received as individuals and as a nation.

This year, I’m reminded of a very different Christmas, just five months after the colonists broke away from Great Britain to form the United States of America. As we remember, signing the historical Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, immediately launched the 13 colonies into war with the British crown. Tested by the tri-als of war and defeat, it was on this Christmas that General George Washington led the Continental Army to a critical victory at Trenton, New Jersey that altered the course of the war. Leading hundreds of soldiers across the icy waters of the Delaware River to surprise the opposition, this win boosted American morale when it was needed most, reminding the colonists that independence was not an empty cause or out of reach.

Today, our hard-fought freedom is still treasured and our liberty still precious, inspiring thousands to volunteer their service and risk their lives to serve in our military. They know the true meaning of sacrifice, especially during the holidays when many are away from their families and loved ones. Join me in thinking of our troops overseas, praying for their safety and supporting their families here at home.

We are blessed to live in country where gifts abound and blessings are numerous. As we celebrate the greatest gift of all this year, I en-courage you to slow down and not miss the meaning of the season.

“Nature’s The Thing At Chickasaw National Recreation Area”

The other day I overheard someone telling about a young child who came home from kindergarten reciting the old, familiar nursery rhyme in a brand new way. It went something like this: “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. I know EXACTLY what you are. Oxygen, carbon, neon and ash, titanium, chromium, manganese and iron.”

No doubt about it, this was uttered by a very precious youngster. But, isn’t it a shame for one so young to have all the answers? Shouldn’t a child’s world be fresh and new and beautiful, FULL OF WONDER and excitement rather than cold hard facts?

Rachel Carson is probably best known for her book “Silent Spring” that was a history making bestseller that stunned the world with its revelations about new discoveries that have changed the shape of life on earth as we know it. However, she wrote other great books that weren’t as well known, one of which is titled “The Sense of Wonder.” In this book, Miss Carson tells of her experiences exploring and discovering the world of nature with her young nephew, Roger.

One of their “fun” walks in the woodlands of Maine, Miss Carson describes it like this: “It was here that we first played our Christmas tree game. There is a fine crop of young spruces coming along and one can find seedlings of almost any size down to the length of Rogers’s finger. I began to point out the baby trees. “This one must be a Christmas tree for the squirrels,” I would say. “It’s just the right height. On Christmas Eve, the red squirrels come and hang little shells and cones and silver threats of lichen on it for ornaments, and then the snow falls and covers it with shinning starts, and in the morning the squirrels have a beautiful Christmas tree. And this one is even tinier, it must be for little bugs of some kind and maybe this bigger one is for the rabbits or woodchucks.”

It is unfortunate that for most of us that type of clear-eyed vision, that true instinct for what is beautiful and awe-inspiring, is dimmed and even lost long before we reach adulthood.

And what, you might ask, is the value of preserving and strength-ening this sense of awe and wonder, this recognition for something beyond the boundaries of human existence? Is the exploration of the natural world just a pleasant way to pass the golden hours of child-hood or is there something deeper?

There is much more. For those persons such as scientist or laymen who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life as they find paths that lead to inner content-ment and to renewed excitement in living. Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.

There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of the birds, the ebb and flow of the tides, the folded bud ready for the spring. There is something healing in the repeated refrains of nature, the as-surance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the winter.

How long has it been since you’ve played the “Christmas tree game?” Try it. You’ll like it!

“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. How I WONDER what you are. Way above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky!!!”

Hilltop Animal Health

we wish youpeace, healthand happiness

for thecoming year.

Please seek advise from your tax professional

But you need to hurry, vehicles mustbe purchased and placed into servicebefore December 31, 2013, so shop now

while our selections are at their best.

As the 2013 year comes to a close, there are some important business tax advantagesthat we have had in the past that are changing.

WHAT’S THE URGENCY?For 2014, all indications are that the Section 179 deduction limitation will be

reduced to only $25,000 and any bonus depreciation deduction will be eliminated. The December 31, 2013, deadline is approaching quickly.

Right now, thanks to IRS Section 179 of the IRS tax code, many businesses thatinvest in new equipment will be able to write off up to 100% of these purchases on

their 2013 IRS tax returns, rather than spreading these deductions over several years. For instance, when you buy a qualifying new Ford truck for your business, the cost is

an expense that could be fully deducted in the first year it is placed into service.

Fay Smith with a presentation during a retirement reception on December 19.

Park Staff Bids Farewell To Worker Wille Fay Smith

On December 19, 2013, friends and colleagues gathered in the Travertine Nature Center to thank Willie Fay Smith for her service to the National Park Service. Starting in 2005, Willie Fay began working for the park as an employee of Experience Works. She was hired by the National Park Service in 2007 and continued to work on the park staff until July of 2013.

During much of her time with

the National Park Service, Willie Fay staffed the information desk in the Visitor Information Station formerly located in the Sulphur Chamber of Commerce building. She also played memorable roles in public performances hosted by the park in conjunction with the Oklahoma Centennial in 2007 and in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

According to park Superinten-

dent Bruce Noble, “Willie Fay was an extremely dependable employee who served as the park’s public face in the Visitor Information Station, played a key role in several special events, and pitched in to help in many dif-ferent ways. We will miss her tremendously.”

Willie Fay’s National Park Service family wish her all the best. She will continue to reside in Davis.

