Trials Fusion: Review
http://www.gamebasin.com/news/trials-fusion-review
Trials HD was the first, followed by Trials Evolution, now it’s time for Trials Fusion. So has RedLynx
pulled off another high flying hit, or does it crash and burn?
Trials Fusion is the third installment of the popular Trials series. You take control of your rider, then
punish them as you throw them through a series of courses designed to test your will. There’s
plenty to see and do from local multiplayer to building your own tracks, or even exploring the
community driven tracks.
Fusion doesn’t really innovate on the Trials formula, but why change something if it works perfectly
fine in the first place. So is Trials Fusion really worth your time and money?, lets find out.
Audio:
The soundtrack is quite outstanding. There’s a mix of just about everything thrown in to make your
trials more entertaining. No one wants to hear that revving bike engine the whole time. All the
sound effects and put together well and complement each other. The audio has a high production
value, but the voice overs your hear from time‐to‐time do become quite irritating when you’re
trying to concentrate and have to use a checkpoint. The soundtrack is quite varied, so there may
be some tracks that you don’t like or find annoying, but they all fit the game world’s futuristic style.
Graphics/Visuals:
The games visual style has quite a different twist on the previous two titles. Everything is set in a
futuristic world, instead of various trial courses and dank warehouses. Everything is bright, vibrant
and fun. There’s also a incredible amount of detail tied to the world you’re playing in. The visual
may be the least of your worries while you’re trying to concentrate but the game’s world is full of
excitement as you try to speed your way through to the finish line. Even though the game has been
developed for the current gen platforms, it runs extremely well on the older hardware as well.
There are times where you will see the odd flaky texture while the game loads. There’s also the
odd pause here and there while the game loads in assets. A little irritating at times, but it’s nothing
to that can’t be ignored as it doesn’t affect the overall gameplay. As you should expect, the game
plays flawlessly. There’s no issues with frame rates, screen tearing or slow down. Which is perfect
for a game that can get quite intense at times.
Gameplay:
If you’ve played a Trials game before, you know what to expect. Lots of paint, frustration, torment
and accomplishment. The gameplay hasn’t really changed over the various releases, it’s still the
same old trials everyone loves, or hates. But there’s a few new additions to the title. This time
around you have access to tricks and various upgrades. As you can expect, the tracks are filled with
all sorts of jumps, challenges and frustrations. But there’s a good balance between easing you into
the game and becoming brutally difficult. So what starts out as a fun easy ride, soon turns into a
rage filled frustration, with huge payoff if you beat the levels that are tormenting you. Trials is one
of those games where you spend most of your time alone, but with Fusion there’s also a
competitive mode. Sadly this is just local, so it’s perfect if you want to challenge your friends once
in a while from the couch, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of a challenge. All the courses are
designed around who can do them fastest with no faults. But there’s little to no reward apart from
victory. If you happen to become the ultimate master at unlocking everything and beating all the
levels with a gold rating, you can move onto user‐created levels. Some of which will test your
patience and skills to the highest level. Once you’ve mastered the game, the only thing left to do
is either beat your friends scores, explore the rather expansive user credited levels. Or take it one
step further and create your own levels to test the community. The level editor isn’t the most
user‐friendly, and you will need to dig around on the RedLynx website to find out how to use it fully,
but it offers all sorts of powerful tools to build levels. I played with the level editor for a good hour
or two, and found that it’s not really that difficult to use, it just takes a lot of patience and careful
placement and testing to make sure your outcome is playable. Trials has always had a very simple
formula, which it’s stuck to from the start. You have to balance your way through a course which
requires a lot of patience, practice and not forgetting speed. You’re run goes up against a clock for
medals, and your faults also count against you. Your aim is to hit gold, but expect a lot of harsh
failures and rage to fill your soul. That’s unless you’re quite passive and take things in your stride.
Story:
Trials Fusion doesn’t really have a story, it’s more of a competitive game so there’s no need for a
story. There is a career mode, but it has no direct story.
Conclusion:
Trials Fusion is one game you really should try. It won’t appeal to everyone, but it’s a lot of fun with
an interesting challenge level thrown in. If you’re a Trials fan to begin with, this will already be in
your collection. But for new comers who want to try out the series for the first time, I recommend
checking it out. Trials is one of those games that you either love or hate, but it offers a little bit of
everything. Action, excitement, difficulty and triumph.
