AtalentedyoungmanfromOakes,NorthDakota with a creative mind and varied interests was the force that started KustomMachine,Inc.
In197820-year-oldBillPtacekwasencouraged to build a small 30 x 30 shop and open for business after completing
the Machine Tooling Course at North Dakota State College of Science.SincethenKustomMachinehasgrownfromthatsmallshoptoover30,000squarefeetandemploys23people.
When Ptacek started Kustom MachineInc.itbeganasa repair shop for local ag implements,tractors,trucks,andtrailers,andadditionallybecame the job shop for manufacturersitistoday.ButthosewereonlytwoofPtacek’sinterests,healsobecameworld-renowned for his tinfoil phonographreplications,wasagiftedmusician,avidsailor,hotairballoonenthusiast,andworldtraveler.
TragicallyPtaceklosthislifeinasailingaccidentin2004,onlyayearaftercompletingaverylargebusinessexpansion.SinceBillwasasingleman,itlefthisfamilymembers(twobrothers,asister and their spouses) with a lot of uncomfortable decisions to make.Theyspokewiththeemployees,bankers,vendors,andcustomers—allofwhomsaidtheywantedKustomMachinetocontinueon.Sothesiblingsandspousesdecidedtokeepitopen.

Sister-in-lawLorrainePtacekhadjoinedthestaffin1999,priortoBill’sdeath,astheofficemanager/CFO.BrotherJim Ptacek joined the staff in 2005 as the general manager leavingacareerwiththetelephonecompany.Sincethenthecompanyhascontinuedtogrowandexpand.
In 2014 Kustom Machine added a water jet machine to do precisioncutting.ThisallowedKustomMachinetotakeweeksoffproductiontimebecausetheydidn’thavetooutsourcethecutting.In2017theypurchasedalargenew
brakepress,whichonceagainincreasedtheircapabilities.These,alongwiththeirsevenCNCmachiningcentersandnineproductionweldingstallsenablethecompanytodopartsfortheircustomers,starttofinish.
Overthecourseofthelast40yearsKustomMachinebuilttoolingmachinesthemselves,likethearborpress,andfoundcreativesolutionsthatspawnedmoreefficiency,morecapabilities,decreasedproductiontime,increasedquality,oraddedvalue.“OneofBill’sphilosophieswas‘Ifyoucanbuildit,whybuyit?’”saidJim.“Westilllivethattoday.”
Kustom Machine is in the envious position of having long-termemployees,accordingtoLorraine.“Wehaveagoodgroupofpeople,”shesaid.“Theylikewhattheydoandaregoodatit.Overhalfofourstaffhavebeenhereover10years.”
SomeofKustomMachine’slong-termcustomersincludeglobal manufacturers of agricultural and construction equipment,andgovernmentcontractors,alongwithareafarmersandbusinesses.
AsKustomMachineponderswaystocommemoratethe40thanniversaryofbusiness,theyreflectedonwhathaschangedthemostinthose40years.“Goingfromthecarbonless work tickets to being computerized was a huge change,”saidLorraine.“Icouldn’timaginegoingback.”

“Ourqualitymanagementsystemwasanotherbigstepforward,”saidJim.“Weputalotofqualitymeasuresinplace in 2008 that still make a difference for us and our customerseveryday.”
Whatideasaretheyworkingonforthefuture?“Plenty,”accordingtoJim.“Wehaveroomtoexpandandmaybedoingmoresteelcutting,threading,tubebending,andmore.”

Be patient. Thisisnotjustwithothersbutwithoneself.Failuretodothisresultsinpressuresthatwilloftenleadustobeineffective.

Introduces Manufacturing Concepts to Grades 6-8
The Build It Better! Game is a mobile game application developed byDreamIt.DoIt.Minnesota.
The purpose of the game is to teachyouthaboutmanufacturing.Build It Better! offers a well-crafted gameexperiencethatiscreative,challenging,andfun,whileencouragingrepetitiveplay.
While the app is an ideal tool for educatorsworkingwithyoungaudiences(6thto8thgrade)itdoesn’trelyoneducators,asanystudentcandownloadtheappandplayitontheirowntime.
Theappisbuiltaroundastorylineinwhichplayersflyinto colorful planet Zorblax and help Zorblaxians make theproductstheyneed.ThroughexploringZorblax,students can see how building better products can make adifferenceinthealien’sdailylife.Studentsmusttakethematerialstheyhave,andthenmakeproductsthatcanmakethedailylivesofZorblaxiansbetter.(Soundfamiliar?)Onceastudenthasbuiltproducts,heorshecangoback,tryitagainand“Builditbetter.”Throughplayingthegame,studentsgetexperienceinthemanufacturingprocess,andanunderstandingoftheroletheycouldplayinamanufacturingjob.
