Triangle Area Ostomy Association
May 2014
President’s Message:
I am honored to have been selected as president of the TAOA. My focus will be to encourage present members to attend meetings monthly and to find ways to enhance our present membership to include anyone who demonstrates a need or desire to learn more about ostomies. If you have any questions or concerns at any time, please reach me at my e-mail address: [email protected]. I will respond as soon as possible and provide you with an e-mail address or phone number of one who will be able to assist you if I cannot. Please plan to attend our next meeting on Tuesday, May 6 and bring along your spouse. We will separate into four groups, (colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy, and spouses of ostomates), to discuss our particular situations with our own ostomies. I sincerely hope to see everyone there. Respectfully submitted, Sam DeAngelo, President

MINUTES OF THE APRIL 1, 2014
MEETING OF THE TRIANGLE AREA OSTOMY ASSOCIATION Sam Bundy, President, called the April meeting to order at 7:30 PM. He welcomed 26+ members and guests including one first
time attendee. Sam thanked everyone for coming to the January and February meetings in the winter weather and stated that the
March meeting was canceled because of the closing of Wake County schools due to inclement weather. He thanked Ruth Rhodes for
calling and Ed Withers for emailing as many members as possible about the cancellation. Sam reminded everyone of the TAOA’s
policy of canceling meetings when Wake County schools are closed due to inclement weather—even though some members may be
able to get to the meetings. He also reminded everyone to call Rex Hospital when in doubt as the Rex operators will be notified of
cancellations.
Sam also announced that former WOC nurse John Worsham who was at UNC Hospital has been in India for the past two years
with his wife setting up health clinics. John was in town for a few weeks and is going back to India for two more years. Sam will
staying in touch with him and will ask him to speak to our group when he returns.
Ruth Rhodes, treasurer, announced that she had received a thank you note from Robert Cornish’s daughter for our donation to
hospice in memory of her father. Joanna Burgess, WOC nurse at Wake Med, stated that member Cliff Doehring passed away on
January 25. She has been in touch with his daughter and Cliff over the past few months and had gotten to know Cliff well.
Stephanie announced that the speaker for our March meeting, Terri Kuczynski, family counselor at Rex Hospital, has agreed to
speak at our June meeting. We will have break-out sessions by ostomy type with area WOC nurses at our May meeting. She also
stated that we still need a newsletter editor as soon as possible and that anyone who was interested should contact her. She is willing
to assist anyone and would walk them through the program. If you are interested at all, please talk to Stephanie as soon as possible!
Stephanie then introduced Dr. Matthew Milowsky, Section Chief of GU Oncology at UNC, as our guest speaker. Dr. Milowsky
does research on urological cancers including prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular cancers. He focused mainly on bladder cancer
and said that all bladder cancers are not the same. 70% of bladder cancers are non-invasive and can be treated in different ways in-
cluding medication and resections, 25% of bladder cancers are muscle invasive and require surgery and 5% are not curable. Most
bladder cancers can be treated with a combination of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. After his very informative talk, Dr.
Milowsky answered questions from members.
Sam Bundy had announced in the last newsletter that he would be resigning as President effective at this meeting. He stated that
he had only agreed to be President for 2 years and had served for 2 years and 3 months. Sam said that Sam DeAngelo, Vice Presi-
dent, had agreed to accept the position of President. Bonnie Sessums moved that we elect Sam D. as President and Billy Adams sec-
onded the motion. Sam DeAngelo was elected unanimously.
Stephanie announced that the bladder cancer support group iss having a walk in historic Hillsborough the Saturday before our
next meeting and she will put the information in our next newsletter. Funds support bladder cancer research.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM. Next meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 4 with refreshments provided by Bruce Curtis.
Respectfully submitted,
Bonnie Sessums