Giving Is A Great Gesture, But Give Wisely, AG Says

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attor-ney General Scott Pruitt Friday encouraged Oklahomans to give wisely over the holidays to avoid charity fraud.

“Oklahomans are known for being generous to their neighbors, but they need to be cautious of fraud this time of year and make sure their donations are going to help a reputable and worthy cause,” Pruitt said.

Attorney General Pruitt said before Oklahomans donate to a group, they should research and contact the organization person-ally to ensure their donation is going to a reputable cause. Taking extra steps can give peace of mind

as well as help donations land in the right hands.

The Attorney General’s Public Protection Unit provides the fol-lowing tips to avoid fraud:

• Do not give credit card numbers over the telephone or via e-mail;

• Write checks payable only to the charity;

• Never be pressured into giving;

• Find out if a charity is registered in Oklahoma by con-tacting the Secretary of State at (405) 521-4211 or visit www.sos.ok.gov;

• Be leery of “free gifts” or “prizes” in return for donations;

• Ask for information in writing;

• Be leery of charities with names similar to well known organizations;

• Beware of appeals that are long on emotion, but short on facts;

• Never be afraid to ask ques-tions or request information.

For more information on giv-ing wisely during the holidays, visit www.oag.ok.gov, www.aarp.org or www.bbb.org. To report suspected fraud or scams, con-tact the AG’s Public Protection Unit at (405) 521-2029 or (918) 581-2885, as well as local law enforcement.

PHOTOS BY MIKE WESTCVS employees pose with Santa at the Christmas party at the Sulphur Veterans Center last Wednesday. They are (from left), front row, left side of photo: Tony Williamson, Emily Hewins.Middle row: Ashley Field, Kristi Kunze, Stephanie Reeves, Adam Alonzo, Fran Hewins.Back row: Curtis Tappen.Right side of photo, next to ‘Santa’ is Janice Bayless, who coordinated the gifting event with help from CVS work-

ers, the center’s personnel, the Air Force at Tinker, and the Masons. Next to her is James Kirk and ‘Mrs. Claus’, (also anonymous).

Piling up gifts prior to giving them to veterans are Technical Sgt. James White (left), from Tinker AFB, and Jenny Norton, rehabilitation director at the Sulphur Veterans Center. Residents were treated to a Christmas Party at the center last Wednesday.

Janice Bayless. She works as photo lab supervisor in the Nor-man store. She had the wish list information.

“We started this in 2004,” Bayless explained. “We just did Norman (center) then.”

She said her aunt was assistant administrator at the Sulphur Cen-ter at one time, and that is how she knew about Sulphur years ago.

She explained the procedure for the gifting activity, saying, “We call the centers, and they go around and ask the residents what gift they want. Then, in our store (in Norman), we have what we call our Heroes Wish Tree with the names.”

Employees and customers, Bayless said, take a name and buy for them.

“We make sure that everything they (veterans) want, they get,” Bayless said.

At the beginning of the pro-gram, Bayless welcomed the veterans and guests, saying, “It’s

a pleasure to see all you heroes today. We really appreciate every-thing you’ve done for us to ensure our freedom.”

She acknowledged the pres-ence of members of the 422nd Squadron from Tinker AFB that were volunteers handing out gifts.

Bayless introduced her team from CVS, followed by the Ma-sons, including, from the Sulphur Lodge, Col. Ron E. Little and wife, Freda.

Bayless wished the veterans a Merry Christmas, and added, “We love you. I can’t say it enough. You have a wonderful Christmas, and just remember what Christmas is all about.”

Jenny Norton, from the Sul-phur center, then called out the names as volunteers took the packages to the veterans.

While the gifts were handed out, Santa and Mrs. Claus roamed about the room handing out candy.

ent scenes. Each scene involves the elf sitting on the shelf and four children from the “family” approach it and give the elf a name.

Then they tell it what they want for Christmas. Finally, they tell the elf whether they have been good.

Children who appeared in the play ranged in age from three all the way through high school age.

This year’s play had an unusual twist when the large audience was treated to an excellent ballet dance done to a Christmas carol. The ballerina was student Emily McMahan.

The noontime event was attended by students and their

families. This was the last day of school

before the Christmas holiday. Most of the students, who live on campus during the week, went home with their families after the festivities.

The event began with an open-ing statement signed by Superin-tendent KaAnn Varner.

Before the show, she had the audience families fill out a questionnaire that is part of the school’s accreditation review.

Every part in the play was performed using sign language. For the hearing in the audience, three “voices” did script read-ings: Mariana Dilbeck, Johnnie Dodson and Roy Woodall.

Music Director Naomi Wood-

all performed carols on an electric piano.

In addition to writing and di-recting this show, Ron Lawer is a manual sign language specialist at OSD.

In the program, Lawer told the families in the audience “It is a privilege to work with your children at OSD’s Elf on the Shelf production. Thank you for letting your children be part of this production.”

He ended by wishing everyone a “blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!”

The production ended with the actors singing and signing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas!”

PHOTO BY MIKE WESTUnlucky Elf, Coffee, played by Andy Guisti, fell victim to a naughty boy touching

him, and destroying his Christmas Magic. The mischievous boy is the one in the center clowning around, a serious “over-actor.”
