Well with two trials last month,Wrabness and Chattisham, we

are that much closer to desperatelyrequiring a volunteer for club secre-tary. Admittedly the Wrabness trialwas under Kevin and the ACTC butit does make one wonder how youexpect the EFA to put on trials af-ter the summer. Just think of itthis way - all those non-volunteerspresently have their fingers firmlypressing down on the self destructbutton but it’ll only take one per-son, in this instance, to removetheir finger to stop the ‘doomsday’clock. It’s a very dangerous game ofchicken you are all playing.

Another great AGM of which thereare pictures of the prize giving fur-ther in the mag. (no offence intend-ed with regards to the captions) noteverybody was able to attend withother trophy winners not picturedbeing:- Mark Fletcher - Pre-unit,Hard Route, Percival Trophy.

Howard Plush - Twin-shock, HardRoute, Peter Eaves Trophy andprobably most important of all(along with the Lady’s ObserversShield) the Gentleman's ObserversShield went to Colin Rose for hisservices to the club over the year. They missed out on the chili whichseveral club members were seen‘glowing’ in appreciation!

Roger Finch has been busy withhis video camera and given me awealth of clips of riders tacklingsections and as soon as I get timeto put them on the EFA You Tubechannel I’ll post a notification onthe Facebook page (me thinkingmaybe I can get Roger to do thisand thereby miss out the ‘middleman’ - delegation?) Watch thisspace as they say.

That’s all folks,

Thirty odd years ago the E.F.A.was born at my dining room

table. Its ethos was to keep oldbikes and their riders continuing inthe sport they loved without havingto pay out for super-duper newbikes or having to retire becausethe sections were gradually beinglaid out to accommodate these newmachines and their younger riders. So the club grew and is now one ofthe best clubs in the EasternCentre and one which respects itsobservers, but unfortunately thereare the odd one or two that needreminding. So I will enlighten themand anyone else who is not surehow to treat the observers at asection in a trial.

1.You will respect the fact thathe or she is in charge of thatparticular section and that theclerk of the course has shown theobserver where each route goes.

2.You will not attempt to alterthe section in any way and by anymeans make the route easier. Thiscan only be done by the clerk of thecourse before any rider has beenthrough it. When sections are laidout they should be tried out and, ifneed be, altered then. The onlyexception being overnight heavyrain making the section completelydifferent on the day of the trial andshould be altered before the start.

3.If you break down or wish toretire during the trial you mustinform all the observers personallyor get a message passed on. This is

common courtesy. The observerhas been at that section well beforethe start of the trial and it is notfair when they are kept waitinglonger than they should for acompetitor who has packed up andgone home. The observer has nochoice, no matter how cold or wet, they must stay at the section untilthe last rider has gone through.

4.Do not ignore the observer. Acheery “Good morning” is a goodway to start and then ask themwhere you should go. The markingis generally self explanatory butthere are the odd times when gatescan be missed, so just check tomake sure. Don't discuss it withanother rider as if the observerwasn't there, that would make twoof you going the wrong way!

5.Do not stand in-front of theobserver if they are watchinganother rider doing a section or askquestions until that rider has gonethrough. That's just good manners.

6.Do not argue with anobserver or verbally bully them. Ifyou do not agree with your scoreobject through the proper channelsor shut up, you could end up witha score card thrust in your chestand loose an observer.

7.When you have finished thetrial, as you finish each section nomatter how tired you are or howmiffed about a couple of 5's, alwayssay “Thanks for observing”. Youwould be surprised at the effect it

ON BEING AN OBSERVER

has on someone who's cold, wetand dying to go home and couldensure we get their help again. These people give you their time. It's the most precious thing youcan give anyone, don't treat it withcontempt.

To all our observers on behalf ofthe E.F.A. thank you for all yourhelp we really do appreciate it.Remember you are in charge of thesection, don't let riders hangaround in it for too long, if theydon't ride it when you ask them toyou are quite within your rights togive them a 10.

Make sure they know whichroute and what way it goes, if theyignore you and decide where to goon their own it's their fault if theyget a five. If they are baulked bysomeone in the section not gettingout of the way quick enough theyare entitled to another try, so it's

best to make sure the section isclear of riders before the next riderenters it.

Do not close the section untilyou are sure the last rider has gonethrough. Be patient, if there havebeen queues at some sections orpeople have broken down it canlead to a bit of a wait but thatmuddy smile and a “Thanks forobserving” will make it seemworthwhile.

The E.F.A. goes from strengthto strength and we have grown oldtogether, riders and observers alike. Thanks to all the chaps who set outthe trials and to all the riders whotake part and who are veryrespectful of our observers. To allthe observers, “thank you” onceagain we couldn't do it without you.

A mother-in-law stopped by unexpectedly at her recentlymarried sons house. She knocks on the door and immedi-ately walks in. She is shocked to see her daughter-in-law

lying on the couch, totally naked.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

"I'm waiting for Jeff to come home from work," the daugh-ter-in-law answered.

"But you're naked!" the mother-in-law exclaimed.

"This is my love dress," the daughter-in-law explained.

"Love dress? But you're naked!"

"Jeff loves me to wear this dress! It makes him happy andit makes me happy."

The mother-in-law on the way home thought about thelove dress. When she got home she got undressed, show-ered, put on her best perfume and expectantly waited for

her husband, lying provocatively on the couch.

Finally her husband came home. He walked in and sawher naked on the couch.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

"This is my love dress," she replied.

"Needs ironing," he says" "What's for dinner?"

I have a little Satnav, It sits there in my car.

A Satnav is a driver's friend, it tells you where you are.

I have a little Satnav, I've had it all my life.

It's better than the normal ones, my Satnav is my wife.

It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive

"It's sixty miles an hour", it says, "You're doing sixty five”

It tells me when to stop and start, and when to use the brake

And tells me that it's never ever, safe to overtake.

It tells me when a light is red, and when it goes to green.

It seems to know instinctively, just when to intervene

It lists the vehicles just in front, and all those to the rear

And taking this into account, it specifies my gear.

I'm sure no other driver, has so helpful a device

For when we leave and lock the car, it still gives its advice.

It fills me up with counselling, each journey's pretty fraught

So why don't I exchange it, and get a quieter sort?

Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I'm properly fed.

It washes all my shirts and things, and keeps me warm in bed!

Despite all these advantages, and my tendency to scoff,

I only wish that now and then, I could turn the bugger off!

MY LITTLE SATNAV

When we were young and short of yearsWithout experience, or fears

We bought old bikes and rode them fastAnd never thought it wouldn't last

But the experiences we hadWere mostly good, a few were bad

We took our bikes, on the track to raceWith throttle wide, we gained some paceSometimes we lost, sometimes we won

But after all is said and doneThe great excitement that we got

Was from adrenalin, not smoking potIn those early years they said that menWould live for three score years and ten

But now with creaking joints, and bigger fearsMans life span has lengthened by a good few years

Now we are around the big eight 0There's none of us who are ready to go

We’re still all into the biking sceneAnd in our minds we are still eighteen

The difference is that now we’re oldWe are now not quite so bold

And now there's talk of old age driving bansOf which I must say we’re not great fans

The one thing that I do wish forIs to get my leg over much much more.

Written by a geriatric hooligan.
